2013 sees the return of the Candelo Village Festival. This biennial event brings together the many, many talented performers who live in the tiny village of Candelo. When they invite their friends from around Australia and overseas, you know magic is going to happen. The Opening Concert on Friday 12th will feature stunning new works by exceptional composers from the region created especially for the Festival - don't miss it! See page 11 for all the details.

Parks & Wildlife Service are running their Discovery Program. There's heaps of activities on at different locations around the region - have a look at page 9 for more information.

The Tathra Mountain Bike Enduro is on again - it's a weekend of bike racing through spectacular locations around Tathra. You'll find all the details on page 19.

The Bay Theatre Players are kicking off their 2013 with a moving musical theatre piece about Australian women touched by the Vietnam War. Relive this turbulent time through the eyes of a nurse, journalist, humanitarian worker, troops entertainer and the wife of a returned soldier. A show not to be missed - see page 31 for more info.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests.

Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows.

A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.

You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum.

Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring.

The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

New Exhibition - ‘Strike’In 1949, Eden’s fishing industry faced economic ruin. The two main fishing species of barracouta and salmon failed to arrive along the coast, leaving local fishermen wondering what to do next.Tuna was the answer. Fishermen at Bermagui claimed there were so many that they ‘could walk from their boats to the shore on the fishes’ backs’.Mostly caught by trolling up to seven lines, around 300, 000 pounds (136 kg) of tuna was caught in the first four weeks. Most of the tuna weighed around 20 pounds (just under 10 kg). Further out to sea, Commonwealth fisheries officers located schools of tuna weighing up to 50 pounds (22.6 kg).On 24 September 1950, the American owned tuna clipper Senibua (with its own spotting aircraft) began to prepare for experimental pole fishing for tuna in Australian waters. On its first cruise in waters near Jervis Bay, Senibua poled 6 tons of southern bluefin in 40 minutes. The visit by the clipper was seen as an opportune time for Australian fishermen to learn tuna poling methods from experienced crews and explore the commercial viability of Australian tuna resources.Tuna poling involved the ‘chumming’ of waters, where either dead or live bait was thrown into the school of tuna to create a feeding frenzy. While tuna were actively feeding, fishermen stood in racks attached to the sides of the fishing

vessel, and cast long lines with barbless feather lures or live bait. The fish strike the lure and once hooked, fishermen haul their long fishing poles overhead where the fish dislodge during the change in tension of the swinging action. The line and lure is then cast out again as quickly as possible to maximise the catch numbers while the feeding frenzy is at its peak. If fish proved too large for a single pole fisherman, the pole configuration changed to double and triple polers which allowed two or three men to haul in a single fish.

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation.Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site.European settlement began in the 1830's, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground.In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site.Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic

buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different.At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a fantastic community conservation and heritage project that has transformed this part of Pambula over the past 10 years. Covering former farmland, areas of saltmarsh, billabongs and the former Pambula Racecourse, the area has been extensively re-planted and has great walking and cycling tracks. The old race track is a great spot for the kids to cycle around, with the centre of the track often inhabited by kangaroos.Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent

swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families.Heading south toward Eden turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp for launching vessels. Several oyster growers sell fresh Pambula Lake oysters here too, including Broadwater Oysters.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices.

Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today.

In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access.

The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early European history.

There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.

Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkeling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close.

Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee.

Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme.

For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula and the surrounding areas that offer live music; especially during the annual Jazz Festival in June.

Tura Beach is only a short drive north, with its own shopping centre, country club and beautiful beach.

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples.

Tathra’s famous historic Wharf was built in 1862 from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company.

The location of the Wharf was chosen as it was the only suitable site between Merimbula and Bermagui, with protection from southerly winds provided by the adjacent headland.

Passengers travelling to Sydney shared the journey with local produce, and often pigs on their way to market, hence the name "Pig and Whistle Fleet" in relation to the Tathra steamships.

Because there was no railway line or decent roads, the steamer service was crucial to the region, and it continued to operate until 1954.

The Tathra Wharf is now classified

by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline.

Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, and passing whales, heading south on their migration, are frequently seen from September to November.

Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra.

There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club.

An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well.

Direct access to the ocean is available

at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary.

Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafés and restaurants.

On the 27th - 28th April, Tathra will be taken over by mountain bike enthusiasts competing in the third annual Tathra MTB Enduro. See page 19 opposite for more information.

Tathra MTB Enduro set to challenge riders in 2013Now in its third year the Tathra MTB Enduro has gained a cult following for its super flowing seaside single track, and its enthusiastic community spirit.The event encourages participation of all levels of mountain bike rider, with races styled to meet those needs.The Enduro is also blessed to have its event hub and over 40km of racing trails located within a stone’s throw of the Tathra township.In “family speak” that means you can ride from your accommodation to the start-line, race, and be back for an afternoon surf with the kids.Another drawcard for MTB fans is the entry fee. In a bid to keep it affordable, entry fees have not risen since the inaugural event, and as a memento, riders receive a free water bottle.On Saturday there are FREE Kids 1km and 3km races and a 10km Prologue for those interested in a quick warm-up ride. Then on Sunday it's the main events - the Bundadung 20km, Goat’s Knob 50km and the King Nelba 100km.In 2013 there have been some changes to the courses – Goat’s Knob 50kers can still expect plenty of climbing, however the development of new single trail in the Bundadung area, and access to some special trails on private land, now means riders will never be further than five kilometres from the heart of Tathra.

Those opting for the epic 100km can expect plenty more, as they tickle the trigs and ride perilously close to the district’s highest point.The Tathra Enduro is staged by volunteers, and is a not for profit organisation with funds raised used for renewable energy projects and the development and maintenance of MTB trails in the town. Using funds raised from previous events, the Tathra MTB Enduro has paid for solar panels on the Tathra Preschool, the Tathra Uniting Church, Tathra Surf Club, Tathra Star of the Sea Church, Brogo Rural Fire Service and the Bega Local Aboriginal Lands Council - a wonderful outcome for these community groups.In addition, funds have assisted in the maintenance and further development of the 40km Tathra MTB trail network.

From Tathra Beach, Ford’s Farm and Thompson’s Estate to the Kangarutha Wilderness and Boulder Bay, the event offers a rare opportunity to race along the coastline, tracking through reclaimed farmland and the stunning Mimosa Rocks National Park.Local history is full of old tales about gold being in ‘them thar hills’. Hundreds of prospectors flooded into the area in the 1850s. Whilst the boom in Tanja proved short lived – the prospectors have left behind a “gold mine” of trails.Loggers also plied their trade in the early to mid 1900s in the nearby Tanja forests. These earlier pioneers inadvertently created a modern mountain bikers dream, their legacy a labyrinth of old mining and logging trails ripe for riding. These trails form the heart of the Tathra Enduro, offering a mix of forest roads, double track and secret stashes of single track deep in the heart of the coastal wilderness.And as pretty as the picture is, the Tathra Enduro also offers some of the same hardships shown to the early settlers. Visit historic Montreal GoldfieldThe Montreal Goldfield is a Heritage Site 7km north of Bermagui on the Wallaga Lake Road. It is a virtually intact remnant of the gold rush days of the early 1880s, and is the only goldfield in Australia located beside the sea.The goldfield is a beautiful place, and it's hard to imagine it was once bare ground with every blade of grass and shrub removed, every tree cut down and heaps of dirt and holes, making it look like a tortured moonscape. But nature looks after itself; today the trees are enormous, the ferns are fabulous and the wildflowers in spring

are beautiful to see.A tour through the Montreal Goldfield is a special experience, and is just the place to go for a couple of hours enjoyment.Tours of the Goldfield are held daily at 2pm and take around 1 ¼ hours, and toilet facilities are available. If you have a group of more than 12, contact the Bermagui Visitors Centre 6493 3054 and choose a time that suits you. Admission is $5pp.If you're in Bermagui, make sure you make time to visit Montreal Goldfield and step back in time to another world.

The picturesque historic village of Cobargo is far more than a working village. It is a creative, vibrant place reflecting the diversity and talents of those who live and work in the district.

Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Shops with leather work, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and gift ware, as well as the pub, art studios, and the famous Cheese Factory are all located on Central Tilba’s main street.

Indulge in some retail therapy in Moruya's many specialty shops stocking unusual items

Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet.

The town manages to retain a '1950s fishing village' vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafes and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a patrolled beach, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in.

Narooma is the base for charter operators offering tours to nearby Montague Island, with its spectacular lighthouse, little penguin and fur seal colonies and Aboriginal heritage.

Just up the road from Narooma is Bodalla, the village with the magnificent stone church and many other historic buildings. The village was developed by Thomas Mort in the late 1800s as a private country estate based around the dairy and cheese making industries, which still dominate Bodalla today.

All Saints Anglican Church was commissioned by the Mort family in memory of Thomas Mort and his wife. Work began on the Church in 1880 and was completed in 1901.

Further north, the township of Moruya also has beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes and is a great place to explore.

It’s famous for supplying the granite used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, as well as Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW and the Cenotaph in Martin Place.

These days however, Moruya is known

for the large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street.

Fantastic cafes, restaurants and pubs with live music can also be found in this bustling little country town that has lots to offer.

Have a NPWS guided tour of Montague Island.

The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000.

To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must.

Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time.

After taking out the award for Cultural and Heritage Tourism at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010, in 2011 the Original Gold Rush Colony won the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award.

Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings.

There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.
