We have sad news. Alan Friend died on March 28, 2018. A member for almost five decades, Alan was a positive force in our folk music club. He was generous with his time and talent—teaching, performing and serving on the Board in several capacities including president. He was a devoted husband and father to his wife Rosalie and daughter Julia. Many of us attended club events that Alan and Rosalie graciously hosted in their home. We remember him with affection. The club extends condolences to Rosalie, Julia and the rest of the Friend family. If you would like to send a donation in Alan’s memory, organizations suggested by the family are: English Springer Spaniel Rescue of Long Island,www.springerspaniel.org, and JDRFType 1 Diabetes Research Funding and Advocacy, www.jdrf.org.
Judy Polish's mother, Ada Turkeltaub, died on March 22, 2018. She was 101. Born in London, England, she came to the U.S. at the age of 3. Music was the family's main source of entertainment; Ada, her sisters and brother sang and harmonizedpopular songs, Yiddish songs and English songs. At her funeral the audience joined in for a rousing round of “You Are My Sunshine.” She bequeathed the love of singing, of Coney Island, and games to Judy and to her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and a new great great grandchild named Sloane. The club extends condolences to Judy and her family.

Some Internet StuffThe late Alan Lomax left a huge archive of music. His Association for Cultural Equity is now headed by his daughter, the anthropologist Anna Lomax Wood. (Dr. Wood and her father both have participated in programs for the Folk Music Society of NY.) Finally Lomax's archive has been digitized and made available at http://theglobaljukebox.org.
Twentyfive thousand songs recorded onto 78RPM discs in the early 20th century have been released online, for free at https://archive.org/details/georgeblood, They are the first batch of an estimated 400,000piece virtual record collection to be made available by the Internet Archive, from gospel by the Tuskegee Institute Sings, to opera recorded in Italy, to novelty tunes by Spike Jones, to hot jazz.
The Séamus Connolly Collection of Irish Music is a new huge and impressive collection (with audio) of Irish music:. http://connollymusiccollection.bc.edu

When Was Our Society Born?by Steve Suffet
I recently looked into the official files of the Folk Music Society of New York, previously and alternatively known as the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club, and the earliest newsletter I could find is the December 1965 issue. It reports on an Executive Board meeting that took place on November 17 of that year, at which officers were elected protem. Annual dues were set at $3 per person.
I also found a first anniversary issue. There is no date, but by matching the days of the week and dates for events listed, I was able to determine it was published in either in late August or early September 1966. I would presume September is more likely, because in August many members would have been at Pinewoods Camp in Massachusetts for Folk Music Week. So it appears that the Pinewoods Folkmusic [sic] Club of the Country Dance Society of America, as it was first called, was founded one year earlier, some time in the fall of 1965, but the exact date is not known. Early newsletters came out at irregular intervals, possibly whenever the editor Bernie Klay decided to publish one.
That being said, I also found two issues of a newsletter called Pinewoods Palaver, likewise edited by Bernie Klay, and dated September 1964 and November 1964, respectively. These were obviously circulated among people from the New York metro area who had been to Folk Music Week at Pinewoods Camp. In the second issue there is a notice for a Song Swap Session at the C.D.S. Center in Greenwich Village on December 12, 1964. As part of the description the newsletter says: "If this session proves successful and is well attended and enjoyable, it could become a regular activity of C.D.S and form the basis of a Metropolitan Area Folk Music Club affiliated with C.D.S."
So it looks like what we now call the Folk Music Society of New York has two founding dates:•Pinewoods Folkmusic Club officially came into existence in the fall of 1965, with the first Executive Board meeting taking place on November 17, 1965.•However, it grew out of a song swap session that took place on December 12, 1964.So take your pick. Either way, we have been around for more than half a century and we are still going strong.

Scott Ainslie has been a musician all hislife. He came of age during the Civil Rights era, and cultivated a powerful affinity for cross-cultural exchange. He has studied with elder musicians on both sides of the color line — in the Old-Time Southern Ap-palachian fiddle and banjo traditions, as well as Black Gospel and Blues. He plays this music with affection, authority, and power. Armed with a variety of instruments — vin-
tage guitars, a fretless gourd banjo, a one-string, homemade diddley bow (aka cigar box guitar) and carefully chosen historical personal anecdotes of his en-counters with senior musicians across the South — Ainslie brings the history, roots music, and sounds of America to life.

Liza DiSavino and A.J. Bodnar offer musical excellence, beauty, and communal experiences through a dazzling variety of acoustic music. They have shared their unbounded love of music with audiences for 21 years, originally in the Catskill Mountains and now in the Appalachians of Kentucky. Their engaging repertoire combines timeless traditional, virtuosic instru-mental and original music to the ac-companiment of over 20 (often unusu-al) instruments. Their large repertoire of Americana music includes songs from the Catskills and Southern Appa-lachian ballads and songs gleaned dur-ing their seven years at Berea College.

About the Spring Weekend From dinner on Friday night to lunch on Monday, expect a weekend full of music, camaraderie, and relaxation. After dinner on Fri-day we meet the staff and hear a brief show-and-tell about their workshops. Then we'll play Themes from a Hat, followed by late-night jamming and singing (with snacks and coffee). There’s a Silent Auction to benefit our scholarship fund; please bring those unwanted treasures from home to donate.
Saturday and Sunday offer a variety of workshops, a dance (or two), a Camper Concert where the applause can be for you, and an evening concert plus late-night jamming and singing. Monday, more workshops ‘til lunch, then it is all over until next time. The hotel and the area offer plenty of options for hiking, swim-ming (heated indoor pool or outdoor pool, weather permitting), a spa (extra charges), or just lying about and relaxing.
