FEBRUARY 24, 2019 THE 7TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 3
From Pastor Fr. George Koeune
We Are Called to Judge Actions
Too many people have forgotten that fraternal correction is a necessity for living out an authentic Christian way of life. We are called to judge the actions of our brothers and sisters. When they are doing something wrong, we are obligated to correct them. We can never judge a brother or sister; that is,
we can never say to them that they are going to heaven or hell (final judgement belongs to Jesus Christ), but, we can judge the actions of a brother or sister. In fact, if we fail to judge whether an action is right or wrong, we could fall into the sin of omission. As a Church, we judge actions all the time. The act of committing an abortion is wrong. Stealing, fornication, murder, adultery, child sexual abuse, racism, and many other acts are wrong! So, yes, we are called to judge. However, we must always remember that it is the sin a person commits that we are judging, not the person. Love the sinner but hate the sin is the old saying we should remember. There are many places in our Church teaching that support the judgment of actions. I am going to include in this article a passage that deals with our responsibility to judge actions. This passage comes from the Book of Ezekiel.
“Thus the word of the Lord came to me: Son of man, I have appointed you a watchman for the house of Israel. When you hear a word from my mouth, you shall warn them for me. “If I say to the wicked man, You shall surely die; and you do not warn him or speak out to dissuade him from his wicked conduct so that he may live; that wicked many shall die for his sin, but I will hold you responsible for his death. If, on the other hand, you have warned the wicked man, yet he has not turned away from his evil nor from his wicked conduct, then he shall die for his sin, but you shall have saved your life. “If a virtuous man turns away from virtue and does wrong when I place a stumbling block before him, he shall die. He shall die for his sin, but I will hold you responsible for his death if you did not warn him. When, on the other hand, you have warned a virtuous man not to sin, and he has in fact not sinned, he shall surely live because of the warning, and you shall save your own life.” (Ezekiel 3:17-21)
We must judge the sin, but not the sinner. Fraternal correction, done properly, is a loving act. We are called to help our brothers and sisters in their quest for sainthood. Sometimes to truly help them we must judge their actions. Yours in Christ, Fr. George

Our Lady of the Lakes' St. Peter Campus Planning Committee
The St. Peter Campus Planning Committee has met 3 times to discuss the existing uses of the school, convent and surrounding property and the associated costs to maintain these facilities for their current uses. Also discussed was what other options for the use of these facilities and property should be investigated. Attendees included parishioners representing both St. Bede's and St. Peter's. Our last meeting was January 31st. Representatives from the Archdiocese of Chicago met with the committee to answer questions regarding financial and possible use options. Attention has been paid to what the parish's needs are for its ministries and programs. The committee is preparing a report with its initial recommendations for submission to Fr. George. If you have any questions regarding this initiative, please contact Steve Ryan at 847-738-0224.
