BAPTIST CHILDREN’S HOMES FOOD GIFT CARDS
First Baptist Church, Rutherfordton, is having an ingathering of $25 gift cards from either Walmart, Food Lion, or Ingles. Our goal was to receive 25 of these gift cards by Sunday, May 12, however we have only met half that goal so the deadline has been extended to Sunday, June 2. If you can help us with this goal that would be wonderful! You may bring them to the Church Office. A clear plastic box on the office counter is available to place them in. Thank you!
JOY GROUP TO STRAWBERRY HILL/COWPENS STATE PARK
On Thursday, May 30th the JOY Group will travel to Strawberry Hill for breakfast. We will need to arrive there by 9:00 AM so we will have time to eat and shop for strawberries. We will then travel on to Cowpens National Battlefield. There we will have a movie on the historical events, tour the exhibits, and have a 1 hour tour with the ranger. As we don’t have bus transportation, everyone will be responsible for his/her own transportation. Please wear comfortable shoes because the trails are not paved. A sign up sheet for this event is located in the Welcome Center. If you intend to go, please sign up so we have the numbers for the breakfast and the tour. The tour requires 10 people to supply a ranger. If you have any questions, please call Linda Harris.
GRADUATE/SCHOLARSHIP SERVICE On Sunday, June 2 we will recognize our high school graduates in the morning worship service and will list our college graduates in that Sunday’s bulletin. We celebrate with all of you this important time of your life. If you have not let the church office know of your graduation, please do so by today. Also during the service we will be handing out our scholarships, the FBCR Youth Choir will be our worship choir, and Rev. John Miller will be preaching.

PASTOR’S COLUMN
I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”
Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. (Revelation 5:4-6, NIV)
Revelation, chapters four and five, might be two of the most powerful por-traits of God in all of Scripture. Chapter four begins with John’s vision of heaven. Everything is perfect, beautiful and in order. Creatures worshipped God constantly. The image was static, repetitive and just what John might expect of the throne room of God.
Chapter five is full of surprises. First, John sees a scroll. It is sealed. Obvi-ously, the message is important, even key to the identity and mission of God. However, who may open it? Who is worthy to receive the scroll from God, to unlock its secrets and reveal its mysteries? John saw no one creat-ed being worthy to open the scroll. Thus, he cried. Must the message re-main sealed forever? No. The angel reassured John that the message would be opened, that the “Lion of Judah” is worthy and could open the scroll.
A Lion! John knew that this was not a literal lion. However, knew the maj-esty and power of the great feline that roamed the savannahs of Africa. John expected a warrior, a majestic figure, or a conqueror. He would be everything we guys could ever dream of being.
So, John turned to behold the Lion. What he saw could not be more star-tling. It was a lamb. Even worse, it was a slaughtered lamb. John’s expec-tations had been turned upside down. The lamb played the role of the lion precisely by dying. In death, the lamb triumphed. In death, the lamb lived. In death, the lamb was worthy!
And all the creatures in heaven, earth and under the earth worshipped the Lamb in the same manner that they worshipped the One Seated on the Throne. Revelation five is dynamic, moving and stunning. And, thus, the attention given to the father is now given to the Son, who holds the key to the decrees and purposes of God.
Jesus is the decisive victory for God. In weakness, humiliation, suffering and death, Jesus conquered sin, death, and the fallenness of creation. Through death, Jesus brought life. He truly is deserving of the praise given to a king.

LENTEN/EASTER CROSS Some of you may be wondering why the old wooden cross still graces our sanctuary with the white drape on it. Normally we would take it down a Sun-day or two following Easter, however we decided to leave it up throughout the entire Easter season which will conclude on Sunday, June 2. On Sunday, June 9 we will keep the cross up one more Sunday but change the drape from a white cloth to a red cloth which is the color of Pentecost. The cross will be taken down after that service. Several church traditions from other denomina-tions leave their crosses up through Pentecost. We thought for a change, we would do the same as a reminder of what the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit has done for us.
WORSHIP LEADER TODAY We are grateful to Ben Moore in his music leadership in this morning’s wor-ship service. Beth has gone with her parents to Indiana/Illinois to her mother’s family reunion. She will be back in the office on Tuesday, May 28.
SAFETY POLICY VOTE We have changed the date concerning the vote of the safety policy. To give more time to discuss the policy, there will be a discussion of the policy on Wednesday, May 29 at 6:00 PM. It will be followed up with a vote the follow-ing Wednesday, June 5 also at 6:00 PM.
CHURCH OFFICE CLOSED The Church Office will be closed on Monday, May 27 for the Memorial Day holiday. The office will be open on Tuesday, May 28.
NO SANCTUARY CHOIR REHEARSAL There will be no Sanctuary Choir rehearsal this Wednesday, May 29. We will resume the following Wednesday, June 5 at 7:00 PM.
