From the Rectory

Helena and Colin have recorded anon-line service each Sunday.

It is available on theChurch website (see below)

If we were to play a word associationgame and I said ‘church’ to you, youmight perhaps reply ‘pew’ or ‘service’.Of course, it might be somethingentirely different but we won’t go there! We think of church as a building, usually but not always ancient, and ofthe worship that takes place there. Forsome, that might be limited to weddingsand funerals. But in reality, church is thepeople of God, so although ourbuildings have been closed for worshipfor some time the church itself cannotbe closed and is still very much activeand alive in the community. All of uswho call ourselves Christians are thechurch and we take it with us.As I write this brief article there is hopeon the horizon of the easing of thelockdown and we will very shortly beable to open our church buildings onceagain, but just for private prayer. This initself presents quite a challenge toensure we have everything in place tokeep our visitors safe.Although, as I’ve mentioned, the churchare the people, these sacred buildingsare very important to us for they areplaces where so many prayers havebeen said down the centuries it almostfeels they have seeped into thestonework. They are also the placeswhere we reserve the holy sacrament, the bread and wine consecrated at HolyCommunion in memory of our Lord’ssacrifice for us on the cross. Many ofour visitors remark on the sense ofpeace they find there. So, we rejoice atbeing able to open our church buildingsonce again and share that peace. It hasbeen particularly sad that we have not

been able to hold funerals in ourchurches. We will however be holdingmemorial services for those who wouldhave liked a church funeral for theirloved ones once the restrictions arelifted.During this time of lockdown our way ofbeing church has quite radicallychanged. We have quite a large team ofpeople phoning around to offer supportand have a natter, in place of our visits. Our services are recorded withcontributions from the congregation andcommunity and are posted on ourwebsite and Facebook. We also havean evening Zoom service at 8pm onSunday. This is usually but not alwaysCompline and is now attracting quite afollowing. Last Sunday we had a recordsixteen join us for a time of sharedprayer, whereas before the lockdownwe did not have an evening service atall. I have a feeling that once we areallowed to hold services in church onceagain this might be there to stay. Iwould expect that we will continue touse our on-line presence for worshipand outreach. God always brings goodout of every situation no matter how direand what looks like dying insteadbecome a means to new life andgrowth. May the Lord watch over yourcoming and going both now andevermore.Colin

After our meeting on the 18th June2020 the Sheep Fair Committeeregret to announce, with heavyhearts, that we have cancelled thisyears’ Findon Sheep Fair planned forthe 12th and 13th September 2020.The tradition of the show, over 200years old, has made this a difficultdecision to make, but the right one.Only once before, during the 2001Foot & Mouth epidemic, has it beennecessary to cancel the Show. The safety and welfare of our visitors, volunteers, exhibitors, staff, andtraders have been at the forefront ofthis decision as has that of theresidents of Findon Village itself. Withthe requirements of social distancingmeasures, whatever they become, &the uncertainty regarding massgatherings we felt it was impossible tosafely hold a show of the samequality and standard that members ofthe community know and love.We take this opportunity to thank allwithin the NHS, those key workersand many unspoken heroes whocontinue to work incredibly hard tohelp the country to tackle COVID-19.We must help them as much as wecan, ensuring we are not causingeven more of a strain on all services. To all of our stall holders, farmers, judges, suppliers and contractors;Thank You for your support andunderstanding throughout this last 3months. One of our committeemembers will contact you via eMail or‘phone to discuss the outcome of this

decision. Please bear with us, thismay take a week or so.On behalf of the Committee, wewould like to thank you all for thesupport you have given us over theyears. We are incredibly grateful toour supporters and volunteers, without whom the show would nottake place. Preparations are now inplace for 2021 and on behalf ofeveryone at the Show, dancing sheepand all, we look forward to welcomingyou then.Together, we will get through thesedifficult times – keep safe and takecare.Best wishes,Simon Stace, Chairman, FindonSheep Fair.“What was needed was not bravery, but circumspection.”H.G. The start of gardening.

At the tender age of sixteen I’d passedthe requisite ‘O’ levels and beenaccepted as a ‘Deck Apprentice’ inBritish Petroleum’s’ tanker fleet, knownto the world as BTC (British Tanker Co)but known to employees a ‘Better TimesComing’! The first four months of mynew career was spent rowing whalersaround East India Docks, learning howto splice rope and tie knots together withthe odd bout in a boxing ring to ‘buildcharacter’.Then back home for Christmas 1957and finally the orders to join my firstship, the aptly named ‘British Hero’ inFalmouth in the first week in January.Such was my luck that the day before Ihad a raging toothache, solved by anextraction some 4 hours before catchingthe overnight train from Paddington toFalmouth. Arriving there around 6.30 inthe morning, my brand-new uniformbloodied already! Fortunately, I wasbefriended by another Apprentice whowas on his third trip and therefore Iconsidered him to be an old salt, hetook me for a memorable cookedbreakfast at a local B&B. I should pointout that on smart, posh passenger shipsthe likes of us were known as ‘Cadets’but we had to make do with the lowlytitle of Apprentices. BP believed, andrightly that as you rose the ranks toCaptain you should never expectanyone to do a job that you hadn’tyourself done. This involved scrubbing, cleaning brass, painting, working overthe side when sailing down the RedSea, unblocking toilets, working 12 hourshifts on and off in port loading anddischarging cargo and even changingnavigation lights at the top of a 100 footmast in the middle of the night with the

ship rolling 10 degrees in eitherdirection. This instilled in me the oldsaying “one hand for the ship and onefor yourself”!For all this blood sweat and tears BPagreed to pay me the princely sum of£615 over the 4 years (first year £110rising to £190 in the fourth) and an extra£30 if one survived the full 4 years!Added to this was 12 shillings (60p) ayear as a washing allowance (to buysoap with).Having met my fellow Apprentices, found our cabin, I got the top bunk! Wewere told that the ships orders were offto the Isle of Grain, BP’s oil refinery onthe Medway to load a full cargo of fueloil and then not to some exotic port inthe Mediterranean or possibly SouthAmerica, but we were bound for Tromsoinside the Arctic circle in Januarycomplete with an ice breaker to keep uscompany! No warm weather shorts orshirts but duffle coats and two pairs ofsocks became mandatory! All that was many, many years ago anda lot of water has flowed under the keelsince then. I went on to complete myfour years, duly become 4th, 3rd and 2nd

officer, obtained my Masters Certificate, got engaged, got married and westarted a family at which time I hadenough of trips of 8 or 10 months awayat a time, enough of working everysingle day on board for a minimum of 10and more often 12 hours a day. So, in1968 I started with Rolls Royce ascomputer programmer, living in Derby, going home at night and enjoying beinga family and became a gardener in myspare time!Chris Young

ThanksTo my fellow villagers,a very big thank you for themany cards, letters andphone calls on the death ofmy husband Jim Bartlettafter a long illness. How lucky are we to live herein this lovely place.Jan Bartlett

You held me close and said" I will love you forever,I will take you home andwe will be together, your eyes are so bright, your fur is so fluffy, your ears are so long andyour tail is so puffy"You took me home andyou loved me so much, then a few years onas I lay in my hutch,I waited for someone toclean out my bed,but nobody came, just left me instead.I shivered and shookas rain fell from above,is this that great thingthat mummy called love?My food bowl is empty,

no water to drink,You have moved on andjust left me, I think!Nobody wants me,I am trapped in this box,Would they care if I leftin the jaws of a fox? They no longer want me,it was not meant to be."I will love you forever"meant nothing, you see!My eyes are so lifeless,a smile I pretend,Is my life over, could this be the end?But this is not cute andit sure is not funny, its cruel and its heartless."Where is my mummy!! Our little horse Elvis had five weeks ofacupuncture but showed noimprovement. The Vets advised us tohave a plate put in his shoulder. He hadthe operation, a plate with two screws tohold the plate in position. The Vet rangto say he would not stop biting thebandage off and has had to have moresurgery to have the stitches put back inagain, and has now got an infection. Itwas to have cost £1,500 but now hasgone up to £4,879.18. He has to stayanother week so that will cost evenmore!

I like to come in and watch The ChaseQuiz every day on TV. A soon as I satdown with a cup of tea the dogs startingbarking. I got up and went to see why. When I went into the Conservatory therewas a strange chicken sitting verycomfortably on the settee. Somebodymust have put it in the back gate. She isstill here. I went into the stable recentlyand found a hen this time. I knew whoshe belonged to as I recognised her asone I had given to our neighbours. Shehad escaped into the farmers field andthen into the field at the back ofNightingales where there is a horse. The man found the hen when feedinghis horse and put her over the fence

thinking she was one of mine. She wasvery lucky because we have a fox that isoften about in both fields. Our little hen Lola has died, she wasbest friends with Benjamin our Rabbit.Poor Benjamin is missing her. He goesand sits with the other hens who peckhim. He turns round as if to say " Whatdid you do that for? "

I have too many fish in the pond. Theybreed every year. I try to give someaway every year, so please get it touchif you would like some goldfish.Stacey

Findon Village Store NewsJo O’Dell Volunteer/Committee Member

Since the shop opened 3 years agostorage has been an ongoing problem. We have worked extremely hard toprovide product lines to suit the needsof villagers but this has been hamperedby the lack of adequate storagefacilities. We have now had acommercial cold room installed at therear of the shop, rather than relying onprevious domestic fridges that weren’t fitfor purpose. This provides significantadditional storage capacity for chilledand chiller displayed goods (e.g. softdrinks) and will free up significant spaceelsewhere. It will enable us to keepmore stock and It will also enable us toslightly increase our chilled productsrange as we won't need everything outin the shop at once as we often do now.

We have been supporting the FindonGarden Centre until they recently re-opened, enabling sales on their behalfin excess of £2,000 during May.Alongside their goods we havecontinued to sell our own, sourced byand looked after by Becky Fagan whowill now return to being the sole providerof these going forward. We are happy to

have been able to help FGC survive avery difficult time for them in our ownsmall way.

We have decided to overhaul ourgreetings cards, partly driven by ourprimary supplier changing theiroperating model to our disadvantageand partly because we felt our rangewas too limited to appeal to the broadspectrum of tastes using the shop. Thenew card selection is excellent andhopefully we will be the shop of choicefor local customers looking for cards!Having made a significant investment inthe business to meet the needs of thecommunity at large and going some wayto future proofing our ability to do so, wesincerely hope that the communityresponds positively to this and post-covid continues to use the store asmuch as it has during the past fewmonths. I am sure that many who havenot typically used the shop before willhave been impressed with theexperience of doing so, both from anincredible product range and customerexperience perspective.

Villagers will recall the formation ofUpdated Findon NeighbourhoodDevelopment Plan Working Group(UFNDPWG) and its mission toassess the view of villagers towardthose two housing allocation sitessubmitted by South Downs NationalPark Authority (SDNPA) with respectto new house building in Findon.

Those sites proposed, namely land atElm Rise and Soldier's Field Housewere ranked alongside a number ofother proposed sites, both scoringpoorly as voted by the village. In fact, the two sites proposed by SDNPAwere ranked lowest by a significantfactor in the vote held via anextensive polling exercise undertakenby UFNDPWG.

As a result of these findingsUFNDPWG embarked upon a lengthyexercise to establish criteria for thosehighly ranked sites favoured byvillagers, in effect creating a FindonPlan favoured by the village.

These alternative sites met thecriterion of 32 houses within thevillage that needed to be met bySDNPA and were duly submitted asan Updated Findon NeighbourhoodPlan to the Planning Inspector. TheInspector noted that whilst these sitesmet most of the planning criteria, thepresence of an existing South DownsLocal Plan (namely the land at ElmRise and Soldier's Field House sitessubmitted by SDNPA ) meant that hecould not recommend our Plan, unless SDNPA withdrew the twoallocations from its Plan.

Findon Parish Council (FPC) hassought legal advice on this point andthis has been clear that unlessSDNPA withdraw the two allocationsfrom its Plan (and they are adamantthey will not ) there is a very real riskthat pursuing the Findon residentsfavoured site allocations could lead toboth being enacted. A situation thatcould lead to an extra 60 plus homesin Findon.

It is therefore with a heavy heart thatFPC, as the ‘qualifying body’ willwithdraw its housing allocationsubmission and leave the SouthDowns Plan as the only one toprogress. This is clearly not the wishof Findon village but it would appeardespite the concept of Localism as aguiding principle for SDNPA this is notdeemed sufficiently important by themto withdraw their Local Plan.

FPC would like to extend its thanksthose hard working members ofUFNDPWG. Their efforts have beensignificant during this and the originalNeighbourhood Development Planprocess and deserve a betteroutcome.

FPC will now close down theUFNDPWG and FPC will naturallycontinue to communicate relevantprogress to the village.

Big Fleas. NormanAllcorn. As I write this the fate of Findon Fair 2020 hangs in the balance. A decision isexpected at the start of July. There have been a fairs in Findon as far back as1261 but ---”George Holford started the Sheep Fair proper on Nepcote Greensometime before 1785. In 1940 the fair was moved by order of the War Office. Itwas transported by the traction engines of the Harris Fun-Fair to West Grinstead. The Harris family are still attending the fair today.” (If these words seem familiar itis because they have been used in the Sheep Fair programme ever since I wrotethem over 20 years ago.)Even Hitler did not stop the fair but it was cancelled in 2001 due to a virus. Footand Mouth disease had broken out in pigs in Northumbria and had spread viacattle markets through the North, Wales and into the South-West. The nearest itcame to Sussex was an outbreak in north-west Kent. This stopped all cattlemovements. Footpaths were closed and people told to stay out of the countryside. On the second Saturday in September of that year some members of the Harrisfamily and a few villagers met at the corner of Nepcote Green. A symbolic plankwas laid on the ground. A young Harris grandson said, “I declare this fair open.”A few moments later he said. “I declare this fair closed.”Since then the fair has gone from strength to strength. It seems ironic that it couldbe once again stopped by a virus. How is it that we can put a man on the moonbut can be brought to our knees by a tiny invisible enemy. Not an exact analogybut it reminds me of the old poem.

Big fleas have little fleasUpon their backs to bite ‘emThese fleas have lesser fleasAnd so ad infinitum.

If only we could find a flea to bite the corona virus !

STONE AGE MANFOUND AT FINDON

Walking on the ancient way betweenCissbury and Chanctonbury the otherday, I nearly trod on a Stone Age manlying on the path. He was petrified!Having fallen on hard times in thedistant past, he looked down-troddenand a bit worse for wear. I stood him upon the fence, posted as a sentry towatch out for others of his tribe. The next time I went that way, FindonMan had left his post - doubtlesscaptured by another passer-by.Peter Jackson

In 1416 when King Henry V was on thethrone basking in the glory of defeatingthe French at Agincourt the year before, the birth of white storks in the wild inthe UK was the last recorded. That wasuntil this year when chicks werehatched just up the road from Findon atthe Knepp Estate near Dial Post.

This was the result of the White StorkProject which aims to reintroduce a wildstork population to Britain. Three chickswere hatched high up in an oak treeand are being closely monitored by theproject team at Knepp. There isevidence that storks have beenbreeding in the UK for around 360,000years, so the 600 year gap seems like asmall interlude in comparison.

The Knepp Estate has beenundergoing a ‘Wilding’ for 20 years.Originally a farm struggling to survive, the current owners decided to return

the land to a natural habitat toencourage wildlife. As well as storks, there are free roaming Exmoor Ponies,Longhorn Cattle, Deer and TamworthPigs. The habitat has also attractedmany breeds of bird including theNightingale and Turtle Dove (bothdwindling breeds), as well as a largevariety of insects and butterflies.

The Estate is open to the public all yearround, and from the car park a map isavailable detailing a few walks ofvarying distance. I went there myselfrecently and was lucky enough to get aphoto of the storks. Look closely andyou can see one of the chicks poking itshead up from the nest.

Continuing our occasional series from Findon residents aboutwhy they moved to Findon ….Why we Moved to Findon Graham and Hilary LangfordOf all the things we have ever done, moving to Findon in 2006 has been one ofthe best decisions we’ve made. In Findon we found all the elements we werelooking for in a village; a Church, a village hall, a school, at least one shop andone pub and a village green. These we believed comprised the bricks for a strongcommunity and we weren’t wrong, were we!Graham grew up in Coolham, but had moved into Horsham by the time we met,and Hilary had grown up there. We’d always planned to move away and Grahamhankered for the village life he’d known in Coolham when it was a very activevillage with a shop, garage, pub, cobblers, school, chapel and so forth. It wasdifficult however, as both our mothers were widowed, needing support and ourchildren became rooted in their schools and the community and our villagethoughts were, after all, rather vague. The time came when both our children had left home and sadly Graham’s motherhad passed away. It was in our thoughts that we would move to mid Devon as weboth had a Devonian parent. As we were growing up we’d both spent our holidaysvisiting family and felt at home there. We spent time exploring areas between thecoasts with a view that we’d need to be able to drive back to Horsham to pick upHilary’s mother and bring her to our home, all in one day. But, we didn’t findanywhere that felt right and it was clear that it was a long drive for a one dayround trip. We’d always known Findon without ever having explored it but, after one very wetspell when the forest and footpaths round Horsham were waterlogged andsquelchy mud, we drove down to walk on the well drained hills of the Southdownsand stopped in the village for a drink. Looking at the houses for sale in the villagestore window it occurred to us that this would be a very nice place to live.Although our first attempt at purchasing a house fell through, Findon wouldn’tleave us alone and before long we’d found anotherproperty and were moving in.After being here 10 years we did something wenever expected of ourselves – we decided to have adog. We were two very undoggy people but now arethe doting people living with Millie the Cockerpoo. Idon’t feel we’re a couple with a dog but insteadwe’re a family of three. All the family adore her andwe’re all much loved in return.Although Findon in its Downland setting is only ashort distance from Horsham, built on the clay andHorsham stone of the Weald, it is very different, almost like being in a different county and we’veenjoyed our life here and our family love to visit.

Onplanning, it is to be noted that the recenthearing to redevelop and add newhousing to Soldier's Field Stables wasagreed by South Downs National ParkAuthority at its remote meeting held on11 June 2020. Cllr Cathrine Gear,Chairman, FPC Planning Committee, spoke on behalf of the Council inobjection to the application.Gardening services including swiftlytaking down a damaged and dangeroustree on Pond Green continued and it isgood to see the Open SpacesVolunteers Working Group recommence

their work across the village in smallersocially distanced groups and adheringto COVID 19 rules.Social distancing is a large part of ourlife in these times and it is reassuring toobserve people crossing the road toensure such distance but it is alsointeresting to feel how much more socialpeople are, friendly chat or waves arethe norm now and continue to mark thereal village feel that exists in Findon. Many thanks are due to Findon WI who,in the light of government guidelines, volunteered to make face masks forthose who don't have them within thevillage and have now helped numerousvillagers to access in a safe manner thewider community.FPC has had several commentsregarding both speeding and parking inthe village and before the lockdown theCouncil agreed to form a WorkingGroup to examine both, including bothcouncillors and non-councillors.
