Hey Homemakers!

I hope you’re all staying warm and safe this winter. I love the snow – I realize I’m one of the minority here, but for my

family, snow means getting outside, away from work, and sledding and enjoying time together. When the weather is

nice, we’re all out and about doing our daily things. This past weekend, I stayed at my parents’ house and we just hung

out because there was nowhere to go. We watched movies, built a puzzle, and played in the snow. Quality family time

that we wouldn’t have had had the sun been shining. So for as much as I love the sun, I appreciate the times when it

gives way to let the other seasons shine too.

The only time I don’t enjoy the snow is when it cancels things I’m excited about. There’s a few of those things coming

up soon. First, the council meeting. It will be my first one I’ll actually be able to attend since I’ve been here! I’m excited

about that. Also, International Day. And a few club meetings. Hopefully I’ll be seeing several of you this month.

For those of you I won’t be seeing at meetings or club events, don’t forget that I’m in the office (sometimes!) and you’re

always welcome to stop by. If you attended the Frankfort trip, we have a copy of our group picture in the Capitol ready

and you’re welcome to stop and get it any time!

We also have a sign up sheet to reserve your copy of the Homemaker history book. They’re wonderful! If you reserved

one before, it’s printed and ready to be picked up. If you want to swing by and look at one and buy one, you’re welcome

to do that too!

I’m looking forward to seeing so many of you in the next few weeks!

Open Sewing Day

Visit Open Sewing Day on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month at the Hardin County Extension Office, 201 Peterson Drive, Elizabethtown, (from 8:00-4:00 p.m.). You don’t need a reservation—just show up, bring a project and have fun! *Note: On the 1st Thursday of the month we will have a Master Clothing Volunteer available between 1-4 p.m. to assist with your sewing projects. To All Hardin County Homemaker Clubs: Our annual Homemaker Spring Bazaar will be on March 5 this year and is just a little over a month away. As you know, this is our fundraiser and all proceeds will go toward the Hardin County Extension Homemaker Scholarship. To help with the purchase of food that we will be selling, we would appreciate a monetary donation from each club in the amount of $5.00. Also, please don't forget about the bake sale at the bazaar. This year we ask that each club prepare and donate (6) items, large and small. This can be whole cakes, pies, breads, fudge, brownies, and cookies (either in a container or two to a baggie) etc. You can bring these items on Friday afternoon before the bazaar or on Saturday morning. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to call our Bazaar Chairperson, Lavinda Curl at 502-821-4913

Ingredients

Waffles

1 cup whole-wheat flour

½ cup quick-cooking oats

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon sugar

¼ cup unsalted pecans,

chopped

2 large eggs, separated

1½ cup fat-free (skim) milk

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Fruit Topping

2 cups fresh strawberries,

halved

1 cup fresh blackberries

1 cup fresh blueberries

1 teaspoon powdered sugar

All berries may be substituted with

frozen, thawed

Directions Preheat waffle iron. Combine flour, oats, baking powder, sugar, and pecans in a large

bowl.

Combine egg yolks, milk, and vegetable oil in a separate bowl, and

mix well. Add liquid mixture to the dry ingredients, and stir together. Do not

overmix; mixture should be a bit lumpy. Whip egg whites to medium peaks. Gently fold egg whites into bat-

ter. Pour batter into preheated waffle iron, and cook until the waffle iron

light signals it’s done or steam stops coming out of the iron. A waffle is perfect when it is crisp and well-browned on the outside with a moist, light, airy and fluffy inside. (Or make pancakes.)

Add fresh fruit and a light dusting of powdered sugar to each waffle, and serve.

Tip: For pancakes, do not separate eggs. Mix whole eggs with milk and oil, and

eliminate steps 4 and 5.

Yield: 4 servings

Serving Size: 3 small (2-inch) or 1 large (6-inch) waffle

(depending on waffle iron size)

with more classes:

Vertical Gardening – February 2, 2016, 6 p.m. - $5 The ver tical gardening concept will be explained,

demonstrated and a hands on project will be completed. Design ideas and a materials list will be provided. Check out this

class and learn how to 'grow up' and fill that empty spot in your garden or landscaping. Your payment is your

registration.

A Thing or 2: Tips and Tricks of Gardening – February 17, 6 p.m. – FREE - Join us for an informal discussion

about gardening success- and failure- based on twenty plus years of experience as a gardener. Find out what is important

and what isn’t. Share tips and techniques. Learn to have fun with your gardening!

Planning a Butterfly and Pollinator Garden - February 23, 6 p.m. - $5 What are the key ingredients in attracting

butterflies and bees to a garden? Discover the “secret” sauce in this talk about plants that draw in the birds, bees and

butterflies. Your payment is your registration.

Starting Tomatoes from Seed - March 7, 6 p.m. - $5 Be the envy of your neighbors with the fir st tomato on the

block! You can also have the most unusual or tastiest ones! How, you ask? By starting them yourself. Don’t rely on the

varieties that the store has for your tomatoes, with thousands of varieties to choose from, come and discover how to start

your own. Your payment is your registration.

How to Grow: Roses - March 16, 6 p.m. - $5 Have you tr ied growing roses but have had no luck? This class will

take you through rose care basics and give you some tips and hints for growing this classic flower.

Making a Mosaic Pot - March 21 and 22, 6 p.m. - $35 In this two-part class, you will decorate an 8-inch

terracotta pot and saucer with mosaic tiles in the first class. Then, come back the next night and learn all about

grouting. Class size is limited.

Transplanting Trees - March 22, 6 p.m. - FREE What’s involved in giving a tree the best star t in life? Come and

learn the best way of planting balled and burlapped and containerized trees in your yard.

Conifer for Kentucky Gardens - April 20, 6 p.m. - $5 Boxwood Blight, Needle Cast of Spruce and the Pine

Sawfly, oh my! Conifers and needled evergreens have a tough time in Kentucky with the hot, dry summers

and erratic winters. Come and experience the diversity of this plant group and find the right evergreen for your

gardens.

Payment for each of the Gardener’s Toolbox classes are required TWO WEEKS prior to the class date. You will

be registered on a first pay, first registered basis. Cancellations will be fully refunded TWO WEEKS prior to the

class date. Please let us know as early as possible if you have to cancel, we probably have others on a wait list.

Dear Homemakers, I hope you had a holiday filled with lots of fun with family and friends, and I pray that you have many blessings throughout this New Year. On December 7, 2015, our past president of Hardin County Extension Homemakers, Debbie McQueary of Cecilia Homemakers, hosted the Hardin County Extension Homemakers President’s Luncheon at First Christian Church. Thanks to Debbie and her com-mittee for a delicious ham/turkey dinner that was enjoyed by HCEH past presidents, current HCEH board members and the Heartland Fillies who entertained all with their Christmas songs after the meal. We thank the Heartland Fillies for taking time from their busy schedule to share their beautiful voices with us. Also during the holiday season on December 9, Dayna Parrett and I had the pleasure of visiting with Upton Homemakers at O’Charley’s. While we were there, we had a trivia game about “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and later exchanged gifts. Thank you, Upton Homemakers, for the food and wonderful fellowship. It was a pleasure to visit with you even if I couldn’t write answers about “A Charlie Brown Christmas”! My wish is to visit with each Homemaker club this year. Our first HCEH Council meeting of the year is February 1, 2016. Hopefully, the weather will be kinder than it’s been lately so that all clubs will be represented at our meeting. I would love to see all of you. If you are representing your club, please bring information about your club’s most important accomplishments of this past year to our meeting, or send them to me via email (pdmccamish@yahoo.com). I will compile your information and deliver to the Lincoln Trail Area Council on February 2. Lisa Curl of West Point Homemakers, our International Chair, has invited Anna Miserindino of Vine Grove Homemakers, to present our February 25th International Day program, “China Tour”, at Hardin County Extension Auditorium. (In case of cancella-tion, our alternate date will be March 2, 2016). The program will begin at 1:00 pm and end at 3:00 pm. Please contact the Exten-sion Office at 270-765-4121 by Friday, February 19, 2016 so Anna will know how many will be in attendance. To all you wonderful poets and fantastic writers, please send in your creative writing to Julia Lainhart, KEHA Cultural Arts Chair-man (listed below) by March 1. I know there are many HCE Homemakers with great writing abilities. Rules can be found on the KEHA web site. If you prefer, bring your work to Fran at the Extension office and she will gladly forward everything for you. The Spring Bazaar is March 5. Notice that this is a change in the date from the one in your booklet. Lavinda Curl of West Point Homemakers, our Bazaar Chair, is asking each club to provide a $5 donation to help with purchase of food that will be sold at the Bazaar. Also, Lavinda is asking every club to send in 5-6 baked items and 2 clubs to volunteer to prepare a basket for the opportunity table. Please contact Lavinda if your club is interested in preparing a basket for the opportunity table at (502-922-4913). Remember, the proceeds from the Spring Bazaar will go to the Hardin County Extension Homemakers Association scholar-ship fund. If you are willing to work a 2 hour shift at the bazaar, please contact Renie Phillips (270-737-2730) or Carol Parrett (270-735-9028) to let them know what 2 hour shift you would prefer. Don’t forget to keep a record of your monthly reports, volunteer hours and the number of books read. There is a place in your HCEH Calendar book for you to record your number of volunteer hours and books read, and the Extension office has forms for monthly reports. I don’t know about you, but if I don’t write it down now, I will not remember it when it’s time to turn this information in later this year. Happy Valentine’s Day!
