Some months remind me of the Bill Murray Movie “ G r o u n d H o g Day”, and Febru-ary is one of those months. I know Valentine’s Day is coming up. Matter of fact it has never changed over the years anymore than my belly button has changed locations. So the challenge is to be ahead of the bow wave and not behind it when thinking about your lovely wife. Not that I am an athlete of much capability anymore I think the saying goes like this: “Men, let’s put this one away early and not wait until the buzzer!” If you are at a loss take a look at what programs we are offering dur-ing the month that might be your safety net for this much appreciated day by our wives. While many are not aware of this there has been a raging debate within Fort Hood as to who made the best hamburger and you get a chance to sort that out and vote by trying our ham-burgers out at those FMWR facilities that do burgers. I have selected my win-ner along with a long shot-we’ll see how close I come in the reading a crystal ball skill test. See our article on how this is going to be conducted. Finally, be safe in all that you do!

Calendar

In honor of Valentine’s Day on February 14, what is the most romantic thing a Valentine has done for you?

He bought me a plane ticket instead of sending me flowers so we could get married early!

Melisa Cantrell

My husband and I love playing Scrabble (though neither of us are very good). One morning he got the kids up quietly, made breakfast, and on the table was the Scrabble board with words like “beautiful”, “love”, “strong”, etc. spelled out. I think he managed to use almost every tile! He is a true romantic even after three kids and five deployments!

Christal Bardfield

My husband was gone on deployment number two. He called me one day telling me that I needed to drive to Baumholder to drop some of his paperwork off. I was in the middle of my Saturday weekend cleaning marathon and I was really annoyed that I had to drive over there. When I got there, my husband was there! I had no idea he would be there. He called me the days before from different air-ports he stopped at… I had no idea.

Bianca Kaiser Wisdom

My husband was deployed and sent me flowers for every letter in the words “Happy Valentine’s Day”. He will be gone this year for Valentine’s Day again so I can’t wait to see what he does!

your name! Fort Hood’s very

own golf course has lots to offer golfers of every skill level around this time of year. For the more seasoned golfers, the Courses of Clear Creek will host a Winter Classic 4-Person Scramble on February 13. The fee to compete is $10, which goes to-wards the prize money fund, plus greens fee and cart. Also sign up for the monthly CG’s Warrior Payday Scramble, which will take place on February 26. Teams of four must consist of at least three players from a battalion on Fort Hood and the cost to play is $30 per person. The official golf season begins in March, so stop by the courses on February 22 to get your annual pass-es! And in honor of the new golfing season, come Party at the Greens on March 5 for a 9-hole scramble. A $35 per person registration fee will

include green fee, cart, dinner and great prizes. It’s one of the biggest Fort Hood golfing events of the year so you definitely don’t want to miss out! If you’re not so experienced in the golfing arena, have no fear be-cause golf clinics are here! The clin-ics will kick off on March 9 with the Men’s Clinic, which will take place at 5:30pm on Tuesday and Thursday for 3 weeks. The clinic is only $55 for six total sessions. The Ladies Clinics (both beginner and advanced) will begin in April, so sign up early to reserve your spot! Finally, did you know that you can host golf fundraisers at the Courses of Clear Creek? This will free up space for a relaxing reading area in the main library. The new children’s room will feature a collection of learning kits for check-out, a children’s activities computer, a card catalog computer and computers for parent and child to work together. Or join the Patches Reading Club for fun reading and rewards! The library has many activities in addition to the regular services such as reserving books, inter-library loans, references and research assistance. Enjoy monthly displays of books and materials on special subjects. Story time is held every Friday from 10-11am for preschoolers to age 5. A special activity this February is a chance to compete in the Library Olympic Games! Packets are available for pick up beginning February 1 so get ready for a little friendly library competition! T here really isn’t anything more American than a hot, juicy hamburger fresh off the grill. We take our burgers real seriously around these parts; especially us Texans. Burger lovers unite! Fort Hood Family and

Morale, Welfare and Recreation brings you the Ultimate Hood Burger Challenge in honor of Burger Lover’s Day on February 15. Though I personally eat them year round, at this time of year, a hamburger is a welcomed break: a food reminder that sunny summer days and easy eating outside is just around the corner. Beginning February 1, stop by the Sportsmen’s Center Grill, Strike Zone at Phantom Warrior Lanes, The Courses of Clear Creek Snack Bar or Club Hood and order up a scrumptious hamburger. With your order, ask for a Burger Challenge voting card (free of charge). Through February 26, stop by each location and receive a stamp on your card for ordering a burger. You’ve got four weeks to sample four different hamburgers, as often as you desire;

have lunch, dinner or make it an afternoon snack. After you’ve tried a burger at each location and your card is stamped by each facility, use your card to vote for your favorite (by circling the location that served up the most mouth-watering hamburger). Drop the card in the marked box at the Sportsmen’s Center Grill, Strike Zone at Phantom Warrior Lanes, The Courses of Clear Creek Snack Bar, Club Hood or the Marketing Department in the Phantom Warrior Center. Voting ends at midnight on February 26 and only entries with a stamp from each location will be counted. The facility that receives the most votes will win a beautiful hamburger plaque to display proudly on their wall for all to see. What’s in it for you besides sampling tasty burgers throughout our post? Well, one voting card will be drawn and that person will win their own kit fit for a hamburger king- a Weber “Smokey Joe”mini grill, grilling utensils, charcoal and, of course, a grill master’s apron. s

A Murderer Among Usby Monty Campbell

t was a cold, dark night in a warm, moist room when the guest heard the most startling scream that she had ever heard. Several thoughts ran through her head. Was

it her friend that was supposed to meet her at the bar for drinks prior to their dinner? Was it a maid that was working late into the evening, preparing the executive suite for the CEO of a major corporation’s stay? Or was it that young model, that was in town for the photo shoot before the BCS National Championship game? Eva was excited to be in town to meet up with some of her investment partners, which would eventually help pave the way for her illustrious career in real-estate develop-ment on the west coast. It had been a dream of Eva’s since she had taken some classes in high school. This was her moment to shine but the shrill of the scream disturbed her. Growing up in the rural fields of Indiana, Eva had never

been to Los Angeles before, let alone the west coast, and the hustle and bustle of the big city was beginning to get to her. This ultra-foreign concept of city life had her concerned and now this sudden shriek…what was she to think? Could she be in the midst of some high-profile killing spree? Eva began to relax, after a few more drinks of her bever-age, and convinced herself that the scream she heard was a mere fluke occurrence of a door shutting on someone’s fingers or the stubbing of a toe. And besides, her friend was notorious for being a few minutes late. Becoming more alarmed of her friend not showing for the dinner date, Eva began questioning random guests about whether or not they had heard the scream, as well. Everyone she asked claimed to have not heard anything of the sort and some guests even resorted to asking Eva how much she had to drink.

Eva knew what she heard was not a figment of her imagination and her friend, although often late to meetings, was never THIS late, so she began to set out on a quest to find out what and where the scream actually came from. Have you ever had the opportunity to try and figure out a strange mystery or for that matter, have you had the opportunity to try and solve a murder? Of course, we are talking about a Murder Mystery Theater – not an actual crime scene investigation. Well, now is your opportunity as Club Hood pres-ents its annual Valentine’s Day murder mystery the-ater, “Cupid’s Arrow”, February 14. Dinner will be served at 5 pm with the show to begin at 6 pm. The cost of the dinner theater is $35 per ticket and reser-vations are preferred. For more information or to set reservations, call 254-532-5073. s

have to admit I was little skeptical about the spinning program when I first heard about it. I can compre-hend the appeal of riding with friends on the local roadways, but cycling in a packed, hot, and smelly

exercise room? And going nowhere? Boring…right?

Health

I Of course, I was completely mistaken! Granted, the surroundings remain the same, but the ride changes con-tinuously. Spinning class keeps your mind engaged while strongly challenging your whole body. What is this new found fitness program I am speaking of? Spinning is an aerobic exercise that takes place on a specially designed stationary bicycle called (and clearly adequate) a spinning bike. As you pedal, inspiring music plays and the instructor eggs you on through a mental pic-ture of an outdoor workout. “You’re going up a long hill now, you can see the top, you’re almost there...” During the class you have the freedom to vary your pace—rang-ing from pedaling as fast as you can, to cranking up the tension and pedaling slowly from a standing position. Spin class burns serious calories (about 450 in 45 minutes to be exact) and offers an amazing aerobic work-out that makes your heart pump fast. It also tones various muscle groups like your quadriceps, hamstrings, and my favorite the, gluteus maximus! Because you stay in one place with the same basic movement throughout, Spin class doesn’t involve a lot of coordination; it’s easier to focus on your form than in other types of aerobic les-sons. And although you follow the general instructions of the spin teacher, you are in control when it comes to your pace. You can finish a spin class, regardless of your fitness level, simply by adjusting your pace or the tension level of your bike. Moreover, this awesome fitness opportunity is of-fered for FREE at Abrams Physical Fitness Center here on the “Great Place.” Spinning class will not only meet, but exceed your expectations. sexceed your expectations. exceed your expectations.

inters aren’t too harsh in Texas, but usually cold enough to scare us away from the great outdoors. February is about the time that

the sweet sun reappears and temperatures begin to draw us outside again. Fort Hood’s Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation has just what you are looking for as they have amped up the adrenaline with Area 111, Fort Hood’s own ATV Park, the Paintball Course at Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area, and The Sportsmen’s Center Archery and the Skeet Ranges. Open during daylight hours only, Area 111 (located on Clear Creek Road and West Range Road) encompasses the true passion of the sport with varying, natural terrain for riders of all skill levels. While personally-owned vehicles are not authorized on the course, the course does welcome dirt bike and ATV owners. Riders must wear a helmet, gloves, goggles and closed-toe shoes. As another safety precaution, the buddy system is mandatory. All users must purchase an ATV permit, prior to riding at Area 111. Permits are available at the Sportsmen’s Center, Bldg. 1937, Rod and Gun Club

Loop and may be purchased either annually or daily. The annual Family package can be purchased for $50, while an annual individual permit costs riders $20. One-day permits are also available for $5 per rider. For more information, call the Sportsmen’s Center at 254-532-4552. As if the adrenaline of an ATV course does not already warm you up, how about a game of paintball at the newly re-opened BLORA paintball course? BLORA is located on North Nolan Road, 10 miles from East Range Road. Access to the park is also possible from FM 439 and Sparta Road. Splat it up at BLORA’s Paintball Course, with three playing fields, available for beginners to experts on Saturday, Sunday and Holidays, 10am-6pm. Special arrangements, coordinated and approved in advance, may be made to accommodate large groups on weekdays. Open to the public. For more details call the Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area office at 254-287-4907. . Finally, if those two activities do not warm you up the Sportsmen’s Center has an archery range and trap and skeet shooting for the avid outdoorsman. s

hroughout the continuous phases of the deployment cycle, Soldiers live and train for the next deployment. Ever vigilant, they continue to hone their skills, train in

their specialty skill and prepare to engage “the enemy” one more time. They “steel up” for the day when, once again, they march forward onto buses and airplanes and wave farewell to their Families and love ones. Standing in the dark hours of the night, in gyms, unit parking lots, and designated departure points, are the Families who remain behind. Tis-sues in hand and children in tow, they face yet another time of separation and wonder again what new challenges this deployment will bring. To better prepare and support those Fami-lies, Army Community Service (ACS) Soldier and Family Readiness Branch (SFRB) continuously identifies and provides ways to breech the con-stant stresses and challenges faced during de-ployments. Family Focus on Deployment (FFD) is one of the many activities that ACS promotes to enhance the readiness of Fort Hood Families. Since its initial implementation in January 2007, FFD has provided seven quarterly activi-ties to more than 3,500 Family Members and over 1,000 military children. The far reaching short and long term impact of this “best prac-tice” program reflects directly on the Army Fam-ily Covenant promise to promote Soldier and Family readiness and quality of life enhance-ment through continued direct support and in-tervention. Reduced stress, enhanced readiness, camaraderie, a shared sense of belonging, care and

concern directly reflect on the community mind-set, visibly demonstrating that Fort Hood Fami-lies remain in the forefront of support by and for our military. Families attending the FFD have encoun-tered a wide variety of activities and venues. Each activity targets a different aspect of the challenges a Soldier and Family must face during the various cycles of deployment. Spouse Field Exercise, Chill and Unwind, Financial Readiness, Personal Preparation and Military Youth Mock Deployments are but a few of the special events prepared and presented to Fort Hood Families to enhance and improve their resiliency – their ability to face adversity and challenge, and come through to the other side of the deployment. Every quarter, Family Focus on Deploy-ment events are scheduled; with the next Mili-tary Youth Mock Deployment event tentatively scheduled for April 17. This event invites school age children to learn more about the deployment process that their parents face before moving forward to their new stations. This is the third event dedicated to reaching out to the children of Fort Hood and continues to grow in impact, purpose and reach. Tentatively scheduled for April 17,the next FFD promises new activities, displays and events designed to further ensure the readiness of Fort Hood’s military kids. For more information on this and other ACS programs and activities, stop by Army Community Service, Soldier and Family Readiness Branch, Bldg 16005, TJ Mills and Old Ironsides, or call 254-288-3566.s

o you think you have what it takes to be Fort Hood’s next young star? Do you have the voice of Mariah Carey,

the stage presence of Justin Timberlake and the dance moves of Michael Jackson? If you answered yes, we need you to enter the CYS Services Presents: Made Fort Hood Young Stars Competition.

The competition is a four-week, single elimination singing competition similar to television shows like “American Idol.” Each Saturday throughout March, youth in first through twelfth grade will compete for the ti-tle of Fort Hood’s Young Star, the opportunity to perform in front of their peers at the Month of the Military Child Fest and Youth Ball, plus win Visa gift cards valued at $225. The first round of competition will be a cappella and judged by a panel, the subsequent rounds of judging will be based on 50 percent of judg-es’ vote and 50 percent of the audience vote. Registration runs through February 26 and is free for all youth who are registered with CYS Services. The first three rounds – March 6, 13 and 20 will be held at High Chaparral

D Youth Center with the final round held at Phan-tom Warrior Center on March 27. All rounds will be held 2-4pm. For participants who would like a bit of prep for the competition, the Edge program and SKIESUnlimited are offering the “Want to be A Star? Get Made!” package this month featuring Sensation in Song, Groove and Star Power. Sen-sation in Song will teach the basics of singing, Groove will teach the basics of dance and Star Power will include instruction on stage pos-ture, walk and presentation techniques. ake the right choice for your special child and be part of the Special Needs Accommodation Process (SNAP) on Fort Hood. In conjunction with Army Community Service and the Exceptional

Family Member Program (EFMP), SNAP is available to help establish child care, school-age, youth services or recreational sports and fitness

activities that may help alleviate stress on parents. SNAP consists of a multi disciplinary team of professionals who

assist Families with determining the safest, least restrictive and most appropriate placement for children, youth and teens requiring

special care. The program’s ultimate goal is to help all children reach and realize their full potential while accommodating

their special needs. The process evaluates health, developmental,

physical, social, emotional, learning, and behavioral issues that may affect your child.

It is SNAP’s philosophy and goal, when reasonable, to honor personal choices for child care, school age services and youth services, as well as participation in recreational activities for children.

To get started, parents must first register their child with Child, Youth

& School Services on Fort Hood. Registration can be completed at

Parent Central, inside the Rivers Building (Bldg 121, at 761st

Tank Battalion Boulevard). During registration, simply complete the SNAP screening form, which will be reviewed. For more information, call Child, Youth & School Services at 254-287-8029 or stop by Parent Central Services to speak to someone in person. s
