Scholarship ScamsAs with any area involving money, findingscholarships for college is full of potential tobe scammed.Treat your hunt for scholarshipfunds the same as you would any otherfinancial transaction -- with caution. Here aresome tips:

• Avoid matching services that involve payinga fee. Use the Internet instead, and lookonline for free services matching studentswith scholarships. Chances are thescholarship scammers are using the sameonline service and will charge you forinformation you can get for free. Rule ofthumb:Your only cash outlay to get ascholarship or information should be the costof a stamp on an envelope.

• Some matching services might claim thatthey have information you can only get fromthem, or that they have a high matchingsuccess rate. Beware anyone claiming tohave special or unique information.

• Ignore unsolicited written offers or phonecalls. If you didn't specifically ask forscholarship information from a particularcompany, it's likely a scam. Legitimatescholarship groups aren't going to hunt youdown and ask you to take their money.

• Don't pay application fees, or any fee calleda "processing" fee or any amount in advancefor a promised scholarship.

$&¢ Dollars and SenseBY David Uffington

• There are no guarantees. No matchingservice can deliver on a promise that you'll geta scholarship. Beware, too, promises to refundyour money if you don't get a scholarship.

• If you talk to someone offering a scholarshipon the phone, take notes. Get names, datesand times of conversations, and what was said.(You'll need that information if you getscammed or even suspect a scam and want toreport it.)

• Don't give out Social Security numbers orbanking or credit-card information.

• Don't be rushed. If there's a "time limit,"ignore the offer. If anything sounds at all like ahigh-pressure tactic ("You have to sign uptoday or the money will be gone!" or "I can onlyhold this scholarship for you for a little while."),hang up the phone.

• Avoid scholarship seminars. You'll besubjected to high-pressure tactics to part withyour money.

If you want to report a scam, call the FederalTrade Commission at 1-877-382-4357.While itwon't handle your individual problem, it doesgather numbers and look for patterns. Alsonotify the attorney general in your state.

David Uffington regrets that he cannot personallyanswer reader questions, but will incorporate theminto his column whenever possible.Write to him incare of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail [email protected].

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I come from a family of sixgirls, and I am the youngest. My five sisters allhave had gallstones and have had their

gallbladders removed. Am I doomed to the same fate?My sisters are large-bodied. I'm not. Could their weighthave influenced gallstone formation? -- E.H.ANSWER: Family history of gallstones is a definitefactor in the risk of coming down with stones.Yourfamily proves the point. However, it's not the solefactor, so you're not doomed to having gallstones.Obesity is a strong influence on stone formation. Onthat score, you're in a safe zone.A high-calorie, high-fat diet disposes a person togallstones.Rapid weight loss is another factor that favors thedevelopment of stones. Cholesterol is the mainconstituent of most gallstones. Rapid weight lossmobilizes cholesterol from body storage depots, andthat's why it can bring on gallstones.Estrogen is another contributor to stones. It increasesthe uptake of cholesterol from food, and it increasesthe amount of cholesterol in bile. Bile is made by theliver. It aids in digesting fat. When bile becomessaturated with cholesterol, stones form. You're home clear on most of the things that contributeto stone formation. You're not destined to be a victim.***DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Some time ago you had arecipe for a natural laxative. I cut it out and used it, andit worked. I stopped using it, but now I need it againand I can't find it.Would you please, please repeat it? Iam in bad shape now. -- R.K.ANSWER: It's not my recipe. I got it from someoneelse. You mix 2 cups of bran with 2 cups of applesauce and1 cup of unsweetened prune juice. Bran is the stuffremoved from grains during refining. It's great fiber.Fiber keeps undigested food moist as it moves throughthe digestive tract. You can buy bran in health-foodstores.Refrigerate the mixture, and take 2 or 3 tablespoonstwice a day.You can add any ingredient you want to this mixture tomake it more to your liking -- fruits, nuts, raisins, whatever.Constipation is endemic in countries where refinedgrains are in vogue. The booklet on this topic is adiscussion of how best to deal with it. Readers canorder a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 504W, Box536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check ormoney order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada withthe recipient's printed name and address. Please allowfour weeks for delivery.***DEAR DR. DONOHUE:What does "essential" in frontof "hypertension" mean? My doctor writes it down asmy diagnosis on every form I give him. I say I havehigh blood pressure, and that always does it for me. --J.T.ANSWER: Essential hypertension is the common kindof hypertension -- high blood pressure. It means thereis no other process going on that's raising bloodpressure. "Secondary" hypertension indicates thatblood pressure has risen because of some otherillness, like an adrenal gland tumor.***Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answerindividual letters, but he will incorporate them in hiscolumn whenever possible. Readers may write him orrequest an order form of available health newsletters atP.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Regis Philbin is like "Old Man River" -- he "jes keeps rollin' along." First, forthose of you who have asked: No, there is no feud between Philbin and DavidLetterman. Although Dave makes cracks about Regis, they are, in reality, good

friends. Regis' morning show with Kelly Ripa also"keeps rollin' along," and it looks as if "Who Wants toBe a Millionaire?" also could go somewhere. ... Moreon his private life: As far as I know, Regis was born inNew York and attended Notre Dame University. Hewas named Regis after his father's alma mater, aCatholic boys' school. He was married and divorcedfrom Kay Faylan, and then married Joy Senese.Has four children: Amy, Dan, Joanne and Jennifer. And this should be enough about Regis for now.Beyonce is not only beautiful but can sing herheart out. She also is a very good actress, asproven in her film "Obsessed." Offers arepouring in for dramatic roles, roles for asinger and every kind of movie one canimagine. Call it the "Beyonce Bounce," be-cause if ever a singer-actress is bouncing tothe top of the list, it's Beyonce.Amanda Peet joins the cast of "Guilliver's

Travels." It's the modern version of the time-old classic wherein travel writer Lemuel Gulliver goes

to the Bermuda Triangle on an assignment. He ends up on thesecret island of Lilliput, which is inhabited by little people. Jack Black

plays Gulliver and Peet plays his editor and love interest. Amanda was born in NewYork and attended Columbia University. She then studied acting under the tutelageof Uta Hagen. And guess what? She can recite the entire dialogue from "Tootsie"and "A Chorus Line!"Barbara Walters' autobiography, "Audition," is now out in paperback and selling tobeat records. In this edition there is an afterword by Barbara, adding to the goodread. Meanwhile, Miss W. goes on and on as one of the top femme journalists everto hit the TV tube and other outlets. AND next time you see her on the tube or else-where, get a gander of her gams. She's got the best-looking pair of legs ever be-stowed on a woman.Aside to Noreen K. of San Diego: I wish I could answer you, but I also would like toknow why a broadcaster always says, "It's on our sister station." Why don't they eversay "our brother station"? It's a mystery. If I ever learn the answer, I will surely letyou know.

BITS 'N' PIECES: Joke running around Tinseltown: When all the pirating wastaking place off the coast of Somalia, they should have called on Peter Pan and the Lost Boysto handle the "Captain Hooks," ... Another honor for Meryl Streep: the Life AchievementAward from the Rome International Film Festival. ... If President Barack Obama had not beenelected, he surely could have landed roles in movies. He's personable, can act and is at ease infront of a camera. ... Newest fad out this way: No more flowers growing in front yards. It's allvegetables --and what a great idea that is! Kyle Busch Is His Own ManRICHMOND, Va. -- Why is Kyle Busch sogood? That is, apart from his obviouslyimpressive skill level.Busch is ambitious. He wants it all. He races inevery race he can. At Richmond, he didn't justwin on Saturday and Sunday nights. He won atSouthside Speedway on the previous Thursdaynight. At age 24, he has 15 Sprint Cup victories, 24 inthe Nationwide Series and 11 in Trucks. That's atotal of 50. Busch's mind is like a calculator. He'sconcocted the notion that maybe he can win 200races in the three series combined before he hangsup his helmet. In one sense, it's kind of meaningless. RichardPetty, of course, won 200 Cup races -- and nonein the lower series. Combining victories would belike counting the Double-A home runs of abig-league catcher. By that standard, Crash Davis(Kevin Costner's character in "Bull Durham")would be in the Hall of Fame. There's something remarkable, though, in a manwho wants to achieve something no one elsewanted to try. This is a kid who loves to race ... toan extent that borders on the absurd.

Pull over! See those lights? That might be a dirttrack. Let me call my guy on the cell.Maybe he can hitchup the trailerand get myLate Modelup here.Busch is alsoabsolutelyunafraid ofbeing himself. Many driversare little morethan cardboardcutouts. Theyhide behind theadvice ofhandlers, restingtheir assumption onthe notion that, if theykiss up enough, nice thingswill be written about them. The driver who has won 11 ofNASCAR's last 46 races shares with the drivers ofyore -- Bobby Allison, Darrell Waltrip, HarryGant, et al. -- a thirst for competition. Buschdidn't grow up in Taylorsville, though. He grewup in Las Vegas. He has that trademark flair forthe dramatic. Why does he bow to the hostilemasses? He claimed Vegas had nothing to do withit."I'm here to be myself, man," Busch said in thewee hours of Sunday after the May 2 Sprint Cuprace. "I am who I am. Everybody is who they are,

for whatever reason. I don't think it's necessarilythe way you're raised or where you're

raised, or whatever. I just thinkwhat you believe in, what your

beliefs are, what allhappens around you asyou grow up and stuff."For me, it's fun tocome out here and,I guess, play thevillain rolesometimes, andyet be liked othertimes. It's alwayscool to have thataspect in this sport.Even if I wasn't in

this sport, you know, doing something else,

you've got to be happywith the way you're living life

and doing what you're doing.Otherwise, it's not worth living or not

worth doing what you're doing."Kyle Busch is his own man in a world where feware at his age. His theme song ought to be "I GottaBe Me.".

We make it easy !

Totell the truth, I thought it'd be more like getting a cat."--Anne Lamott on motherhood

Not long ago I watched a mother go through a painful experience. Her young son had prepared a project for a contest. When it was his turn to exhibit his work, the project literally fell apart. She tenderly escorted her crying son away from the crowd. There were a lot of pieces topick up that evening. But moms are used to that, right? As moms we learn early there are places we can't go with our children -- places where theyhave to grow and mend their hurts on their own. Sometimes we try to meddle by leading theway through some of the rough spots. Sometimes we are only getting in the way of thelessons they are here to learn. When my husband was little he visited his aunt and uncle on their farm. One time there werechicken eggs hatching, and one was having a difficult time getting out of its shell. The kidswanted to help the chick out, but their uncle warned that the chicken had to learn to peck itsown way out or it would die. What seemed like help would actually be harmful. That's a hard lesson to get in parenting, isn't it?I've enlisted the help of some moms to pass on encouragement from the lessons they'velearned in their parenting. Hope you see yourself in their words."I feel like all my mistakes have become my greatest assets for future reference. My oldestson is a teenager, and he still likes me. What a blessing. My twins wrote a letter for thenewspaper on Mother's Day, and I couldn't believe they were talking about me. I'm also astepmother. They are so cool; their mother has done a wonderful job. I love them as much asmy own, and to think I thought I didn't like kids. I was just afraid of screwing up that word"mom."My greatest experience of being a mom is to take it one day at a time and try to be the bestmom I can be, and if I fail one day -- which is a given -- I try again the next day. The wholekey for me being a mom is never quitting, even though day after day I feel like I can't do itanymore. And when I want to run away, one of them will say or do something to make mesee how blessed I am. I'm so grateful that God has allowed me to be a part of all their lives."--Christy, mom and step-mom of six"When I became a parent, I realized my mother wasn't as dumb as I thought she was when Iwas growing up."--Kim, mother of one and grandmother to 10"I experienced the pain of my son being a soldier. Today, I pray for every mother withchildren serving in the military. Hopefully, their burden of concern divided among us allwill be easier for them to bear."--Melissa, mother of four"Put away the vacuum cleaner; bake some cookies and your house will always be full."--Carol, mother of two"Make more mud pies and memories."--Christine, mother of two and grandmother to six"Time slips away so fast, and you can't go back and undo your mistakes! It makes mystomach hurt when I think of things that I did wrong as a mom. But then I think of all thegood things we have shared ... and can't get the grin off my face or the joy out of my heart."--Dana, mother of oneWrite to Taprina Milburn in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O.
