ADULT & COMMUNITY EDUCATION / FLAGLER TECHNICAL INSTITUTE

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Hello Flagler County!

Great things are happening in Adult and Community Education! Flagler Technical Institute’s career and technical education classes, and Adult General Education classes are in full swing. Students who wish to begin GED, Adult Basic Education, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Citizenship, Adult High School and Applied Academics may start at any time, as these are open-entry classes. It’s never too late to take that first step to achieving your educational goals!

We are happy to announce that we are a participating partner in the Carver Community Center’s “Road to Success” job training program grant awarded by the Center for Business Excellence. We will be providing ABE/GED classes during the day at Carver Community Center as part of this program, and the grant will assist students with their tuition. The program is designed for out of school youth, 16-21 years old. For information on this program contact Cheryl Massaro at 437-7540 ext. 5101 or e-mail [email protected].

Several programs in career and technical education at Flagler Technical Institute have courses beginning this October. It’s a great time to start training for a new career! See the back pages for more information. Flagler Technical Institute is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education. Financial aid is available for some programs for those who qualify. We are also an official Pearson Vue Testing Center, offering assessment services for a wide variety of industry certifications.

In Community Education news, we have recently begun a Swim Challenge class for a group of home-schooled children, and will be starting a computer class for another group. If you are involved in home-schooling and wish to create a custom class for a group, contact Deen Wall, Community Education Coordinator, at 446-6717.

Lots of new community education courses are being offered this term. A great way to get ready for all the fun during the upcoming holidays is by joining our Fast Track – Beginning Ballroom Blast! This class will get you ready to get out on the dance floor to enjoy all those holiday parties. With the Introduction to Magic class you can train to be an entertainer! There’s a Magic class for adults and one for kids too. And we’re offering some fantastic new Photography classes that will have you shooting pictures like a pro.

So, sit back, relax, and flip through our pages – find a class or program that’s right for you. Hope to see you in a class soon. Let’s all Keep Flagler Learning!

contact Sue Warner at 437-7533 x 4131. How to Write a Book in 30 DaysTo begin, we will discuss what defines a book and a little background on print and eBook formats. The class will learn how to finalize a topic, idea, working title and subtitle for their book. Then the class will learn how to line out chapters (non fiction) or scenes (fiction) for their book as the beginning of an out-line. We will work on developing a minimum of 10 chapters/scenes. Once the chapters/scenes are lined out with simple bullet point phrases, the class will learn how to break down the information into bullet point subheads which will be the backbone of their book. Once the outline is fleshed out, the instructor will use his experience in writing seven books as well as having published 17 books by various authors. He will be encouraging class attendees to make a mock-up of a cover for their book as well to help keep their motivation level up. RIDERWAITETAROT 101NEW In most people’s minds, “Tarot card reading”

means a woman in flowing robes, leaning over a small table in a candle-lit room foretelling impend-ing doom. But that is not the case and is a miscon-ception. Tarot cards can be extremely helpful in giv-ing insight, guidance and direction into one’s life circumstance. Sometimes we “can’t see the forest for the trees,” as we are often too wrapped up in our per-sonal “life situation” to see clearly. We are often not sure which is the best path to take and this is where the Tarot can clearly show us a direction depending upon the choices we make. With some simple tools, we can all learn to read the cards. We will be learning how to predict time, interpretation of the cards us-ing our intuition and using unique spreads. Come join us and have some fun, we always have a good time in class. Must have, or obtain a Rider Waite Tarot Deck.

Chakra Clearing

NEW Are you tired of being tired? Sick of being sick? Cleaning and clearing chakras has been going

on for thousands of years. The chakras are energy centers that exist in the aura of a human being. They begin in the physical body and move outward, somewhat like the petals of a daisy. When these chakras are blocked, disease and dissatisfaction re-sult. Blocked chakra can affect our self-esteem, our ability to give and receive love and can affect our communication involving the throat. The goal is to open and balance each chakra, taking a chakra each week to work on. There are exciting ways to do this through foods, colors, self-healing techniques, using crystals and stones, to name a few.

Balance, Stretch, & Strengthening For SeniorsJoin our gentle exercise class for aging bones and muscles. As we age, we all lose some of our sense of balance but it can be regained through specific ex-ercises. What a great way to reduce the possibility of tripping and falling! We also begin to lose bone den-sity which can be regained by working with weights. Weights (resistance training) can actually begin to reverse loss of bone mass, therefore reducing the risk of osteoporosis and stress fractures. Recent re-search has proven that women involved in weight training versus just balance & toning exercises do better at cognitive and memory function. The exer-cises are gentle and can be adapted to your particu-lar needs. Standing, sitting, floor work, whatever works for you! Please wear comfortable clothing and bring 2 bottles of water and light weights if you have them.

from is just as important, but this is the problem for most beginning photographers – how to set the light and what kind of light. We will use professional tungsten light, incandescent light, umbrellas, reflec-tors, soft boxes, florescent light and so on. We’ll learn how to set softer or harder lights for portraits, flow-ers, still-life, use fill flash with your on-camera flash, and explore the best light for nature shots at differ-ent times of day.

using the often overlooked Photoshop Brushes. We will even make our own brushes to have more tools at our disposal. We’ll photograph a subject, transfer it into Photoshop and, with the use of layers and brushes, make our masterpiece. This class is full of fun and discovery.

SWIMMING

Synchronized SwimmingBallet in the water! Synchronized swimming is not only beautiful but is a great way for your child to make friends, tone their entire body, and learn fun dance moves in the water. The Synchro Belles Team is a nationally ranked synchronized swimming team and 7 time State Champions. The only pre-requisite for the beginners level is to possess the ability to float on their backs and swim one length of the pool - above or under water. It is also helpful if the child has any dance, gymnastic, tumbling or swimming background, but these are not mandatory. Swim-mers not only learn to set and achieve athletic goals but also focus on maintaining high academic stan-dards. The Synchro Belles welcome your child to be a part of this growing sport.
