Lucy Johnson just completed 9th grade at Lakeside School. “What I love about TAS is that nobody will judge you for taking art seriously, but, at the same time, there’s no pressure to be

super-committed to what you’re doing or overly concerned about your art measuring up to some standard. What is more, no matter your level of skill, the visiting artists take your desire to improve seriously, which is really inspiring.”

e: Where W

e Begin

where we Begin By Margaret Davidson

Drawing is where we all begin in art — we all start there, and some of us stay there forever. When studying art, drawing is where we learn to understand all the basics of form, light and shadow, perspective, composition, even color. Some take this in-

formation into painting or sculpture, and some continue on with drawing, working towards that perfect line that best describes a fi gure’s contour, or that deeply layered collection of marks that starts to soften the space or darken the shadows.

Today drawing is its own singular art form, with its own means and ends. Every kind of image is currently being created in drawing. Some contempo-rary drawing artists are devoted to working on paper with classic draw-ing materials and are celebrating the beauty found in that tradition. Others, like Geoff Flack, are working on paper with newer materials, and still others are leaving paper behind and draw-ing directly onto other surfaces. Some, like Agnes Martin, make drawings that seem to hang in mid-air, and others, like Gego, make drawings that actually do hang there. Drawing has amazing fl ex-ibility, can be fl at or dimensional, can move or stay still, and is always involved with both what the image is, and how the surface and mark work together to make the image happen.

When we start drawing, we are on the road to everywhere in art. We can travel at any speed we like towards painting and use drawing as the foundation, or even use drawing technique as the method of paint application. We can travel towards sculpture and really explore form and space in both clay and on paper. Or we can travel towards drawing itself as our chosen destination. Drawing provides the integrity for it all, whether it lies underneath as a foundation, or is the visible end itself. Through drawing we fi nd ourselves gaining a real understanding of art and of our own individual connection to it all. Drawing is where we all begin, and will take us all wherever we want to go.

drawing artists and viewers alike aware of how the abstract, formal issues

are up front in drawing, fundamental to every

On Friday night, June 15, Gage opened its doors to the community in celebration of art and artistry at the 20th Annual Best of Gage Exhibit, Awards & Sale. More than 800 visi-tors packed the Gage building on Capitol Hill to tour three fl oors of outstanding student work from the 2011-2012 school year.

In addition to the show, the annual celebra-tion featured a standing-room-only red-carpet awards ceremony. Guest Juror Cable Griffi th, Exhibitions Curator at Cornish College of the Arts, identifi ed standout work in seven categories as well as Best in Show. Winners received a prize pack-age from an event sponsor, as well as the coveted “Pammy,” an Oscar-style statuette that’s become a popular annual tradition at the Best of Gage.

Curator/Public Events Manager shelly leavens showcased the more than 150 entries throughout the eclectic hallways and gallery spaces at Gage. “I like to think about the show in the larger sense of how it represents the tenets of the school and the wide array of classes we offer,” said Leavens, “and that each piece also

represents that individual’s experience of learning.”

Aristides Atelier student Charles Prutting captured Best in Show for his compelling fi gure portrait, Nihil est Virtute Amabilius (Nothing is Sweeter than Virtue), and Danielle Hendrix captured the People’s Choice Award for her stunning cast drawing, Blitzkrieg. A full list of winners is to the right, and a gallery of award-winning work from the show is posted on the Gage Facebook page at Facebook.Com/GageAcademyofArt.

Executive Director Pamela Belyea and Artistic Director Gary Faigin hosted the awards ceremony, and joined the packed house in marveling at the student creativ-ity. “I love the opportunity to celebrate a year of art-making at Gage,” said Belyea. “It’s always so exciting to see the breadth and caliber of the work, and to have the opportunity to recognize the very best at Best of Gage!”

Special thanks to all the 2012 Best of Gage sponsors, including title sponsors Laird Norton Tyee, 4Culture, and the Seattle Offi ce of Arts and Cultural Affairs.

Congratulations to Zoey Frank, Grand Prize Winner of the 2012 Art-ist’s Magazine All Media Art Competition. Her oil-on-canvas painting, “Song” — named Best in Show at the 2011 Best of Gage — was cho-sen from among hundreds of works submitted from around the world. A resident of Boulder, CO, Zoey is a graduate of the Aristides Atelier, where she completed four years of training in drawing and painting.

“Song” is a self-portrait, inspired by a dream, of which she says, “as I worked, this painting became more about the feeling of being at the edge of the world, and meeting that groundlessness with integrity — about staying in my body when I want to escape.”

She is currently hard at work on two large paintings that, in her words, “feel” related to “Song.” “I am interested in stripping all the non-essentials from an image so that we can see the essence more clearly,” she says of her new work. “I’m working to remove the fi gures from everyday settings, placing them in imagined environments that feel intrinsic to the characters.”

Zoey plans to participate in the Hudson River Fellowship this summer, studying the artistic, social and spiritual values of the Hudson River School painters, and is pursuing her MFA at Laguna College of Art and Design in California.

Zoey currently shows with the Fountianhead Gallery in Seattle and Haynes Galleries in Nash-ville, TN and Thomaston, ME. To learn more about Zoey, and view selections from her portfolio visit ZoeyFrank.com.

techniques that eventually helped propel her toward the completion of her MFA, which she achieved this last spring through the New York Academy of Art.

A recipient of several awards including the Posey Foundation Scholarship, and most recently the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant; Aleah’s work has been included in solo and group shows throughout the United States and Europe.

Aleah was also the recipient of the Judith Kindler and Kyle Johnson Scholarship for Innovation in the Arts, awarded each year through the generosity of Seattle-based artist Judith Kindler.

“I am thrilled that we were able to help (Aleah) with her education, and that she is doing so well with her art,” said Kindler. “As an artist, I know how impor-tant it is to be supported along the way

fi nancially, and in the family and community.”

The BP Portrait Award, now in its 33rd year at the National Portrait Gallery in London, is an annual competition aimed at encouraging artists to focus upon and develop portraiture in their work. To learn more about Aleah Chapin, visit her online at AleahChapin.com.

Zoey Frank Honored in international Competition

Congratulations to former Gage stu-dent aleah Chapin, winner of the 2012 BP Portrait Award. Aleah’s captivating portrait, “Auntie,” took home top honors from among more than 2,100 entries from around the world. Born in Seattle but now based in New York, Aleah created “Auntie” as part of a series of portraits of unrelated women she’s known all her life. “The fact that she (Auntie) has known me since birth is extremely important,” says Aleah. “In her I see the personifi cation of strength through an unguarded and accepting presence.” Aleah won £25,000 (about $38,000 USD) for top prize, as well as a commission to create a piece for the National Portrait Gallery permanent collection.

“Winning the BP Portrait Award is an honor, and I must admit, quite surreal,” says Aleah. “(Auntie) is part of a current series that examines my personal history through the people who have shaped it. The process of painting these women allowed me a glimpse of that journey and brought me into the present moment of our shared history.”

At Gage, Aleah studied with Rita Natarova, Michael Grimaldi, and Costa Vavagiakis, building a strong foundation of classical

She sets her meticulously painted floral or fruit foregrounds against a background based on an old-master painting, and the juxtapositions range from startling, to intriguing, to humorous, to sexual. Wolf shares how she evolved her approach, and how she decides on the relationship between two very different sources of imagery.

steele Gallery StraiGht Back homE to YouSeptember 7 – October 6Opening Reception:Friday, September 21, 6:00pm-8:00pm

In this collaborative and highly sensory installation, Hannah Viano examines definitions of home, and how we and the space we inhabit change as time marches on. Metal sculptor Margie McDonald lays the groundwork for this installation, building an organic nest-like structure that leaves room for light, imagination and movement to filter through. Streams of birds take flight on their own journeys, swooping up the viewer in a whirlwind of motion that escapes the walls of the gallery. Other artists include Amy Ross, Emma Morehouse, Sarah Jones, Emily Eagle, and Jess Thomson, all bringing their own distinct layers of sound, movement, ephemera and flavor to the space.

This exhibition is presented in conjunction with Hannah Viano’s lecture, The Very Best Nest. See page 8.

makE SPacEOctober 12 – November 9Opening Reception:Friday, October 12, 6:00pm-8:00pm

Taking a virtual road trip around our geographically diverse state, Make Space explores the tiny to small towns of Washington where artists are living and creating within bucolic settings in vibrant art com-munities. Artists include Jessica Bonin and James Riesen of Edison (population 133!), Justin Gibbens and Renee Adams of Thorp, Ellen Picken of Re-public and David Eisenhour of Port Hadlock. These artists exhibit works across various media that push beyond the boundaries of their small towns, yet reflect connections to the raw materials and wildlife of the surrounding landscape and the rural com-munities of which they are an integral part.

This exhibition is presented in conjunction with Justin Gibbens’s lecture, Systema Naturæ. See page 8.

LifE StoriESNovember 16 – January 6Opening Reception:Friday, November 16, 6:00pm-8:00pm

Melissa Weinman uses a new series of paintings in the format of diptychs and triptychs to invite uncommon associations between common things, asking the viewer to solve a visual puzzle with the title as a clue. An homage to family, memory and story, and at once linear and exploratory, Weinman unravels traditional still life and landscape compo-sitions through poetic associations of objects and place-based narratives, providing a story that must first be unlocked to be told.

This exhibition is presented in conjunction with Melissa Weinman’s lecture, Working Artist: Mother of Two. See page 8.

the Very Best nest hannah Viano Friday, September 21 7:00pm Geo Studio, 3rd Floor Free

In the spirit of the collaborative format of Straight Back Home to You, attendees experience a dance performance by Amy Ross and Emma Morehouse. Viano and collaborators discuss the conceptual underpinnings of the show and how we, the audience, work to create our own ideas of home amidst deep traditions and conventions. “Standing on the front step of my childhood home in Maine on a spring day I would be in the middle of a tornado of flight as swallows darted and swooped back and forth to their work in the eaves. I loved being in the middle of that energy, the frenzy of making a nest and then caring for the new lives inside, all with an urgency and purpose as sharp as beaks and forked wingtips. I want to take that moving energy and bring it with me as I explore our own creation of nests and homes, and the sometimes more subtle and subconscious drive to have something to come back to at journey’s end. While the swallows and I crossed that same threshold a million times, each of us changed a little with each trip, as does the home we build around us.”

Hannah Viano is a Seattle based artist, working primarily with cut paper and using it as a jumping-off point for projects and collaborations large and small. Viano is a recent Artist Trust EDGE pro-gram participant and recipient of a City Artist grant to create a Pacific Northwest flora and fauna alphabet for young children.

Imitating 18th- and 19th-Century zoological illustration and traditional Chinese fine-line painting, exhibiting artist Justin Gibbens’ embellished birds and beasts speak to ideas of evolution, vulner-ability, and mutation. Gibbens discusses this work in relationship to the small artist community of Thorp, which he calls home. One of the founding members of the contemporary artist-run PUNCH Gallery in Seattle, Gibbens also talks about the formation of PUNCH, the ideas propelling the gal-lery, and the important role it serves for artists who are living and working outside of Seattle.

Justin Gibbens received his BA in painting and drawing from Central Washington University and a Scientific Illustration Certificate from University of Washington. He attended the Jentel Artist Residency earlier this year and his work is represented by G. Gibson Gallery in Seattle and Elizabeth Leach Gallery in Portland. Gibbens was the recipient of a 2006 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award and a 2008 Artist Trust Fellowship Award.

Still life, landscape, figure and the narrative of a growing family. Exhibiting artist and Gage instruc-tor Melissa Weinman talks about her return to a full time studio practice after taking time to raise her two children and how this change to her life has affected her work. She will also discuss artists and ideas that influence her figurative narrative paintings and how she defines her artistic vision through incorporating all three genres into her studio practice.

Weinman is a graduate of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, where she earned her MFA. She has had solo exhibitions at the Frye Art Museum (Seattle), Arnot Art Museum (Elmira), Tatistcheff Gallery (NYC) and Tortue Gallery (Santa Monica). Her work can be found in the permanent collections of many local and national arts institutions.

Drawing, painting and sculpting from observation form the cornerstones of Gage classes, which are open to artists of all ages and skill levels. With a focus on the humanist tradition, Gage presents the broadest range of fi gurative studies in the Northwest.

For students seeking continuing education, Gage offers 10-week classes throughout the academic year (and two fi ve-week summer sessions), as well as weekend and weeklong workshops, lecture series, and open and reserved studio sessions.

kEY to SkiLL LEvELSBeneath each class listing is a skill level. Use the guide below to determine what classes best match your skill level.

Beginning: You have limited or no experi-ence with drawing, painting or sculpting.

intermediate: You understand the prin-ciples of rendering light, shade and value, and can draw any object, including the fi gure, with reasonable profi ciency; paint with an understanding of media application, and use of color to describe form and space; sculpt with an understanding of structure, form, and rhythm, as well as basic techniques and tools.

advanced: You exhibit a technical mastery of drawing, painting or sculpting, and are beginning to focus on the “why” in addition to the “how.”

GaGE founDation ProGramSAll of the classes and workshops at Gage are open enrollment, meaning you can choose for yourself what to take based on your own interests and considerations. The Founda-tion Drawing and Painting Programs*, how-ever, were sequenced as a means to help you decide which class to take next.

These programs are designed with the structure of academic training in mind: building skills through an accumulating series of classes that offer both a breadth and depth of study. A foundation in art is critical to a student’s success in achieving a solid understanding of core concepts for their own studio practice.

*Sculpting curriculum available upon request; please contact Gage at 206.323.4243 x10.

founDation cErtificatESWhile everyone is free to take foundation classes, formal enrollment in the Foundation Drawing and Painting Certifi cate programs allows you the opportunity to earn a Foun-

dation Certifi cate and offers distinct ad-vantages to taking Foundation courses à la carte. The program includes quarterly guid-ance with a curriculum advisor, a certifi cate of completion, and a solo show in the Entry Gallery at Gage. The cost for enrollment is $250 per certifi cate and you have fi ve years to complete each Foundation program.

The Foundation Drawing Program does not require a portfolio, however, enrollment into the Foundation Painting Program requires the completion of the Foundation Drawing Program or a portfolio review with a cur-riculum advisor.

cLock hourS at GaGEGage now offers teacher clock hour credits for select classes in drawing, painting, and sculpting. Register for classes as normal, and for an additional administrative fee of $75 per 30 hours completed, you can earn clock hours toward your continuing education. In this concentrated oil-painting workshop, based on traditional 15th- and 16th-century techniques, you explore the painting process into three logical steps — developing an accurate drawing, refi ning a monochromatic underpainting and completing the work in full color. You learn to see and paint funda-mental relationships, refi ning your priorities when developing your work. As you study historical paintings for interpreting the fi gure and learn to use them to your advantage as a modern painter, you sharpen your paint-ing process and uncover your own artistic metaphors.Wa1303 int/aDV $675

There is an unmistakable feeling of spontane-ity in the best watercolors that arises from the fl uidity and transparency of the medium. One wonders how paint that is allowed to have its own way can end up describing the subject so well. It seems as if it must come from either divine inspiration or very good luck.

It may be hard to imagine the role of a thoughtful approach in such a seemingly fortuitous process, but, in fact, it is focused awareness that provides the confi dence it takes to give the paint room to assert its best qualities. Asking the right questions can allow you to give as much control as possible back to the paint. The workshop will follow the inquiry-based approach described in Tom Hoffmann’s newly published book, providing you with practice fi nding your way to confi dent brushwork.Wa1301 int/aDV $600

In this workshop you learn the alla prima or direct method of painting an oil portrait. We begin with studies in the anatomy of the head and shoulders, and progress through struc-tural drawing to the mixing of color for value and temperature. Discussions include com-position strategies, pigment choices for fl esh tones, brushwork as it applies to structure and texture, and the manipulation of edges.Wa1302 int/aDV $625

Medieval art, especially the art of manu-script illumination, was practiced for more than 1000 years. The modern-day technique of dry brush watercolor painting descends from medieval manuscript art, and is the technique this class uses. You produce four pieces of art, one each in the styles of the four main periods of medieval art: Irish Insular, Carolingian, Romanesque and Gothic. The first three pieces are painted on paper, and the fourth piece is produced on actual calf skin vellum with 24-karat gold leaf gild-ing for embellishment.D1263 all leVels $430

Painting describes both a process and a product, and ultimately demonstrates the technical, expressive and conceptual abilities of the artist. At Gage, artists begin with traditional programs like color theory and grisaille painting, and advance to

professional-level classes based on conceptual and abstract theories. During the academic year, painting courses run for 10-week sessions with most classes meeting once a week for three hours. In addition, Gage offers a Painting Foundation Program, which provides an academic progression of artistic training. Juliette Aristides Mark Kang-O’Higgins Gary Faigin, detail

running from mid-September through mid-June each year, Gage Ateliers offer an intensive studio program for the serious artist-in-training. The ateliers (French for artist’s studio) are based on the traditional teaching model of the 19th-century

European academies where dedicated art students apprenticed with a master artist.

At Gage, all atelier students are given an individual studio space to complete projects inde-pendently under the guidance of their chosen instructor. Working together in group studios, atelier students enjoy the benefi t of creative infl uence and dialogue among their peers within a focused environment.

Enrollment in the atelier programs is yearly, with nine months of dedicated instruction. For the 2012-2013 school year, the ateliers run September 10, 2012 through June 14, 2013. Aristides and Kang-O’Higgins students make a 30-hour-per-week studio commitment, including working half of every day from the fi gure model. Students of Faigin work inde-pendently for a minimum of 15 hours in the studio each week, in addition to attending two weekly teaching sessions.

Atelier students receive a 10% discount on all concurrent classes and workshops (includ-ing Aristides in Florence: Drawing Workshop & Art History Tour, see page 5), as well as free access to all Drop-In Figure Studios and any Lecture Series (see page 15).

Print logo colors

Our logo colors must appear exactly the same every time they are used. On printed materials, Wells Fargo logo colors — Wells Fargo Red and Wells Fargo Yellow — must always match their CMYK formula respectively, whether printing on coated or uncoated stock. Never substitute other colors. This is especially important since certain paper stocks and different types of media may alter the way a color looks when reproduced. For this reason, a color check while the job is on press or in final production is essential. Drawdowns are strongly recommended in all cases. For print jobs requiring spot color pages, special spot ink formulas are provided from the Brand Management Team at [email protected].

The absolute minimum clearspace requirement is a quarter of the height or width of the logo on each side. Online, the logo clearspace requirement is at least 10 pixels.

Sponsorship logo standards

The Wells Fargo logo appears in Wells Fargo red and Wells Fargo yellow. Use the black 1-color version only for one- or two-color (black plus one color) applications such as newspaper advertising or forms.

For print jobs requiring spot color pages, special spot ink formulas are provided from the Brand Management Team at [email protected].

session, “The Incredible Line: Self

Portraits.” Young artists in this class

enjoyed the camaraderie of making art

together under the guidance of professional

teaching artist Julie Alpert. Drawings like

this one represent the exploration of the

expressive possibility of varying lines

from thick and heavy to thin and light as

applied to the self-portrait in charcoal
