    FALL IMPROVEMENTS, September 2015 3

Following the excitement ofsummer, autumn is the per-fect season to take a breath

and focus on improvements —both personal and around thehouse.

That’s our goal with this edi-tion of Fall Improvements. Forhome and lawn care, we discussways to weatherproof yourhome in a single weekend and

outline how to cut down weedsusing a scythe (yes, an actualscythe). I hope you’ll be inspiredto take on a daunting projectwhen you read about how mywife and I repainted some oldfurniture for the first time.

For personal improvements, coloring books geared towardadults are a great way to relax,

and they can be used as a formof therapy. You can also improve

     A Note From The Editor

your meals — and even createa great gift — by transformingleftover red wine into red winevinegar.

Of course, we also hope youspend some time enjoying theseason. We recommend joininga fantasy football league, visit-ing a haunted house or simplypausing for a moment to look atthe beautiful leaves. We created

a map of our favorites locationsto view fall colors in the Tri-statearea, but we also suggest walk-ing through the local towns, stopping in the shops andsoaking in the scenery before itvanishes for another year.

We hope you enjoy this edi-tion of Fall Improvements. Ournext special section, Holiday Gift

Guide, will publish on Nov. 26. — Darryl Gangloff

A Weekend Project With Warm Results By Janet Manko

Ever watch those do-it-yourself home-im-provement TV shows?

The best part is always thereveal, before and after —wow, what a difference! Iguess it would be most logi-cal to simply watch the lasteight minutes of any show.Because the worst part, forthis writer, is watching theprocess as it unfolds over, often, the course of a week-end, and just as often withastonishing results.

There are shows wherehome projects that mighttake the rest of us mere mor-tals considerably more timetake the cast a few hours, rarely adding up to more

    than a weekend’s worth of

work. “Hey, let’s break outthis wall after all and openup this space! It won’t takelong once we get started!”Or, “This kitchen is lookinga lile tired, let’s paint thesecabinets and put in a newbacksplash!” Or, “You know, this fireplace could reallyuse a new façade and man-tel, let’s just do it!”

Of course, it’s true that noproject will ever be com-pleted if it is not begun. Butwe average do-it-yourselferswho don’t happen to have aplumber or electrician in thefamily, or a sledgehammer-wielding teenager in themix, find it’s tough to finishoff any such undertaking in

    a single weekend. And the

longer it goes past its assignedtiming, the harder it is to actu-ally complete it to one’s liking.Life interferes: Aunt Lizzie is

visiting with her new husbandnext weekend, for instance, sowe just have to get this done soit’s usable.

Given the challenges of homeimprovement, it’s a wonder anyproject gets started. I thoughtit best to consult with a profes-sional to hear suggestions forrelatively simple tasks that

could still make a positivedifference in a living space. It would also help if it didn’tbreak the bank.

Hardware Store Manager PeterBroggi of C.A. Lindell & Son Inc.in North Canaan, Conn., laughedduring a recent interview whenhe admied that even he canfind it challenging to finish offprojects in the time he had imag-

ined they would take. But thereare ways to target worthwhiletasks and complete them withina reasonable time frame.

    SAVE MONEY AND KEEP WARM

A project that will benefiteveryone’s living space, whetherrented or owned, is weather-proofing. “With a lile time andeffort,” he said in an email, “youcan make some home improve-ments that will keep you cozythis winter and help slash yourenergy bills. Preparing yourhome for winter by sealing thecracks and gaps on the exte-rior of your home is one of thebest things you can do to savemoney on your utility bills, andit makes your home more com-

fortable for you and your family.

“Start by examining yourhome’s exterior, looking for ar-eas where pipes, exhaust ductsand cables enter the building.

Check for sealants that haveshrunk, cracked or fallen outand fill these voids using ex-panding foam or caulk sealants.Gaps around doors and windowsashes should be sealed withweather stripping, and gapsbetween permanent buildingmaterials sealed with caulking.”

    The greatest source of air

leakage in most homes occursaround doors, windows and ac-cess hatches, such as the ceilingopening from the living areainto an unheated aic, Brogginoted. Another common placefor air leaks is around electri-cal outlets and switches. Alsoconsider insulating pipes, ductsand water heaters for maximumefficiency and minimum energy

    loss. Window insulation film kits

are a good option for stoppingair leaks. Remember you willnot be able to open the windowor door once the product isapplied. These kits consist ofclear film that is aached usingdouble-sided tape. After thefilm is applied and trimmed, ahair dryer is used to shrink filmand remove wrinkles. Weatherstripping can be a delicate job, because those openings need tobe fied loosely enough that thedoor or window operates freely, yet tightly enough that air leak-age is stopped.

Garage doors are another ma- jor source of energy loss. Check

“Preparing your home for winter by sealing the cracksand gaps on the exterior of your home is one of thebest things you can do to save money on your utility

bills, and it makes your home more comfortable for you and your family.”

that the seal on the boomof the garage door is in goodshape. Nail-on replacements areavailable and will help seal outdrafts, Broggi said.

This advice may seem lessglamorous than installing anew countertop or breaking outa wall, but it will result in a lesstangible but very meaningful

outcome: saving money whilekeeping warmer throughoutthe winter months to come.

The materials to accomplishthe task can be easily purchasedat your local hardware storeand aren’t very expensive. Anddepending on the size of yourhome, this is one project thatseems very doable over thecourse of a weekend. Doesn’t

that make it the ideal autumnalhome improvement project?

The only farm tool at achurch sale down thestreet was a scythe. Make

an offer, the tag said. I hefted it,liked the feel. I said, $7.50? Theyleapt to accept, which probablymeant $1 would have suffi ced.

I brought the scythe home. The blade had weathered manysharpenings but had more

steel showing than the regularscythe I have. The snath wasthicker and beer curved, though the nibs needed to betightened.

I now had three scythes inthe shed. I had one for manyyears, for yard trimming. Mysister, in the mistaken beliefI collected scythes, gave me abush scythe with a single nib.I’ve never used it.

The Scythist’s Gait By Bernard A. Drew

Within the week, I added afourth snath to the set. At an-other yard sale I was obliged totake home a lonely handle withno blade because, I was told, noone else would ever want it.

    I’d become a collector.This orphan snath’s nibs

were set differently, and thenotch for the blade was 90

degrees off from the one onscythe No. 3. I won’t know howit works until I procure anotherblade.

I learned the rudiments ofscything years ago from twomen, George Morgan and Mar-tin Ryan, who worked on thecountry estate where my fatherwas foreman.

Sent to cut grass and golden-rod around the edge of the for-mal gardens and the hayfields,George and Marty worked attheir own leisurely pace, stop-ping periodically to sharpentheir blades. George was partic-ularly adept with a carborun-dum, starting near the snathand whipsawing the stone backand forth. His hand was a blur

as he inched from heel to toe. Aridge on the blade’s top guidedthe stone and allowed him tomaintain optimum bevel.

I found my whetstone andworked the blade for 10 min-utes, removing a layer of rust. When I tried it on tall grass inthe backyard, the scythe cutlike a hot knife through buer.

They mowed fields with ahorse-drawn sicklebar mower,

when Dad was growing up inthe Eastern Townships of Que-bec during the Great Depres-sion. To his disgust, his family’shayfields were enclosed withzig-zag split-rail fences. Grassgrowing in the triangles had tobe cut by hand.

Dad said he would touch upthe scythe maybe once a week,“If we had someone to turn the

grindstone.” Wait — didn’t you have to do

it every 10 minutes like Georgeand Marty?

When I posted photos of mynew scythe on Facebook, the re-action was as if I were an insti-tution. I was someone who notonly remembers what a scytheis, but knows how to use it! Ihad offers of one chicken yardand two small fields to cut.

A novice quickly learns that swinging a scythe isharder than it looks. There’s a particular rhythm and

gait to scything, important if you’re going to spend a

    day cuing hay.

I’ve neither lived on a farmnor swung a scythe seriouslyfor prolonged periods. Andnow I’m the expert?

     THE SCYTHIS T’SDICTIONARY There’s a whole vocabulary

to scything. Blades, sometimescalled chines, are affixed tobent wooden handles calledsnaths or sneaths or snids. Thevery end of the blade is the toe.The part closest to the handle isthe heel.

The snaths have one or two

handgrips, called nibs. Manu-factured snaths are often ofwillow or sometimes cherryor ash. They were dipped inhot oil then bent into uni-form shape. The nibs are oftenhickory.

Nibs screw onto boltsthrough the snaths. They screwon in a counterclockwise direc-tion, as the natural movementof the hands during scything is

in that direction. If the threadswere clockwise, the nibs wouldunscrew themselves.

HOW TO SWING IT  A novice quickly learns tha t

swinging a scythe is harderthan it looks. There’s a particu-

lar rhythm and gait to scyth-ing, important if you’re goingto spend a day cuing hay.

     A scythe glides through a 10-foot swath.

Firmly gripping the nibs, thescythist swings and short-stepswith one foot then the other, achieving a certain forwardmovement. The scythist makesa backward swing then pullsthe blade in an arc, the body

twisting slightly. The blade has to swing flat

to the ground. Otherwise thepoint jabs into the sod. The cutgrass or grain drags along withthe blade and is deposited onthe ground at the end of the

    scythist’s motion.It’s energizing. Really. For a

lile while.Try it once, you’ll never

again want to run a relentlesslywhining weed whipper thatis forever breaking its plasticcords.

Haunted House BringsCommunity Together  By Darryl Gangloff

W hen you think of fall, what’s the first imagethat comes to mind?

    It’s probably colorful trees sur-rounding a field of pumpkins,right?

But wait, something’s hap-pening in this relaxing imagin-

ery landscape. The pumpkinsare transforming into jack-o’-lanterns. Zombies are clawingtheir way out of the leaf-covereddirt. Frankenstein is shamblingtoward you with outstrechedarms.

Yes, autumn signifies thatHalloween is on the horizon. It also means that a group oftireless volunteers are bringingthese terrifying images to life at

the Haunted Fortress in Stan-fordville, N.Y.

For many years this hauntedhouse was known as Franken-stein’s Fortress, which wascreated by artist Peter Wingand organized by the StanfordRecreation Commission. When

Wing decided to step away fromthe project in 2013, the commis-sion was determined to keepthe project going with a newname.

Sadly, Wing died in a one-car crash in September 2014. Antonio Ingenito, who is in histhird year as art director of theHaunted Fortress, wants to payhomage to Wing by maintain-ing his signature style through-

genito said. “He was a great manwho gave people an opportu-nity to be creative and be a partof something. It’s very special. It’s important to me to keep itin his tradition.”

This community traditionis what makes the HauntedFortress a Halloween destina-tion. It’s a grouping of trailsand structures that take visitors

on a lengthy journey throughfields and an intricate mansionfull of actors ready to make youscream. (It’s not all jump scares, though. There are scriptedevents.) And, of course, it stillfeatures Frankenstein’s lab.

“It’s not your typical hauntedhouse with chainsaws andghouls and goblins,” Ingenitosaid. “This type of horror is morefocused on English literature. We

put a different twist on things.”Those twists include adding

more scenes and sets this yearto keep aendees on their toes.Perhaps the most impressive

aspect of the Haunted For-tress is that it comes togetherthrough the work of volun-teers. Adults and children actin the haunted house, createscenes, work on sets, applymakeup, hand out costumesand help at the snack table — all

to raise funds for capital im-provements to the recreationfacility.

“I’m so grateful to the peoplewho donate and volunteer theirtime to help make my visioncome to life. They have suchgreat ideas,” Ingenito said. “Thekids are so enthused to do differ-ent things and be a part of theHaunted Fortress. It’s like a well-oiled machine. It’s a big family.”

While the volunteers behindthe Haunted Fortress certainly

focus on it being scary, they alsowant it to be a family-orientedexperience. Each group of at-tendees has a silent guide tolead them through the grounds, and visitors can let their guideknow if it’s too scary for themand make a quick exit.

“We’ve had some 8-year-oldswho are more courageous thanpeople in their 50s,” Ingenito

said with a laugh. In addition to his role as art

director, Ingenito is a memberof the Recreation Commission. He wanted to be a part of thegroup that runs the HauntedFortress.

“I credit them because theyreally believe in keeping thiscommunity event flourishing,”he said. “Through community,we can succeed as a whole.”

    Enjoy Seasonal Colors

There are many perks tovisiting and living in theTri-state area, but autumn

makes one fact abundantlyclear — the scenery is breath-taking.

Most towns in this neck of

the woods (pun intended) arefilled with trees that will ex-plode with brilliant shades ofyellow, orange, red and brown. As the leaves gently rain down,it makes activities as simpleas strolling the sidewalks andsiing on benches a magicalexperience.

We have created a map ofsome of our favorite places toenjoy these autumnal views.

     By Darryl Gangloff

    Monument MountainGreat Barrington, MA

Views stretch over the southern Berkshires, north to Mt. Greylock near the Vermontborder, west to the Catskills and south overthe Housatonic River Valley.

Bash Bish Falls  Mt. Washington, MAThere’s nothing quite like lounging by a

waterfall in autumn. The hike to the fallsfrom the New York side is fairly flat, whilethe Massachuses side is steep.

    The region’s unparalleled

No hiking is required toenjoy this view. As you drive, soak in the foliage as far asthe eye can see.

    Stissing Mountain  Pine Plains, NY

It’s a steep hike to the firetower, but the autumn viewis certainly worth it.

    Caleb’s Peak  Kent, CT

We’re lucky to have so manystate parks in our backyard, aswell as mountains to climb fora seemingly limitless view ofthese fall colors.

Of course, our list is not all-inclusive by any means. After

all, the season can be enjoyedfrom literally anywhere — in-cluding your own home.

Ihave found myself engrossedin coloring books gearedtoward adults after a friend

recommended them to me fortherapeutic purposes.

I was recently diagnosed withGraves’ disease, an autoimmunedisorder that causes my thyroidgland to overproduce hor-mones. Among the myriad ofsymptoms I experience, anxiety

has been the most crippling.I had a hard time calming my

thoughts and bringing my rap-id heart rate down when I wasfirst diagnosed, but coloringhas been helping me throughthis journey.

So where does one begin? It’sreally as easy as checking yourlocal bookstore or browsingonline vendors and choosing a

book that appeals to you. These

Relaxation in Coloring By Kayla Gangloff

PHOTO BY DARRYL GANGLOFF, COLORED BY KAYLA GANGLOFF

titles stand apart from chil-dren’s coloring books in theirintricacy in designs, and often-times the subject maer.

I started with Johanna Bas-ford’s “Enchanted Forest.” Bas-ford not only creates detailedfantasy scenes with castles andwinding vines, but she also en-courages the reader to enhanceher drawings by adding flow-

ers to empty pots or finishinga doodle she has begun on thepage.

Her books tend to lean to-ward the fantasy genre, butthere are many others to choosefrom based on your interests.Taoo art, folk art, mandalasand nature scenes are some ofthe more common trends I haveseen in my hunt for new books.

     Another author who has

    quickly become my favorite is

Valentina Harper. Her books, such as “Creative ColoringInspirations,” feature bold de-signs that create frames aroundinspirational quotes like “Todayis going to be great” and “Followyour heart,” both simple mes-sages that can be easily lost inan anxious mind.

Many of these books featuretear-away pages that are easy

to copy, allowing you to create

    different visuals from the same

image or share them with fam-ily and friends.

I have a special binder withmy markers, colored pencilsand pages waiting to calm mymind and let me escape into aworld of pure creation.

I’m looking forward to draw-ing inspiration from the colorsof the changing trees this sea-son. It’s the perfect way to spend

    a beautiful autumn afternoon.

I don’t know how this storyis going to end, but I cantell you how it began.

About a year ago, I lost myability to drink red wine. I

mean, I can still drink it, butit now makes me completelysick the morning after (head-ache, nausea).

I’ve experimented to seeif only certain reds make mesick. It seems to be universal.

This is no big deal, really. Istill can and do enjoy sauvi-gnon blanc, cava and rosé.But my dinner guests often

want to bring and/or drinka bole of red, and there isoften wine left over — which Iam not going to drink.

So I decided to make redwine vinegar. I mixed togeth-er my first batch last night.Everything seemed to go well. But it now has to sit for fourweeks; that’s what I meant

    when I said I wasn’t sure how

There will soon be red wine vinegar in this covered bowl, as long asthe experiment works. As of this moment, the mixture tastes good, but a bit — well, vinegary.

     Transforming ThatLeftover Red Wine

     By Cynthia Hochswender

this story was going to end.I don’t know how it’s goingto taste, and I don’t know forsure if the recipe I used is go-ing to be a prize-winner.

But I will share with youthe website that I used andthe instructions that I fol-lowed. And chances are that,if you know me, I am also go-ing to share with you a lilebole of red wine vinegar, probably around Christmas.

Will this recipe work withwhite or rosé wine? I don’tknow. Probably, but I will

never try to make it becauseif there is a half bole ofwhite wine in my house, I’mgoing to drink it.

CHOOSING THE RECIPEThe recipe I used is on a

website called www.phickle.com, started by a womannamed Amanda who a) loves

to pickle and ferment thingsand b) lives in Philadelphia, thusthe website name. I did searcharound a bit before choosingher recipe. She seemed intel-ligent and relaxed, and sheappears to have made vinegarmany times using this recipe.

What I like most about thisrecipe is that it doesn’t require

a special “starter.” Amandasays you can use a vinegar thathasn’t been heat treated, suchas Bragg’s, because it’s “alive”and has a “mother” in it. I don’thave a mother floating in mybole of Bragg’s, but I have seenone elsewhere — it looks like ablob of wet cheesecloth.

I won’t share a lot of thechay details of this recipe with

you because I want you to go to Amanda’s website, since this is atechnique she developed.

However, I will tell you thatthe basic recipe calls for 1 cupof wine and 3 tablespoons of aliving vinegar. Mix them vigor-ously in a large bowl (you wanta lot of surface area) and thencover the bowl with a dishtowel

(clean but old is your best bet, because I promise that you willdunk the towel into the wine at

    least once).Secure the towel tightly

around the bowl with a stringor rubber band (I used a longpiece of florist’s wire). The rea-son you don’t use plastic wrapto cover the bowl is that youwant air to get in and do some-thing magical with your twosimple ingredients.

Amanda recommends thatyou uncover the bowl and stirit vigorously often, preferablyonce a day. Smell it and taste itand you can observe how yourvinegar is growing and chang-ing. I must say that it tastedprey good as soon as I mixed itall up.

Vinegar doesn’t seem to growon a timer system. Apparently it

can take anywhere from sevendays to a few months for thevinegar to get nice and tasty. When it tastes like somethingyou would like to drizzle overa salad, take it out of the bowland pour it into clean bolesthat can be tightly capped.

I wish you luck with yourvinegar experiment. Perhaps

we can all meet up at Christmasand have a swap if everythingworks out as hoped.

    TIPS FOR RED WINE VINEGAR

    The following suggestionswere collected fromwww.culinate.com.

    • To get tasty vinegar, usetasty wine.

    • Vinegar grows best in awarm place; 60 to 85 de-grees is optimal.

    • Vinegar doesn’t love light. A crock is a good place tostore your nascent vinegar.

    • Fruit flies will starthanging around yourvinegar bowl. Get rid of

them by placing a freshbay leaf on top of yourtowel. When the leafdries out, replace it withanother fresh one.

    • Don’t use a metal spoonto taste your vinegar. Tryusing a metal whisk orwooden spoon to stir it.

Football Extends PastSunday With OnlineFantasy Leagues By Sam Rathbun

The beginning of eachseason is unofficiallymarked by a specific

holiday: Christmas for win-ter, Easter for spring, Memo-

rial Day for summer andfootball for fall.

I know the last one isn’ttechnically a holiday, but itmay as well be.

I find myself excited it’sfall, because for the next 22or so weeks I can sit on thecouch, enjoy an adult bever-age or two, eat good foodand watch football.

Each Sunday, from 1 p.m.to close to midnight, eyesacross the country are gluedto the TV following everyplay, whistle and tackle, andthen dreaming about it forthe next six days until we cando it all over again. It couldbe argued that in America, football has turned from a

form of entertainment to anactual obsession.FANTASY FOOTBALL

With the advent of tech-nology and the digital age, combined with the rabidpassion fans felt for thegame, new arenas for thesport were created, such as

    FANTASY FOOTBALL PROGRAMS

Multiple online media platforms allow fans to take on therole of general manager and put together a team of actual football players, and then compete against other teams.

    • Yahoo!: football.fantasysports.yahoo.com

the birth of fantasy footballin 1997.

Fantasy football is achance for even the mostcasual football fan to try

their hand at the game, so tospeak. Media platforms suchas Yahoo, CBS and ESPN havecreated programs wherefans can take on the role ofgeneral manager and testtheir ability to put togethera team of actual athletes andcompete against other teamsin the casual environment oftheir own home.

The best part? Fantasyfootball does not require anextensive knowledge of thegame, or even the need toconstantly follow the sport. It can be played by the mostobsessed football fan orsomeone who knows noth-ing more about the gamethan it’s played on a field

with a ball, and the object isto score more points thanyour opponent.

Fantasy football does not require an extensiveknowledge of the game, or even the need toconstantly follow the sport.

based on their performancewithin actual NFL games.

THE DRAFT It all starts with the draft.

Before football season begins, teams in each league get togeth-er online and draft the basicroster with which they will playthe season. Each “owner” drafts,

on average, a quarterback, tworunning backs, two wide receiv-ers, a tight end, a kicker and ei-ther an overall team defense, ordepending on the league, fourindividual defensive players.

For most leagues, the draftfollows the rule that once aplayer is chosen for a team, heis then unavailable to be draft-ed by any other team in that

league. Drafting doesn’t requiremuch knowledge of individualathletes — the platforms gen-erally rate the best players byposition, so owners can justdraft the “best available” playerif they aren’t sure who might bethe best pick.

When each starting posi-tion is filled, teams then draft

around four bench players fromany position they want, usuallybased on the structure of theirleague and which positionsearn the highest number ofpoints. For most leagues, theyare quarterbacks and runningbacks.

Once the draft is completedand each team has their roster, owners create a starting lineup

of players who will competeagainst the other teams eachweek. This isn’t set in stone andcan be changed for each gamedepending on performance, injuries and other factors. Thisis also where the next form ofroster creation enters the pic-ture: free agency.

While each fantasy teamconsists of roughly 16 players,

there exist far more actual play-ers in the NFL. Each league hasa waiver wire, in which teamscan add or drop players thataren’t on other teams. Again, following the theme of “anyonecan do it,” the Internet is filledwith websites that give own-ers the names of athletes who

don’t fall in the category of starplayers, but they may have theopportunity to emerge as majorcontributors due to matchupsor injuries to other players ontheir teams. Just type in “fantasyfootball waiver wire” and youare inundated with countlessblogs and websites that listthe next breakout players whoaren’t owned by most teams in

    each league. WHY PLAY

FANTASY FOOTBALL?Like all sports, playing fanta-

sy football is fueled by the senseof competition and wanting tobeat friends, colleagues and ran-dom football fans. With no realSuper Bowl to play for, leaguesoften find their own unique

stakes. It makes the seasoninteresting and gives ownersthe motivation to continue tocompete each week.

Some play for money (al-though not officially, since gam-bling is illegal). Some play foran obscure bet, like the oppor-tunity to choose an embarrass-ing taoo that the worst team’sowner must get on their body.

It’s all for fun, though.Fantasy football gives you

the ability to play make believeand become an NFL generalmanager. It also adds a lileexcitement to all the games onSunday that don’t feature yourfavorite team — and, of course, bragging rights amongst yourfriends, and the healthy ribbingthat goes along with that.

    They started their project

after work on a Friday, neverthinking they had a solidweekend of sanding andpainting ahead of them.

“We bought two brushesand two small rollers, and westarted out with the brushes,”Darryl said. “After the firstcouple of coats, we decidedto try the rollers. That wentmuch beer and made for
