First Sunday of Advent (Jeremiah 33:14-16; 1 Thessalonians 3:12 — 4:2; Luke 21:25-28, 34-36)

Capuchin Franciscan Sacred Heart Sisters

Advent comes from

the Latin word

meaning “coming.”

Jesus is coming,

and Advent is in-

tended to be a sea-

son of preparation

for His arrival.

While we typically

regard Advent as a joyous season,

it is also intended to be a period of

self - preparation through prayer

and acts of charity. The purple col-

or associated with Advent is also

the color of penance. Traditionally,

people have fasted during the first

two weeks. The Third Sunday of

Advent is called Gaudete Sunday.

(The word “gaudete” means,

“rejoice.”) The color, rose, sym-

bolizes the joy that we will experi-

ence when Jesus comes again.

During this time the Hispanic com-

munity celebrates,

Las Posadas. The

word posa-

da means "inn" or

"shelter" in Span-

ish, and this tradi-

tion re-enacts Mary

and Joseph's search

for a place to stay

in Bethlehem. Posadas are held on

each of the nine nights leading up

to Christmas, from December 16

to 24th. The celebration begins

with a procession in which the par-

ticipants hold candles and sing

Christmas carols. Individuals who

play the parts of Mary and Joseph

lead the way, or occasionally carry

images representing them. The

procession will make its way to a

particular home (a different one

each night), where a special song

is sung.

Did you know? Who should re-

persons receives information lead-

ing to a “reasonable suspicion” that

he or she must make a report to the

appropriate child protection or law

enforcement agency. However, eve-

ry adult has a moral responsibility

to report suspected child abuse. For

ciembre 17, a las 7pm en la iglesia. Le invitamos a participar en esta ce-

lebración como preparación para el

nacimiento de Nuestro Señor Jesu-

cristo.

Adviento viene de la

palabra latina que

significa "venida". Jesús

viene, y Adviento está

destinado a ser una

temporada de preparación

para su llegada. A pesar

de que normalmente consideramos

Adviento como un tiempo de gozo,

sino que también tiene la intención

de ser un período de auto -

preparación a través de la oración y

actos de caridad. El color morado

asociado con el Adviento es también

el color de la penitencia.

Tradicionalmente, la gente ha

ayunado durante las dos primeras

semanas. El tercer domingo de

Adviento se llama Domingo

Gaudete. (La palabra "Gaudete"

significa, "se regocijan.") El color,

rosa, simboliza la alegría que

experimentaremos cuando Jesús

venga otra vez. Durante

este tiempo la comunidad

Hispana celebra, Las

Posadas. La palabra

posada significa "posada"

sostienen velas y cantar villancicos.

Las personas que desempeñan las

partes de María y José llevan el

camino, o en ocasiones llevan

imágenes que los representan. La

procesión hará su camino a una casa

en particular (uno diferente cada

noche), donde se canta una canción

especial.
