TIDBITS® CHOWS DOWN ON

INTERESTING EDIBLESby Sarah Bates

Food nourishes your body just like Tidbits nourishes your brain! Get a double helping with these bits and bites that you might not have known about the things we eat and drink!• Did you know there are over 300 different

varieties of honey in North America alone? Honey, a natural energy restorer, was not only used by ancient cultures but it has been found in ancient Egyptian tombs. There have also been discoveries of 4,500 year old Egyptians carvings which are some of the earliest depictions of bee keeping.

• Do you know what a pluot is? It’s a complex hybrid between a plum and an apricot. It’s traits tend to be more plum-like, with a smooth skin. They are very sweet and intense in flavor and very juicy. They are not to be confused with an aprium, which is also a plum/apricot hybrid that is 1/4th plum and 3/4th apricot. Another plum/apricot hybrid is the plumcot. What’s a plum+apricot+peach? That one’s called a Peacotum.

• The island nation of Grenada in the Caribbean was named for the pomegranate. So was grenadine syrup and the grenade. All come from the Latin root word punica granatum, which means pomegranate.

HERE COMES FALL! (continued):• Why do leaves change colors anyway? Leaves are green because of

the chlorophyll inside of them. As the days get shorter, trees begin to prepare for winter. The trees begin to close up shop for winter and in the process begin to lose their green chlorophyll, revealing colors like orange and yellow. Continued chlorophyll making in the autumn is what turns some leaves red and brown is the left over waste inside of a leaf. Cool autumn nights in combination with the glucose inside them cause some leaves, like maple leaves, to turn purple.

• The autumn equinox takes place on September 22 this year. An equinox occurs when both poles are equal distance from the sun, whereas a solstice takes place when one pole is as close to the sun as it can get. The autumnal equinox actually marks the middle of autumn in such Asian countries as China, Japan and Korea.

• The Chinese, and several other East Asian cultures, divide their years into twenty-four solar terms rather than four seasons. Each term is marked by the degree at which the earth is tilted. Mid-Autumn is marked by the Earth being titled at 180º and is celebrated with the mid-autumn festival known as Zhongqiu Jie. Along with New Year, it is one of the most important festivals of the year for the Chinese. The festival is particularly marked by moon themed activities since the harvest moon is believed to be the fullest, roundest moon of the year. Moon worship is also an ancient custom, dating back thousands of years, making the harvest moon a particularly celebratory thing. Families and friends gather to admire the moon, visit with loved ones, light lanterns or attend lantern shows and eat moon cakes during this festival. This year, the festival will take place on October 3, 2009. The festival generally occurs anywhere between mid-September and early October.

HERE COMES FALL! (continued):

• Did you know that there was a period of time in France where the new year began in autumn and not in January? After the French revolution and during the days of the French First Republic at the turn of the 18th century, the French Republican calendar was used. The calendar was divided into twelve months, the same as modern calendars. However, the months were all thirty days long and were divided into three decades, unlike our four week months. Each decade was divided into ten days, which was divided into ten hours, which was divided into 100 minutes and so on. The important part so far as autumn is concerned is that the calendar began in the month of Vendémiaire and on the autumn equinox on the 22nd, 23rd or 24th of September. The entire calendar was very precise but was abolished by Napoléon in 1806, giving the calendar just over twelve years of use.

• The word autumn came originally from Old French, where is was written autompne. However, the Old French word came from the Latin word autumnus. Before the use of autumn in modern English language, the most commonly accepted term was harvest, which came from the Old English hærfest.

• While maple syrup is more traditionally thought of in the winter, the maple trees which produce the syrup are some of the most brilliantly colored trees during fall. Did you know that Vermont is the largest producer of maple syrup in the U.S.? Likewise, Canada is the producer of a majority of maple syrup in the world and Quebec is the largest producer in Canada. Maple trees, known for their bright red color in the fall, can be seen throughout North America, Europe and Asia. The changing of the maple leaves is called momijigari in Japan.

HERE COMES FALL! (continued):

• While we tend to think of the Mayflower only during the month of November, it’s good to remember when the Mayflower left England as well! The Pilgrims left England on September16 and sailed for sixty-six days to reach Plymouth, Massachusetts. They started out in Southampton, England, which is a coastal town in south England. Did you know that Southampton is also famous for being the port in which the Titanic departed in 1912?

• Another traditional sign of autumn is the cornucopia, or the Horn of Plenty. While we also tend to associate this with the Pilgrims and Thanksgiving, the symbolism behind the horn actually dates to the Greeks and the 5th century B.C. In Latin, cornu means horn and copia means plenty, making cornucopia literally mean “horn of plenty.” Greek mythology says that while Zeus was playing as a child, the horn of his pet goat Amalthea broke off. The broken off horn had great power and thereafter became a symbol for plenty, as whoever was in possession of the horn would be granted whatever he or she desired. In history and today, the horn is depicted as hollow and filled with a bounty of fruits and vegetables and has come to symbolize the bounty of the fall harvest.

• Did you know that America has its own Stonehenge? America’s Stonehenge claims an accurate astronomical calendar made up of the structures on site and celebrates yearly astronomical events, including the autumn equinox. Located in Salem, New Hampshire, this archaeological site is made up of large structures made of stone. There are many theories about the origins of America’s Stonehenge, although carbon dating has placed some of the charcoal pits over two thousand years ago. The site is open year round from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and offers a variety of entertainment for its visitors to enjoy, including alpacas!

TIDBITS ALL OVER THE WORLD:

RUSSIATrekking into mainland Europe and through the Ural mountains, we arrive in the Russian Federation. Let’s get ready to do some traveling as we talk about the largest country in the world.• Russia spans across the entirety of Asia and nearly half of Europe. It

shares land borders with fourteen countries, including Norway and China. But let’s not forget it’s maritime borders - Russia also shares waters with the United States and Sweden. Russia has been ethnic groups ranging from descendants of Vikings to Mongolians and everywhere in between. There are snow capped peaks and vast fertile valleys for farming. It’s safe to say you can find a little bit of everything in this vast and diverse country.

• From end to end, at its widest, Russia is 5,000 miles (8,000 kilometers) wide. Along a longitudinal axis, Russia is at is widest 4,100 miles (6,600 kilometers). Did you know massive country spans eleven time zones?

• The last tsar of Russia was Nicholas II. Officially titled Nicholas II, Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias, he reigned from 1894 until the Russian Revolution in 1917. Nicholas is perhaps most often known for his imprisonment and death at the hands of the Bolsheviks, but perhaps most well known is his daughter, Grand Duchess Anastasia. The subject of many movies, Anastasia was rumored to have survived the assassination of the royal family in 1918. The 1997 animated film Anastasia was roughly based on her life, though there are many inaccuracies. There were several women who claimed they were the escaped Duchess, including the well known Anna Anderson. However, DNA evidence has now proven that all the family perished in 1918. The family were made saints in 1981.

• St. Basil’s Cathedral is perhaps one of the most well known example of Russian architecture. With its brightly colored, intricately patterned spires, St. Basil’s stands out on Red Square in the capital of Moscow. Built from 1555 to 1561, it was commissioned by tsar known as Ivan the Terrible (Ivan IV). St. Basil’s was originally named the “Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin by the Moat.” However, St. Basil was very popular in Moscow at the time the cathedral was built and the nickname was quickly adopted.

• Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is a Russian composer perhaps best known for his ballets Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker. Also responsible for the 1812 Overture, Tchaikovsky attended the St. Petersburg Conservatory from 1862-1865.

RIDE ‘EM COWBOYHowdy, pardner! Tidbits saddles up this week as we head to the Wild West and give you all the facts about the fast shootin’, highfalutin’ gun slingin’ world of the cowboy. Giddy up, buckeroo but don’t reach for the sky! You’ll need both hands as we get to ridin’ into the sunset - get along, little doggies!• Just where did the term cowboy come from? Both the name and the figure have origins in Spain. The Spanish word vaquero was the word for someone who rode a horse while working with cattle. It has roots in the Spanish word vaca which means cow. Cowboy seems to be a literal translation of the Spanish word.• So how did the cowboy and the term cowboy get to the American West? Cowboys, cattle and horses both arrived in America when Spanish settlers brought them along.• And what is a cowboy without his horse? Do you remember the names of the horses that carried these famous horsemen? The fictional character Pecos Bill rode the famous Widow Maker while living legend John Wayne rode the equally famous Duke. Buffalo Bill had two horses, Isham and Charlie and who can forget Will Rogers’ horses Comanche and Teddy? And, one of this author’s favorites - The Lone Ranger’s horse is well remembered in his famous line, “Hi, ho, Silver! Away!”• Have you had your Arbuckle’s today? Points to you if you know what we’re referring to - Arbuckle’s is cowboy slang for a good ol’ cup of joe. The name came from the John and Charles Arbuckle of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1865, they sold a preroasted coffee bean that became as synonymous with coffee to a cowboy as Starbucks is to us today. And did you know you can still enjoy a cup of Arbuckle’s today? Visit www.arbucklecoffee.com and enjoy yourself a cup of coffee straight from the wild west.• We can’t talk about the West without mentioning the gold rush. Over

300,000 people went west in search of gold during the mid-1800s. But did you know that the world’s largest gold nugget wasn’t found in America but rather in Australia? The nugget was called the “Welcome Stranger” nugget, weighed 172.7 pounds (78.38 kilograms) and was discovered in 1869. The largest nugget still in existence also came from Australia and is called the “Hand of Faith” nugget. It was actually found very recently - 1980, in fact. It weighs sixty-one pounds, eleven ounces - that’s twenty-eight kilograms! It did eventually make it’s way out west - the nugget is currently on display in the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

• You’ll find a few good cowboys in the Lone Star State. The name of the American state Texas actually has a rather interesting origin. Texas came from the Spanish word tejas and came from the Indian tribe of the area, the Caddo people. The Spanish word tejas came from their word was taysha, which means “friend” or “ally.”

• A western movie isn’t a western movie without a scene of some cowboys playing cards. There are many interesting hands that can be used to win a game of cards, but the name of one hand has its roots in Old West lore. While the term existed before the death of James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok, a “dead man’s hand” became the specific term for a pair or black aces and black eights in a game of cards after his death. It is said that when Hickok was murdered, this is the hand he was holding, with the last card being either a jack or queen of diamonds.
