Ordinary Time in the Catholic Liturgical Year

While the word “ordinary” means customary, regular, and orderly.

Ordinary Time may also be called Ordinal Time, which means numbered

time. Hence, Ordinary Time is the standard, orderly time outside of the other

liturgical seasons. Ordinary time is the longest liturgical season in the Catho-

lic Church, encompassing either 33 or 34 weeks each year. The weeks are

numbered, e.g., the first Sunday of Ordinary Time, the second Sunday of Or-

dinary Time, etc. Ordinary time is technically one liturgical season, though it is divided into two periods.

The period of Ordinary Time used to be referred to as “Ordinary Time after the Baptism.” This period of Ordi-

nary Time lasts until the day before Ash Wednesday, which is Shrove Tuesday. This portion of Ordinary Time focuses

on the childhood of Jesus and then on the public ministry of Christ.

The second portion of Ordinary Time begins after Pentecost and is much longer than the first. This second pe-

riod of Ordinary Time lasts from the day after Pentecost through the final day before Advent. Because this portion of

Ordinary Time occurs after the celebrations of Jesus’s Passion, Resurrection, and Ascension, this segment of Ordinary

Time is focused on the Age of the Church - the time that exists between the Age of the Apostles and the second and last

coming of Christ for which we are preparing.

join the team developing a new pro-

gram to actively engage parish teens

in the life of the Church. Candidate

must be a practicing Catholic with

solid experience working with youth.

A degree in theology or religious

YM certification is desirable. Must

have excellent communication and

organizational skills (ideally, Spanish

fluency as well) and be willing to

work collaboratively. This position

could include Confirmation Coordi-

nator depending upon background.

Tiempo Ordinario en el Año Litúrgico Católico

Mientras que la palabra "ordinario" significa habitual, regular y ordenada.

Tiempo Ordinario también se puede llamar tiempo ordinal, lo que significa

tiempo numerado. Por lo tanto, tiempo ordinario es el estándar, el tiempo orde-

nado fuera de los otros tiempos litúrgicos. Tiempo ordinario es el tiempo litúr-

gico más largo de la Iglesia Católica, que abarca de 33 o 34 semanas al año.

El Tiempo Ordinario se divide en dos períodos. El período de tiempo ordinario

antes se denomina "tiempo ordinario después del bautismo." Este período de

tiempo ordinario dura hasta el día antes del Miércoles de Ceniza, que es el

martes de carnaval. Esta parte del tiempo ordinario se centra en la infancia de

Jesús y luego en el ministerio público de Cristo. La segunda porción del tiem-

po ordinario comienza después de Pentecostés y es mucho más largo que el
