From the CEO....As the year begins with a full swing, we have many exciting opportunities and events for everyone!

This year, we begin our full series of music, offering an array of diverse performers from the region. Our upcoming musicians Paul McCandless and Motoshi Kosako offer a unique sound that will certainly impress you. Join us as a Patron member today and receive tickets for you and a guest for our entire music series this year.

Can you believe it’s almost time for the Lottery of the Arts? This year, we’ve moved our Lottery to Thursday, April 10. Yes, that’s correct-the event has moved to the spring to celebrate our artists in a favorite season-spring! Again, the Lottery will be juried by Diana Daniels Curator of Contemporary Art at the Crocker Art Museum, and this year, our top three artists will receive cash prizes. Good luck to you all!

There are opportunities for artists on the horizon-Art You Can Feel and America’s ClayFest deadline are just around the corner. Please don’t forget to apply.

As well, our Professional Artist Workshop series classes are back in session featuring a host of business building training; while the Susan Cooley-Gilliom Artist in Residency Teaching Program will feature workshops in clay sculpting from world famous Tip Toland. Don’t miss these opportunities to learn at Blue Line Arts.

Thank you for your continued support, I welcome you to stop by for a visit anytime!

Sincerely,

Julie Hirota

CURATOR’S CORNER

Blue Line Arts Magazine • bluelinearts.org • 13

Comments from a curator on making art: Do not be afraid to throw a piece away if it is not working. If artwork is so valuable that you can not change it or even destroy it, you can not grow as an artist. From personal experience, when a piece is reworked it is always better. Experimention is key to any professional artist’s career. New ideas and approaches are worth exploring as much as you can. Make several pieces on the same idea and see what happens.

“THE WORLD OF MONTE & ROBERT”A Review………Not withstanding the fact that both these artists have long and distinguished careers in their respective art disciplines, I wanted to focus on this particular two-man show.

As one enters the exhibition area, one is immediately struck by bright, impressive radiation of color and form.Even before one’s eyes focus on any particular object the viewer gets thrown into unfamiliar yet exciting shapes of Monte’s world!

Robert Armstrong’s work has a powerful magnetic quality that equally pulls one’s imagination.

Both artists use a clever mix of ‘psychology of perception’, Sarcasm, satire, and many other things, in a neat comical package.

Monte Wolverton’s work is very organic and seems to have roots in seventies underground culture, yet free from normal reality, a bit like a world under a microscope.

There are some very strong pieces which show the artist at the top of his form, like ‘Reticulum’, ‘The Twelve’ which is visually stunning…‘Zeen Trignom’ like some well-balanced virus, there’s ‘Urban Apotheosis’… all are explorations between reality and an alternate universe smoothly transiting between 2 dimensions and 3 dimensional representations.

...humor brought on by 2 urban spacemen”

Robert Armstrong’s work is powerful in that it deals with the external world via self-analysis,… add satire and comedy, one gets a powerful cocktail for communication.Robert has some very strong yet ‘tongue in cheek’ pieces such as ‘Ibso Facto Abstracto’.

Symbolically memorable and risqué ‘Fleshscape’… always good for stirring up peoples ‘set in stone’ conventions.

My favorite ‘The Rapture’ a true insight into the human condition, it was as if I was seeing a ‘Greek Tragedy’ performed in front of me! ‘Self portrait of the Artist in his Garret’ summed it all up to me…

I walked away from this show with a smile on my face, more extroverted and realizing I still had a sense of humor brought on by these two urban spacemen. -Zoran Peshich.

“AROUND THE WORLD” SPRING BREAK CAMP

WRITING POETRY THAT HAS POWER

Saturday, March 8th from 11AM-2PM

You’ve probably encountered a poem at some point that has struck you to the core. Or maybe you’ve written a few stanzas and afterwards said to yourself, “Wow, now where did that come from”? This workshop explores how to connect with that place within ourselves that is passionate, agitated, and alive in order to produce poetry that has intellectual range and emotional depth.

Affirming that strong poetry requires both craft and a bit of magic, the session will include both tips on how to produce clear, evocative writing and practices for getting in touch with your sources of inspiration. Ample time will be devoted to writing with the intent that you will come away with at least one or two new poems.
