Trust members, Joan Smith, Robyn Perry, and Maria Fairburn want to see some of Featherston’s natural attributes - the reserves, Abbott’s Creek, the pylon tracks, and the the Rimutaka and Tararua Forest Parks – made more accessible to residents and visitors. They believe Featherston is unique in that the adjacent Rimutaka and Tararua Forest Parks are within walking distance of the township. With a few additional tracks from Otauira Reserve and Featherston Domain into the pylon tracks and forest parks, walkers could set out from their homes, the railway station, or their cars (parked safely in an urban area rather than in a remote, vandal-prone spot) into the bush and forests. On a round trip walkers may then return to take advantage of Featherston’s historical and other attractions, cafes, hotels, accommodation, shops, and cinema. Trust Convenor, Maria Fairburn, says funding and promotion of the current reserves and future walkways will be key factors in the success of such a network. Publication of a brochure/map suggesting a walkway linking up Otauira Reserve, Dorset Square, Featherston Domain, and the Barr Brown Reserve are pending, and will follow Council’s acceptance of the proposed signage for the route and installation of the signs. Another of the Trust’s long-term plans includes developing a roadside walkway from Featherston to Lake Domain at the northern end of Lake Wairarapa. [email protected] Ph 30 88294

Barr-BrownReserveThe surfacing of a report written in 1977, has led FeatherstonWalkways and Reserves Trust members’ taking steps toproduce an action plan for the management of the reserve.

In the course of researching background information for theirsoon-to-be- published walkways brochure, they discoveredthat the reserve has rather special features. The age of themature, mostly totara, matai, and titoki trees, is around 400years, a remnant of the forest cover which once clothed theWairarapa Plain, and is the only known reserve of thisparticular type, on excessively free draining gravel, apartfrom Kiripiti Scientific Reserve on the Otaki Plains. Theseclaims were made in the report by the surveyor of the reserve,a past Director, DSIR Botany Division, who wascommissioned by residents to assess the ecologicalsignificance of the reserve at the time of a proposedsubdivision of the Barr-Brown and Atkinson block in the1970s.

In April this year, the Department of Conservation alsosurveyed the block and came up with recommendations forthe management of the 2 hectare reserve. Former SWDCplanner and Featherston resident, Emily Greenberg, hasproduced a management plan, and this will be going beforethe Council for approval shortly. Funding for the managementand restoration of the reserve has been kicked-off by SouthWairarapa Rotary.

Further information about restoration work will be publicizedonce the plan is approved.

The Barr Brown Reserve, opposite Fareham House onUnderhill Road, is currently unnamed. Signage will, however,be appearing soon..

Meta RiddifordKindergarten NewsWednesday’s at Meta Riddiford Kindergarten see a hive ofactivity and a delicious aroma coming from the kitchen as thechildren take part in process cooking. The children decideon what is made each week and on the menu so far has been;fruit kebabs with yoghurt, nachos (a favourite of manychildren), pancakes, sausage rolls and pizzas. The processof cooking is broken down into steps and children go throughthe cooking process step by step with the final step being thesampling of their efforts (this is the most popular part). Childrenare learning how to use utensils, kitchen appliances such asthe microwave, how to measure ingredients and skills in turntaking. Safety and hygiene are also areas in which the childrenlearn about as they take part in this very popular area oflearning.

June has seen the emergence of many bugs, colds and evenChicken Pox as winter sets in. As a result, the numbers ofchildren attending has been much lower. We thank parentsand caregivers for respecting the health and safety of thechildren and teachers of the kindergarten by keeping sickchildren at home until they have recovered.

A working bee was held in the last weekend of June wherefamilies gathered to tidy gardens, clear gutters and do otherjobs that needed to be done. Thank you to the families thathelped out at the working bee. Your help and assistance toget the jobs done really is appreciated and helps to keep thekindergarten looking good.

Thank you to Trust House Charitable Trust for approving ourgrant application. They have kindly granted the kindergarten$1000 to purchase science resources. With the new resourceschildren will be able to see bugs and creepy-crawlies up closeusing new bug viewers, view x-rays on a new light table, andlearn to use a microscope to view things of interest to them.Grants allow us to purchase wonderful resources for thechildren to further their learning in areas of interest to them.We would also like to acknowledge Eastern and CentralCommunity Trust for their grant for $3500 which is to beused to purchase additional outdoor challenge courseequipment.

We are heading into a term break for two weeks from 7th ofJuly. Thank you to all the families who have supported theteachers and kindergarten in many varied ways during theterm. We wish all of the children and their families a safe andfun term break and look forward to seeing everyone back onMonday, 21st July from 8.30 for our morning session andfrom 1.30pm for our afternoon session.

Featherston’sambulanceservice –can we save it?The situation is now extremely serious.Last month we told you that just threepeople were keeping Featherston’sambulance going, now it’s down to two. Justtwo good people. Only one holds a NationalCertificate, so – without her – theambulance cannot go on the road. The otherhas PHEC – Pre-Hospital Emergency Care, the basic qualification for ambulance crew.

It is simply not fair to put so muchresponsibility on two volunteers. Toprevent burnout, Featherston can only be onduty for three nights in each 12. Becausethe PHEC officer has an early work start, only Saturdays get the full 12 hour shift.

This is bad.

What happens when Featherston can’tmuster a crew?

The ambulance comes from one of the othertowns – perhaps as far away as Masterton.Yes, it will take longer. Doesn’t that leavethe other town short? Yes it does. Notgood.

So now what happens? We needvolunteers!

Key requirements are good communicationskills, normal physical fitness, motivationand availability for training and regular duty.(6 p.m. to 6 a.m.) You will need anunrestricted driver’s licence and we arrangea routine police clearance. There’s no

upper age restriction (most of us aregrandparents). You don’t need to start withany formal qualifications, and you do not needto be a St John member already. All thetraining is provided free (+ uniform, +expenses) and you have assistance and back-up every step of the way.

And whilst I’m training?

We’re borrowing officers from other towns(accommodating and feeding them) – when wecan. Once we’re certain we can keep theFeatherston service going, we’re upgradingFeatherston’s vehicle to a 21st century modelwith a self-loading stretcher.

And we’re working flat out to make you feelwelcome, and to help you through the training, both hands-on and on-line.

As an ambulance officer . . .

♦♦♦♦♦ You will save lives

♦♦♦♦♦ You will learn things that will be useful for the rest of your life

♦♦♦♦♦ Your kids will think you’re a super-hero.

♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ Ambulance work looks very good on your CV

♦♦♦♦♦ Your employer gets a great first-aider

♦♦♦♦♦ When you see the stories in the papers you will always know what really happened. (But you won’t be able to tell! Patient confidentiality is paramount.)

♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ Even if you leave Featherston, your skills will be in demand wherever you live.

♦♦♦♦♦ Almost all NZ ambulance officers started off as volunteers – could this be a career step?

So now? Ring Heather (phone 308 8591) dayor night and talk to her or leave a message. Shecan give you an introduction pack and a nopressure chat about how it all works.

I wonder . . . .What is the speed of darkness?

Why is it that people say they ‘slept like a baby’ when babieswake up every two hours?

Are there specially reserved parking spaces for ‘normal’people at the ‘Special Olympics’?

If the temperature is zero outside today and it’s going to betwice as cold tomorrow, how cold will it be?

Do married people live longer than single ones or does itonly seem longer?

How is it that we put man on the moon before we figuredout it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage?

Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then putmoney in binoculars to look at things on the ground?

Did you ever stop and wonder......

Who was the first person to look at a cow and say, ‘I thinkI’ll squeeze these pink dangly things here, and drink whatevercomes out?’

Who was the first person to say, ‘See that chicken there...I’m gonna eat the next thing that comes outta it’s bum.’

Why do toasters always have a setting so high that couldburn the toast to a horrible crisp, which no decent humanbeing would eat?

Why do people point to their wrist when asking for the time, but don’t point to their bum when they ask where thebathroom is?

Why does your Obstetrician, Gynaecologist leave the roomwhen you get undressed if they are going to look up thereanyway?

Why does Goofy stand erect while Pluto remains on all fours? They’re both dogs!

If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?

If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is madefrom vegetables, then what is baby oil made from?

Do illiterate people get the full effect of Alphabet Soup?

Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog’s face, hegets mad at you, but when you take him on a car ride, hesticks his head out the window?

Does pushing the elevator button more than once make itarrive faster?

Thank you FeatherstonFire Brigade

On behalf of St Teresa’s school we would like to thank theFeatherston volunteer fire brigade who came to the schoolto assist when there was a fire in one of the toilets at theschool on Friday 23rd May. Thank goodness there was nostructural damage done but a lot of smoke and smell. Weare grateful to this group of men. Thanks.

Following on from this the junior children participated in aFirewise programme and were able to see how a fire engine

operates.

Samuel shows what a great fireman he would makeStories from the dayAlex wrote:On Friday at 5 past 1 the fire bell went off. Everyone thoughtthat is was a false alarm or a fire drill, but when we were allon the court the teachers told us that it was a real fire!! Lotsof people were scared. Some people were even crying. When the fire engine came people were happy. “Yay” Isaid to myself. I was relieved. So the fire men sorted outthe problem and then we all went back to our classes.Lisa wrote:There was a fire at our school. At first everyone thought itwas a drill. It was during lunch time when the bell keptringing and ringing for about 5 minutes or more. It was scary. Some people saw the fire truck and started cheering. Afterthe fire we all had to go to the L & T room so the teacherscould talk to us. It was a frightening lunch time and I hopeone that doesn’t happen again.

Movies currently showing in July – Outsourced, Second Hand Wedding, Mama’s Boy, Blind sight, Dan inreal life. 4 the movie, Music within and How about you, Taking the Wae Wae Express, Journey to the fall.

Movies coming. I’m not there, the diving bell and the butterfly, Closing the Ring, Mongol, Grow your own,Happy go lucky.

Favorite Movie of the month – If you are looking for a light hearted, family comedy, really delightful, enjoyable movie then see Outsourced and Dan in real life – both I enjoyed and rave on about. Secondhand wedding looks like the nations favorite and I believe it is rated one of the best NZ movies.

Blu-ray movies screened at Featherston. Last week anyone I could persuade watched a few trailersin blu ray, this is the new Technology of the future here in Featherston. Once again I can go onabout the picture being so clear, more definite and with the surround sound just makes it fantastic. Iwill be noting on the programme which movies are blu ray. ‘Taking the Wae Wae Express’ was on HighDefinition.

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS - Saturday and Wednesdays 1.15pm –Horton Hears the who – blu ray

Taking the waewae Express - centres around the death of a young man in a foolish and avoidable car accident. It looks at the impact of this on his friends and family and particularly his best mate who was driving and causedthe accident. A story with a particular (and unfortunately tragic) resonance in New Zealand, the film abounds withauthenticity, engaging characters, warmth and unexpected humour. HD format

The cinema venue is available for Private Bookings, fundraisers and social functions. Hot and Cold drinks, cone Icecreams or sundaes, Munchies/sweets can be taken into the cinema.

View on our website information of the current and coming movies plus the weekly timetable. The Wairarapa News alsopublishes the weekly timetable and Programmes are displayed at the Featherston Lotto shop, Creative Image,Adamson’s Service Station, D & J Collins Auto Services
