THE FMF WAYFor over 45 years, Flemington Midget Football has provided instruction and support to thousands

of successful athletes. During that time, we have developed a unique culture, based around five

core beliefs that guide everything we do. “The FMF Way”, is what al lows us to successful ly

Team success is a by-product of coaches developing every athlete to their personal potential as

they progress through the program. Good teams become great when coaches view practice as an

opportunity to help their athletes grow and develop and when athletes view practice as an

opportunity to maximize their contribution to the team.

No one can win by themselves. We all have to trust and rely on each other for the team to be

successful. Both coaches & athletes must be prepared to do whatever is necessary for the good of

the team. Great teams are built on Teamwork, Dedication, Effort and Trust. . . lessons that wil l help

our athletes succeed in sports and in l ife.

I t is every coach’s responsibi l ity to teach the fundamental ski l ls and strategies of their sport to ALL

of their athletes. I t is every athlete’s responsibi l ity to put forth the effort to learn. I f an athlete gives

the effort, coaches must do whatever is necessary to help them learn and improve. Athletes that

progress through our program giving honest effort WILL enter high school with a competitive

advantage in skil ls and tactics

The health and safety of our athletes comes before everything else. Parents trust us with their

chi ldren; we must do everything in our power to return them safely. Athletes must let their coach

know if they are injured and must not return to action unti l they are ful ly ready.

Whenever an athlete competes as a Pioneer or Jr. Red Devil , they join a long tradition of

excellence. Many have come before us; we must honor their work by our actions. Many wil l come

after us; we must provide them with a program to be proud of. Once an athlete becomes part of

our FMF family, they wil l forever be welcome here.

Flemington Midget Football is a 501 (c)3 organization dedicated to improving the youth of Hunterdon Countythrough competitive Football and Cheer. One of the oldest youth football organizations in the area, from our

founding in 1 967 through 201 0, FMF teams were exclusively known as the Flemington Pioneers. Since 2009, wehave undergone tremendous growth and have reclaimed our original name of FMF. In 2009, we added our

extended season competition cheer team. In 201 0, with the addition our Hunterdon Jr. Red Devils teams, ourfootbal l offerings were expanded from four football teams participating in one league to ten football teamsparticipating in three leagues. In 201 3 we were able to offer, for the first time, an Extended Season Cheer

Training Squad for girls who were either too young or not yet prepared for the rigors of our Extended SeasonComp. Team. Thoughout al l of our recent growth, we have worked hard to stay true to our guiding principles ,"The FMF Way", and maintain our position as the premier youth football and cheer program in the central

Hunterdon region.

THEEDITORDear Parents and Guardians,

201 3 was an outstanding year for the entire FMF program. Our Pioneer Extended SeasonCheer team won their fourth consecutive UCA Northeast Region Championship and earned firstrunner-up at UCA Nationals in Orlando, missing out on first place by only one-half point. This isthe second time in three years our girls have narrowly missed bringing home the UCA NationalChampionship. Our Jr. Red Devil JV team made the Jr. Skylands Conference playoffs and wonour first ever JSFC playoff game. On behalf of the FMF Board of Trustees, I would l ike tocongratulate them and all of our graduates on a successful 201 3 and wish them continuedsuccess as they matriculate into High School and beyond.

As an organization we now turn our attention to 201 4. The board is already hard at workpreparing for our 47th season as the premier youth football and cheer program in the centralHunterdon region. Our aim for this year is to focus on improving the quality of the experience weprovide our famil ies while continuing our best in class focus on player safety.

This issue's cover story detai ls what we do to make sure our children's experiences with FMF isas safe as it is memorable. 201 4 wil l see an expansion of the USA Football "Heads Up!" tackl ingmodel at al l levels of our program in order to reduce the possibi l ities of head to head contact andinjury during tackling. "Head's Up! ' footbal l was developed by USA Football in conjunction withthe NFL Players Association and coaches. I invite you to learn more about "Heads Up!" footbal lat www.usafootball .com.

This year, we are proud to remain on the cutting edge of player safety. In 201 4, we wil l bepartnering with ImPACT, the world leader in concussion management systems, to provide all ofour JV and Varsity footbal l players and cheerleaders with a free ImPACT baseline concussiontest. ImPACT testing, available beginning at age 1 0, is the most scientifical ly researchedconcussion management tool on earth and has become the standard in neurological testing forconcussion management in recent years. The testing our athletes wil l receive beginning thisyear is the same testing used by club teams, high schools, col leges and professional sportsteams around the world. Though no amount of testing, coaching or studying can completelyel iminate the possibi l ity of injury while playing sports, using ImPACT testing is an crucial stepforward in the treatment of head injuries and wil l ensure that athletes do not exacerbate theproblem by returning to action too soon. We have also put in extensive work this offseason to improve our branding in an effort to give themany branches of our organization a common brand to ral ly around. We have developed a newFMF logo and added a new Pioneer Cheer spirit mark for our programs. The new FMF logo wasdesigned to be simple and memorable while embracing all facets of our expanded organization.The new Pioneer Cheer spirit mark was developed to give all of our cheer teams an elegant andmemorable symbol to call their own. I think the designs hit on all counts and am excited foreveryone to see them used throughout the organization going forward and for years to come.

Lastly, onl ine registration is being final ized as I write this with an expected "Go Live" of February1 5. Cheer famil ies, please note that we have had to institute new registration guidel ines (seepage 1 9 in this issue) due to the overwhelming popularity of our program. As always, we appreciate the support from our famil ies as we work not only to remain thepremier youth football and cheer program in the central Hunterdon area, but to improve everyyear. I t is our goal to provide each child with an exceptional experience and memories that wil llast a l ifetime. We look forward to spending another outstanding season with the FMF Family.

The game of football has changed radical ly fromthe one we played as kids. Today, even at the

youth level, players are bigger, faster and betterprepared than in the past. At FMF, we continue towork to create a better, safer game to protect ourchildren as well as the future of our sport. Football isa physical game. While we can never completelyremove the risks inherent to the sport, we areconstantly working to minimize the potential dangersas much as possible. When a parent brings theirchi ld to practice or a game, our first responsibi l ity asan organization is to return them safely. We realizethat responsibi l ity and take it very seriously.

At FMF, player safety begins before the team everhits the field. Al l of our coaches have completed theRutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y (SportsAwareness for EducatingToday's Youth) course and arecertified by the RutgersUniversity Youth SportsResearch Council . In addition,al l of our coaches havepassed extensive backgroundchecks and are allowed by the state of NJ to bearound children in a supervisory role. In 201 4, wewil l begin partnering with ImPACT, the world leaderin concussion management, to provide all of ourfootbal l players and cheerleaders age 1 0 and overwith a free ImPACT baseline concussion test.ImPACT testing is the most scientifical ly researchedconcussion management tool on earth and hasbecome the standard in neurological testing forconcussion management in recent years. Thetesting our athletes wil l receive is the same testingused by club teams, high schools, col leges andprofessional sports teams around the world.

Once on the field, our commitment to safety extendsto our coaches teaching the latest blocking andtackling techniques, designed and proven to be bothsafe and effective. All of the Head Coaches runningour teams have been trained and certified by USAFootball (the youth football development partner ofthe NFL). As part of their training, our coaches havebeen taught not only to know what the latesttechniques are, but also how to teach them so that

the players understand both the "how" and the"why". When a player is unsure of why he is beingasked to use a certain technique, it is less l ikely thathe wil l comply, even if it is to his benefit.Recently, concussions have become a hot buttontopic in the news. Though a recent study1

published by the Mayo Clinic in Apri l 201 2 showsempirical ly that impacts received through football donot increase a player'schances of developingneurodegenerativeissues, the issue ofconcussions issomething we takeextremely seriously. All ofour head coaches haveundergone training not just on concussionawareness, but also on concussion AVOIDANCE.Avoiding concussions altogether by teaching safeand proper technique is the first l ine of defenseagainst concussions. This season, as a USAFootball affi l iate, FMF wil l be ful ly adopting the"Heads Up!" tackl ing program in order to help makethe game safer for our players. In the wake ofrecent media reports, coaches and teams aroundthe country are adopting "Heads up!" tackl ing as asafer, more effective technique in order to reducethe possibi l ities of head to head contact duringtackling. "Heads Up!” tackl ing was developed bythe USA Football 's Tackle Advisory Committee inconjunction with NFL Health and Safety. We inviteyou to learn more about the "Heads Up!" Our coacheshave been trained by representatives from Riddelland USA Football to fit your child's helmet properly.FMF is proud to provide every player with the youthversion of the Riddell Revolution family of helmetsexclusively (Revolution and Revolution Speed). TheRevolution was the first helmet designed specifical lyin an attempt to reduce concussions, the RevolutionSpeed improved upon the original technology. In arecent study2 done at Virginia Tech University onadult footbal l helmets, Riddell Revolution andRevolution Speed models were rated 4 and 5 stars

minimizing and even preventing concussions. Weissue every player an age-appropriate mouth guardin order to both prevent dental damage AND toreduce the risk of concussions. Any player withbraces wil l require, and wil l be issued, a braces-specific mouth guard.

Even with al l that we do to keep the game offootball safe for our players, we realize thataccidents and injuries can happen, and we takesteps to be prepared. In the event an injury doesoccur, FMF keeps a certified EMT on staff, presentat al l games and on call for al l practices. We arealso the only program in the area to own anAutomated External Defibri l lator (AED) along withthe proper youth sized AED paddles required for itsuse.

The health and safety of the players entrusted to usis an enormous responsibi l ity, one that FMF hasalways and wil l continue to take very seriously. Weare proud of our current efforts but are constantlylooking for new ways to improve. Our goal is toprovide l ifelong lessons and memories to ourchildren while helping to keep our sport vibrant,healthy and safe.

respectively, making them among the best helmetsavailable on the market for concussion safety.

I t has always been our policy at FMF that any FMF-issued helmet used in any game or practice beprofessionally reconditioned, inspected and re-certified by our reconditioning vendor (at our cost)before being put back into service. Thereconditioning vendor we use is the same one thatreconditions and re-certifies the helmets of HighSchools, Colleges and even Professional teams inthe area. Many people don't real ize that footbal lhelmets can and do expire. Unaware of this fact,some organizations may put helmets into use thathave outl ived their useful l ife. At FMF, it has alwaysbeen our policy that once a helmet reaches itsexpiration date it is removed from service,destroyed, and replaced with a new one. Becauseof this policy, we replaced over 20 helmets last year(at a cost of over $200 each) and wil l replaceanother 30+ helmets this year.

While we pride ourselves on providing our playersthe best equipment available, even the bestdesigned equipment in the world isn't safe if itdoesn't fit properly. Our staff has been trained toproperly fit al l equipment so that their safetyfeatures are uti l ized to the ful lest. As an example,improper fitting shoulder pads (either too large ortoo small), can lead to increased chances ofshoulder and neck injuries. Bigger pads don'talways mean safer pads. We realize thatsomething as simple as mouth guards are animportant, but often overlooked, piece of safetyequipment. They do more than just protect teeth;they have been proven to have an important role in

JAMES L. "JIMMY" WILSONOur Number One Fan

Jimmy Wilson left a lasting memory with everyone who visited Pioneer Field throughout the 1 980's and early1 990's. While his wheelchair kept him from taking part on the field, it couldn't keep him from being part of theteam. At the end of every summer, l ike the changing of the seasons, Jimmy was there to usher in footbal l

season. He was as much a part of the Pioneer family as the crack of pads echoing through the crisp autumn airand the roar of the crowd on game day. For close to a decade, Jimmy never missed a game, indeed, he nevermissed a practice in al l of his time with us. His love for the game and for the team was infectious and wil l be

forever remembered. In 1 994, after his passing, the organization recognized Jimmy's contribution to our familyby naming the playing field after him and retiring the number one jersey, in memory of their #1 fan.

JOSEPH YASHKAS6/4/85 - 4/29/00 : Forever a Pioneer

Joey Yashkas was a Pioneer through and through. He played football for the program and was a greatteammate and a key member of the team from his peewee days through his eigth grade season. As much ashe loved football and his teammates, Joey also loved racing motorcycles. I t was this love that took Joey from usfar too soon. After the tragic motorcycle accident that took his l ife in 2000, the organization retired his number55 and decreed that in remembrance of Joey and Jimmy, their numbers 1 and 55 be painted in the corner of the

endzone for every home game so that they wil l always be part of our family.
