CELEBRATES POP WITHFATHERLY FACTS
by Sarah Bates
Father’s Day is the 3rd Sunday in June every year. It isa time to celebrate dad – and what better way to cele-brate than to learn some fantastic, fatherly facts?
• Did you know that Grace Kelly’s father, John B. Kelly Sr.,was a triple Olympic Gold Medal winner in rowing?• In 1990, both Ken Griffey Jr. and Sr. played for the SeattleMariners. It was the first time a father and son had playedtogether on the same team in the major league.• Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was originally named Michaellike his father. After a trip to Germany, Michael Sr. changedboth their names to Martin after the Protestant leader.• A. A. Milne, author of Winnie-the-Pooh, based the charac-ter of Christopher Robin, Winnie-the-Pooh and friends offof his son and his stuffed animals.• The Egyptian deity Amon, represented by the ram, is thefather of the moon.• Father’s Day will celebrate its 100th Anniversary in 2010.• Grammatically it should be Mothers’ Day and Fathers’Day, as we are celebrating multiple mothers and fathers. However, it was initially spelled on the proposal to make it aholiday as Father’s Day and that just stuck.turn the page for more!• Research shows that over 110 million Father’s Day cardsare exchanged annually. 50% of those are purchased fordads, 20% are purchased for husbands.

Don't Toss ThoseCredit-Card Leaflets
Credit-card companies are scramblingfast and furious to get every dollar theycan before new credit regulations takeeffect.
If you get a leaflet in your next creditcard statement, read it. That information(which is required to be sent to you) isto let you know what is changing onyour credit-card terms. Sit down with ared pen, read every single word andunderline the important parts.
Changes described in those leafletsinclude:
• Less time to make your payment. Thenumber days to make your paymentcould be reduced, so be sure mail it atleast seven days before it's due. (Thenew regulation will require thatstatements be mailed to consumers atleast 21 days in advance.)
• How your payment will be allocated. Ifyou have both cash advance andpurchases on your card, beware anynotification saying that the one with thelower interest rate will be credited first --while the higher interest-rate balancekeeps accruing. (The new regulation willrequire that money be applied to thehigher interest-rate balance first.)
• Your interest rate could go up. This iswhere we're seeing some dramatic
$&¢ Dollars and
SenseBY David Uffington
increases in the leaflets. Not only arerates going up on new purchases, but onyour existing balances as well. (The newregulation will ban credit-card companiesfrom changing your rate on existingbalances unless you've been late withpayments.) Additionally, they won't beable to tack new fees onto existingbalances.
• If you have a new card and are countingon introductory rates (perhaps to pay offa major purchase you made when yougot the card), your rate could changebefore you get to the end of theintroductory period. (The new regulationswill ban this practice and requirepromotional rates to remain in effect forsix months.)
The Credit Cardholders' Bill of Rights Actof 2009 won't take effect for one yearafter becoming law. That's a long, longtime for the credit-card industry to playfast and loose.
Lenders do, however, have to keepsending those leaflets when they intendto make changes. That's going to be youronly warning of changes to your account. So, keep your red pen handy.
David Uffington regrets that he cannot personallyanswer reader questions, but will incorporate theminto his column whenever possible.Write to him incare of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail [email protected].

Jeff Gordon Still a WonderCONCORD, N.C. -- Jeff Gordon, who will turn38 in August, remains remarkably youthful. It is, however, misleading, as apparent youthoften is."I've always said, as a race-car driver, that younever stop learning ... ever," Gordon says.Gordon is one of those athletes about whom thephrase "forever young" seems appropriate. Hisvoice remains that of a teenager, still etched inwonder even as the words coming from hismouth evoke experience and maturity.Earlier this season, Gordon won the 82nd race ofhis career. Only five drivers -- Richard Petty(200), David Pearson (105), Bobby Allison (84),Darrell Waltrip (84) and Cale Yarborough (83) --have won more. Only two, Petty and DaleEarnhardt, have won more than fourchampionships.Gordon won officially for the first time in theCoca-Cola 600 on May 29, 1994, almost 15 yearsago."I was thrilled to get my first win here," he said of
the track. "The first time I came down toCharlotte to drive a stock car was out inRockingham at Buck Baker Driving School, and Iremember driving by the speedway, wanting tosee the speedway, and I was just blown away bythis place. Then, getting a chance to drive a carhere for the
firsttime, I justfell in love with it from dayone."It's pretty ironic to me and blew me away that Igot my first Cup win at this race track, especially
in such a big event like the 600."In retrospect, that victory was a prophecy. Itforetold greatness. Truth is, it wasn't that much ofa surprise at the time. Gordon had already beendeclared a boy wonder, which is why, much to thechagrin of Ray Evernham (his crew chief at thetime), fans and journalists began referring to himas Wonder Boy.Gordon, who was born in Vallejo, Calif., butserved his racer's apprenticeship in Pittsboro,Ind., is now an aging superhero. It wouldn't besurprising given his backaches -- after all, drivers hit a lot of walls -- if there weren't acertain expectation that the once WonderBoy is still "faster than a speedinglocomotive and able to leap tall buildingsat a single bound."So Gordon grunts a little when he wakesup in the morning. He's a family guy witha beautiful wife and a lovely daughter. Theboy from the sprint cars who once seemedsuspended in adolescence is now a man, fully
formed, coping with all the obligations andcommitments conferred by time.

Myfavorite part of Family Circle magazine used to be the back section that listedclever tips on how to be organized -- ways to arrange your paperwork so that youcould find important documents (permission forms, health records) or ways to
shape up your kids' rooms so they could find their shoes each morning. In all the years I've read the magazine, I've only incorporated one of those suggestions --buying a basket to put at the foot of my staircase. Our basket never gets emptied;however, it's a great place to throw things.Hello. I'm an unorganized parent. I've spent years feeling strongly that there was anorganized person inside of me waiting to bust out. In the past few months, I've had toadmit that what I'm feeling must be nothing more than a case of indigestion. At 41, I may never be the type of person who, when taking coupons to the grocery store, first checks to see if they've expired. Or the kind of mom who knows where everything is,such as the new laces I bought yesterday for my son's tennis shoes. You know you are not a member of the Organized Parents Club and that things are out oforder when:• Your kid has to pull blue jeans from the dirty clothes hamper to wear because youforgot to do laundry over the weekend.• You carry a day planner just so you will look as if you belong in the Organized ParentsClub.• You have a brain lockdown when you enter a store, forgetting what you were supposedto buy (supplies for a science-fair project due tomorrow). Instead you purchase toiletpaper and panty hose. Neither of which will be useful for the assignment. Therefore, asecond trip to the store is necessary.• Birthday presents for your kids' friends are bought on the way to the party and wrappedin the car (if you remembered to bring tape and scissors, that is; otherwise you run backinto the store to buy a birthday bag).• You could take a friend to lunch with the money you've wasted on library late charges.• An invitation with RSVP printed on it usually gets buried under paperwork and leavesyou with the haunting feeling of "Remembering Something Vaguely Perhaps."• You finally remember to put something on your calendar -- a meteor shower thathappens once every century -- but you learn that you marked the wrong date and thatyou've missed the event. "I guess if I live to be 110 I'll get to see it," your miffed kid tellsyou.• Burned-out light bulbs in your house are changed about once every decade.• Your kids are scared to open your closets and cabinets. Doing so will result in anavalanche and will require a search team to find your children.• You collect "How to Be Organized" books and dream of the day you will finally makethe transformation.Thinking about becoming organized counts for something.
