Located on the outskirts of Rome at 3940 Morton Bend Road, TSB Loss Control Consultants Inc. might be one of the coolest places you never knew existed. TSB Loss Control Consultants is an emergency service training organization situated on 328 acres of land. It is a progressive emergency services training organization providing comprehensive training for emergency response personnel and those responsible for managing, organizing and/or directing emergency response activities. Translation: They train workers in fire fighting, hazardous materials response, technical rescue, emergency medical services and so much more. “What makes TSB that much better is that the training we provide to each group here is unique,” said Curtis Doyle, President and CEO. “There are no generic programs here; each group that enrolls has a program designed specifically for the needs of that group.” The learning environment is something Brad Doyle, Director of Operations, cited for TSB’s success. “We have a great instructor-to-trainee ratio. It’s sometimes as low as 1:2 instructors to students and never as high as 1:5. The low instructor/trainee ratios helps each trainee get the instruction and attention they deserve.” The plethora of training activities available makes great use of all of TSB’s resources. The area is equipped with search and rescue towers, underground tunnels that can be flooded for confined space

rescues, a multi-level sprinkler protected burn building, and classrooms for traditional teaching and emergency medical response training. “We get people here from all over the world,” said Curtis Doyle. “We’ve had clients come from as far as Germany, China, Korea, Australia, Puerto Rico and Trinidad. I truly believe the training we offer here in Rome can’t be matched anywhere else.” With all the water that is needed for their fire training, TSB is very active in trying to lower their environmental footprint. “We have a great filter system that reuses the water again and again,” said Brad Doyle. “It captures the rainwater and we use that, too.” How was it named? TSB was named after Curtis Doyle’s three children, Tara, Summer and Brad. Georgia Trend Magazine recently named Redmond Regional Medical Center as the “Top Medium-Sized Hospital” in Georgia. The magazine published its 2012 list of Georgia’s Top Hospitals in the December issue. The recognition was based on publicly available information through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services which include “quality of care, patient satisfaction, mortality and readmission statistics and data on hospital-acquired infections and conditions.” “The Redmond team of doctors, nurses, technicians and support staff are truly exceptional,” said John Quinlivan, Redmond Chief Executive Officer. “Our recognition as Georgia’s best medium-sized hospital is a reflection of our staff’s dedication to their patients and commitment to their professions. I can’t tell you how proud I am to be associated with them.”

Beemal Shah, Chief Operating Officer for Redmond, attributed the recognition to the patient-centered culture. “The patient is always the main priority. Combine that with a team-oriented staff and you get something really special here.” In addition to medium-sized hospitals (151-399 beds), the magazine also ranked Teaching Hospitals, Large Hospitals (more than 400 beds), Small Hospitals (fewer than 150 beds) and Critical Access Hospitals (rural community hospitals). “Redmond’s top ranking is the result of a comprehensive analysis by Georgia Trend Magazine of hospital quality and service data. Our

patients increasingly use this information when they select Redmond as their hospital of choice. It likely plays a strong factor in the growth of patients we’ve seen from outside our area who come to Redmond for

their healthcare provider,” said Quinlivan. In 2012, Redmond was also named one of the nation’s top performers on Key Quality Measures by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in America, for exemplary performance in using evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to improve care for certain conditions including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care. Find out more information on Redmond Regional Medical Center in the Chamber’s business directory located at www.romega.com.

Small Business Spotlight:

“We are Committed to Decreasing Patient’s Pain.” This is the stated goal of DermaTran Health Solutions of Rome. DermaTran, a compounding pharmacy that focuses on topical pain control, opened its doors in May 2012. Lisa Harris, RPh, Pharmacist-in-Charge, said part of DermaTran’s mission was to decrease opiate usage. “Our ultimate goal is to change the way doctors treat chronic pain.” How does it work? DermaTran creates individually prescribed topically applied creams. They address difficult-to-treat pain conditions by applying multiple classes of medicine directly to the affected area, because chronic pain is a result of numerous processes that need to be addressed. The small amount of medication

reaching the bloodstream minimizes the threat of serious adverse events or addiction. Harris said the environment at DermaTran is much different than other pharmacies. “It’s very different because we’re treating people who have done the hydrocodones and the oxycodones and still have issues. This is an alternative for them,” Harris said. “We have so many patients that call us back and say they are so thankful for an alternative for pain that works for them.” An additional distinction is the patient surveying process and patient assessment nurses working to improve the patient’s outcomes. Rob Gussenhoven, PharmD, a licensed pharmacist in Alabama and California and owner of DermaTran, has been compounding for over

Small Business Spotlight:

three decades. “DermaTran is a compounding pharmacy that meets needs that can’t be met by commercially available products,” said Gussenhoven. “What we’re really doing is customizing specific creams to the patients’ conditions.” Gussenhoven chose to focus on the topical delivery of medication for treating pain because he believes technology advancements have revolutionized the industry. “We’re utilizing technology with a clinical research organization to do data analytics to better determine and define what creams work best for what conditions and what type of side effects we may be seeing,” Gussenhoven said. “We’re taking a much more scientific approach to the treatment of pain. We are treating pain at the source of the pain as opposed to the perception of pain

within the brain,” Gussenhoven said. Initial patient surveys as reported by Patient Outcome Analytics are showing that you don’t have the typical side effect of drowsiness. In fact, only 2.2% of patients are showing any adverse side effects, and all are relatively minor such as rashes or irritation. “DermaTran does not mass produce its topical creams, but each cream is created by a specific prescription for each patient. You always have to have the triad in place, the pharmacy, physician and patient,” Gussenhoven said. DermaTran, headquartered in West Rome, employs 155 people over three locations in three states. Find out more information on DermaTran in the Chamber’s business directory located at www.romega.com.

Newcomer ProfileDr. Jeff Bearden

After months of deliberation and sifting through 30 serious candidates, Rome City Schools selected Dr. Jeff Bearden as their new school superintendent. Bearden’s career began at age 21 when he joined the Air Force and was stationed in northern Maine. He coached basketball and was hired to teach Language Arts. It was then he realized he wanted

to continue to work with young people. Before moving to Fayette County, GA, he was superintendent of the Maine

School Administrative District 35 and was an adjunct professor at Nova Southeastern University in

Florida. He later served as superintendent in Fayette County.

Bearden’s new job is a complex one. As superintendent of Rome

City Schools, he works to manage budgets, monitor the construction

of the Anna K. Davie School, oversee the overall employment of the schools and be heavily involved in city school transportation proposals.“It’s a multi-faceted job,” said Bearden. “Each day is different but the quality of the education programs will always be a top

priority.” One of Bearden’s top goals is to see the integration of technology in classrooms. “We should capitalize on what young people know about technology and use that to better education. Technology is becoming more and more accessible while students are becoming that much more tech savvy. Technology can make education more relevant for kids. At the least, it is a conversation I look forward to having with students and the community.”Welcome to Rome ,Dr. Bearden!February 2013 12

Formerly known as the Spectrum of Technology Symposium, now rebranded and reworked, Confluence will be the eighth event of its kind held in Rome. This symposium was created by the Future Industries Initiative of the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce. This initiative is the result of Rome-Floyd 20/20, our community-wide strategic plan, and serves to identify innovation- and technology-related opportunities for the community. The vision of Confluence is to help create a culture of innovation & creative problem solving: through exposure to inspiring ideas, businesses, and processes, by bringing together leaders, technologists, and entrepreneurs and showcasing new ideas and experiences. 2013 Chairman of the Board Doc Kibler, State Mutual Insurance Company, felt Confluence is poised to be the premiere technology-focused business event in all of Georgia this year. “The group of speakers we have here is phenomenal!” stated Kibler. “Just listening to a single presenter is worth the cost of the ticket, but we are truly lucky to have such a unique and accomplished group.” Keynote speaker Chris Anderson, former Editor-in-Chief of Wired magazine, joined the panel because of his connection with the mission of Confluence. “My hope is that society can become a culture of innovation and problem solving,” said Anderson. “Confluence has that same mission.”For more information please visit www.romega.com.

The CongratulationsCouple Who Fell In Love AtYoung ProfessionalsOf Rome

“It was in November of 2011, we had both recently moved to Rome and were in similar places in life. I was still getting to know Rome when my friend of eight years, and Sam’s co-worker, kept telling me about this guy I should meet. I kept dismissing it until she convinced me to go to one of the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce’s ‘Young Professionals’ events. She convinced him to go as well and that’s when I saw him. I noticed him as soon as he walked in the door. He made his way to

my table and our eyes met. I knew right then and there he was the guy for me. We spent the entire night talking and enjoying the event, it was a night that forever changed our lives. Within four months we were engaged and married shortly after that.” - Crissy Duncan on meeting and eventually marrying Sam Duncan, GA Power, Plant Hammond, the man she met at Young Professionals of Rome.

Congratulations Hillshire Brands for completing 2,000,000 man hours without any lost time accidents!

Retired Rome Coca-Cola executive W. Frank Barron, Jr. was presented with the H.G. “Pat” Pattillo Honorary Membership Award from Leadership Georgia at the 40th Annual Leadership Georgia Gala and Alumni Awards. Mr. Barron is only the third recipient of the award. It is presented to an individual who has never participated in a Leadership Georgia class but has supported the program immensely. The Leadership Georgia program deals with major issues confronting our state.

A former Greater Rome Chamber Chairman of the Board, Mr. Barron applauded the program’s mission by stating, “I’ve always been a strong supporter of Leadership Georgia. It was conceived to take young leaders in the state and introduce them to the intricacies of state government, private industry, tourism, and places of historical significance.” “So many leaders and innovators in Rome have gone through the program,” Barron said. “Overall it’s been a phenomenal thing!”

In 1975 Cook’s Pest Control joined the Rome community. With a goal of providing great customer service and superior pest elimination, Cook’s has maintained its presence as a top quality pest control service. Cook’s headquarters is undergoing a complete remodel, allowing for more rooms and a huge aesthetic upgrade. Roger Lemaster, District Manager, has enjoyed seeing the transformation of the building. “It was really just a basic building before, but now we’ve upgraded it to have much more space, and changed out the roof completely,” said Lemaster.

The staff is currently stationed in the Termite Control building, an area they will convert to a storage unit for equipment after the remodel has finished. Lemaster said he knows the quality of the building will now match the quality of service they provide. “When a customer calls us we want them to know they called a company they can trust. A business like this can’t stay open for this long if customers are walking away unhappy.” Emily Tate, Office Specialist, cites the ever-changing work environment for her longevity with the company. “Every day here is a little different. Ultimately we are a great team here and it’s about helping the customers.” Cook’s Pest Control offers $25.00 off initial pest control service and 10% off Sentricon Installation for Chamber members.
