MISS MOBBS’ MESSAGES

It has been lovely being back at school for Term 4. The students did a fantastic job at our Chalk Fest last week. The library is buzzing with new books in preparation of Week 3’s Book Fair and we had our first assembly award winners for Term 4 yesterday, with awards being handed out in class. Staffing ChangesMrs Sarah Bussenschutt who is one of our COVID tutors has come onboard as the Relieving Assistant Principal and will take on the role of Learning Support Coordinator. Learning SupportAt Forest Hill Public School we hold Learning Support Meeting each fortnight. In these meetings the Learning Support Team discuss students who have had referrals received from teachers and their parents who may need additional support in their learning other than what they are receiving from their class teacher. Additional supports may consist of SLSO time in class or the playground, tutoring with a COVID Intensive Learning Support program (COVID ILSP) tutor, time with Xena our school therapy dog, time with the Learning Support Teacher or a School Counsellor referral. In Term 3 we identified that as a school we could be improving our processes around Learning Support and began a Learning Support Review. Due to lockdown this process was interrupted. However, we are back on track and would like to hear from you. There is a parent survey attached to this QR code or you can use this link https://forms.gle/BD2ktzsQCtaUscGP6 to give your feedback. We would appreciate all feedback before Friday 22nd October.

Travelling safely to and from schoolStudents were reminded today of travelling safely to and from school. Could I please ask for all parents and carers to speak to your child/ren about safely travelling to and from school. We often have parents tell us of near misses at and around the shop carpark particularly with students on bikes and scooters not using the footpaths. Assembly AwardsIf students have received four assembly awards this year, they earn an Honour Award. Students will need to bring their four awards to the office and will get them back once they are presented with their Honour Award. P&C MeetingOur next P&C meeting will be Monday 18th October (Week 3) at 6:30pm. The P&C is a great place to learn about our school and we would love to see you there. Feedback and ComplaintsAttached is a document to help guide you when we don’t get something right. As always, we are here to speak to and appreciate you talking with us so that we can make any necessary adjustments. Miss Mobbs’s MentionsThere are so many people who help make Forest Hill Public School a great place to be. This week I would like to mention:• Cooper H who always brings his personal best smile and cheerful personality when visiting the office. • Marguerite C,Elaine L and Pauline B who have been very respectful in their patience in helping me learn new things in my transition to Relieving Principal.

Making a complaint about our schoolsWe are committed to resolving complaints promptly, so it’s best if you let us know about your concerns as early as possible.

For some matters it may be appropriate to talk to the school principal. If you aren’t sure who to complain to, your child’s teacher or school office staff can provide you with the correct contact details.

Talking about problems can be the best way to start resolving them.

Start by contacting your child’s teacher, by talking to school office staff, or in high school try the year advisor. You can raise your complaint in person, by email, over the telephone or by letter if you prefer. Make a time to meet with the teacher or phone the school and ask for an appointment.

Sometimes, we may ask you to put the complaint in writing. Include details and tell us what you would like to happen as a result of the complaint.

We can help you to put your complaint in writing. You can also use the complaint form or the Feedback Assist widget - both are on the Department of Education website. Make a time to meet with the teacher or phone the school and ask for an appointment.

When responding to a complaint, we may do one or more of the following:

■ take action to fix the matter or improve the situation

■ apologise

■ provide an explanation

■ acknowledge that the situation could have been handled better or differently

■ undertake to review policies as a result of your complaint.

Sometimes, we may not be able to change what has happened or the complaint manager will decide that the original decision was appropriate in the circumstances. Whatever the outcome, the complaint manager will give you clear reasons for their decision. This may be in a meeting or by telephone or by email.

In many cases, staff can manage a complaint made directly to them. Some complaints will need the involvement of the principal or workplace manager.

The person managing the complaint will gather the information they need to properly assess the concerns and make a decision about the best way forward. The complaint manager may make inquiries before contacting you.

If you are not satisfied with the outcome, you can ask to speak to the complaint manager to talk about the issues and raise your concerns.

If you are still not satisfied or believe that the complaint outcome was incorrect and/or the complaint handling process was unfair, you can request a review. The request should be addressed to the initial complaint manager or their supervisor.

Reviews should be completed by a person who has not been the subject of the complaint in any way and has not been involved in managing the complaint.

External reviews of complaints may be conducted by organisations such as the NSW Ombudsman.

Eight tips to help raise resilient kidsThe three important areas of resilience • Skills to cope Having skills to solve problems, manage emotions as well as the ability

to think through situations and decide on the best action.• Support Having support from at least one caring adult, friends or another good role

model.• Self-esteem Feeling good about yourself and your ability to take on challenges and

try new things

Eight tips to raise resilient kids1. Avoid dismissing your child’s challenges. Be open and talk with them at a young age about issues you faced when you were growing up and how you overcame them, i.e. sibling rivalry, sharing, handling change.

2. Talk about strategies they could use in different situations that may be difficult or challenging, i.e. an argument with a friend, or coping with nerves of an upcoming sports carnival.

3. Support them to develop a positive sense of self.

4. Don’t accomodate every need to make them comfortable. When we provide certainty and comfort in every situation, we get in the way of our children developing their own problem solving skills.

5. Let your kids make mistakes. Letting them make mistakes can be tough as a parent, but it helps kids to learn how to fix their slip ups and make better decisions next time.

6. Help your child to learn to identify and begin to manage their emotions. Teach them that all emotions are ok. If they’re angry, let them be angry, but help them to move for-ward from their anger and what the next steps are.

7. Support their growing need for independence. If they’re younger, start with the basics like teaching them to care for their own belongings, having them make their bed or do small chores e.g. feeding the pets.

8. Model resiliency. Children learn by watching you, try to be calm and consistent where possible. If you make a mistake, admit to it and explain how you will do better next time.
