“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishon-or others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, al-ways perseveres.”

(I Corinthians 13:4-7 NIV)

I will never forget an eye-opening experience Jane and I had when we were still dating. Being in the love-struck frame of mind I was in, I showered her with flowers and other gifts frequently. One day during one of our very honest conversations she told me “I really don’t like flowers.” I was some-what stunned by the comment but as we talked, I began to understand what she meant and also that I had found a very special woman.

Jane explained that there was the cost of the flow-ers and candy and other stuff that I gave her but that the most important thing to her was the giving of myself. Love to her meant personal time spent together. It meant self-sacrifice more than money, cards, or flowers. I’ve learned a lot from my wife over the years but that event that occurred before we were even married is one of the most treasured memories I have of our relationship.

It’s ok to share gifts and do good things for our spouses and friends. But we must always be on guard against equating love with things. Paul’s thirteenth chapter in I Corinthians is a masterpiece of writing that explains the true nature of real love. The Corinthian church had swerved off tracked theologically. Paul had founded the church but there were people and cultural trends that were misleading the church. Perhaps the significance of

what Paul is saying in I Corinthians 13 can be found in the last sentence of Chapter 12. Before he begins to explain love, he says: “Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. And yet I will show you the most excellent way.” (I Corinthians 12:31)

Yes, before Paul begins his famous love chapter, he makes clear that he is not pandering to the pop-ular views of the Corinthian culture. He is encour-aging the Corinthians to take the highest view of the most important concept of Jesus Christ. I John 4:19 says:

“We love because He first loved us.”

Our understanding of love as believers begins with God’s great love for us through creation. It is giv-en substance in the birth of his son Jesus. And it comes to fulfillment in the death of Jesus on the Cross.

Over 20 years ago, when Jane’s best friend learned that she had told me she didn’t like flow-ers she said, “She’s gonna regret that one day!” But I don’t think Jane has ever regretted the spe-cial love we share that is beyond anything earthly.

I treasure my wife and hope all of you will learn the true meaning of love as we have. It’s appro-priate (and wise!) to do special things on Valen-tine’s Day. But remember each and every day that true love is not based on things but on self-sacrifice as we learned from our Lord Jesus.

The Stated Session meeting for February will be a planning retreat on Saturday, February 16th at 7:30 am.

The Silver Lining Group will be holding their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, February 19th at 11:30 am at Golden Corral in North Myrtle Beach.

Remember to support the Food Pantry with non-perishable food items. The first Sunday of each month is our day to focus on collections for the Food Pantry.

Children’s Church is available for children K-3rd grade every Sunday after the Children’s Sermon.

Please keep Pastor Tim updated on joys and prayer concerns.

Please pray for the Family Life Center Committee as they commit their time and talents to this project. Pastor Tim, Elder Bobbie Ingle and Ron Barron will be attending the ECO Nathional Gathering Conference in Colorado Springs the week of January 28th - February 1st. Please remember them in prayer for safe travels.

The Bible should be at the center of everything we do as a church. Bible Study is, therefore, an integral part of our lives as disciples. In order to make our small group Bible Studies more available we have several sessions, as listed below. Each of our Bible Study groups is different. Please consider attending one of these sessions on a regular basis or let Pastor Tim know if there is another time that would work better for you.

Thank you to everyone who came out and helped make the Fish Fry such a huge success! If you weren’t able to help this time, there will be plenty of other fundraisers you can help with this Spring!... Our High School youth will be experiencing another first later this month - our first ever High School Ski and Wor-ship Retreat! This is going to be a fun and exciting weekend for everyone! We are looking to make this an annual trip for our high school youth and we can’t wait to tell everyone about our experience... In clos-ing, February is the month we celebrate Valentine’s Day by telling those who are close to us just how much we love them. Let us be reminded that we should treat every day like it’s Valentine’s Day when it comes to our relationship with Jesus. Live each day so that our love for Him is obvi-ous for everyone to see - including Him!

Testament means “covenant” or contract.”

The Bible was written under the inspira-tion of the Holy Spirit by over 40 authors from all walks of life: shepherds, farm-

ers, tent-makers, physicians, fishermen,

priests, philosophers and kings.

Moses wrote the first five books of the Bible, referred to as the Pentateuch; the

foundation of the Bible.

The Apostle Paul wrote 14 books (over half) of the New Testament.

The Bible was written over a period of 1,500 years, from around 1450 B.C. (the

time of Moses) to about 100 A.D. (following the death and resurrection of

Jesus Christ).
