LOVE OFFERING FOR PUERTO RICO
Please consider celebrating World Communion Sunday by making a gift to be
used for disaster-relief efforts in Puerto Rico. The nation has experienced catastro-
phic devastation, leaving the nation without power and infrastructure. Efforts to
help the people of Puerto Rico are underway, but resources and prayers are needed
for this unprecedented natural disaster. Please use the envelope system and label
your envelope “Puerto Rico” and include your name and amount of the offering.
We will receive the offering this Sunday and next Sunday. Thank you for demon-
strating your generosity for Puerto Rico.

PASTOR’S COLUMN
He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multi-
ply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You
will be enriched in every way for your great generosity, which will produce
thanksgiving to God through us; for the rendering of this ministry not only
supplies the needs of the saints but also overflows with many thanksgivings
to God. Through the testing of this ministry you glorify God by your obedi-
ence to the confession of the gospel of Christ and by the generosity of your
sharing with them and with all others, while they long for you and pray for
you because of the surpassing grace of God that he has given you. Thanks
be to God for his indescribable gift! (2 Corinthians 9:10-15, NRSV)
When Paul wrote to the Corinthians in what has become known as Second
Corinthians in our Bibles, he asked the Corinthian Church to prepare an of-
fering. The Corinthians were not perfect, by any means. Simply read their
grievances in First Corinthians, and then Paul’s anguish in Second Corin-
thians. However, as I have said on many occasions, I believe that we receive
some of Paul’s best theology in Second Corinthians, as it arises out of his
passion – his gut – and his heart.
On this occasion Paul was not be certain about his relationship with the
Corinthians. The Corinthians, in turn, may not have been certain about how
they felt about Paul. Yet, Paul approached the Corinthians with boldness to
ask them to prepare a collection for the Jerusalem church. The Jerusalem
Church faced trials. Her people were hungry and faced persecution under
Roman occupation. However, they also were suspect of Paul’s program of
bringing the gospel to the Gentiles. Paul planned to journey back to Jerusa-
lem one final time, knowing the danger. When he arrived, he planned to pre-
sent this gift to the church. He wanted to share with the Jerusalem Church
that the Gentiles were with them, and wanted to stand in solidarity with
them.
Note this: everything Paul teaches about giving in 2 Corinthians 8-9 is in
relation to this gift he plans to bring to Jerusalem. It has everything to do
with mission, and rescuing people who are in trouble.
This Sunday and Next Sunday, October 1 & 8, we will have another op-
portunity to make a difference in the lives of hurting people. Hurricane
Maria caused Puerto Rico, a Caribbean nation, and United States territory,
apocalyptic devastation. Some have said that Puerto Rico has been set back
thirty years. Others are saying that 95% of the nation’s infrastructure has
been wiped out. People are hurting and dying.
This Sunday is World Communion Sunday. Let’s give a generous gift to
the people of Puerto Rico, and stand in solidarity with the people of Puerto
Rico, and give a gift that God can use to make a difference in the lives of the
people. May God take this gift, multiply it, so that he can reveal his presence
in the midst of a very dark time.
Grace and peace,
Tim

parents are Drs. Scott and Jane Kirkpatrick. No formal church shower is

Andy are registered at Amazon, REI and Bed, Bath & Beyond.
During the Hilltop Festival on October 7, I will be holding a yard sale in
front of the church to benefit the victims of the hurricanes that recently dev-
astated our nation. 100 percent of the proceeds will go to helping those who
lost all they had. We have books, educational toys, games, clothing, cos-
tumes, and a lot more! Monetary donations are greatly appreciated if you

Morning Prayer/The Lord’s Prayer Tim Marsh
Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil:
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.

Anthem “The One” Courtney
On the swiftest wings of morning, from the highest King of Heaven,
Comes a holy invitation to a feast.
Interceding for His children, at the right hand of the Father,
He invites us all, the most unto the least.
Chorus:
The One who knows your name has bid you, “Come.”
The One who bore your shame, God’s only Son,
has prepared a celebration as a gift from God above;
A sacrament of peace, a feast of love.
Gather now around God’s table, feel the splendor of the Savior,
As He serves the fragrant bread and pours the wine.
Then in grateful adoration of His blood and body given,
praise the One who offers us the feast divine. (Chorus) CCLI#1858884

have no organ for him to play. We look forward to sharing many years of
ministry with Ken and his wife, Lorena.
