Station Gossip by Sheryl Drost

Hey Megan, Morrison wants to know if you want a Big Mac with your test strips?Happy 3rd birthday to Olivia Harwood on Aug. 3. I fi gured I owed her daddy Justin this one after I listed her as Olzuza on his new fi refi ghter bio.Welcome back fi refi ghter Mike Sherbon! Mike has been released by his doctor and is excited to get back running!Seems the sewer backed up in the men’s bathroom the other day and Ken Boris and Mike Helland needed their SCBAs to get the cleanup done...Firefi ghters had to wear their helmets during a recent tour and it sure made for some interesting pictures. The dept. is revamping the pictures boards and I had to take a couple personnel so we had everyone. Now most people will ask me to maybe remove a blemish or fi x a stray hair, but Marcia jokingly asked if she could make her look more like Faith Hill. Well....How’d I do?

From the Chief’s DeskBy Fire Chief Don Shoevlin

It’s hard to believe, but where has the summer gone? Before we know it school will be starting. Please remember to drive safely as our children will be on their way to school whether it is walking, waiting for the bus, or driving. Remember, children’s actions are unpredictable.

The request for our services continues to grow. Our fi refi ghters are doing a great job of meeting those requests as well as spending well-deserved time with their families and friends. We are accepting applications for volunteer fi refi ghters. Our next class will begin in January; however we have an informational meeting in December. Just stop by Station One on Main Street in Roscoe to pick up an application. You will be surprised how much fun you can have as well as joining a wonderful group of individuals.

Summer and early fall also brings with it many community events. We just fi nished with Roscoe Community Days and National Night Out. The second weekend of September, we will be at the annual Fall Festival at Leland Park.

This is a special year as we all know; it is the 10th anniversary of the tragic 911 incident. The annual Fall Festival Parade falls on this date. The Roscoe Lions Club has informed me that we will be leading off the parade and we are honored to be given this opportunity. Last year the Trustees approved a fi refi ghter memorial to be constructed in front of the station’s headquarters. We have started that and it is only fi tting to dedicate the memorial on 9/11 prior to the parade. We will have a small ceremony in front of the station at 10544 Main St. at 9:30a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend, we will have coffee, juice, and donuts at the station for everyone prior to the parade.

Remember to check out our website www.harlemroscoefi re.com to keep up with the progress of the department, individuals and calls we have had. As always don’t hesitate to contact me or stop by if I can be of any assistance.

Fitness CommitteeBy Lt. Ryan Alms

Starting last February, all Harlem-Roscoe members were given the opportunity to join Anytime Fitness. The members of the department received a fi tness evaluation by the staff of Anytime Fitness, so members can track their progress.

I feel we had a great turn out by the department; we had just about 50 members show up for an evaluation and they ranged from the newest fi refi ghter all the way to the chief. As of this month, we have 47 members actively participating with the fi tness program. Hopefully, in the near future, we can get 100 % participation in the program.

The department has formed a Fitness Committee, which has seven members from all three stations. Station One committee members are Matt Bush, Mike Morrison and Mark Soppe. Station Two members are Lt. Ryan Alms (whom oversees the committee), Shannon Burbach and Mike Helland. Station Three member is Steve Shoevlin.

Our fi rst task as a committee was to create a fi tness guideline. DC John Bergeron is overseeing the whole fi tness program. If anyone has any questions or concerns feel free to ask any of the committee members.

Firefi ghters Save HomePhotos by Sheryl Drost

Firefi ghters saved a home from what could have been extensive fi re damage on July 13 on Cincinnati Dr. It seems a fi re had started in a bucket of bottle caps and cigarette butts. After melting the plastic bucket, the fi re traveled through the mulch and into the exterior wall of the home.

After learning the family was safely outside, fi refi ghters quickly located the fi re and overhauled the exterior wall to reach all the fi re extension; they were able to keep the fi re from reaching the attic and inside contents. The home had fi lled with smoke, but four family pet cats were found unhurt.

Firefi ghters quickly had the fi re under control.

Another severe storm took aim on the area on July 11 with high winds, rain and lightning doing damage throughout the area.
