Jeanine Davis is an Associate Professor and Extension Specialist in the Department of Horticultural Science with NC State University. She is located at a research and extension center in western NC near Asheville. For over 25 years, her program has focused on helping farmers improve the profitability of their farms by growing new crops, transitioning to organic agriculture, and adopting more sustainable practices. Her current efforts are focused on woodland botanicals, hops, truffles, broccoli, organic tomatoes and cucurbits, and biodynamic peppers. She is also the lead author of the recently revised book “Growing and Marketing Ginseng, Goldenseal and Other Woodland Medicinals”. Jeanine and her family operate Our Tiny Farm where they raise garlic, heirloom popcorn, honey, pastured beef, horses, and mini- donkeys. Margaret Bloomquist is a Research Assistant with Dr. Jeanine Davis’ Alternative Crops and Organics Program of NC State – since 2013 she has been primarily working with medicinal herbs, woodland botanicals, organic vegetables, the Eastern broccoli project, Industrial hemp, and other specialty crop research and extension efforts. When outside the fields and forests of Western North Carolina, Margaret serves on boards with the NC Natural Products Association, the NC Ginseng Association, and other community groups. Margaret’s background with sustainable agriculture and rural community development have led her around the world learning about participatory community agricultural models in Canada, Europe, Latin America, and East Africa. She is constantly continuing education and wisdom through her research and personal interests, including topics in soil ecology, plant medicine, biodynamic agriculture, homeopathy, communication, education and more. Holly Chittum is an Extension Project Associate at Virginia Tech and Project Co-Director for the Appalachian Beginning Forest Farmer Coalition. She also serves as a faculty member in the Herbal Medicine department at Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH), where she has taught courses in field botany, ethnobotany, phytochemistry and pharmacology, and herbal products industry topics. Holly is a Ph.D. student at Virginia Tech. Her research focuses on understanding supply chain dynamics and consumer demand for forest medicinal plants and products. In her free time, Holly enjoys travelling all over the world and spending time in nature, learning new things about the natural world, gardening, medicine making, and adventuring. Jeannie Dunn is the owner of Red Moon Herbs. Started in 1994 by Corinna Wood and Jessica Godino, Red Moon Herbs has seen many changes over the past 20 years, including a fourfold in growth, two apothecaries, compliance with FDA regulation. Throughout these changes, the focus and mission of the business has remained strong and true: to create herbal products from local, abundant plants. As an herbalist and NC native, Jeannie has been wildcrafting and making herbal extracts, oils and salves for about a decade. She studied at the NC School of Natural Healing and One World Healing Arts, but her herbal roots go much further back, to the back-to-basics lifestyle infused in her as a child. She picked strawberries, canned vegetables and pulled weeds from row crops with her parents and three siblings on their multi-generational family farm in Efland, NC. Today, knowing the powerful healing properties of those “weeds”, Jeannie happily uses them in her fermentations, herbal extracts and fun elixirs. Jeannie oversees both the art and the science of this earth-based, Wise Woman herbal business and apothecary.
