Welcome to the beautiful Far South Coast - where else in the world would you want to be?

Winter has arrived, and although the nights are chilly, or even frosty for those inland from the coast, cold nights are usually followed by beautiful sunny days, perfect for outdoor activities or just curling up in a warm spot with a good book.

You won't have too much time for lazing around though - there's too many things happening on the Far South Coast this June.

The premier event this month is the Merimbula Jazz Festival, held over the Queen's Birthday weekend. Attracting musicians and jazz fans from all over Australia, the Jazz Festival is one of the premier festivals on the coast. The many faces of jazz music are showcased over three days, so finding music to suit your groove won't be hard. See page 3 for more information.

Also revisiting our area this month is the Great Southern Tour by David Miller and a talented selection of students from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. These are always exciting concerts - find more information on page 10.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests.

Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows.

A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.

Eden’s Simply Succulents


Part I of the exhibition reproduces images associated with working and school life of the district and include images associated with the workings of the bustling port of Eden. Part II (on show from 8 October) captures life in the main street of Eden - a time where cars and horses use the same untarred roads. Without television, celebrations and sports were a way to pass time, and Hall captured many of them, from dignitary receptions at the Hotel Australasia to sporting matches and milestones associated with sports such as tennis and football. The large and heavy dresses and hats that ladies once wore to play sport are a stark contrast to the tight body hugging uniforms of today.Hall’s passion for photography has provided a lasting and important legacy for Eden and the district, and because of the generosity of his family, today’s viewers are able to be a part of the life that was during the early to mid 20th century.

William Hall's passion for photography has produced one of the best pictorial legacies of the region. Reflections takes a selective look at the working and recreational life of the region in the early part of the 20th century. William Thomas Hall was born in Bega in 1880. He grew up in Tanja, then moved to Rocky Hall with his new wife, finally settling in Eden, where his seven children were born.Hall’s occupations included farmer, newspaper correspondent, auctioneer and agent, and at one time conducted a coach mail and passenger service between Eden and Towamba and the

His favourite pastime however was photography. From shipwrecks and whale chases to local school events, Hall’s collection of photographs document the lives of the district’s residents of the first half of the 20th century.For this exhibition, analogue and digital technologies merge. Digital technology has enabled Hall’s photographs to be reproduced larger than actual size, allowing viewers to wonder at the minute details that analogue photography captured close to a century ago. Costume, facial expressions, tools and all other such details of life caught at the time in a single photograph are now larger than life and more easily examined. Viewers have the chance to be drawn into the image as if they were standing alongside the photographer.

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation.Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site.European settlement began in the 1830's, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground.In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site.Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic

buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different.At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a fantastic community conservation and heritage project that has transformed this part of Pambula over the past 10 years. Covering former farmland, areas of saltmarsh, billabongs and the former Pambula Racecourse, the area has been extensively re-planted and has great walking and cycling tracks. The old race track is a great spot for the kids to cycle around, with the centre of the track often inhabited by kangaroos.Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent

swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families.Heading south toward Eden turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp for launching vessels. Several oyster growers sell fresh Pambula Lake oysters here too, including Broadwater Oysters.

Great Southern Tour by Conservatorium studentsThe Sapphire Coast Music Society is thrilled to be part of the annual Great Southern Tour of promising Sydney Conservatorium students. David Miller AM supervises the Great Southern Tour and provides piano accompaniment for the students. Asked about the Tour, David said, “The students, who are all in performance programs at the Conservatorium, bring to the Tour an enthusiasm and vigour which is hard to ignore.” A recital at 6pm on June 29th at the Wolumla Hall features these students.These are always exciting concerts as we meet some of the most promising musical students about to embark on their careers. Last years' event really struck a chord with local audiences, and the students really enjoyed playing to an enthusiastic audience. So if you don't want to miss out on something very special make sure you get your tickets early.Tickets are $18 members, $25 non-members, $21 concession, and school age children free when accompanied by an adult, and can be purchased at Magpie Music (Bega), Booktique Merimbula and Eden Music Centre. The June long weekend is when jazz takes over the coastal town of Merimbula.

From June 8 - 11, Merimbula Jazz Festival celebrates its 32nd year and is one of Australia's longest-running festivals. With an amazing organising committee and fantastic support from local businesses, the Jazz Festival continues to hit all the right notes. Jazz musicians and fans from all around Australia make this event a permanent fixture on their calendars.

Whilst there are eight official Jazz Festival venues, many cafes and restaurants around Merimbula also

celebrate the jazz spirit and transform themselves into live music venues.

Styles of music performed over the four days are many and varied with everything from big bands, swing bands, trad jazz, modern jazz, dixie, funk, duos, trios and quartets, all showing the many faces of jazz.

The Street Parade will be bigger and better this year with the advent of Pipe Bands and greater involvement of school big bands.

The Jazz Quest Competition which was begun last year will continue. This quest seeks to identify outstanding young jazz musicians, and is open to

trios to 6-piece outfits under 25 who live in the Bega Valley. There are several main prizes in variuos age groups, as well as other great prizes and a spot on the program.

Twyford Hall is Jazz Headquarters for the weekend and has tickets, programs and badges as well as being an official venue.

Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952.

A safe swimming beach patrolled by Tathra Surf Life Saving Club may also provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, and passing whales, heading south on their migration, are

frequently seen from September to November.

Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra.

There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club.

An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well.

Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for

swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary.

Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafés and restaurants.

Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s.

Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation.

Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of

mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area.

The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance.

Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop.

Shops with leather work, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and gift ware, as well as the pub, art studios, and the famous cheese factory are all located on Central Tilba’s main street.

The village of Tilba Tilba, just two kilometers down the road from Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing.

Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, gift ware and a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, (Pam's Store) and is the base for the walk up Gulaga.

Fresh fruit - what other choice is thereWell here we are in another Winter and with so many jobs still to do.As mentioned in previous issues, preparation for planting of winter bare root plants should be well under way if not already completed.This month sees the arrival in nurseries of bare rooted fruit and shade trees, roses, asparagus, rhubarb, artichokes, garlic and the list goes on.Fruit and shade trees are an important and integral part of the overall structure of a garden and careful planning of their siting is paramount to the success of the garden both for light and shade, and so they don't become a hindrance to other plants growing in the same location. Remember that trees grow and will cast more of a shadow as they mature and what might be a sunny spot now, could end up a shady spot in the years to come. Even a tree with no leaves in the Winter will throw a shadow over the surrounds. Fruit trees require a sunny location and a well drained situation to grow well and allow fruit to ripen evenly, and allow air movement throughout the tree which in turn reduces the likelihood of pests and diseases. Understanding the variety of your fruit tree is very important. Different varieties require different forms of cross pollination. Some are self pollinating

and some require cross pollination. An example of this are apples and pears that require a suitable cross pollinator to set fruit. Others like peaches and nectarines are mostly self pollinating. Ask your nursery person to give you the information that is relevant to your selection. Another important facet is whether the tree you intend to plant will do well in your location. Apple, pears and cherries need a certain amount of “chill” during winter to set fruit. An example of this are apples, that generally require up to 1000-2000 hours of temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius for the flowering buds to mature for fruit set. On the other hand, peaches and nectarines don't like a late spring frost

as they burn the blossom and destroy fruit set.Fruit growing is an exciting yet challenging task and many of the newer varieties introduced into Australia recently are now making their appearance in the nurseries around the country. With the price of fruit and vegetables being what they are there is no better substitute for fresh fruit from the garden. The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000.

To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must.

Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rush Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time.

After taking out the award for Cultural and Heritage Tourism at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010, in 2011 the Original Gold Rush Colony won the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award.
