I’m glad to see that so many manatees were in-

terested in the election and endorsement of our

future leaders! It feels just like yesterday I was up

in front of the division presenting my own con-

by so fast :( I am thankful for all that I have

learned since then though, and I’ll save the

speech for banquet hehe… until then, a big

congratulations to my successor Manuel Santi-

ago!! It’s not the end yet, guys! I still have my

Meet Your.....

Official JET Division Newsletter February Issue Page 2

Hello everyone ,my name is Sin-

gle— I mean Brandon, and it's

nice to meet you all. I am a

junior at Fountain Valley High

School. I've been in KIWIN'S for

three years now and I am still

amazed at how awesome

KIWIN'S is. I am super excited to

be on the Jet Spirit Committee

and help lead our division in

winning the spirit stick. See you

guys at DCON!

My name is Tien Nguyen and I

am the 2013-2014 FV KIWIN'S

Treasurer. I am a senior who

loves Youtube and long walks

on the beach. I don't really like

cheese except on anything

with cheese on it. Anyways, I

have been in KIWIN'S for 3

years now, and this year has

been my favorite so far! I am so

happy to be a part of the first

ever Jet Spirit Committee and I

hope to leave behind an awe-

some legacy. I want this year's

DCON to be the best it’s ever

been, with awards and spirit

and friendship.

Hullo! I'm Helene Vo and I'm a

senior at La Quinta High

School. My life basically re-

volves around cosmetology

and social networks. I really like

koala tea puns. Anywhozies,

I've been in KIWIN'S for about

three years and it's dolphi-

nately been the best decision

I've made in my high school

career. I'm super eggcited to

be in Jet's spirit committee be-

cause I've never been able to

serve on a board. I'm ready to

help make my last DCON the

best one yet!

Hi I'm Kathy Le and I'm the cur-

rent Spirit Chair of Fountain

Valley KIWIN'S. I'm a sopho-

more who is devoted to this

club. I want to be in this com-

mittee to help guide Jet to

higher heights and learn to be

a stronger leader. I also think it's

time to take back that spirit

stick!!

Page 3: February Jet Jargon: KIWIN'S Newsletter

We’ve got spirit, yes we do! We’ve got spirit, how ‘bout you?

Spirit Committee!

Hi, I'm Kevin Nguyen, and I'm a

junior at Fountain Valley. I love

penguins, and I hate elevators.

So yeah.. KIWIN'S has always

been a big part of my life since

I started to go to events during

freshman summer before I was

even in the club. Now I want to

be in the spirit committee to be

a part of something in KIWIN'S

so when I try out for board, I'll

have some sense of responsibil-

ity before I take on a bigger

position. This will also be my first

and second to last DCON I will

be able to go to, so I want to

try and make it the best.

Hi everyone, I’m Emily Phan. I

am the secretary of OCSA

KIWIN’s and so incredibly hon-

ored to be a part of the Jet

Spirit Committee! I am an

eccentric and highly-engaged

individual who loves turning shy

people into super pumped

manatees and getting them to

participate in all of the activi-

ties as we do. Let’s win that

spirit stick, guys!

Hello Ladietees and Manatees!

It's your friendly neighborhood

Spiderman!... Nah, it's just

me,Daniel Luong from Jet Divi-

sion of La Quinta. I'm a senior , I

love playing and collecting Yu-

gi-oh cards, pumping some

iron, singing and drinking wa-

ter... lots of water... water is

good... I like water... cold wa-

ter is good water. LOL Anyway!

I'm on the Jet Spirit Committee

to encourage others to cheer,

pump your spirits up for our oh

soo loud division, get creative

with our cheers, improve Jet's

unity to let out our inner roar

and of course, win the spirit

stick! I hope to see ya'll at D-

CON. It's not everyday you get

to yell. It's very soothing~

Sup. My name is Matthew

Pham and I am currently

Segerstrom’s 2013-2014 Celes-

tial Spirit Mage. What do I do

you may ask? I just spread

sparkly pixie dusts. I’ve been

active in KIWIN’S for a little

more than 3 years therefore

making me…as you probably

wouldn’t guess or give a single

thought about, a senior. I

joined the “first” Jet Spirit

Squad because why not? I

really do enjoy what KIWIN’S

does for the community and I

want to return the favor to you

guys by making one of the

most memorable years ever.

Wassup in Jet Division! On Saturday the 25th, there was a celebration of life memorial held at FVHS for a beloved past teacher who passed away re-cently. For any old

alumni of our school who might have known him, Mr. Bovberg taught History classes & started the fun tradition of having students reenact time peri-ods, war scenes, etc in class. He stopped teaching at FVHS about 4-5 years ago. FVHS KIWIN'S helped set up for this event by getting chairs out, setting up tables and putting out anything that needs to be taken out. The funeral was later attended by close friends and faculty members in memory of a B4L AB (Baron For Life And Beyond).

-Vi Kim Pham, Fountain Valley KIWIN’S Vice President

On Sunday, January 5th Marina KIWIN’S had the oppor-

tunity to volunteer at

the Discovery Sci-

ence Center. We

helped tear down the

Gingerbread exhibit in

the Center. Duties

included taking down

and sorting through

the decorations around the museum. In addition, we

also assisted with disposing any unwanted gingerbread

houses and storing away tables. This was our first event

of 2014 and it was definitely the best way to start an-

other year of service. It was also very kind of the volun-

teer coordinators to reward members with a pizza din-

ner for their hard work.

-Evelyn Romero, Marina KIWIN’S Vice President

Oh, yes indeed, it is this time of

the year again. No, not Super

Bowl Sunday. Surf City Sunday.

Volunteering at the Surf City

Marathon, one of the most excit-

ing volunteer events of the year

with tens of thousands of runners

and hundreds of volunteers. Feb-

ruary 2nd, Edison KIWIN’S volun-

teered at this marathon located on

PCH. The main job ofhalf of Edi-

son KIWIN’S was to pass outspe-

cial medals to runners .The rest of

Edison KIWIN’S helped behind the finish line to greet runners

after their exhausting 26.2 mile runs (or 13.2 miles for the half-

marathoners). We passed out thermal blankets to help finishers

keep warm after their runs in the chilly beach weather. Overall,

we could agree that volunteering at the Surf City Marathon was

a moving experience by being able to see the enormous

amounts of dedicated and motivated runners as well as willing

and enthusiastic volunteers.

- Michelle Hwang, Edison KIWIN’S Historian

On the last day of finals, January 31st, members of Segerstrom KI-WIN’S went straight to Bolsa Grande High School to volun-teer at the Tet Festival held there. The festival was actually large in size, even held a week before the main Tet Festival. Volunteers worked from the afternoon until midnight, performing a variety of jobs such as set-up, clean-up, and traffic control. It was the first of three-straight days of volunteering at the Tet Festival, in which Segerstrom is also benefiting from fundraising! Although it was a very tedious event, members had a lot of fun and even called it one of the more memorable events this year!

- Tony Do, Segerstrom KIWIN’S Vice President

Wassup in Jet Division! Ready, set, go! Based on the popular book series, the Hunger

Games, La Quinta KIWIN’S

volunteered at The Hunger

Runs 5k at Mile Square Park

on January 11th, 2014! Volun-

teers checked in at the forest

shelter in Mile Square Park and

received their red, sporty vol-

unteer shirts. Later on, they

received tasks at their designated obstacle course! Some of the

obstacle courses members got to volunteer at were the rock

wall, the ball pit, and the archery station. Other members were

also route coordinators and cheerleaders for those participating

in the race. La Quinta KIWIN’S also volunteered with Los Ami-

gos KIWINS and La Quinta Key Club at the race! After the shift

was over, members helped clean up the premise and went

home to rest after an adventurous morning.

-Jessica Tran, La Quinta KIWIN’S Vice President

Los Amigos KI-WIN’S volunteered at the Fountain Valley Kiwanis Club’s semiannual charity event, Brit-tany’s Closet, at Walmart. Twenty-five under privi-leged children

from Kindergarten through 6th grade were given a $100 budget to shop. Each KIWINNER was paired up with a child and an adult to help the child buy stylish and hip winter clothing. There was a mini competition to see which group could come closest to the $100 budget without going over it. KIWINNERS loved this event and enjoyed bringing smiles to the kids’ faces.

-Katherine Pham, Los Amigos KIWIN’S President

Bowl to Eliminate took place on the evening of Saturday,

January 25th. An annual event held by Fountain Valley KI-

WIN’S every year to help raise money for Project Eliminate. Despite the tickets being on the pricier side, many mem-

bers still went. At around 6:30PM-7PM, members signed

in with the board members, and were able to choose their own lanes with their choice of who was in their group. Members

were able to just let themselves go and enjoy their time at this event. Pizza and drinks were provided, so the members didn’t have to bowl on an empty stomach. Even from a mile away, the loud and happy laughter of the members could be heard. In the end, a lot of money was raised for Project Eliminate while mem-

bers having the time of their lives.

-Angela Nguyen, Fountain Valley KIWIN’S President

On January 18th, 2014, La

Quinta KIWIN’S woke up

bright and early for the New

Year’s Hustle 5K at the OC

Great Park in Irvine! It was a

chilly, foggy morning, which

made it a great day to volun-

teer! Members checked in at

the volunteer booth and were

immediately given tasks.

Some volunteers were cheerleaders at the finish line,

passed out medals to the finished runners, snipped off

the ID running tags, and clean-up/break down of the

event itself. After about four hours, members helped

break down the entire event. Some tasks included fold-

ing tables/chairs, rolling up promotional signs, and car-

rying sandbags to the loading trucks. In the end, mem-

bers went back home to Westminster, happy with bags

of orange thanks to the project coordinators.

-Jessica Tran, La Quinta KIWIN’S Vice President

MANATEES OF THE MONTH: Chris Le

"This person has been an outstanding member of FV KIWIN'S

this month, attending ALL of the events planned out! Chris Le

not only goes to events and participates in the tasks given,

but he also cares for our club. What made Chris stand out is

that he came back to an event at 10pm just to make sure a

member was safe and that she had found her way home!

Even though it wasn't his job to do so, he stepped up to the

plate and did what he could to help out our board. Whether

it was staying our in the Snow Pit for seven hours without

switching out at the Christmas Tree Lighting, or socializing with

people he doesn't know at a Winter Social, Chris was always

up for the job! Chris is an outstanding member that no doubt

deserves this title as the Manatee of the Month.”

MANATEES OF THE MONTH: Vy Vuong

“The person which I have chosen to nominate for Manatee of

the Month not only embodies KIWIN’S spirit and dedication

throughout the month, she has been doing so for the past 4

years of being a member of KIWIN’S. When Vy first joined this

club, she was one of the very few members who attended

every meeting as well as most of the events. She continued to

stay dedicated to this club by attending Fall Rally, car washes,

and many other events and eventually became the Commit-

tee Chair of the club. Although she has recently removed her-

self from board due to personal complications, Vy is still sup-

porting the club by attending the meetings as well as fundrais-

ers. Vy’s spirit and enthusiam for service is highly contagious at

every event, which is why LQ KIWIN’S would like to recognize

her as Manatee of the Month.”

Hours

Guess What?!?

6 out of 7 schools have accumulated more hours this term than they had at

this time a year ago, and the last school is close! Within 10 months, you were

able to surpass the high records you broke last year and prove that you are

all unstoppable when you are determined to keep improving yourselves, no

matter what! I’m a blessed LTG to have been in office during such a great

term, G-DOUBLE O-D-J-O-B, GOOD JOB! GOOD JOB :)

Congratulations to the Jet officers this year for being the first year in a while

where all schools applied for awards!

While organizing awards, I was overwhelmed to see how Jet was

representin’! Good luck at DCON, and I know that whatever happens, all of

you officers have put your clubs in a better position for the future

generations!
