The crib at the Church is ready and waiting for

our children (and adults) to fill it with pieces of

straw, one piece for every act of kindness we do

during the weeks of Advent. The figure of the

Christ Child is not placed in the crib until

Christmas Eve. By that time, the crib will be full

of soft straw as a bed for the Christ Child.

CHRISTMAS PAGEANT

SUNDAY,

DECEMBER 13

AT 1:00 P.M.

All are welcome to join

us. Reception to follow.

Once there was a boy named Nicholas who was

born far away in Asia Minor. Nicholas was always

good and kind. He liked to help people who were in

need. When his parents died, Nicholas shared his

money with the poor. When he grew up he became a

monk, and later he became a bishop. He continued

to show his love for God by loving and helping

people.

After his death, people remembered the stories

about Nicholas. People in the country of Holland

called him Sinter Klaas. In America his name is

Santa Claus. Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of

children.

Legend has it that children who leave their shoes by

their door will have a visit from the spirit of St

Nicholas. He will go from house to house and leave

candy and treats for good children in their shoes.

From Fr. Fred: The Jubilee Year of Mercy, December 8,

2015-November 20, 2016, begins with the blessing

and opening of a Holy Door.

A holy door has been used since the fifteenth

century to represent conversion. Pilgrims and

penitents pass through it as a gesture of leaving the

past behind and crossing the threshold from sin to

grace, from slavery to freedom, and form darkness to

light.

Passing through a holy door is often

associated with prayer, pilgrimage, sacrifice and

confession.

Saint John Paul II tells us: “To focus on the

door is to recall the responsibility of every believer

to cross its threshold. To pass through that door

means to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord; it is to

strengthen faith in him in order to live the new life

which he has given us. It is a decision which

presumes freedom to choose and also the courage to

leave something behind, in the knowledge that what

is gained is divine life.”

John’s gospel recounts Jesus saying: “I am

the gate for the sheep. Whoever enters through me

will be saved.” (John 10).

In Rome the Holy Year Door of Mercy of St.

Peter’s Basilica will be opened on December 8.

In Hartford the Holy Year Door of Mercy of

St. Joseph’s Cathedral will be opened on December

13 at 3:00 p.m.—and Archbishop Leonard Blair

hopes you will attend.
