Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time (1 Kings 17:10-16; Hebrews 9:24-28; Mark 12:38-44 [41-44])

Capuchin Franciscan Sacred Heart Sisters

The Catholic Church offers us November,

which begins with All Saints Day and All

Souls Day, as the Month of the Holy Souls

in Purgatory—those who have died in grace,

yet who failed in this life to make satisfac-

tion for all of their sins.

In recent years, perhaps no Catholic doctrine

has been more misunderstood by Catholics

themselves than the doctrine of Purgatory.

Pope Benedict’s encyclical (Spe Salvi 44-

48) complements the Treatise on Purgatory

by St. Catherine of Genoa (1447 – 1510) in

which she describes the peace and joy of the

souls in purgatory and that the greatest pain

suffered by the holy souls is not a physical pain but the pain of separation

from God; the loving flames are seen in the light of divine love remem-

bering that God is all mercy with His arms always open to receive us into

His glory.

Purgatory is not a place in the true sense of the word but a condition of

existence. The Ecumenical Councils confirm also that those who, after

death, exist in a state of purification, are already in Christ’s love who re-

moves from them the remnant of imperfection.

Purgatory is not a static condition of existence it is also a process of puri-

fication that removes all sin and imperfection. Those who live in this

state of purification after death are not separated from God rather they are

immersed in Christ’s love. Neither are they separated from the saints in

heaven who already enjoy eternal life or from us here on earth who con-

tinue our pilgrim journey to the Father’s house. We all remain united in

the Mystical Body of Christ and that is why we can offer prayers and

good works on behalf of all those souls in purgatory. They cannot do any-

thing for themselves, but you can do something for them. Their time there

is shortened by our prayers and good works, and by the Mass.
