COVID-19 UPDATE FOR FBCR,

MAY 2020 The Deacons and Pastor Tim Marsh met this Sunday to discuss Gov. Cooper’s three-

phase plan to relax stay-at-home orders and slowly re-open North Carolina. The Deacon Council and Ministerial Staff concur that it is imperative to remain in compliance with local and state officials throughout the duration of the COVID-19 crisis. Currently, stay-at-home orders are extended through May 8, with phasing to begin following the expiration of those or-ders. As we understand it, churches may begin on-campus activities during phase 2 of the Governors’ plans to re-open, which may not begin until the end of May. With that said, First Baptist Church will continue worship services and children/youth activities online, at least for the next few weeks. Additionally, we will follow recommended strategies and man-dates to re-open First Baptist Church gradually. We appreciate your continued patience and support during this crisis.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS! We are excited to welcome as members Kristin Heffner and A.J. Heffner. Both Kristin and A.J. are joining First Baptist based on their profession of faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the Deacon Council voted to receive Kristin and A.J. based on their testimo-ny and based upon our familiarity with them. Both Kristin and A.J. will be baptized by Rev. Beth Heffner in worship this Sunday! We celebrate Kris-tin and A.J. as they receive and affirm Jesus’ death and resurrection for their salvation and as they continue their faith journey with First Baptist Church!

BLOOD DRIVE The Red Cross is in critical need of blood donors to offset the toll the disease has taken. Although COVID-19 continues to spread worldwide, blood drives are still being held throughout the nation because the need for blood has not diminished. I will be hosting a blood drive at our church on Friday, June 5. The Red Cross has stated that they will mini-mize risk and will implement pre-cautions to ensure safety. If you are interested in donating, please contact me at [email protected] with your name, phone number and any questions you may have. Thank you for your support! -Melea Jones

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Calvin Bradley had a birthday on April 30 making him a young 94 year old and our oldest church mem-ber. Recently he was found on a roof repairing it! Way to go, Calvin!

PASTOR’S COLUMN

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:19-21, NRSV)

Sometimes, I will check the “likes” that I receive on a Facebook post. Perhaps I have shared something clever, helpful or an attempt at humor. Sometimes I will share a quotation from someone I have read. Other times, I will share a family photo. And, it is pretty neat to see what is liked and what’s not. And, I appreciate any affirmation on anything that I write. It helps me to know what is helpful and what is not.

Yet, there is a danger. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus warns against storing up treasures on earth. Why? They rot, they lose value, they decay, or thieves steal. But what are the treasures that Jesus is referencing in this memorable passage?

When reading scripture, it is important that we not simply read the words of a verse or passage and then allow our imaginations to take off. Rather, we need to know the context of the passage. And, in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus has raised the bar on righteousness. It must go beyond that of the Pharisees and Law-yers. It is a matter of the heart, not of appearance. Jesus has just discussed three practices – giving, prayer, and fasting. He is discouraged doing these three in pub-lic fashion. Why? Because the temptation is receiving praise from others.

Thus, the treasure that we are not to store on earth is the opinion of others. If we commit to following Christ, we do so for an audience of One. If we perform our faith for the praise and approval of others, the temptation is only to engage things that receive applause from others. Public opinion, our friends’ approval, and our family’s praise become the motivation for our actions. We are sculpted by their praise. We receive course-correction from their lack of approval.

Others’ approval can be intoxicating. It can be a powerful tool. The applause of others can give us energy, make us feel good for a moment. But, like any drug, we can become dependent on it for our own self-esteem. At the same time, human applause is fickle. It comes and goes. It does not endure. And, others can use that to shape us in their image. They realize their approval is a powerful tool When we give, whose praise do we seek? When we pray, whose opinion matters? When we fast, who is our audience?

If our treasure is in heaven, we are shaped by what God thinks, what God ap-proves, and what God promotes. Yes, it can be hurtful to follow our faith to its logical end, and see others scorn our values. Yes, it hurts when others withdraw their approval.

So, next time we check our social media, may we check and see if Jesus has liked our post. For, Jesus’ opinion is our treasure! Grace and peace,

Tim

SUNDAY SCHOOL OPPORTUNITY

AVAILABLE Sunday School is available through Zoom. The Out-reach Sunday School Class is continuing their Sunday School class with teacher, Rev. Billy Vaughn. This

coming Sunday, Billy will be discussing about the words of Jesus after the resurrection. You are welcome to join this class. They will have the class available at 9:30 AM each Sunday morning until further notice. If you are interested, please contact Jim or Debbie Rennie (813) 431-4104 or at [email protected] and they will assist you on how you can connect to this virtual class! Jim and Debbie have been attending our church for a cou-ple of months and have worked to set this up and we appreciate this other avenue of ministry and spiritual growth!

YOKEFELLOW FOOD MINISTRY Normally we rely on our church folks to provide the food our church has been assigned by Yokefellow to help feed the hungry of Rutherford County. Since we are not able to make that happen at this point due to the virus, for the month of April the church provided the 30 cans of fruit by purchasing and delivering them to Yokefellow. We purchased these items using your gifts through the Local Missions fund.

Savior, like a shepherd lead us, much we need Thy tender care; In Thy pleasant pastures feed us, for our use Thy folds prepare: Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, Thou hast bought us, Thine we are; Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, Thou hast bought us, Thine we are.

We are Thine; do Thou befriend us, be the guardian of our way; Keep Thy flock, from sin defend us, seek us when we go astray: Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, hear, O hear us when we pray; Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, hear, O hear us when we pray.

Early let us seek Thy favor; early let us do Thy will; Blessed Lord and only Savior, with Thy love our beings fill: Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, Thou hast bought us, Thine we are; Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, Thou hast bought us, Thine we are.
