Stanborough’s Shower Rangers -Winner of Best Campaign
Miss R. Hooper, Curriculum Leader: Science, writes:
On Wednesday 7th June, Stanborough students, under the team name Shower Rangers, went to the Fielder Centre in Hatfield to present the work they have been doing to
reduce water wastage for Affinity Water’s challenge.
The day started with plenty of food to energise the team. They were then taken to the
conference room where they received a presentation from Dr James O’Jenkins, Associate Dean, International School of Life and Medical Sciences, University of Hertfordshire, who highlighted the global issue of water scarcity.
After a short break it was the turn of the students to present their work to four expert judges and competitors from four other schools. The students showed real nerve by
standing in front of so many people and explaining all the hard work they had done in school to campaign to reduce water wastage and their design of a water saving shower
device.
The judges were rightly impressed
with the campaign which consisted of posters, form promotion, a YouTube
channel, website and promotion in the Stanborough Times. The
campaign proved highly effective in causing students to consider water
usage and lead to an average saving of 17 litres of water per student, per
day (over 100 litres a week). Such a feat won them the category of ‘Best Campaign’ where they were presented a certificate from retired Mayor of Welwyn and
Hatfield, Cllr Patricia Mabbott.
The day was not all work. The team were able to play some water saving games and even
managed to have a go using a virtual reality headset, all aiming at promoting water saving.
The team gained a lot from participating in the project:
‘I have learnt that water will be a problem sooner than people think.’ Ellis Hayes 7B
‘I enjoyed the games after lunch because they were really fun and I won Bingo (after many
attempts). Ania Christian 7S
‘I enjoyed playing Bingo with the retired mayor’. Holly Clayton
7S
‘I enjoyed sharing our presentation with other schools and the
judges. I was proud of the team when we won “Best Campaign’’. Emma Hudson 7S
‘I really liked playing Bingo with my friends and the retired
mayor. Our team worked really well and we then won Best Campaign. Yay! I loved the biscuits at break. They were yum’.
Isabella Litchfield Gomes 7S
‘I enjoyed looking at the virtual reality with the different
locations. It was funny watching others doing it’. Lauren Ellerd-Elliott 7S

Art Debate Miss A. Barnard, Subject Leader: Art, writes:
On Friday the 9th June, the Stanborough School art department took a
visit up to Lakeside School to support a student completing her Arts
Award. Selected students from Years 8, 9 and 10 took part in a
controversial debate surrounding the importance of creative subjects
within the curriculum. The students put forward some very important
issues surrounding the value or art and other creative subjects within
the curriculum and the importance it has on their future career
opportunities. It was an absolute pleasure to see such mature
opinions put forward and the students involved were a true credit in
representing the school.
We wish Lakeside all the best in achieving their Arts Award!
"The debate went really well because everyone listened to each
other and incorporated ideas together." Zoe Martin 10A
"It was a really good experience and it was interesting to hear various
points of view. It was good to collaborate with a different school to
share ideas." Olivia Spolnicka 9S
"I was so happy to take part in the debate and Lakeside were a really
friendly and welcoming school." Isobel Wilkins 8H
Stanborough’s own election result and student reactions!
Mr R. Hobson, History and Subject Leader: Politics, writes:
Last Thursday, as the country went to the polls to vote, so too did the staff and students of Stanborough School. With the Lib Dems
having won the Stanborough General Election of 2015, very much bucking the national trend of the time, there was great interest in
how the school would vote this time round. Having voted to remain in last year’s mock referendum – the Conservative vision of a
hard Brexit didn’t appear to be popular with the Stanborough electorate, as they chose to elect Labour candidate Anawar Miah by a
huge majority.
The Lib Dems and UKIP both saw their vote share substantially reduced while Welwyn & Hatfield MP Grant Shapps managed to
attract just over 17% of the vote for the Conservatives. There were steady gains for the Green Party while the spoiled ballots saw a
number of votes for Harambe, the tragically deceased gorilla. Since the drama of the Corbyn revolution within the Labour Party,
students in Stanborough have been giving their reactions to the recent political events.
“The general election really backfired on Theresa May. I was surprised that Labour won the school election. I thought more people
would vote Green because of the four day working week.” – Charlie Harker 8O
“I voted for Labour in the mock election because I believe that they are the only large party who can change the government in the
UK. Theresa May is ruining the lives of the working class and she is not someone who I trust.” – Zlaty Markov 10S
“I don’t think Labour should have won the mock election because they over promise and under deliver. They are giving out money
they don’t have and they will bankrupt the country. Conservatives are doing a good job in running the country and a hung parl iament
will not get us through Brexit.” – Lucy Thompson 10K
“I wasn’t surprised by the outcome of the election but I am concerned about the Conservatives being in talks with the DUP who
have a social agenda which is so controversial.” – Catherine Sparks, Year 12 Politics student.

Oaklands College Taster day
Mrs E. Ahmad, Student Career Pathways, Vocational Education and Enterprise
Leader, Business Teacher, writes:
On Wednesday 7th June, some Year 10 students attended an Oaklands college
taster day to enjoy subject specific lessons and gain a good experience of what
it’s like to study at college. At the end of the day we were invited to a
presentation which covered the range of courses available for students to study
as well as the apprenticeship opportunities available.
Kasey Larman 10K “I enjoyed the health and social care lesson, I learnt a lot
of useful things.”
Jacqueline John 10K “The health and social care lesson was very informative,
I think college is where I would like to study after Year 11.”
Nicole Chapman 10A “I enjoyed the performing arts lesson as it’s a career
path I’m thinking of following and I leant new things.”
Amy Chapman 10K “I enjoyed the performing arts lesson, it’s definitely something I am considering doing after
Year 11.”
School Council Conference Macy-Leigh Birleson, Head of School, writes:
On the 7th of June, Stanborough School hosted its annual School Council Conference, with the focus on 'Diversity'. It was a
time to speak about the important things students care about and to help keep Stanborough’s caring, helpful environment.
Communication between students (sixth formers all the way down to Year 7’s) allowed us to really understand how our school
commends diversity but also how we can improve it. Tables of eight or more, with a Senior Prefect as guidance, discussed
matters like relationships. We reflected on how we feel that our teachers are really there for each of us, that they have a
willing nature to listen and we discussed how we could develop those working relationships further. We talked about how we
could further break down the 'walls’ so that our teachers can best support when we need them most. We also spoke about
how incredible the opportunities are at Stanborough for both genders with GCSE options and the House system. For lessons
like PE, we suggested mixing the subjects so girls and boys get to try all sorts of sports. A idea for a huge event that came out
of the conference is a 'Diversity Proud Day' where students can show off what they are good at, or what their interests are
that make them different, and to celebrate this. Differences could include ethnic background, sexuality, having a skill, like
cooking or sport, or a hobby. Literally anything that you can feel proud about! Teachers got involved in the conference by
listening and understanding our views, it was one of the most productive conferences I have been to. A very controversial topic
that the students handled tremendously, in my opinion. It showed me just how many of us want to make a difference and most
importantly, I think that we actually will.

Theatre Club – Dreamgirls 25/04/17 and Aladdin 23/05/17
Miss R. Keeler, writes:
Throughout the last half term, there have been two theatre club trips to
‘Dreamgirls’ and ‘Aladdin’.
As with all our theatre club trips, the group travelled by train into London
and had some free time to explore Covent Garden and enjoy some
s h o p p i n g ,
grabbing dinner, with some enjoying a Ben’s
Cookie for dessert.
Featuring the classic songs ‘And I Am Telling
You I’m Not Going’, ‘I Am Changing’, ‘One
Night Only’ and ‘Listen’, the show follows
the journey of a young female singing group
from Chicago and transports you to a
revolutionary time in American music
history. The trio, ‘The Dreams’, must learn
the tough lesson that show business and
stardom isn’t always as glamorous as it
seems.
Hayden Cable (10A) ‘Dreamgirls was
amazing. The acting was great but the singing and the music stole the show. It was an amazing experience
and I would definitely go again!’
Daniel Rowe (10A) ‘An amazing mix of theatricality and musicality. Very catchy songs. An amazing
show.’
Theatre Club’s most recent trip was to see Aladdin at the Prince Edward Theatre. With breath-taking
sets, mind-blowing special effects (such as the flying carpet and cave of wonders), over 350 lavish
costumes and a fabulous cast and orchestra bring the magic of Disney’s Aladdin to life on the West End
stage. It features all the songs from the
classic Academy Award-winning film,
including ‘Friend like Me’, ‘A Whole New
World’ and ‘Arabian Nights’, as well as some
new additions, such as ‘Proud of your Boy’. It
was a great night out.
Ben King (9H) ‘Aladdin was incredible, the
actors were awesome and really funny. The
costumes were really unique and the plot
great. Overall, one of the best shows you
will ever see.’
We are now looking forward to our next
visits to ‘Matilda’ and ‘School of Rock’.

Sports Report - 6th June to 13th June 2017
Mr P. Harris, Curriculum Leader: PE, writes:
Athletics
Stanborough’s athletics squad took part in their 6th County league match on Wednesday in Stevenage. Both
squads were strong and they needed to be as they were up against Sandringham, Townsend, Princess Helena
College, Hockrill and St Edmunds.
In the boys’ squads, there were some fantastic performances on the track from Jack Dickinson (who won his
800 metres), Jack Woolmore (who came second in the 400 metres) and Jensen and Zack Read, who both picked
up second in the 300 metres and 1500 metres. In the field, Bailey Cripps won the javelin by a huge distance, with
a great throw over 30 metres, whilst Daniel Cooper gained a PB in the triple jump. Josh Wiseman produced a
magnificent throw in the shot putt to gain first place. The highlight of the evening however came in the last event
on the track as the under 16 boys, who fielded a complete Year 9 team against Year 10 students, won the event
by 0.5 seconds, a fantastic achievement!
In the girls’ squads, there were some great performances on the track. Holly Clayton came second in the 200
metres, Faith Beckles picked up second in the 100 metres and Lora Nathan came third in the 200 metres. In the
field, Georgie Ferguson produced a huge final throw in the javelin to snatch first place from Sandringham, she
went into the final throw in second place but managed to launch the javelin 26.28 meters and take first place.
There were also fine performances from Lora Johnson in the long jump and from Lucy Richardson in the under
14 javelin.
Rounders
The Year 9 girls team warmed up for the semi-final match in the district on Monday by taking part in the district
cup tournament. The girls won two out of their four games, easily beating Hertswood and Monks Walk,
however two narrow defeats to Owens and Chancellors, both by 0.5 of a rounder, meant they did not qualify to
the semi-finals. Georgie Ferguson was named girl of the tournament for Stanborough for her superb batting!
Well done!
County Representation
Jack Dickinson and Latrell Paul represented
Stanborough School on Saturday 10th June in the
county championships. Latrell came fifth in his 100
metre heat and unfortunately did not qualify for the
final. Jack had a fantastic afternoon picking up a
bronze medal in the 800 metres. A huge
congratulations to the boys for a fantastic effort!
Well done!
Final results:
Under 14 Boys: 2nd
Under 16 Boys: 2nd
Under 14 Girls: 4th
Under 16 Girls: 5th

Senior Prefect Team
Chloe Dinnage
Chloe started at Stanborough in September 2011
“I have recently taken on the role of Head of School. This means that I work alongside
teachers and students on projects around the school, from charity events to assemblies.
Throughout my time at Stanborough, I have been involved in leadership roles which have
prepared me to take on this role. So far, this role is definitely a step-up from anything that I’ve
done before but it’s the challenge that makes it so interesting!
Applying for this role was something I had been dreaming about for years, and getting it
seemed completely unrealistic for me. When I found out I had been successful, I called my
mum as soon as I could! I hope to help the students in the younger years (and even my own) to build on their leadership skills and
complete projects that they want to do. For me, it is really important to have someone who you can go to for help with
leadership ideas, and someone who will push and inspire you to do your best. This year I want to be that person for many of you!
I think I will most enjoy building good relationships with the teachers but also, most importantly, the students. Through these
relationships, I am looking forward to passing on the experiences and knowledge I have gained from the last 6 years, to then aid
others in achieving their potential. In my eyes, one of the most rewarding things is seeing the successes of others and so this will
definitely be the most enjoyable aspect for me.
Something that stands out for me is the strong element of teamwork that is engraved in our community. I have seen so many
successes come out of a group effort, like the Prom Committees or the Leadership Academies, for example. There is an ever-
growing sense of teamwork at Stanborough, covering many bases, like the current Year 7 “Shower Rangers” and their pledge to
save water!
I cannot resist sitting down and binge watching a TV show (whatever I am obsessed with at the time – right now it is
Supernatural) with a tub of ice cream and my cat to cuddle. Aside from that, I love going out with my friends, no matter what we
are doing - it is always full of laughter and they always manage to cheer me up. I love studying Spanish and have a huge interest in
psychology. In the future, I hope to be working with children or using my interest in Spanish in my daily life – wherever life may
take me! My main hope is to just be content in what I do, as I am at the moment!”
