WICHITA A’S MEETING MINUTES Minisa Park, January 22, 2018

Well Groundhog Day has come and gone and we are in for six more weeks of winter (according to Punxsutawney Phil) so that give us plenty of time to get the old A’s ready for the upcoming tour season. At the January meeting we started the planning process for the 2018 tour and activity schedule and many good activities are in the works. A big thank you to all that came with ideas and stepped up to lead our club and plan the details of these activities. I had the opportunity to attend the Model T winter clinic in Hutchinson with my son a few weeks ago and keep thinking this might be fun to do something like this with our club. There is a wealth of knowledge in the Wichita A’s and maybe we should consider putting together some technical events and spread some of the knowledge with the newer members. This could also be used as was well a way to attract others to our beloved Model A Fords and keep the hobby alive and well

Best Regards,

Randy Frazer, President

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

President Randy Frazier called the January 22, 2018 meeting of the Wichita A’s to order, recognized Randy Shelley as a new member ad announced that the rescheduled board meeting would be February 19 at 7:00 at the Ruggles’. Jim Nungesser moved and it was seconded and passed that the minutes from the previous meeting be approved as printed in the newsletter. Treasurer Jim Sharp gave an up-to-date treasurer’s report. Claudia Ellerman informed the club that new Medicare cards with new numbers (not social security numbers) would start coming out in April and to watch out for the people who will try and commit fraud. Bonita Graham reported on the death of Bo McHenry, Merv Criser and Dean Hurley. Dennis Schroeder will be having cancer surgery in February and Otto Praeger is home again after his third knee surgery. Brenda Broadhead reminded the members about February 17th Bunco Party and Potluck dinner at 6:00 at Minisa. Following refreshments provided by Orpha Eyers, Doris Jean Ludlow, Ruth Ann Prager, Rita Hoffmans, Jennie Rau, and Jane McLaughlin, tour leader Don Grabendike conducted the club’s yearly tour planning. The Model A Restorers Club has a Mileage Program available to MARC members only. The award recognition begins at 2,000 miles and the second award level is 5,000 miles. The participant receives a round blue plaque with the first mileage level and a replacement mileage tab is awarded thereafter. If you are interested in participating, read more about the pro-gram at www.MARCMileageProgram.com. Dick Fisher, the chairman for the MARC Mileage Program writes an article in the Model A News magazine. The car registration and mileage for 2017 needs to be turned in by February 2018. The mile-age as of December 31,2017 is the odometer reading that will need to be used. If you decided to participate in 2017 please send your 2017 odometer readings to me. Brenda Broadhead

BOARD AND HISTORICAL COMMITTEE

MARC DRIVING AWARDS

UPDATED EMAIL LIST

Maximum speed limits were abolished in five states in 1929, while 12 states raised the limit, with objective of speed-ing up traffic, according to reports received by the California State Automobile Association. Kansas, Tennessee, Ver-mont and Wisconsin prescribe a speed that is “reasonable and proper”. In effect, this means that speed is not to be con-sidered prima facie evidence of reckless driving, and such cases will be considered on their merits. With improved highways and added safety qualities in motor cars, the tendency throughout the country has been to speed up traffic, and each year finds legislature of various states fostering proposals to abolish maximum speed laws. SPEEDS LIMITS INCREASED States which increased their speed limits by action of the legislature during 1929 are California, from 25 miles per hour to 40; Delaware, from 30 to 35; Illinois, from 35 to 45; Minnesota, from 35 to 45’; Nebraska, from 35 to 45; Ne-vada, from 45 to 50; New Mexico, from 35 to 45; Ohio, from 35 to 45; Pennsylvania, from 35 to 40; South Dakota, from 25 to 40; Texas, from 35 to 45, and Virginia, from 35 to 45. A total of 11 states do not prescribe maximum speed laws. These are: Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Tennessee, Vermont, Wisconsin and Wyoming. The limits in other states range from 20 miles an hour in Massachusetts to 50 miles per hour in Nevada, with the ma-jority of states placing the limit at between 35 and 45 miles an hour.

From “The Evening News, San Jose California, Wednesday, August 27, 1930”: In the Automobile Section

We have updated our Wichita A’s Club email list. We send out information that may come up between newsletters and club meetings. If you would like to be on this ‘club list’ or would like to be taken off this list, let one of us know: Sheila Orr () Linda Kibbe () or Susan Stone () If you have something to send out, send it to one of these e-addresses. The ‘club list’ is NOT the same as the ‘email the newsletter list’ If you would like to receive the newsletter via email, please respond to Sheila, Linda or Susan. It is a great way to read the newsletter-all in color and you will receive it several days earlier then the printed one you get via postal mail.

The Board and the Historical Committee will be meeting February 19th at 7:00 at the Ruggles home. If you have any club historical items that you would like to have catalogued and saved, please get it to one of the members of the Historical Committee before the February meeting. Members of that committee are: Judy Sharp, JoAnn Bruce, and Tom Ruggles.

Page 10 Rumbleseat Review February 2018

“Back in the day” when Model A’s were used as regular daily transportation, electrical problems were more frequent during cold weather. This was due to decreased battery efficiency at low temperatures, more load on starters cranking cold engines, and more hours driving with lights with shorter daylight hours. “Winter Electrical Troubles” were addressed on pages 382

and 503 in the Ford Service Bulletins 1928-1931. These bulletins were issued monthly to dealers to address changes in parts,

service techniques, and frequent problems to be dealt with in service. They are available in reprint and all Model A owners should have a copy. The winter troubles generally were hard starting, dead batteries, and burned-out bulbs. The problems we experience today with occasional driving in winter come more from long periods of storage, and sometimes don’t appear until we start driving in the spring. The suggestions in the service bulletins were intended for cars using the original electrical system of course, but many would apply also to cars using alternators and 12 volt systems. The following is a summary of things to check, from the service bulletin and personal experience. Corrosion or looseness in electrical connections increases resistance and causes the generator of alternator to produce higher voltage to overcome that resistance, and that can burn out light bulbs. That resistance also reduces voltage output from the battery to the starter and ignition. And, for some reason it seems that corrosion occurs more in a car that is unused for long periods. To prevent this problem it is a good idea to annually clean the battery cable connections and check the ground strap connec-tion to the frame by loosening and re-tightening the bolt. A bad connection here can mimic a dead battery. Also remove the terminal box cover on the firewall, then loosen and re-tighten the nuts on the terminal posts. Do the same to the two wire connections on the bottom of the coil. If you are ambitious, remove the instrument panel and check the connections on the ammeter and ignition switch. If you are using the original generator system, also be sure to set the charging rate to the type of driving you will be doing. Refer to the service bulletins for that procedure. A good test: If you have a battery charger that indicates per cent charge, connect it once in a while to see what the charge level is in the battery. If it is above 90 your charging rate is ok. If it is 100, lower the rate slightly to prevent overcharging. That doesn’t address the winter storage problem with modern fuels, but as the old saying goes, “most carburetor problems are in the ignition system”. Tom Ruggles
