ContentsWelcome to spring on the Far South Coast; it's September and that means the humpbacks are here! Actually, some whales decided to come early this year on their journey south to the feeding grounds of the Antarctic, with sightings at beginning of August; they must know when they're on to a good thing!
There are plenty of options for whale watching; you can go out on a whale watching cruise, a charter boat, fly along the coast in a plane or hang out on the nearest headland or cliff top. If you're at the beach and you're really lucky, you can sometimes see whales just 100 metres or so offshore!
The Far South Coast is one of the best places to go whale watching in Australia; you don't have to travel far at all to see humpback whales plus other species including blue, minke and false killer whales.
Things to do other than whale
watching include the Rural Fire Service State Championships, held this year in Pambula on the 12th - 14th September.
The event is the premier competitive firefighting event for members of the NSW RFS, with teams from across NSW competing in events like the Sprint Challenge, Equipment Catastrophe, Fire Ground Fundamentals and the Chainsaw Challenge. Check What's On on the page opposite for more info.The Pambula Merimbula Golf Club is holding an Oktoberfest weekend on September 19th - 20th; head to page 13 for all the details.

Activities include a Poets Corner (bring a poem to read out and arrive in 1880s period costume), gold panning of gravel deposits and tours from 9.30am - 3pm. George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests.
Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows.
A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.
For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.
You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum.
Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring.

J R Logan: Community & Nation exhibition at Killer Whale MuseumWhen you turn on a light switch in Eden, think of John Ronaldson Logan, the local entrepreneur who established the town’s first public electricity plant a century ago. By some he is also considered the father of the Snowy Hydro-Electric Scheme, so passionate was he about the scheme and its potential for Eden and the district, he expended a great deal of personal time and finances planning and campaigning the merits of the project. Eden Killer Whale Museum also stands as testimony to Logan’s contribution to Eden. He showed great foresight in having the skeleton of the killer
whale known as Old Tom preserved, and in securing a permanent home for it, allowing visitors from around the world to continue to experience the retelling of Eden’s killer whales and whaling stories. Logan built the beautiful Edrom Lodge as his family's home on the shores of Twofold Bay, now a heritage listed property located near the multi-purpose wharf. Taking three years to build and employing many locals, the construction of 'Edrom' as it was then known, was a boon to the Eden economy.Another local landmark that remains a symbol of Logan’s community
spirit is the Log Cabin located in Bass Street. When he became aware that his daughter's girl guide brigade were desperate for a meeting place, Logan bought land and sourced information from overseas on designs of Canadian log cabins. He created a scale model of the cabin, secured building permission from the Girl Guide movement and oversaw the building of the cabin which was opened in 1936.When John Ronaldson Logan passed away at Edrom Lodge in 1937, an Australian newspaper article described his death as the loss of a ‘true patriot’. J R Logan: Community and Nation commemorates the contribution of this visionary man who served his country both formally during the First World War, and voluntarily upon his return. The exhibition also reflects on his determination and fervour to build the community’s infrastructure, and expand the town’s opportunities through utilising its natural wealth. The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation.
Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site.In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site.Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different.Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.
Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families.Heading south toward Eden, turn left off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s several oyster growers selling fresh Pambula Lake oysters, including Broadwater Oysters.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping, attractions and plenty of accommodation choices.
Merimbula has a long history of
human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today.
There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.
Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkeling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close.
There are plenty of restaurants and cafes to choose from too.
During the whale season there are several ways you can go and watch whales - from the headlands, with the boat charters, or by air.
Tura Beach is only a short drive north, with its own shopping centre, country club and beautiful beach.

Then make sure you're at the Pambula Merimbula Golf Club on Friday 19th - Saturday 20th September for Oktoberfest 2014.For more than 200 years, Oktoberfest in Germany has traditionally been held from late September to the first weekend of October, and these days it attracts over 6 million people.Luckily it won't be quite so crowded at the Golf Club, but there will be all your favourite features of the real thing, including German beer hall decor. On Friday night through Saturday there'll be a special German Menu for
lovers of wurst, pretzels and sauerkraut. The music isn't being forgotten, with German Oktoberfest music, a pub rock band and the big highlight, Oktoberfest Club Envy featuring awesome European tunes. Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment.
In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker.
Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway.

A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must...housed in a reproduction of one of the first buildings on the site, the Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s. It provides a fascinating insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.
The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides a wealth of information about attractions throughout the region.
Bega has survived the downturn in retail relatively well, and has shops stocking everything from antiques, unusual clothing, books, whole foods, cafes, nursery and major retail outlets.
Bega has a thriving arts community, with its own Regional Gallery that hosts major exhibitions throughout the year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery.

Tathra’s famous historic Wharf was built in 1862 from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company. The Wharf has
been classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline.
If you're at Tathra Beach you might see dolphins or even whales; they head south on their migration from September to November and can sometimes be seen from the beach.
There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl and playground located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club.
An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka.

Sculpture on the Edge is also held every March; this renowned event sees sculptures placed in spectacular locations around Bermagui, similar to Bondi's Sculpture by the Sea.
Another great cultural event in the biannual Four Winds Festival, to be held over the Easter weekend in 2016.

Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga Mountain, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as the famous Bates General Store and ABC Cheese Factory, located on Central Tilba’s main street.

Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet.
Tucked between the coastal ranges and the ocean, Narooma is the perfect place for a relaxed coastal holiday.
The town manages to retain a 1950s fishing village vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafes and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a beach that's patrolled in summer, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in.
With a choice of flat stretches or hills, there are lots of places to walk around town and take in the spectacular views over the Inlet, the mountains and the ocean.
Narooma has some easy cycling tracks, as well as being a great base for serious riders who are happy tackling rides 50km or longer.
Montague Island is located just offshore from Narooma and is a truly unique spot to visit. Twice voted as Tourism Australia’s top eco-tourism destination, you can take a National Parks & Wildlife Service tour of the island covering its heritage-listed buildings, wildlife and history, or stay for a few nights in one of the Lighthouse Keeper's cottages.
The island is home to the largest fur seal colony on the NSW coast, as well as being a breeding ground for 12,000 little penguins who come ashore at dusk after feeding at sea.
There are several charter boats to take you out to Montague Island, as well as fishing charter operators if you're into game fishing.
If you're looking for more leisurely pursuits, there are plenty of great cafes and restaurants to try, as well as shops to explore.

Head south and visit Bodalla's historic All Saints Church
the bridge pylons, 173,000 blocks and 200,000 yards of crushed stone that was used as aggregate for concrete.
Moruya granite was also used for Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW, the Cenotaph in Martin Place and the base of the Captain Cook statue in Hyde Park.
These days, Moruya is known for its beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes, as well as the large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street.
Fantastic cafes, restaurants and pubs can also be found in this bustling little country town that has lots to offer.
Traditionally home to two indigenous tribes, the Walbanga and the Brinja-Yuin, the name Moruya is derived from the word, mherroyah, meaning "home of the black swan". Black swans still feature in Moruya, frequently seen in the lakes and rivers around town.
European settlement began in the 1820s, with the township gazetted in 1851.
Moruya's granite quarries were famous for supplying the rock used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From 1925 to 1932, the Harbour Bridge works saw 250 stonemasons employed and relocated to Moruya by the contractor to produce 18,000 cubic metres of dimension stone for

The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000.
