Why Educating Girls Matter
Educating girls empowers them to make decisions about
their bodies and their lives
Healthy FamiliesEducated mothers are more likely to provide their children with the health care and nutrition that they need.
LifeEducated women have less risk of dying in childbirth and their children have a better chance of surviving past age 5.
ProsperityEducated women get better work opportunities and pay, making economies more fair and prosperous.
The FutureEducated mothers more often decide to send their children to school, continuing a beneficial cycle.
We are a sisterhood of young female professionals, entrepreneurs and leaders who mentor and guide teen girls in the communities to be successful in their pursuit of higher
education and life in general.

CURRENT AND PREVIOUS SPONSORS AND PARTNERS
My name is Thoko Mahlangu, a 20-year-old young woman from Tembisa, Gauteng but currently residing in Stellenbosch. I was part of the DreamGirls International Outreach and Mentoring Program in 2014 while I was doing my grade 11 at Tembisa High School. I came across the Program when one of the members came to recruit learners from my school. I applied to the program to explore career options that match my interests and gain more knowledge about post-school opportunities and ways to access them.Being part of the program was the most gratifying experience I have had in my life. The program and its monthly life-skills workshops helped me decide what I wanted to do after school and find out what was required in order to access these opportunities. Most importantly it helped me develop confidence, self-esteem and self-knowledge.My mentor, Candice Sehoma served as a huge source of inspiration during my time in the program. Her kindness, willingness to share her own experiences and wisdom while listening closely, are all qualities that I took from the program. Beyond that, as a mentor she has always tried to help me become a better version of myself. Her constant support has been invaluable to this day.DreamGrirls continued to walk with me in my journey of life even after I graduated from the program. Today I can say that the program truly invested in my future and helped me rise to my fullest potential through education. In 2014, when I was doing my grade 12, the program helped me with my application to Stellenbosch University to pursue a BA International studies. Moreover, they ensured that I received full funding to study at the university. Today, I am a graduate of Stellenbosch University holding a degree in BA International Studies. I am currently pursing my BA (Hons) Political Science.DreamGirls also continued to be a source of support throughout the three years of my university career. One of the programs mentors from Cape Town, Jeanneke Malan journeyed with me and offered all the support and mentorship I needed during my undergraduate years. In June last year, she helped me find a journalism shadowing job as I needed to make a decision regarding my career choice after I obtain my degree. I have received the most valuable support from the program.Being part of the program has taught me to see opportunity where problems exist. Growing up in the township of Tembisa, I have seen first-hand the problems that young women from disadvantaged communities face. The program thus made me realise that my responsibility as a young citizen in South Africa is far greater than just to guarantee my personal success, but to achieve personal success that can act as an empowering example to other young girls from disadvantaged communities. It is for this reasons that I see being part of the program’s mentoring team as a continuation of that journey. I am honoured to be given the opportunity to give back and share my experiences with the next class of DreamGirls.
