After last year’s mild temps, we almost forgot how heavy snow can be and how to drive with much longer stopping distances! Our Society will be led by an “Executive Council” made up of Lorraine Held, Dorothy Macintyre, Donna Parker and Bob Wilt. All of this team has considerable experience with Society duties, challenges, and relationships with our District 6 and Provincial leadership. (See page 2 for details of our AGM). The Council has already met once to discuss what challenges and fun we’ll have in 2017. It was a productive meeting, hosted by Dorothy as she is still recovering from a recent surgery. What a trooper! One of the subjects discussed was the possiblity of beginning a series of annual bursaries to deserving students in horticultural programs. We may need a separate committee just to assess where our funds could most help. Another discussion was about the significant donation from Mike & Terri-Sue Clare, owners of peonygardens.com in Alberton. Our future plant sales will be aided considerably by their donation of nursery equipment and stock. The last big subject discussed was the implementation of the generous donation from the Shaver-Cranston Family Foundation in memory of Jack Cranston (See In Memorium p. 3). It was very kind of the family and a great way to keep alive our memories of Jack. The upcoming year promises to be fun and filled with a robust plant sale, lots of public gardens crying for our loving care, a bevy of enlightening speakers, Trillium Awards and a new and improved Flower and Photo Show in July. There will be lots of events for members to enjoy and to participate in. So come on out and “get your hands dirty” or design something daring! Our regular monthly meetings resume on January 17th with speaker Kevin Kavanagh of South Coast Gardens and Consulting with “What Our Plants are Telling Us”, Extreme Weather Patterns over the Last 3 Years. Ouch, so that’s what winter is like!

The 2017 Executive and Board of Directors were installed by OHA Dist. 6 Asst. Director, Barb Bell. (Note: Several Board members not present)

Our Potluck dinner and AGM was held on an unseasonably mild Tues. Nov. 15th with approximately 37 in attendance. After a toast to the Queen & Canada, led by Colin Morris, and Grace, led by Bob Wade, President Bob Wilt led the group in observing a moment of silence for those members whom we lost in 2016. These members were Nelson Kolenski, John Lee & Jack Cranston. Bob Wilt thanked outgoing AGM Director, Greg Kraatz and Social Directors, Rosemary Anstey & Wendy Spangenberger, for co-ordinating the evening’s occasion. Solo artist, Cameron Caton, entertained the guests during dinner with humour and a variety of songs. Bob Wilt called the AGM to order. The financial and directors’ reports were given. The nominations were presented for an ‘Executive Council’ (consisting of Bob Wilt, Donna Parker, Lorraine Held & Dorothy Macintyre), in the absense of a Presidential nominee, and for the Board of Directors (see below). The Board was installed by Dist. 6 Asst. Dist. Director, Barb Bell, a member of Lynden Hort. Society. Bob Wilt, chair of the Awards Committee, presented the awards to this year’s winners. (See p. 4). In closing, Bob thanked members who have put in so many volunteer hours over the year.

In Memorium: Jack Cranston

by Bob Wilt

On November 2nd, 2016 we lost one of our long-term members, Jack Cranston. You may have heard his raspy laugh from the audience during one of our meetings that Jack attended with his loving wife, Shirley. They were always helping our Society with donations to the Flower & Vegetable Show, or willingly lending us their pick-up truck and trailer for the Plant Sale or donating evergreen boughs for numerous Christmas decorating projects. Together Jack and Shirley preserved the beautiful Shaver Homestead on Garner Road. If you’ve never visited there, you should put it on your list to do.

With that great love for Ancaster, Shirley has generously donated $2500 to our Society, through the Shaver-Cranston Family Foundation, to defray our Florascape costs and/or to also fund a memorial bench in town. The decision of exactly how our Society will apply this extraoridinary donation will be decided at our February Board of Directors meeting. Thanks to the Shaver-Cranston families for their generosity. We’ll miss you, Jack.
