Parents of Students in K-3:Important Information About Signing Up for Parent Conferences Online

Using SignUpGenius

Parents of students in grades K-3: watch your in-box for an email with the link to SignUpGenius that was sent on Friday, January 20. We are using this online provider for you to schedule your February Parent/Teacher Conferences. After clicking on the link, simply scroll down to the name of your child’s teacher (be sure to scroll down until you see the name of your child’s teacher as in the past some parents have inadvertently scheduled with the wrong teacher), click on an available time slot that works for you, and complete the information requested. A few reminders: 1. Please just sign up for one timeslot per child. 2. If you have several children, your best chance of getting back-to-back conferences is to sign up as soon as you receive the link while more slots are available. 3. Parents do not have to create a SignUpGenius account. While visitors will be given an option of creating a free account with SignUpGenius, parents are not required to create an account on the site in order to sign up for conferences. 4. SignUpGenius does not sell or distribute emails or contact information. You will also not receive emails from SignUpGenius, with the exception of possible reminder emails about your scheduled conference. 5. If you do not have access to a computer, or if you have difficulty signing up for a conference online, please contact Tara Dowd at [email protected] or (360)293-4078and I will assist you. 6. Thank you for understanding that the early release days only provide enough time for one conference per child, making it difficult to accommodate requests for separate conferences in divorce situations. 7. Please arrive for your conference a few minute early.

Parent Conferences for Grades 4, 5, and 6 Due to departmentalization at the intermediate grades, we will have "arena" style goal-setting conferences at the 4, 5, and 6th grades so that parents are able to meet with all of their child’s teachers. Arena conferences are not individually scheduled. The 5th grade conferences will be held in the library. The 4th and 6th grade conferences will be held in the teacher’s classroom Parents are encouraged to bring their child to participate in the conference. Parents wait in line to see a teacher, then proceed to see the next teacher. Please limit your conversations to 7-10 minutes per teacher as each teacher has 55 to 75 students to conference about. If you need more time with any teacher, ask if you can schedule a follow-up conference at a later date. To prevent any one session from being too crowded, in general we ask that parents attend at the following times (if the suggested day does not work for your schedule, feel free to come on one of the alternative days): If your child's last name starts with A-G - attend on Tues., Feb. 14, 12:25 to 3:00 pm If your child's last name starts with H-O - attend on Wed., Feb. 15, 12:25 to 3:00 pm If your child’s last name starts with P-Z - attend on Thurs, Feb. 16, 12:25 to 3:00 pm Because our evening conference session is limited to one evening, we ask that this time be reserved only for one parent working families who cannot attend during the day, or for those families where it is not possible for either one or the other parent to attend during the day. Our evening conference session is Wednesday, Feb. 15 from 4:30-7:30 p.m.

Looking for Volunteers to Help Young Authors Edit Their Writing Adult editors are needed on Wednesdays from 2:45 to 4:00 to help students who are participating in Young Authors to edit their writing during writing workshop sessions. Volunteers will be working with students who enjoy writing and signed up to share their work at the Young Authors Conference, an annual celebration of young authors held every spring at Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon. The writing workshops will meet Wednesdays after school from February 1 through March 15 (there is no workshop

on February 15 due to early release). We will meet in the school library and volunteers should park in the south parking lot where the big school bell is in order to sign in at the front desk. Adult editors will be helping students with the following: creating a story map, rough draft editing, editing and sharing stories, creating illustrations and helping with the final illustrated manuscripts. This is a very rewarding and short-term volunteer opportunity for adults who have an interest in promoting writing in students. For more information or to sign up as an editor, please contact Laura Spehar at [email protected].

Missoula Children’s Theatre Auditions: February 6, 2017 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Missoula Children’s Theatre is coming to Fidalgo the week of February 6-10, 2017. Missoula Theatre brings two professional actors/directors to Fidalgo, and on the evening of Friday, February 10, after just one week of rehearsals, students will present a full-length original musical production of Gulliver’s Travels. Auditions for Fidalgo students in grades K-6 are Monday, February 6, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Approximately 50 to 60 students will be cast in the show. (Depending on the number of students who audition, there might not be enough roles for all students. However, students who audition but are not selected for the cast will be invited to participate in a special drama workshop during the school day.) If your child would like to audition for Gulliver’s Travels, please complete the permission slip below. A rehearsal immediately follows auditions from 5:30-7:30 p.m. for those chosen for key roles in the cast. On Tuesday through Thursday rehearsals are 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. with a half hour dinner break in between. Not all cast members will attend all sessions, but some will. There will be a performance during the school day on Friday for the students, and a Friday evening performance for parents and other guests.

Show Synopsis – Gulliver’s Travels

Conceived, written, music and lyrics by Michael McGill

With his ship wrecked and his trusty computer JCN on the fritz, brave explorer Gulliver finds himself lost in space with nothing but an Invisible Force to guide him! While transporting from world to world, under the control of the Maniacal Scientist of Lapunta, Gulliver discovers fighting aliens, arrogant Horse Leaders of the foolish Yahoos, largerthan-life royalty (in more ways than one) and robots – all who need just as much help from Gulliver as Gulliver needs from them! Tune in as this sci-fi spin of the timeless tale of GULLIVER’S TRAVELS will take you out-of-this world!

On Monday, they’re cast as characters… By Friday, they’ve gained character.

My child has permission to stay after school to audition for the Missoula Children’s Theatre on Monday, February 6. (Please send them with a snack). I will pick my child up by 5:00 p.m.

I understand that if selected for the cast or crew, my child needs to be available to attend the rehearsals and performances shown below. Parents need to provide transportation home after rehearsals and performances. Collect Box Tops for Fidalgo Kids- Beth Rittel

Please continue to collect Box Tops. They do expire, so turn them in as often as possible. Our goal this school year is to earn over $1,500 and with everyone’s help we can do it. You can help us reach that goal by sending in your Box Tops each month. Drop box tops off in the Box Tops bin located across the hall from the library. Here are some optional tips that will make the submission process easier:* Put your teacher’s name on the bag so your child’s class gets credit for the ice cream party* Bundle your Box Tops in groups of 10 or 50 using a sealable bag or envelope* Tape or glue Box Tops on a collection sheet, available at BTFE.com Our school receives a check from Box Tops for Education for box tops submitted, which we use to purchase items for the school, such as playground equipment. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, Beth Rittel, at [email protected] . Thanks for your help!

Important Personal Safety Tips for Parents and Students: “No! – Go – Yell - Tell!”- Especially given these dark winter months, wait with your child at the bus stop in the morning, and

in the afternoon when they return. - Teach your children that adults should not approach them for help, directions, etc. Tell your

children to trust their instincts, and if they are approached by an adult, they should stay alert because this may be a “trick.” It’s OK to say, “NO!” One way to teach this is: No! – Go – Yell - Tell!

- Children should know to never go anywhere with anyone without your permission first. - Don’t drop your child off alone at parks, malls, video arcades, etc. - Teach the buddy/buddies system – there is safety in numbers- Point out safe places that they can go if they feel unsafe, such as a trusted neighbor- Use caution with the term, “Stranger danger,” – Sadly, perpetrators can be adults known to the child - Know where your child is at all times – there is no substitute for your attention and supervision

Rachel’s Closet Fund at Fidalgo Fidalgo has a “Rachel’s Closet Fund” for students who are in need of clothing, other items, and extra-curricular scholarships. The community service clubs and many individuals have provided funding for this resource.  The items are new or barely used and if there is an item needed that we do not have, we are able to purchase it with donated funds. Please contact school counselor Courtney Miner ([email protected]) if you would like to obtain clothing from Rachel’s Closet for your child.

Community Bulletin Board: Your Source for Opportunities in the Community for Your Family Each week the Anacortes School District shares information from our community partners on our website.  This is the place to find and post non-school related community events and information that benefits students and families. All notices are submitted by outside organizations to keep your family informed. The Anacortes School District does not endorse or sponsor these activities. Please visit our Community Bulletin Board to see new postings for this week: http://www.asd103.org/for_community/community_bulletin_board

Quick Tip Quick Tip is a system that allows students, parents, staff, and community members to submit information to school administrators anonymously. While the district already has many programs to help students deal with challenges such as bullying behaviors, stress, peer pressure, and family problems, Quick Tip helps break the code of silence often experienced by students and others because it allows them to report concerns to administrators anonymously. The Quick Tip system is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at https://asp.schoolmessenger.com/anacortes/quicktip/.  Submitters may log on to Quick Tip from any computer with internet access or mobile app and have the ability, on or off campus, to create positive connections with administrators by addressing topics of concern. School administrators will respond to messages during the regular school day (7:00 AM-3 PM). Messages sent during non-school hours will be responded to, in most cases, the next school day.  It's helpful to share specific information such as a detailed description of the concern or incident, names and grade levels of those involved, location of concern, names of any potential witnesses, and any supporting evidence. It's important that reporters submit thorough and accurate information; false reporting is subject to disciplinary action.Quick Tip is available to the Anacortes School District students, parents, staff, and community members.  Parents and other adults wishing to express a concern or share information are still encouraged to continue doing so by calling our schools directly and speaking with the appropriate personnel.  It is our hope that Quick Tip will provide a form of support that will result in us hosting the best possible learning environment for our students.IMPORTANT NOTE: This is not a crisis line. In cases of emergency, the site will direct students to call 911!
