Bethany McLean is a contributing editor at Vanity Fair. She graduated from Williams College in 1992 with a double major in math and English, and spent the next three years working as an investment banking analyst at Goldman Sachs. In 1995, she joined Fortune Magazine as a reporter, and eventually became an editor-at-large. Her 2001 piece, “Is Enron Overpriced?” was one of the first skeptical articles about Enron, and after the company collapsed into bankruptcy, she co-authored the “Smartest Guys in the Room: The Amazing Rise and Scandalous Fall of Enron” with her Fortune colleague Peter Elkind. A documentary based on the book was nominated for an Academy Award in 2006. In 2008, McLean joined Vanity Fair as a contributing editor. Her recent book, which she co-authored with New York Times columnist Joe Nocera, is “All the Devils are Here: The Hidden History of the Financial Crisis.” She is also a columnist for Reuters and a contributor at CNBC.

Pat Quinn, governor
greetings As Governor of the State of Illinois, I am pleased to welcome you to the 2014 Illinois Governor’s Conference on Affordable Housing.
Housing is an engine that drives our economy forward, creating jobs, generating wages and contributing to commercial activity throughout the state. Through the Illinois Housing Development Authority, my administration is leading the most aggressive housing revitalization programs the state has ever seen to turn challenges into opportunities.
We have launched innovative programs to support homeownership, expanded our efforts to stabilize communities hit hard by foreclosure and worked tirelessly to increase the affordable rental options available to working families, seniors and people with disabilities. Our success would not be possible without our partners and we continue to count on your support at this critical stage of the recovery.
As co-host for the second year in a row, the Illinois Housing Council (IHC) brings the experience of over 195 organizations involved in all aspects of affordable housing. Their advocacy on behalf of owners, property managers, developers, financial institutions, investors, builders, subcontractors, local government, accountants, civic organizations, market analysts and consultants contributes to an environment of growth and opportunity throughout the state.
I would like to welcome author of All the Devils are Here: The Hidden History of the Financial Crisis Bethany McLean, Senior Vice-President at Purpose Built Communities Carol Naughton and all of the panelists with us to discuss the challenges and solutions we face as partners. Together, we can ensure every resident of Illinois has access to a safe, decent and affordable place to call home.
On behalf of homeowners, homebuyers and renters throughout the state, I offer my best wishes for a successful conference.
Sincerely,
Governor Pat Quinn
