SWING BAND:

STOMPY JONES

Direct From San Francisco’s Top Of The Mark...A Tribute to the Golden Age of Rhythm & BluesPrice: $12-$22July 17, 2 p.m.

Stompy Jones is a San Francisco based sextet, renowned for their jumpin’ rhythm, wailing improvisations, hip charm, retro style, and explosive stage show. Whether appearing at a posh supper club, concert hall, festival or cozy tavern, these journeymen of jump deliver the romping, joyous, overwhelming style of jazz that came to be known as Rock and Roll! Little David Rose’s thumpin’ stand-up bass, the double-shuffle drumming of Lee Beary, and the bounce piano of Scott Lawrence provide the rhythmic foundation of the band’s jump style. Riffing on top is the trumpet sound of Robert Dehlinger and Erv Ervin on the saxophone. These two fellas create the fireworks of vintage rhythm and blues. The charming Christopher Binnings’ soulful vocals have become a trademark of Stompy Jones.

THE OUTSIDERS – PLEIN AIR

PAINTINGS

July 20 - August 7Gallery Hours: Wed-Fri 12-5 p.m., Sat 11 a.m.-3 p.m., and 1 hour prior to performances and during intermission

Plein air artist Nikki Basch-Davis says, “Being a Plein Air painter has its difficulties, the changing light, the sudden wind, the scorching sun. However, the benefits far outweigh those obstacles. Besides the total merging with the outdoors the connection with other people is practically inevitable.

“The creative process brings us the gift of bridging over age, gender and race. Little toddlers barely reaching my palette stand wide eyed peering onto my canvas and palette. Older folks share with nostalgia how painting was something they’d like to pursue. Youth slow down their skateboards at my site and stop to examine my painting. They depart with an appreciating remark: ‘Cool.’

“I like connecting with people. I like my art being a means to do that.”

Certainly Nikki’s sentiments are shared by many other artists of her genre, including those exhibiting with her in this inspiring show at the Harrington Gallery: Ray Jackson, Judy Molyneux, Bill Rushton, Randall Sexton, Jerrold Turner and other accomplished artists. Works by the late Pam Glover, who passed away recently, will also be displayed.

Into this sixties melting pot of music, sexual freedom, creative expression, and politics comes the wild and beloved story of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Roxie Hart rocks Chicago in this razzle dazzle musical about the Prohibition era, when criminals were elevated to celebrity status and women, money and murder were always a part of the mix. Directed and choreographed in the true Bob Fosse style by former Broadway actor Lois Grandi, this sizzling yet humorous, heartwarming show will wrap up your summer in true delight at the Firehouse.

With a vision to bring a top quality resident professional theatre company to the Tri-Valley, David Judson and Pat Parr established Pacific Coast Repertory Theatre in 2009. The company casts both professional actors and the best community actors available and supports them with a production staff that works closely with student apprentices to help train the next generation of theatre professionals. PCRT charmed Firehouse audiences with a riveting Cabaret last January and will return next season with Thoroughly Modern Millie and The Last Five Years.

The original Broadway production of Chicago opened June 3, 1975, at the 46th Street Theatre and ran for 936 performances. Bob Fosse choreographed the original production, and his style is strongly identified with the show. Chicago’s 1996 Broadway revival holds the record for the longest-running musical revival on Broadway and is its fifth longest-running show. As of April 2011, it has played for more than 5,900 performances. The musical was produced in London’s West End and on several tours and international productions.

ABOUT THE GROUPThe Outsiders is a group of six accomplished Bay Area plein air painters. The name of this group, formed in the late 1990s, reflects both the type of painting they do — in the outdoors or plein air — and also their trend toward less traditional landscapes. The current members who will be participating in the exhibit are: Nikki Basch-Davis, Ray Jackson, Judy Molyneux, Bill Rushton, Randall Sexton, and Jerry Turner. Pam Glover, a beloved founding member, passed away last year, but some of her fine work will be included on loan from a private collection. During the 1970s, Pam painted with Louis Siegriest (1899-1989), who was one of California’s great painters. As a young man, he joined a painting group known as the “Society of Six,” active in the early part of the last century. The group as a whole rebelled against the somber tones prevalent in earlier California art, preferring the palette of the French Fauvists. Like the Six, the Outsiders often paint together for camaraderie and feedback while they rapidly capture in bright hues rural scenes, funky towns, rusted old cars, and industrial complexes. Then they return to the studio in many cases to put the final touches on their artwork. Their variety in style and technique, and their sometimes unorthodox approach, makes for a uniquely interesting exhibit.

FEATURED ARTISTSNikki Basch-DavisNikki began her art studies in Bezalel Art Institute in Jerusalem and continued in London at the Royal College of Art. During the ’70s she studied with Lundy Siegriest, son of Louis Siegriest from the Society of Six. Says Nikki: “Plein air painting can be intoxication. I am outdoors, alone with a fresh canvas and a scene and the feeling that something magical is about to happen…”

Ray Jackson

Ray’s impasto paintings are colorful and energetic. He has exhibited at Hearst Art Gallery at St. Mary’s College, the Nancy Dodds Gallery in Carmel, and the Bolinas and Bakersfield Museums.

“Bridge View” by Nikki Basch-Davis

Page 21: Firehouse Arts Center - July/Aug 2011

FIREHOUSE ARTS CENTER: July - August 2011 21

Judy Molyneux Judy’s work is intense and abstract with vibrating, complementary colors heavily laid in on the canvas — one feels the necessity to stand back in order to simply absorb it. She lives and works in Bolinas, where, in her words, “It wasn’t until I moved to Bolinas and was struck dumb by the beauty of the light and the movement of the fog that I began to paint the earth again.”

Bill Rushton Bill Rushton began his art career creating large environmental sculptures in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In the 1980s he shifted his focus toward painting, specifically photo-realism. Then he saw the work of Jerrold Turner, who had also painted with Lundy Siegriest, and he shed the restraints of photo-realism, launching into plein air painting. He painted with friends who eventually formed the Outsiders Group. Today his paintings often include figures and have a strong sense of narrative. Bill was recently invited to jury the Harrington Gallery’s first Open Exhibit, “Fresh Works.”

Randall Sexton According to Jean Stearn, Executive Director of the Irvine Museum of Art, Randall is “one of the premier contemporary California landscape painters, (who) also paints still-lifes, figures, and portraits with equal mastery…His work evokes deep feelings, whether it’s the solitude of a deserted street at night or the exultation of a beautiful landscape, each speaks softly to the viewer.”

Jerry Turner

Jerry Turner is very influential in the arts of the San Francisco Bay Area. He teaches plein air painting privately as well as in workshops in Benicia and Walnut Creek, and Virginia City, Nevada. His work can be viewed at the Richard Kerwin Gallery in Burlingame, Lion’s Head Gallery in Carmel, and Gallery 621 in Benicia.
