Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Community If we are not changing, we are dying. Now if that is a quote, I don’t know who said it. Yet, it’s a true state- ment. And it applies to us, as individuals, and as the Body of Christ. On a number of occasions last year I shared a PowerPoint called, “Setting a Place for the Nones.” The “Nones” are those who were raised as Catholics, but no longer participate, or do so only for the “high” holidays or very occasionally. Yearly, that number climbs high- er. The study was commissioned by The Center for Advanced Re- search Apostolate, (CARA) of Catholic U. of America. What it found was the Catholics who are leaving felt no connection with their fellow parishioners nor understood the value of the sacraments. In short, they had not experienced an encounter with God. We, your OLOL staff, want to change that. Using ideas from two sources I read last year, Faith Formation With a New Generation by John Roberto, et al., and Divine Renovation by Fr. James Mallon, which your Parish Councilors also read, we will be moving to a form of whole community (for everyone, of every loca- tion, age, marital status, etc.) catechesis called, Growing In Faith To- gether (GIFT). Why? Is the faith learned by children well suited for the problems found in the adult world? Would having an adult understanding of the faith and an encounter with God help us to be better leaders in our homes and communities? The hope is yes! Now we know people are busy. The components of GIFT are prayer (Mass), faith talk (adults separate from children) (All who participate in delivery will have had the sexual abuse recognition and reporting (CASE) training and passed background checks.), shared meal, activity and sending forth. It will be once per month, after the 9:30 Mass at St. Michael’s. Come once* or come every month. We hope to build everyone’s understand- ing and application of the faith, and build community. By doing this, we hope to be the kind of Church which attracts people, versus the kind of Church where nobody knows or cares. Patty *Families whose children are preparing for Sacraments must attend GIFT as well as the preparation sessions for the sacraments. 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time 9-08-2019 Weekend Mass Schedule St. Patrick's (StP) N. Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Community

If we are not changing, we are dying.

Now if that is a quote, I don’t know who said it. Yet, it’s a true state-ment. Yearly, that number climbs high-er. The study was commissioned by The Center for Advanced Re-search Apostolate, (CARA) of Catholic U. James Mallon, which your Parish Councilors also read, we will be moving to a form of whole community (for everyone, of every loca-tion, age, marital status, etc.) catechesis called, Growing In Faith To-gether (GIFT). We hope to build everyone’s understand-ing and application of the faith, and build community. By doing this, we hope to be the kind of Church which attracts people, versus the kind of Church where nobody knows or cares. Jesus, by word & example, teaches us to be GIVERS - Givers of a portion of what God first gives to us for His works of religion & charity. Christ was a GIVER - HE EVEN GAVE HIS VERY LIFE FOR EACH ONE OF US. There are no non-givers in heaven. Jesus is telling us, as we GIVE, so shall we RE-CEIVE! He said, “Give & it shall be given to you. Good measure pressed down, shaken together, run-ning over, shall they pour into the fold of your gar-ment. For the measure you measure with will be measured back to you.” (Lk 6:38) Yes, Jesus makes it very clear that I need to GIVE in order to RECEIVE! Also, there are other reasons why I need to give, for example: I need to give as an act of sincere thanks to God

for the 100% He gives to me. I need to give because it is the will of God that I

give a portion of my God-given money to support His works of religion & charity.

I need to give because it makes me more like Christ.

I need to give for my own spiritual well-being THERE ARE NO NON GIVERS IN HEAV-EN!

Faithful stewards are faithful givers. When they die, God will say to them, “Enter now into the joy of your Lord.”

DINING & DIVINITY Thanks to all who came to Dining & Divinity in August as we reflected on Bp. Robert Barron’s se-ries, THE MASS. As I was thinking about the next topic , I thought of an ongoing series called BIBLE 101. We’ll explore the books of the Bible: when, who, why they were written. Looking to return to TUESDAYS SEPT. 17TH; OCT.8;15;22;29 the rest to be determined. Time: 12:15 PM (lunch), end by 1:30PM. Please e mail me [email protected] or call the parish office.

St. Michael School needs volunteers to help at lunch and recess, assist in classrooms, get involved with the PTO, work fundraising events or serve on fundraising committees. This is a great op-portunity to meet other parents and to help the school. If you are interested in helping, please contact the par-ish office. A special thanks to all the volunteers that already help in many ways.

From the Catechism: Sin is any willful thought, word, deed or lack of action that is contrary to God’s law. (Gen. 3:5 & Exodus 20:1-17). It comes in two types, mortal and venial. (1 John 5:16-17) Venial sins are slight offenses. (Matt. 5:19, 12:32 & 1 John 5:16-18) Mortal sins are grave, against God and His laws. (Matt. 12:32 & 1 John 5:16-18) The good news is that de-spite our sinfulness, God does not abandon us! He is always calling, pleading to us to heal our broken relationship with Him and His creation. (Ps. 103:9-10, Jeremiah 3:22, Luke 15:11-32) Will we heed the call?

You Can Help People Escape Poverty: Catholic Campaign for Human Development

As Catholics we’re wonderful at charity work, providing food, clothing, housing etc. for people in need. This is im-portant, but it’s not enough; it doesn’t change the conditions that make people poor. Fifty years ago our U.S. Bishops established the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) to fund efforts by low income people to ad-dress the root cause of their poverty and oppression. CCHD has supported thousands of projects that empower peo-ple to improve their working and housing conditions, get better paying jobs, and stand up for their human dignity. YOU can be part of this effort by generously supporting the special collection for CCHD next weekend, September 14/15. The funds will support major projects across the country and smaller local anti-poverty projects right here in our diocese.
