Idaho Public Television’s hour-long IDAHO REPORTS returns with host Thanh Tan to chronicle

the action, follow the topics and analyze the results of the first session of the 61st Idaho Legislature. “This year, IDAHO REPORTS will closely track budget issues, especially since the state is facing a potential $340 million shortfall,” Tan says. “Unlike previous years, the state no longer has rainy day funds or federal stimulus dollars to fall back on. We’ll explain where changes will be felt in government services. It will be fascinating to see whether the Idaho Legislature cuts spending, raises taxes, cuts taxes, or attempts to do a combination of all those things.” Tan talks each week with a panel of

lawmakers about legislative activities, as well as a panel of reporters and experts.

This season, the show features two new segments. Perspectives

goes outside the studio to highlight two political insiders

who are on opposite sides of an issue. Ask Idaho Reports takes requests from viewers to answer questions about the Legislature or perhaps check on a myth or fact. Each episode concludes with a profile of the Public Servant of the Week, a light-hearted introduction to the men and women who come from throughout the state to represent the people of their district and Idaho in the

Legislature.

DOWNTON ABBEY “The sun is rising behind Downton Abbey, a great and splendid house in a great and splendid park. So secure does it appear that it seems as if the way of life it represents will last for another thousand years. It won’t,” writes Julian Fellowes who created the Downton Abbey script. It is 1912, the era that introduced electric lights and telephones. People arrive by train and automobiles. It is the dawn of the modern era. The people in the great house manage the large country estate with the help of an army of servants, who know the family’s secrets yet the family knows nothing of the servants’ lives. “I simply liked starting in this time because it was just before all the changes,” says Fellowes, who won an Academy Award for his Gosford Park screenplay, “You can smell those changes — they’re already in the air. The modern world is coming.” But at Downton Abbey, Dowager Countess of Grantham, Violet,

played by Maggie Smith, glowers at the interloping modern world and delivers winning lines with gusto, such as: “No Englishman would dream of dying in someone else’s house.” Meanwhile, her son, Robert (Hugh Bonneville), Earl of Grantham, and his American-born wife, Cora (Elizabeth McGovern), Countess of Grantham, face a crisis rooted in an earlier age. The Titanic has just gone down, taking with it the heir to the estate. Robert and Cora have three daughters who cannot inherit the estate; they hope to marry off a daughter to a distantly related heir to keep the estate in the family and Cora’s family money coming from America. The new heir is a handsome lawyer — a bachelor — living in Manchester.

Airs weekdays beginning January 3at 4:00/3:00 p.m. MT/PT

Creature teachers and zoologists Chris and Martin Kratt take 6- to 8-year olds and their families along on extraordinary animal-powered adventures in this new series, which premieres with two 30-minute episodes Monday, January 3, beginning at 4:00/3:00 p.m. MT/PT. WILD KRATTS replaces MAYA & MIGUEL, which leaves the weekday lineup after its Friday, December 31, episode. After a one-day absence on January 3, CYBERCHASE returns to its regular weekday time slot at 4:30/3:30 p.m. MT/PT. WILD KRATTS transforms the Kratt Brothers, creators of the award-winning KRATTS’ CREATURES and Emmy-winning ZOBOOMAFOO, which airs weekdays at 1:30/12:30 p.m. MT/PT, into animated versions of themselves, allowing the real-life zoologists to visit wild animals in their little-seen habitats and showcase key science concepts along the way. From elephants using physics to suck gallons of water with their trunks, to a fleet of peregrine falcons that harness the force of gravity to speed through the air, each of the 40 new half-hour episodes presents science inspired by the natural abilities of the animals. The show features the hosts in live-action segments starring actual animals as the brothers wonder what it would be like to experience difficult and impossible-to-film wildlife moments. Then the brothers transform into animated versions of themselves and the adventure begins as they give their young viewers a glimpse into the lives of extraordinary creatures inhabiting some of the most exotic locales in the world. Other characters include Aviva Corcovado, a young inventor who helps the sibling adventurers by developing cutting-edge animal-inspired gadgets, and Koki, a no-nonsense electronic whiz. Together they do battle with biotech villain Zach Varmitech and other environmental evildoers.

The human brain is as powerful as it is mysterious. It weighs a mere 3 pounds, but it is the most important organ in the human body because it controls all of our bodily functions as well as the other organs. On this month’s D4K host Joan Cartan-Hansen talks with brain experts about this amazing organ. Her guests include Dr. David Bettis, a Boise child neurologist. Students can watch the show over the air or on the D4K Web site. They can send questions through email to D4K@idahoptv.

org, fax them in before the show to (208) 373-7245, or call in live during the program to (800) 973-9800. Shortly after the show, students can view a Web-only video with Bettis and Cartan-Hansen’s other guests answering questions that were not part of the on-air broadcast. The D4K Web site (idahoptv.org/D4K) provides educational materials throughout the season. Students can access more information and facts about each topic, links, reading lists, a glossary, podcasts

of programs, video shorts, full episodes and special D4K Web-exclusive programming.

JANUARY 2011 PRIMETIME ALL-CHANNEL SCHEDULE

Mondays at 9:00 p.m. MT/PTSee it in HD at 7:00/6:00 and 10:00/9:00 p.m. MT/PT

Five new films in January open with separate episodes on Civil War foes Robert E. Lee and U.S. Grant. Robert E. Lee (January 3) examines the life and reputation of the general whose military successes make him the scourge of the Union and the hero of the Confederacy, and who is elevated to almost god-like status by admirers after his death. Today, Lee remains a source of fascination and, for some, veneration. From the time he was a young man, Robert Edward Lee carried himself as if the command of men was his destiny. While many found much to admire, others called him the “marble man,” a studied perfectionist who strove to be a paragon and prided himself on duty, self-denial and discipline. U.S. Grant: Warrior (January 10) paints a revealing portrait of one of America’s most paradoxical leaders, from his first days on the Ohio frontier to the darkest days of the Civil War. Few public figures have ever held such a firm grip on the American popular imagination as Ulysses S. Grant. Like his counterpart Lee, Grant was a brilliant military strategist and Civil War hero whose legacy continues today. Grant rose from obscurity to a rank held previously only by George Washington, then became a leader for whom thousands of Northern soldiers were willing to fight and die, and for whom thousands did. Dinosaur Wars (January 17) explores the rivalry of 19th century American paleontologists Othniel Charles Marsh and Edward Drinker Cope. Ruthless, jealous and insanely competitive, Marsh would compete with Cope over the discovery of the greatest dinosaur burial ground of all time. Over time, the two rivals would uncover the remains of dozens of prehistoric animals, including

130 species of dinosaur; collect thousands of specimens; provide ample evidence to prove Charles Darwin’s hotly disputed theory of evolution; and put American science on the world stage. But their professional rivalry eventually spiraled out of control. Panama Canal (January 24) uses an extraordinary archive of photographs and footage, interviews with canal workers, and firsthand accounts of life in the Canal zone to tell the story of the project that connected the world’s two largest oceans in 1914 and signaled America’s emergence as a global superpower. But the U.S. paid a price for its victory: more than a decade of ceaseless, grinding toil, an outlay of more than $350 million — the largest single federal expenditure in history to that time — and the loss of more than 5,000 lives. The Greely Expedition (January 31) tells a harrowing tale of one of the great scientific adventures of all time. In 1881, 25 men led by Lt. Adolphus Greely sailed from the harbor of St. John’s, Newfoundland. Their destination was Lady Franklin Bay in the high Arctic, where they planned to collect a wealth of scientific data. Three years later, only six survivors returned, with a daunting story of shipwreck, starvation, mutiny and cannibalism. Drawing on an impressive documentary record that includes scientific accounts, diaries, photographs and letters, the film reveals the pressures experienced by the members of the expedition, and shows how poor planning, personality clashes, questionable decisions and pure bad luck conspired to turn a noble scientific mission into a human tragedy.

Beginning January 19 Idaho Public Television kicks off six consecutive weeks of back-to back nOvA SCIEnCEnOW and nOvA episodes in their new Wednesday night time slots. Hosted by astrophysicist, author and director of the Hayden Planetarium Neil deGrasse Tyson, nOvA SCIEnCEnOW is structured around six “big questions”: Can We Make It to Mars? How Smart Are Animals? How Does the Brain Work? Can We Live Forever? Where Did We Come From? What’s the Next Big Thing? Each episode features one of these thought-provoking topics and examines the latest discoveries and breakthroughs that help us determine who we are, how we got here, and where things are going. Each show is designed to contribute to a better understanding of ourselves and our place within the universe. The scheduling change that coincides with nOvA’s move to Wednesday night creates a two-hour slate of prime-time science and technology programming for viewers to connect with new discoveries and inspiring people that are transforming the way we live. “For our new season of nOvA SCIEnCEnOW we present themed episodes that tackle the big questions on people’s minds — so there’s something there to pique everyone’s curiosity and imagination,” says deGrasse Tyson. Can We Make It to Mars? (January 19) This episode examines all of the perils and dilemmas of space journey— as well as the ingenuity being used to design innovative new materials for such an undertaking. The show also looks new innovations to keep astronauts alive, using novel meteorite-proof materials, artificial gravity, exercise, and new modes of transport, such as plasma rockets. Can We Live Forever? (January 26) DeGrasse Tyson hits the road to check in on scientists now learning how to grow custom-made vital organs — generating living hearts and lungs to replace the old ones as they start falling apart — and who imagine a day when any faulty body part will be easily replaced with an off-the-shelf transplant.

PBS’ long-standing science series moves to Wednesday evenings and kicks off its new time slot with a new mini-series Making Stuff, which examines the amazing advancements in materials science. New York Times technology correspondent and best-selling author David Pogue brings his trademark goofball humor and techie zeal to the exploration of the future of “stuff.” Each episode explores the talent, luck and determination that can turn a wild idea into a cutting-edge material or a high-tech breakthrough. “I’m not exaggerating when I tell you that it’s been the experience of a lifetime,” wrote Pogue on his PBS blog. “I’ve been hang gliding. I had an MRI. I spent a weekend on a Navy nuclear aircraft carrier. I rode in a demolition derby (in a 1970s car with no seatbelts). I swam with — and actually got to pet — 9-foot reef sharks in the Bahamas. This should be a very entertaining show, provided I survive.” The mini-series begins with Making Stuff Stronger (January 19), which examines some of the world’s strongest materials. From steel to Kevlar and spider silk to carbon nanotubes, Pogue looks at the ways in which science and nature work to make strong stuff. In the information age, smaller is better. Making Stuff Smaller (January 26) looks at the research that tries to make devices such as tiny transistors and microchips — and the laptops and cell phone that they power — even smaller. Pogue takes viewers to an even smaller world as he profiles the latest in high-powered nano-circuits and micro-robots that may one day hold the key to saving lives and building materials from the ground up. The mini-series continues next month with Making Stuff Cleaner on February 2 and Making Stuff Smarter on February 9. IdahoPTV is partnering with the Discovery Center of Idaho, Boise State’s department of material science and engineering, Idaho National Laboratory, and Micron Technology on a series of Science Café events in conjunction with this series beginning January 18 at the State Capitol Auditorium.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Joy Adamson’s milestone book, Born Free, a story that changed the way people think about wildlife. This episode relives the dramatic story of the late Adamson and her husband George, who become surrogate parents to an orphaned lion cub named Elsa and her eventual release back into the wild. Adamson’s book sells millions of copies around the world, and the extraordinarily successful film based on the book goes on to win two Academy Awards. Elsa’s Legacy: The Born Free Story (January 9) goes behind the scenes of Born Free to examine the genesis and aftermath of this landmark story. The documentary takes viewers through challenges in making Born Free and the real-life drama of the Adamsons as pioneering conservationists. nATURE revisits the people featured in the movie and discusses the importance and dangers of their revolutionary views about animals. “This is an insider’s look at the world’s first environmental icon,” says Fred Kaufman, series executive producer. “There’s no question that Elsa became an ambassador of wildlife

preservation because of the Adamsons and Born Free. Looking at Elsa’s legacy, we’re able to see wildlife protection then and now and how one animal made a world of difference.” Published in 1960 and followed by a film and Academy Award-winning song of the same name in 1966, Born Free became a phenomenon that stimulated worldwide interest in the plight of wild animals that still resonates today. Also premiering this month on nATURE is Birds of the Gods (January 23), a look at the rare birds of New Guinea. To find these birds is a difficult assignment, and to witness their extraordinary mating displays is even tougher. David Attenborough introduces a young team of New Guinean scientists on a grueling expedition to find and film these Birds of Paradise. Repeats this month are American Eagle (January 2), White Falcon, White Wolf (January 16), and Born Wild: The First Days of Life (January 30).

“Any Human Heart”“Every life is both ordinary and

extraordinary,” says Logan Mountstuart, the hero of William

Boyd’s adaptation of his own hugely successful novel, Any Human Heart. Any Human Heart on MASTERPIECE CLASSIC tells the story of Logan’s long and rackety life. His years span every decade of the 20th century, in all its fantastic and humdrum, dangerous and tranquil, tragic and humorous aspects. The novel takes the form of the journals of Logan’s life — born in Uruguay 1906 and dying in France in 1991. It is a subjective, compelling and deeply moving portrait of one person’s journey through history. And yet it is universal. This is the adventure of all our individual journeys, in essence, of all our lives: sometimes buffeted

On Tuesday, January 11, the day before the one-year anniversary of the disaster, three PBS shows examine some of the issues that still plague Haiti in the aftermath of the disaster, which injured 300,000 and left more than 1 million homeless. In nOvA Deadliest Earthquake (7:00/8:00 p.m. MT/PT; see it in HD at 6:00/5:00 p.m. MT/PT) a camera crew follows a team of U.S. geologists as they enter Haiti in the immediate aftermath of last January’s tragedy. It is a race against time as they hunt for crucial evidence that will help them determine exactly what happened deep underground and what the risks are of a new killer quake. Their work, and the work of geologists at earthquake hot spots around the U.S., seeks breakthroughs in predicting quakes before they happen. FROnTLInE Battle for Haiti (9:00 p.m. MT/PT; see it in HD at 7:00/6:00 and 10:00/9:00 p.m. MT/PT) looks at the country’s high crime rate when, in the

chaos of the earthquake, thousands of the its worst criminals seize the opportunity to stage a mass escape from the National Penitentiary. One year later the gang leaders are re-asserting control in the capital of Port-au-Prince and threatening the country’s stability. With unique access to the police units trying to hunt down the gangsters—and revealing encounters with the gangsters themselves—FROnTLInE examines the uphill fight to rebuild Haiti in the face of deep-rooted corruption and intimidation. The final segment is InDEPEnDEnT LEnS Children of Haiti (10:00 p.m. MT/PT; see it in HD at 8:00/7:00 p.m. and 11:00/10:00 p.m. MT/PT), which is told through the eyes of three teenage street boys. The documentary takes viewers on a poignant journey through the northern city of Cap-Haitian and provides an up-close look at Haiti’s national epidemic of more than 500,000 orphans living in the streets. Three Shows Examine Aftermath of Haiti Earthquake

Less than a year after his career-changing Oscar-winning role as Bad Blake in Crazy Heart, this film gives viewers an unexpected window into the life of actor Jeff Bridges, whose easygoing style has endeared him to audiences for some 40 years. The 90-minute film, which begins AMERICAn MASTERS’ 25th season, also coincides with Bridges’ return to the screen in Tron Legacy — reprising his role as Kevin Flynn from Tron (1982) — and as Rooster Cogburn in the remake of True Grit. Once called “the most natural and least self-conscious screen actor that has ever lived” by critic Pauline Kael, Bridges has been plying his trade most of his life. With his first role as an infant in The Company She Keeps and a childhood television debut in his late father Lloyd’s television series Sea Hunt, he burst onto the silver screen in The Last Picture Show in 1971 and was

immediately recognized with a best supporting actor nomination — the first of his five Oscar nominations. Bridges has created original and memorable characters in notable films such as Starman (1984), The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989), The Fisher King (1991) and The Big Lebowski (1998). Featured in The Dude Abides are clips from these and several other Bridges’ films, including Against All Odds (1984), Tucker (1988), Texasville (1990) and The Contender (2000). Helping to provide perspective on Bridges’ work are on-screen interviews with directors Terry Gilliam, Taylor Hackford and Peter Bogdanovich and actors Robin Williams, Robert Duvall, John Goodman, Stacey Keach, Cybil Shephard, Mercedes Ruehl and Karen Allen. A stellar cast for this five-part series is part of a season of BBC programs that mark the 70th anniversary of World War II. LAnD GIRLS follows the lives and loves of four girls away from home doing their part for Britain in the Women’s Land Army. The WLA was a British civilian organization created during World War I and II to work in agriculture replacing men called up to the military. Women who worked for the WLA were commonly known as Land Girls. As they adapt to their new surroundings and knuckle down to some hard work and play, they realize that their lives will never be the same again. Against the backdrop of war-weary 1940s Britain, the film is set on the Hoxley Estate as the girls balance their working lives at the run-down Pasture Farm. Nancy, Joyce, Bea and Annie

have all joined the WLA for very different reasons, but they all have one common goal, to serve their country and help win the war. The drama follows the women as they try to live out their lives in very challenging circumstances, with lots of laughter and tears along the way. The series’ final three episodes air February 1, 8 and 15.

and overwhelmed by historical forces, sometimes left calm and unruffled. It is expansive, rich, unsentimental but also profoundly moving. The film follows Logan from his time in Oxford. It traces his literary market success with the publication of a “racy” novel; through numerous affairs and two marriages; one tragic true love; adventures as a spy behind enemy lines; flirtations with Wallis Simpson; encounters with Ernest Hemingway and Ian Fleming; and a sexual scandal in the New York art scene. It shows him destitute in Pimlico, covers an unlikely heroism, and ends with his final hours and perhaps even contented death. It is compelling, witty, sexy, emotional and clever, and also a brilliant and innovative charting of the history of the 20th century. Logan has the habit of popping up, Zelig-like, at pivotal moments and teetering on the brink of immortality before, inevitably, plunging back into obscurity. Logan’s journey touches on key moments and movements that continue to shape our times in the 21st century: the pre-war emergence of the working class power and the end of establishment complacency; the rise of European Fascism; the last global conflict, that was World War II and its long shadow; the zenith of American hegemony in the 1950s and 60s; the emergence of political terrorism; the squalor and degradation of urban poverty; and finally the serenity and wisdom that a long, fully lived life can provide. Any Human Heart airs on MASTERPIECE CLASSIC on three consecutive Sundays, beginning February 13.
