RACC N NATION Now in its 30th season NATURE takes viewers to urban settings and beneath the ocean to train the spotlight on some of the most intelligent and innovative members of the animal kingdom with two new episodes this month. Raccoon Nation (February 8) looks at the expanding population of raccoons in large cities such as Chicago, New York, and Toronto — the raccoon capital of the world. Using night-vision cameras, scientists set out to learn about the animals’ hidden, intimate world. With busy, nimble paws, these nocturnal creatures can

do what other would-be urban animals can’t — open doors, get into attics, and raid secured trash cans. This is one reason they flourish in such densely populated areas. Raccoon populations have grown 20-fold in North American cities during the last 70 years. There are now 50 times more raccoons living in Toronto than in the surrounding rural areas. Unfortunately, there are real risks associated with urban raccoons. Chicago, for example, is fighting outbreaks of parasites carried and transmitted by the raccoons that have overrun their city.

Ocean Giants (February 22) goes beneath the ocean to gain new insights into the lives of whales and dolphins in this three-part series. Two of the world’s top underwater cameramen — Doug Allan and Didier Noirot — film many encounters. Teams of intrepid scientists equipped with the latest technology make breakthroughs in their understanding of these intelligent life forms — breakthroughs that may safeguard whales’ and dolphins’ survival. All three one-hour segments — Giant

Lives, Deep Thinkers and Voices of the Sea — air back-to-back beginning at 7:00 p.m. MT/PT. Three repeats also air in February: Wolverine: Chasing the Phantom (February 1), The Himalayas (February 15), and Echo: An Elephant to Remember (February 29).Sponsors: Adam & Sean Solomon, Boise Co-op, Idaho Conservation League, Potlatch Corporation, PPS Company, St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital, St. Luke’s Heart, St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center, William R. Clinton, the latest in the critically acclaimed series of presidential biographies, highlights this month’s lineup. This 16th installment of AMERICAN EXPERIENCE’s Presidents Collection explores the story of an American

president who rises from a turbulent childhood in Arkansas to become one of the most successful politicians in modern American history and one of the most complex

and conflicted characters ever to stride

across the public stage. The two-part documentary airs Monday and Tuesday, February 20 and 21, from 8:00-10:00 p.m. MT/PT. The film follows Bill Clinton, the 43rd president, across his two terms as he confronts some of the key forces that would shape the future, including partisan political warfare, and domestic and international terrorism. Most memorably, it explores how Clinton’s conflicted character makes history, even as it enrages his enemies and confounds his friends. The film features access to scores of Clinton insiders as well as interviews with dozens of journalists, members of the Republican opposition, childhood friends, staffers from Clinton’s years as governor of Arkansas, and biographers. “William Jefferson Clinton is a lightning rod in American history,” says Mark Samels, executive producer.

“It’s hard to find anyone who is neutral about the man or his presidency. The complex dynamic between his public accomplishments and his personal foibles makes him endlessly fascinating.” Also this month, The Amish (February 28) looks at this insular religious community through a tragic perspective: the aftermath of the 2006 shooting in a schoolhouse in Pennsylvania’s Amish community that killed five girls and injured five more. Just hours after the shooting, Amish community members visited the gunman’s family to offer forgiveness. The events horrify the nation for the senseless brutality of the shootings and leave many haunted by the victimized group’s startling response. Filmed over the course of a year, The Amish answers many questions Americans have about this religious group. With rare access to the Amish built on patience and hard-won trust, the film’s producers examine this profoundly attention-averse group and conduct the first television interview with one of the parents of the murdered schoolgirls. Encore presentations this month are Freedom Riders (February 7) and Tupperware (February 14).

This show about how to deal with a bully runs for one hour rather than the usual 30 minutes. Miss Power (featuring the voice of Jane Lynch of Glee fame) is a new super hero in town who arrives with her marmoset-like accomplice, Colonel Giggle Cheeks. But is she really a super hero — or a super villain? It quickly becomes clear that Miss Power is a bully who uses mean words against others, including WordGirl. When WordGirl tries

to stand up to Miss Power, she is belittled and

stripped of her super hero star. But Huggy comes to the rescue,

showing WordGirl a book full of

secret battle moves from her home planet, Lexicon. Will WordGirl be able to defeat Miss Power,

without sinking to her level, and save the city? Stay tuned.

On this month’s D4K, host Joan Cartan-Hansen and her guest scientists will answer questions about predators. Cartan-Hansen will be joined by Gregg Losinski, regional conservation educator for the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, and Jon Rachael, Fish and Game’s state wildlife manager. Predators are animals that eat other animals. They don’t have to be big, but they do have to be really lucky to survive. Students can watch the show over the

air or on the D4K website. They can send questions through email to [email protected], fax them in before the show to (208) 373-7245, or call in live during the program to (800) 973-9800. Shortly after the show, students can view a Web-only video with Losinski and Rachael answering questions that were not part of the on-air broadcast. The D4K website (idahoptv.org/D4K) provides educational materials throughout the season. Students can access more information and facts about each topic,

links, reading lists, a glossary, podcasts of programs, video shorts, full episodes and special D4K Web-exclusive programming.

Roadtrip Nation and SAT® Hit the Road to Idaho “So, what do you want to do with your life?” is one question that students across the U.S. have struggled to answer. To empower students to map their interests to their future pathways, the SAT® and Roadtrip Nation have teamed up to help high school students explore avenues and opportunities that they never knew existed. During the months of March and April, before Idaho SAT® School Day on April 18, Roadtrip Nation’s team of Roadies and the Green RV will hit the road to high schools across Idaho to bring awareness and excitement to students about the college process and how the SAT® can open doors to future opportunities. To get updates of when Roadtrip Nation will be in your neck of the woods, follow the team on Twitter@RoadtripNation and facebook.com/RoadtripNation. Learn more about Idaho SAT® School Day at sat.collegeboard.org/idaho.

It begins in October 2010 with the discovery of mammoth bones made while a bulldozer operator is working on the expansion of Ziegler Reservoir near Snowmass Village, Colorado. It becomes, according to Evan Hadingham, NOVA’s senior science editor, the discovery of a lifetime. The end result is Ice Age Death Trap, an hourlong NOVA/National Geographic production about this major discovery. The project becomes a race against time because the developers whose bulldozer unearthed the first bones cannot go off schedule. “What is unique about this discovery is the amount of fossils found,” says Hadingham in an interview with Idaho Public

Television, “and what made it such a challenge for both the archaeologists and our [film crew] was the small window of opportunity because of the [impending] development.” Soon after the initial discovery, a fossil dig goes into full swing with Denver Museum of Nature and Science scientists and their team of experts descending on the site near Aspen. They unearth more mammoths, mastodons, a ground sloth, gigantic ice age bison, a small deer and a salamander along with well-preserved plant matter, ancient insects and invertebrates. The excavation reveals an exceptionally preserved ice age ecosystem. The museum’s scientists contact NOVA. “After the first remarkable discovery in the fall of 2010, the Denver Museum

told us, ‘We have right here on our doorstep what looks like one of the most incredible discoveries of all time,’” says Hadingham. “Normally archaeologists and paleontologists are lucky if they come across ice age discoveries of more than a

dozen or so specimens in good condition.” In May 2011 a scientific team of 37 experts from 18 institutions from the United States, Canada, Spain and England return to the dig site. In just seven weeks, crews dig up more than 4,800 fossils and identify 20 different vertebrate animals from the site, including several large mammals: American mastodon, the most prevalent large animal at the site; parts of at least 10 giant bison; parts of at least four ground sloths; parts of at least three mammoths; along with deer and a horse. For Hadingham, whose background is in archaeology, it was an opportunity to document “certainly one of the exquisite fossil discoveries in the Americas.”Sponsors: Boise Co-op, INL/Battelle, Monsanto, Power Engineers, St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital, St. Luke’s Heart

Online Service Helps Idahoans ‘Scout’ for

Information A new online resource provided by

Idaho Public Television for learners of all ages again demonstrates that the statewide public television system is more than just TV stations.

Through a partnership with the Idaho Commission for Libraries (ICfL), thousands of multimedia resources are now available via IdahoPTV’s Scout learning portal, part of ICfL’s Libraries Linking Idaho service (LiLI.org). LiLI.org provides an array of educational services free to all Idaho residents. In the Scout, Classroom Edition, Idaho teachers and students have immediate access to more than 14,000 research-based instructional resources — including videos, interactive sites, images, audio files, mobile apps, lesson plans and worksheets. The Scout, Idaho Edition, offers online access to full-length video productions by Idaho Public Television. Users can view programs that celebrate Idaho’s people and places, examine the Gem State’s history, and analyze some of the issues it faces today. Funding for Scout is provided in part by the ICfL, Idaho Public Television, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Broadband USA. The Scout Online Video Collections is at http://www.scout.lili.org/.

The award-winning British series dissects some of the fiercest and fearsome creatures on the planet this month. Great White Shark (February 1) uncovers the amazing array of senses the shark possesses, including the ability to detect the electro-magnetic field given off by other creatures. Experts investigate the origins of sharks’ infamous killing bite and explain how their teeth and jaws evolved from their outer skin and gill arches. Big Cats (February 8) looks at a lion and a tiger. From the outside, the two look very different, but once their skins are removed, even the experts find it hard to tell them apart.

Three new documentaries delve into the history, culture and contributions of African-Americans in celebration of Black History Month. The first two films provide intimate looks at civil rights movement leaders. The final presentation features a black filmmaker’s campaign to end Black History Month. Filmmaker Sharon La Cruise spends four years examining the life and times of Daisy Bates: First Lady of Little Rock (February 2). When Bates (1914-1999) is a baby, her mother is raped and murdered, and her father

leaves the child with friends. She grows up with strong views of justice and civil rights. By the early 1940s, Bates and her

husband publish a crusading newspaper in Little Rock. By the 1950s, she is president of the Arkansas NAACP. In 1957 she mentors the nine black students attempting to enroll at Little Rock Central High School and becomes a public figure in the conflict that pits a U.S. president

against a governor. A cache of 16mm footage in the basement of Swedish Television chronicles the Black Power movement. Director

Goran Olsson and co-producer Danny Glover present The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 (February 9) from films

made by Swedish journalists. Stokely Carmichael voices the concept of Black Power, but he also interviews his mother

about her experiences with poverty and discrimination. Here are the voices and images of Angela Davis,

Louis Farrakhan and ordinary black Americans. The impressionistic visual record of recent

history includes present-day reflections on that history. Shukree Hassan Tilghman, an African-American filmmaker, is campaigning to end Black History Month. His film More Than a Month (February 16) explores the state of black history education in American public schools, and the effect of “history months” on the formation of American racial identity. With tongue-in-cheek humor, Tilghman uses cinema verite shooting, first person narration, expert and man-on-the-street interviews, archival

materials, and graphics to reveal the issues.

This Sundance Film Festival selection for 2012 examines the concept of “neoslavery” and challenges one of America’s most cherished assumptions: the belief that slavery in this country ended with Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. Even as slavery comes to an end, the South creates new forms of involuntary servitude, including convict leasing, debt slavery and peonage, which brutalize and ultimately circumscribe the lives of hundreds of thousands of African Americans well into the 20th century. It is a system in which men, often guilty of no crime at all, are arrested, compelled to work without pay, repeatedly bought and sold, and coerced to do the bidding of masters. Actor Laurence Fishburne narrates the film, which is based on Douglas A. Blackmon’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book of the same name.

SLAVERY

Airs Monday, February 6, at 10:00 p.m. MT/PT

One of several programs in February profiling the rich history, culture and contributions of African-Americans in honor of Black History Month, this new documentary tells the story of William Still, an unsung hero of the Underground Railroad. A free black man as well as an abolitionist and historian, Still is determined to get as many runaways as he could across the U.S. border to Canada. The Philadelphia resident accepts delivery of transported crates containing human “cargo” and helps smuggle them to northern cities and Canada. Still risks everything to keep detailed records of individuals’ stories, eventually compiling them into a book recognized as the most authentic account of the inner workings of the Underground Railroad and the plights of those who used it. unDerGrOunD raILrOaD: THe WILLIaM STILL STOrY uses these powerful diaries, evocative re-enactments, historical perspectives and moving accounts from the day to re-create one of North America’s greatest sagas.

During one weekend in 2008, 37 people are shot in Chicago, seven of them fatally. Chicago becomes the emblem of America’s inner-city violence and gang problem. This television premiere of the award-winning documentary The Interrupters tells the story of three dedicated “violence interrupters” — Ameena Matthews, Cobe Williams and Eddie Bocanegra. With bravado, humility and even humor, they work to protect their Chicago communities from the violence they themselves once perpetrated. Their work and their insights are informed by their own journeys, which, as each of them points out, defy easy characterization. From acclaimed producer-director Steve James (Hoop Dreams) and best-selling author-turned-producer Alex Kotlowitz (There Are No Children Here), this film is an unusually intimate journey into the stubborn persistence of violence in our cities. The New York Times says the film “has put a face to a raging epidemic and an unforgivable American tragedy.” The Interrupters follows Ameena, Eddie and Cobe over the course of a year as they attempt to intervene in situations before they turn violent. The film captures not only the trio’s work, but reveals their own inspired journeys from crime to hope and, ultimately, redemption.

Some Idahoans look for cold-weather activities that require extra “Winter Grit.” “All of the stories in this show have two things in common, adventure and grit,” OuTDOOr IDaHO producer Sauni Symonds says. “I came up with the name for the show after watching a horse and rider race down a snow-packed track pulling a skier by a single rope. It takes grit to do that.” On Copper Mountain, Symonds and director/videographer Jay Krajic capture backcountry ski guides in the Sawtooths doing avalanche assessment and demonstrating how to stay safe on the steep slopes. Cowboys and skiers chase away the winter doldrums together near Bellevue on a snow-packed track. Reaching speeds of 40-some miles per hour, skiers at the end of ropes behind the horses try to beat the clock while racing around gates and jumps to reach the finish line. This 2010 Tony Award winner for Best New Musical turns the radio dial back to the 1950s. White DJ Huey Calhoun (Chad Kimball) loves good music, transcending race lines and airwaves. Soulful black singer Felicia Farrel (Montego Glover) seeks to break out of segregated clubs. Together they help open a new world of sound — a golden era of early rock ’n’ roll. But as things heat up, whether the world is ready for their music (or their love) is put to the test. This high-definition film, made during live performances at the Shubert Theater in New York City, features original cast members. The driving score by Bon Jovi founding member David Bryan and lyrics and book by Joe DiPietro propel the story. The show is filled with high-octane dancing, songs that capture the era, soaring emotions and roof-raising rock ’n’ roll. Reviewer Michael Kuchwara, Associated Press, says: “Take a deep breath as the curtain rises because the exuberance doesn’t stop.” Charles Isherwood of The New York Times also praises the performance. “David Bryan evokes the powerhouse funk of James Brown, the hot guitar riffs of Chuck Berry, the smooth harmonies of the Temptations, [and] the silken, bouncy pop of the great girl groups of the period,” he writes.

More Than a Month, a film that questions whether Black History Month should end, is the Community Cinema presentation Tuesday, February 21, in Boise and Pocatello. African-American filmmaker Shukree Hassan Tilghman is on a personal campaign to end the commemoration as he examines what it means to be an American, to fight for one’s rightful place in the American landscape — the universal endeavor to discover one’s self. Using humor, cinema verite, man-on-the-street interviews, visits with experts and dramatizations, the film is a first-person narrative of his quest to understand the implications of Black History Month. Exploring history itself — how it is treated, how it is valued — shapes the narrative of the film. The 60-minute film is followed by a 30-minute facilitated discussion at each location, beginning at 5:30 p.m.: •BoiseStateUniversityStudentUnion Building, HATCH AB, in Boise •IdahoStateUniversityPondStudent Union, Bengal Theater, in Pocatello
