Easter egg nest cupcakes

Ilove to make these delicious treats atEaster time. I’ve used a vanilla cupcakerecipe here but you can switch tochocolate for an even greater ‘hit’.

• Preheat the oven to 165°C and line amuffin tin with large cupcake liners.

• Beat the butter and sugar until well combined. Add theeggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.

• In a separate bowl, sift flour and baking powder. Stirthe milk and vanilla together. Add the flour and the milkalternately to the butter mixture, starting and endingwith the flour and beating well after each addition.Spoon the batter into the cupcake cups so they are twothirds full and bake for about 18-20 minutes, until theyare golden and springy to the touch.

• Cool the cupcakes in the tins for 10 mins then turn on toa rack to cool fully.

For the chocolate frosting:• Melt the chocolate in a microwave bowl at 30 second

intervals, mixing inbetween until no pieces remain.Leave to cool slightly.

Vanilla cupcake (makes 12)

4oz unsalted butter, room

temperature

200g caster sugar

2 large eggs,room temperature

165g self-raisingflour

½ tsp baking powder

125ml semi-skimmed milk

1tsp vanilla extractChocolate frosting6oz butter, at roomtemperature1tbsp milk

1tsp vanilla extract125g chocolate chips150g icing sugarTo decorate:3 Flake bars36 Mini Eggs

• Beat the butter in a stand mixer(or with hand mixer) until soft.

• Add the sugar, milk and vanillaand stir gently to incorporate (Iuse the mixer paddle for this).

• Pour the chocolate into thebuttercream and mix on slowfor a few seconds.

• Mix on medium high speed fora good 6-7 mins until frostingis light and fluffy.

“Last year we decided it was timefor our boys to learn how to swim.We were looking for children’sswimming courses for some timebut they all seemed very expensive and not suitablefor one reason or another, such as the day or timethey were on. I came across the Adult Learning serviceand the Swimming Parent and Baby course, which wethought could be a great start to introduce swimmingto our 1 and almost 4 year old, especially as theclasses took place on Sunday mornings, which couldeasily fit in with our schedule.

We booked the courses online – the first class forour little boy and straight after, the next class forour oldest. It was a team effort for us; Dad was theone swimming with them, and I was responsible forkeeping them entertained while the other one was in

the swimming pool and dryingthem off after swimming.

They both absolutely lovedit and gained confidence inthe water whilst learning theswimming techniques. At theend of the course they werehappy to continue lessons so

we booked for them to attend the more advancedclasses which they both enjoyed very much.

Overall the classes have helped hugely with theirwater confidence and they can swim and play in thewater confidently. This confidence has also helped tomake the dreaded bath times much more fun.

It was a great family activity which we happilycelebrated with ice cream afterwards!”

What is 3D printingand how does it work?

3D printing is known as ”AdditiveManufacture“ it is a form ofrapid prototyping wheremodels are made layer

by layer not using a mould.

The basics:

All 3D printers need to print froma CAD file (Computer Aided Design)normally in STL format, this is a digital drawingof the product, the product can be scanned but thismethod is slightly limited.

Once the printer has the file it slices the digital modelinto thousands of wafer thin slices the material is laid

down in the exact cross sectionof these slices, one on topof the other, the printer alsouses a support material tosupport any overhanging

parts of the model once the model is finished thesupport material is then washed off in a specialwash tank.

There are many different types of 3D printers onthe market all with their own advantages and

drawbacks however the additive process of 3Dprinting offers many advantages over traditionalengineering subtractive processes, also havingshorter lead times and lower material costs.

3D printing is the best way to evaluate differentdesign concepts, modelling in this way will mean

that changes to the model are easy to carry out andinexpensive to do, shortening the development cycle.

The key attributes of modelling in this way areprint speed, part cost and life-like print output. it isa true production grade thermoplastic that isdurable enough to perform virtually the same asproduction parts.
