Are you at a loose end and maybe looking to do some voluntary work? Care & Craft maybe ideal for you We meet fortnightly at the Senior Citizens Hall from 11am to approx 1.30pm. Care & Craft is a voluntary Community Project and caters for folk who have had a stroke or other disabilities or just lonely. If you know of someone who needs a few hours away from their own environment, we can help. We do very simple crafts and this is like a therapy as well as an enjoyment. If interested at all you may contact; Noreen 308 9992, Ann 308 9461, Helen 308 9331. You may also know someone who lives near you and could benefit from Care & Craft. Featherston’s music lovers were offered a remarkable selection of musical talent and genre at Sunday’s concert in the Anzac Hall. A well-balanced programme offered music in five languages, from familiar operatic themes to less well-known pieces that treated the audience of about 100 to almost two hours of musical excellence. International sopranos Georgia Jamieson Emms and Brigitte Heuser performed a selection of songs, duets, aria and lieder. Each has an outstanding talent, and their voices both contrasted and blended in The Flower Song from Lakme, the witty duet from Cosi Fan Tutte and the lullaby fron Hansel and Gretel. As soloists, each was enchanting, as well as (although it’s probably politically incorrect to say so) beautiful, presenting a visual as well as a musical treat. Their acting skills with gesture and expression, brought out the emotion or wit in each piece. Georgia, from Longwood, is thought of as one of “Featherston’s own”, and perhaps we may also now claim Brigitte because Georgia did marry Andreas, Brigitte’s elder brother, this month. Georgia’s tribute to Andreas was the song One Boy from the musical Bye Bye Birdie. Supporting Georgia and Brigitte was their talented and subtle accompanist Catherine Norton, who has played A Treat In Five Languages for us before at Georgia’s appearances in Featherston. Her sensitive accompaniment allowed the girls to shine. Further home-grown talent was offered by the Featherston Gentlemen Singers, tutored and conducted by Marguerite Tait- Jamieson and accompanied by Martin Lawrence Their selection included a moving rendition of “Bring Him Home” from Les Miserables, as well as other works such as “All for the Best” from Godspell and Irving Berlin’s “Blue Skies”. that demonstrated the advances in technique and style that this choir has achieved in the fiveyears that they have been singing together. It is great to see the railway crossing on Fitzherbert Streethas had a major upgrade. There were some businesseswithout water for a length of time during the process. A fewof the business owners rang the council offices concernedabout not having water and they were put on an alternativewater supply and their business was not disrupted in anyway. This is something for all businesses to be aware of and shouldsomething like this happen in the future they should ring theCouncil offices to see what alternative service is possible.

Closing a State Highway and disrupting a major rail networkis a big task that costs a lot of money , Council took theopportunity to upgrade some of its infrastructure while therail upgrade was occurring, this saved the ratepayersthousands of dollars. It is really great when agencies such asOntrack, the New Zealand Transport Agency and localCouncils can work together in order to be more cost effective.

The Community board has received some funding from theSouth Wairarapa Rotary Club to concrete the area around

Councillor’s Commentby Councillor Solitaire Robinson

the Skate Park where the Gazebo and entrance are. Thiswork will be done by Oldfields who have subsidised thecost of the work and the Community Board will fund thebalance. This will tidy up the area significantly and providebetter access to the park.

There is a litter problem around the Skate Park and it isdisappointing to see the young people using this facilitydumping their rubbish on the ground. The users of the skatepark need to remember that there were a lot of people inFeatherston who worked very hard to make this parkhappen and would like to see it being respected.

Speaking of rubbish, Council recently adopted aninfringement system for litter in order to issue fines to peopleobserved dumping litter. The illegal dumping of rubbish onroad reserves , in our towns and outside the recycling stationsis not acceptable and costs Council and the ratepayersmoney. In future, if people are caught dumping rubbish thenthey can expect to pay the price.

As most people will be aware, there was recently a problemwith the water source that feeds Featherston and as a resultFeatherston was put on an alternative supply. While this didhave an unpleasant taste, tests showed no contamination andthe water was perfectly safe to drink. Council sent out aninformation leaflet to all urban households as well as providinga water tanker daily for people to come and fill up theircontainers.

The community patrol is well underway, with an enthusiasticgroup of patrollers. We are always on the lookout for morevolunteers to assist, there is a training regime that all memberswill need to take part in and this will be occurring later in theyear. If anyone wished to join, please contact the FeatherstonPolice for an application form. A big thank you must go tothe co-ordinator Davina Simms, it is not an easy task and isvery time consuming, but without someone there organisingrosters and liaising with the Police we would not have apatrol. Thanks Davina.

It was great to see so many people at the Mini Train Festival, what a fantastic day. Well done to all the people involved inmaking this event such a success.

Remember Porky, Dean and myself are there to representyou and can always be contacted if you have any concerns. Our contact details can be found on the South WairarapaDistrict Council website, or in the Council’s Long Term Planwhich is available at the Featherston Library. Till next time....

Featherston Lionesses.

Yes, the weather cleared for the Big Coast, but thevolunteers who were setting up the camp site were caughtin the Friday’s fast moving storm. Our sincere thanks tothe Lions who braved the storm, and set up the site. Sadlysome of our key personnel were not able to help thisyear, we missed you.

We catered for well over 400. The weather cleared upnice and to hear from the cyclists that it was warmer overour side of the ranges was great (but then we know that).

The weekend is one of our main money making eventsand all Lions/Lioness members try to help in some wayor other. We have a lot of fun and work well together. Abig thank you to the organizers.

Our joint project with the Lions is the painting of the SeniorCitizens Hall. Work commenced on March 22nd.

We are looking forward to joining the Lions next monthto hear an excellent speaker and join them for a meal atthe R.S.A.

In Room 1 we have the New Entrant and Year 1 children. Our focus is to ensure all children make a good start inlearning to read and write. We begin this by learning about words and how theywork. From their first day at school children areencouraged to hear sounds in words through activities likerecognizing rhymes, listening for beginning sounds ofnames and words, and knowing about chunks of sound inwords with syllables. They learn to link sounds they hearin words with single letters to begin with and then, whereappropriate with letter clusters. We have a very spacious classroom and there is plenty ofroom for different learning areas, including the mat area, our group tables, an art table, a writing table, adevelopmental area, two computer tables, and a readingroom.

Dear Sir

Being born in Masterton and commuting to Sam Mead’s KuranuiCollege I found a very strong friendship during my college yearswithin the Carterton, Greytown, Martinborough & Featherston. After living in Palmerston North, North Shore and Wellington,in 2001 I moved to Featherston for family reasons, withoutrealising this would bring me to find a Featherston that is acommunity at the very heart of the history of New Zealand. I have called home to many towns and cities in my brief tenureon this third rock from the sun, but never have I encountered thesame embracement of a people and community. Thank you to the Phoenix for keeping everyone in touch.

New sports movement class at Community Centre?

The Featherston Community Centre is a great venue and there’sa gap on Thursday evenings that Rupert Watson wants to fill.Rupert teaches better movement with his Feldenkrais classeson Saturday mornings and would like to extend his work topeople interested in improving sports skills with the spot onThursday nights.“What I do has origins in martial arts and is used by a widevariety of top performers around the world to improve theirbalance, coordination and self-organisation for better achievementin their chosen field,” says Rupert.“I like to work with people whatever their level of physicalcompetence but the great thing about Feldenkrais is its relevanceto both couch potatoes and athletes. But I would love to findsome of the latter in Featherston and really work on improvingtheir basic movement skills. Whether it’s running, golf, tennis, skiing, shooting or just getting more done in the garden,Feldenkrais is a gold mine, as essential elements of action, likeposture and breathing, get a lot better.”Rupert is canvassing the possibility of starting the new classafter Easter. It would be a series of 6 to 8 sessions on Thursdayevenings from 6.30-7.30. Featherston Walkways &Reserves Trust

As we approach our second AGM (April 22nd) we’ve beentaking stock of what we’ve achieved over the last 12months.

· Organising working bees: We’d like to thank themany people who’ve turned up to our working beesin Barr-Brown and Dorset Square. A special thanksto Robyn Perry for spearheading the effort in DorsetSquare and for making it presentable in time for thePasschendaele Exhibition in July.

· Building tracks: We’ve joined forces with theSouth Wairarapa Tramping Club (and others) to helpcut tracks in the hills above Featherston. Our shortterm goal is to connect up the Rimutaka Hill Roadsummit track to the end of Buck’s Road. Our longerterm goal is to link into the network of DoC trails inthe Tararua Mountains.

· Writing our Strategic Plan: We’ve outlined a planthat is both achievable and ambitious. Three core goals: 1.improve and maintain town reserves; 2. establish a culture ofaction and stewardship; 3. identify and tap into sources offunding. Two bold challenges: 1. extend track networks to themountain and lake; 2. organise and orchestrate events (walks, races). Most importantly, our plan is to enable individuals andgroups to get on with making Featherston recreationallyamazing. You can view the Plan on our website: http://www.sportsground.co.nz/fwrt.· Drafting Action Plans: We have drafted ActionPlans for all four town reserves: Barr-Brown, the Domain,Dorset Square and Otauira.· Writing grants and securing funding: We wererecently awarded just over $6000.00 for control of noxiousweeds and pest species in Barr-Brown. We have also appliedfor funding to help give Dorset Square a face lift and are inthe process of writing grants for track maintenance in theDomain and replanting natives in Otauira Reserve.· Supporting local initiatives: We were pleased to beable to throw our support behind the Wairarapa Multi SportClub’s Featherston-Rimutaka Mountain Bike Track proposal. The proposal is still being considered by DoC.· Having a say: Last month we drafted a submission tothe Greater Wellington Regional Council regarding theirWairarapa Corridor Plan. Among other issues, we highlightedthe need for increased train services, better provision for cyclistsand pedestrians along SH2 and SH53 and better coordinationof public transportation for major events in the area.

Everyone is welcome to join us for our AGM at7:30pm on April 22nd at the Community Centre. If youwould like to get involved in any aspect of our workplease contact Sarah on 308 8367 or [email protected].
