4-H Leader Training Leader Training will be held on February 13th at the

Cuming County Courthouse in West Point. Snacks will

be served at 6:00 p.m. with the training beginning at

6:30 p.m. We will provide updates on changes in the fair

book as well as new requirements for Quality Assurance.

We will have a refresher on 4-H Online Enrollment for

members, leaders and volunteers. Also will discuss

4-H Awareness Week Join us to celebrate 4-H Awareness Week February

24-March 3rd. 4-H Clubs are encouraged to participate

in a window display contest throughout the county! The

windows will be voted on at the Kick-Off Party on

February 24th. Prizes will be awarded to top windows.

Please have your window display up by February 20th.

your window in order to have them entered for the

voting at the Kick-Off Party!

YOUR … 4-H Council During the 2018 4-H Achievement Day, new members

were welcomed to the Cuming County 4-H Council.

You have some wonderful representatives who are there

to be your voice should you have any suggestions or

concerns. Your 2019 4-H Council are: Dave Karnopp, Amber

Buhrman, Sherry Roeber, Andrea Stewart, Laura Ritter,

Alicia Rehak, Todd Schroeder, Kara Sweeney, Karina

Hasenkamp, and Chris Schiller. The 4-H Council youth

members include Levi Schiller, Brandon Sindelar, and

Reece Snodgrass.

2018 Seniors You can collect your scholarship money at any time,

deadline for collection of your scholarship is June 1,

2019. Please bring in the following documentation to

claim your scholarship:

Proof of completion of your first semester/term of

college classes (copy of your grades or

documentation of completion of Basic Training)

Thank You note to the 4-H Council

The completed 4-H questionnaire you previously

received (another copy is available at the Extension

Office)

NACEB Scholarship The Nebraska Association of County Extension

Boards (NACEB) Scholarship Program for the current

academic year deadline is March 16. Scholarship Includes:

One $1,000 scholarship for a current student

(sophomore or higher) enrolled in CASNR or CEHS

One $1,000 scholarship at the University of

Nebraska-Lincoln College of Agricultural Sciences

and Natural Resources (CASNR) or in the College of

Education and Human Sciences (CEHS) for an

incoming student (freshmen or transfer student).

Local Cuming County Youth

Scholarships The Cuming County Feeders Association and the

Cuming County Pork Producers both award scholarships

to youth from Cuming County. The scholarships are

awarded to students who will be pursuing a two or four

year degree with an agricultural major. Application

deadline is March 15. Complete details are available at

High School Guidance Counselor offices.

Online 4-H Leader Enrollment In 2019, 4-H leaders will also enroll through the online

enrollment process that was used last year by 4-H

members. Current leaders and volunteers were enrolled

through the online process. However, the whole process

is still evolving to make it as easy as possible for

everyone. Instructions for enrolling and re-enrolling are

available on our website: www.cuming.unl.edu. Cuming

County 4-H enrollment deadline is March 15.

What’s Your Status? Help Needed Placing New Members As new members start contacting the Extension Office

we need to know which clubs will be open to new

memberships, who to contact and what your focus

project areas are. We will be collecting this information

at Leader Training but if you are unable to attend please

contact us.

2019 Public Speaking & PSA Contest The 4-H Public Speaking and PSA Contest will be

held on March 28 at West Point-Beemer High School.

There will be three age divisions with ribbons and

trophies in each division. The entry deadline is March

21st. The Special Topic for this year’s Public Speaking

Contest is “4-H through the Years”.

The PSA category must follow the topic “Inspire Kids

to Do”. All 4-H PSA’s must include the following

tagline within the last 10 seconds: “Learn more about

Nebraska Extension 4-H Youth Development

Program at 4h.unl.edu”. The tagline is included in the

60 second time limit. The tagline Know How, Know

Now should not be used.

2019 Culinary Challenge The 4-H Culinary Challenge helps demonstrate

healthy decision making through nutrition, menu

planning, food preparation, and food safety. Eligible

youth must be: ages 10-18, enrolled in a Foods &

Nutrition project, in a team of 2 and pay the $5

registration fee. This year’s event will take place on

Saturday, August 31st during the second weekend of

the Nebraska State Fair. It will be held in the Raising

Nebraska Building. This year’s challenge ingredient is

DAIRY. More information can be found at

Healthy Habits Ambassadors If you are interested in

education or nutrition,

this is a great opportunity

to gain valuable

experience! Serve as a

teen ambassador for the

4-H Healthy Habits

program, which

encourages youth and

their families to take

choices and increase physical fitness. You will work

alongside an extension professional to deliver programs

to youth all while gaining leadership skills, exploring

career options, and building your resume.

Omaha Fashion Week We would like to congratulate 4-H member Audrey

Glaubius on having her outfit selected for the 4-H

Collection at Omaha Fashion Week! The collection

consists of 13 garments from across the state, modeled

by the 4-H member who made it. The event will take

place on Tuesday, February 26th at 8:00 p.m. at the

Omaha Design Center near TD Ameritrade Park in

Omaha. Congratulations Audrey!

Cuming County 4-H Market Beef

Weigh Day Cuming County 4-H Market Beef Weigh Day will

be held March 2, at the Harry Knobbe Feed Yards

from 9:00-11:00 a.m.

If you plan on showing market beef for the first time

or are new to the 4-H program, please contact our office

so we can get the necessary information to you.

2019 Livestock Online Database

Again this year, all livestock information must be

entered into the AKSARBEN database by the respective

deadlines. This means that each family will be in charge

of making sure that all of their livestock information is

submitted and correct. More details will be shared when

they are available to Extension Staff.

2019 Livestock Updates Nomination Requirements

No changes for animal identification. All market &

breeding sheep and goats must have a scrapie tag. All

market hogs and market beef must have an 840 EID tag

and breeding heifers must have a tattoo.

DNA Envelopes for NE State Fair

DNA envelopes will be $7.00 per envelope. All

breeding nominations will be $2.00 per online entry.

Exhibitors will be able to dual nominate an animal as

breeding and market if selected and paid for in Show

Stock Manager. Families will now receive a receipt that

they have entered in a breeding nomination.

Submitting Animal Information into Show Stock

Manager Livestock Database

Once again, exhibitors will be responsible for

submitting their animal information into the Show Stock

Manager Livestock Database prior to the nomination

deadlines. Our office will continue to mail in the DNA

envelopes. Once the information is in the database and

has been validated by the Extension Educator, it will

then be available for exhibitors to make State Fair

entries.

Any animal entry not in the database or have DNA

submitted will not be considered nominated and eligible

for State Fair.

Livestock Affidavits (County)

We would still like all livestock exhibitors to continue

utilizing the livestock affidavits that have been

completed all the previous years. We would like you to

list all project animals on the appropriate affidavit (ID

Sheets). This includes those animals that are eligible for

State Fair as well as those that are county only. Please

complete them and turn them into the Extension Office

by the June 15th deadline. ID Sheets are available on our

website which can be found by clicking here: 4-H

Livestock Affidavits.

District Horse Show Note: All level testing must be completed by April 25

for State and District entries. ID forms and entries are

due May 10 to the Extension Office.

4-H Horse Stampede Mark your calendars!! The 4-H Horse Stampede has

been scheduled for Saturday, March 30. Entries are due

Companion Animal Challenge The 4-H Companion Animal Challenge has been

scheduled for Saturday, March 30. Entries are due to

the county office by March 1.

The Companion Animal Challenge allows youth to

compete in companion animal events without their

animals. The 4-H Companion Animal Challenge will

include the following events: Demonstration Contest,

Dog Quiz Bowl, Dog Skill-a-thon Contest, Art Contest,

and Photography Contest. Rules, entry forms, and t-shirt

order forms can be found online

Nebraska Cattlemen's Classic The Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic will be held

February 16-24 in Kearney at the Buffalo County

Fairgrounds. The Junior Show will be February 23-24.

If you are interested in Horse, Livestock, Meats,

Skill-a-thon, Poultry, or Dog Judging please contact the

Extension Office and let us know that you are interested.

We will be sending out correspondence throughout the

year and don’t want to miss you!

Livestock Quality Assurance Transition

Plan Nebraska is now part of a national team that

introduced the curriculum called Youth for the Quality

Care of Animals (YQCA). This is the second year it has

been available.

Nebraska requires all 4-H members exhibiting beef,

bucket calves, sheep, swine, dairy cattle, poultry and

rabbits to be trained or tested. The options available are:

Online course completion through YQCA at a

cost of $12.00 per member for completion of

modules which must be completed annually.

In order to access YQCA, youth must be active

in 4-H Online.

Face to Face Training being offered on May 30

at the Cuming County Fairgrounds starting at

1:00 p.m. Youth must sign-up and pay the

$3.00 in advance of training through YQCA

site. This event is held annually.

Test-out options are available to youth in the

first year of Intermediate (age 12) and Senior

(age 15) age levels. There is no test-out option

for Juniors. Participants will have only one

chance to take the test-out option. Test-out costs

are:

o Intermediate: $36 ($12 x 3 yrs. of

certification)

o Senior: $48 ($12 x 4 years of certification)

Deadline for completion is June 15th. Complete

details can be found at 4h.unl.edu/yqca

Special Project Grants

Do you need some funding to help you start a major

community service project – possible your level six

Diamond Clover Project? Potential sources for funding

include Cuming County 4-H Foundation Special Project

Grant and KD Lee Special Project Grant. The

application is simple and available from the Extension

Office. Applications are due to the Extension Office on

the 1st of January, March, May, July, September or

November.

Also consider applying to the Cuming County Public

Power District for their Round-Up Funds. For more

information, contact the Power District at 402-372-2463.

Diamond Clover Recognition Program This self-paced, six level program is designed to

challenge members to enroll in a variety of projects and

activities that will help to develop lifetime skills and

self-esteem. This program is:

Non-competitive

Recognition for all 4-H members – those in

traditional clubs as well as independent

members

Self-paced, based on member’s interest and

schedule

Incorporates community service and a learning

project

An assistant to help members broaden their

knowledge and life skill base

Ideas for Clover Colleges If you saw an exhibit at a fair this past summer and

think that it would be a great Clover College workshop,

we are open to suggestions! Please share your ideas and

possible resources with us by February 9th!

4-H Foundation Memorial Do you have someone that you would like to

remember with a memorial? Please consider the Cuming

County 4-H Foundation. The Cuming County 4-H

Foundation has completed all of the 501(c)3 tax

requirements so that your donations will be tax exempt.

Funds donated to the Cuming County 4-H Foundation

help with special programs, 4-H scholarships, Club

Congress expenses, camp vouchers and much more to

provide quality 4-H experiences for all of our members.

If you have questions about the 4-H Foundation, to make

contributions or memorials, please contact the Extension

Office.

Nebraska Agricultural Youth Institute The Nebraska Agricultural Youth Institute will be

July 8-12 for high school juniors and seniors from all

across Nebraska. This year’s theme is “Accepting the

Challenge” where youth will get the opportunity to learn

about career opportunities within agriculture. This

conference features speakers, workshops, agricultural

education, networking with peers and industry leaders,

professional development, leadership experience, fun

and new friends! All of these experiences are free of

charge! The application deadline is April 15, 2018.

Applications are online by going to

www.nda.nebraska.gov/nayi and clicking on “Apply

Now”.

Innovative Youth Corn Challenge

Do you enjoy being

outside? Learning new

things about crops?

Considering a career

involving crops, insects,

diseases, soils, water or

more? Do you want to help

figure out how to feed our

world’s growing population

in a sustainable way? Nebraska Extension and the Nebraska Corn Board are

offering the sixth Innovative Youth Corn Challenge

contest. This contest, open to 4-H members (age 10 &

older as of Jan. 1st) or FFA members (in-school

members), guides participants through all aspects of corn

production, as well as agricultural careers related to corn

production.

As a team (2 or more participants), youth will be

challenged to implement a production practice different

than normal to determine if they increased their yield.

Economics and sustainability of the practice will also be

considered. Yields, cropping history, and production

information will be collected in the Corn Yield

Challenge management summary.

Cash prizes and plaques will be given to the first,

second, and third place teams. To participate in 2019, youth must complete and

return an entry form by March 15th to the Fillmore

County Extension Office in Geneva, NE. Forms can be
