Dear Friends,

Fall is an interesting word with various nuances of meaning. We fall down, fall in love, fall for a gag and fall asleep. Fall is a name for the season of falling leaves. Plans fall through, cities fall in battle, quarreling friends fall out, innocent people take the fall, and those with questionable mor-als are described as fallen. Fallout is the result of a bombing or disaster, yet a windfall is a lucky break. The phenomenon of falling is frequently perceived as something negative. However, in most cases falling is simply a natural result of gravity. At one time or another, it happens to everyone. Perhaps what makes falling so problematic is that it reminds us that we are not in control. No matter how careful we are we can’t prevent it; the best we can do is tuck and roll.

Spirituality could well be defined as the process of accepting that no one is immune from falling. Once we accept falling as a part of life, we are much better able to relax, tuck and roll when it happens. Spiritual-ity also helps us to recognize that we are not in charge and that being in control is highly overrated. Rather than striving to take charge ourselves, it is much wiser to honor and trust the One who is.

So I invite you to fall at Dominican Center. Come to this peaceful, warm and welcoming place – to reflect and pray, learn and grow, as individuals and/or through meeting with others. We provide a variety of spirituality programs, workshops, retreats, individual and group spiritual direction. We offer hospitality, delicious food and gracious service for those who use our confer-ence services as groups, organizations, or simply as family and friends gathering to celebrate life’s special events. DCM began the Men’s Spirituality Initiative in the fall of 2011 in response to the requests of several men, who expressed a need for opportunities to work on their spirituality in the company of other men. This initiative is not intended to negate or ignore the need for men and women to work together toward spiritual development. Indeed, most of our programs provide that opportunity. It simply offers a specific focus on the participants’ life experience and needs, similar to programs we offer based on generation, life stages and transitions.

MEN’S SPIRITUALITY BREAKFAST SERIES (086-044)This monthly series offers men an opportunity to gather together for a hot breakfast, a presentation and conversation about a variety of spiritual topics as they relate specifically to men. The breakfast and program run from 7:30 – 8:30 AM, and discussion continues until 9:00 AM for those who are able to stay. He has visited them regularly ever since. His breakfast session will center on what he learned from these Cistercians of the Strict Observance about listening for God’s voice in the holy monotony of work, prayer, and sharing a home. LISTENING FOR GOD’S VOICE: A SPIRITUALITY WORKSHOP FOR MEN (086-040)Tuesday, Oct. 16, 23 and 30; 7:00-9:00 PMFacilitator: Father Philip Shangraw This workshop is not a rite of passage for kings, magicians, Casanovas or warriors, nor will participants meet for secret rituals deep in the Manistee National Forest. Rather, this is a retreat experience for men who are willing to remove their ear buds long enough to hear God’s voice in the ordinary circumstances of life. A participant will begin by examining and articulating one’s own spirituality, that is, the way one experiences God and one’s response to that experience. That awareness may lead to a deeper love for God, and respect for people, that will find a deliberate expression in the way one lives, the priorities one establishes, in the way one acts and the manner in which one resists temptation. That is the modest goal of this workshop. The reflections, discussions and spiritual exercises will draw on the prayer experience of the participants and on Scripture, as well as on monastic and Ignatian spirituality. Do you wish you had two or three good strong buddies to draw strength from and to offer your own? Join a small group of men for this four week workshop as we explore together how we can break the man code, explore genuine masculinity and find a new road to travel with other men on the God-path intellectually, emotionally, physically and spiritually. Using the recently published book:

FOUNDATIONS IN SPIRITUALITY (088-207)Meets the third Saturday of the month 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM. A serious reflective study of the saints and great spiritual teachers of the Christian tradition, the practice of contemplative prayer and the writing of and living of a personal Rule of Life. Cost: $600.00 (includes $50.00 non-refundable deposit with registration), includes handouts and lunch. The balance may be paid quarterly. There is also a required Book of Readings that may be purchased be purchased the first day of class for $100.00.

SPIRITUAL DIRECTION PRACTICUMGrand Rapids: Year 1 (088-208) || Year 2 (088-209)Toledo, Ohio: Year 2 (088-215). A practicum consists of two years during which participants engage in the practice of Spiritual Direction while participating in both peer group and individual spiritual direction mentoring. Cost: $2,000.00 each year for 90 class hours per year (price includes lunch).

SPIRITUAL COMPANIONING Programs are available in Grand Rapids, Michigan (088-210), and Toledo, Ohio (088-216).Meets in Grand Rapids on Tuesdays 6:30 – 9:30 PM; meets in Toledo on Thursdays 6:00 – 9:00 PM. The program consists of one or two years of twelve sessions each year. This pastoral program is offered for persons in all walks of life who desire to hone their ability to companion others on the journey. One need not be in a professional ministry to participate. Cost: $575.00 each year: 12 three-hour sessions (36 class hours).

Participants are not expected to be spiritual directors. It is hoped that participants have a desire to be present to God on the behalf of others and to grow as a contemplative person. Learn how you can overcome this tendency with self-compassion practices and recreate a whole and “holy” relationship with yourself that is loving and kind. Together, we will enjoy a gentle retreat day “in” and explore how to be as compassionate with ourselves as we are with others. Come for a delightful evening of learning and practicing Metta Meditation (Loving-kindness meditation). Metta is sourced in the Vipassana tradition of Buddhism, but a similar version is found in Judaism, as well as in many other religious traditions. It is a practice of blessing—wishing ourselves and others well. Loving-kindness practice uses 4 phrases of blessing. It stabi-lizes thoughts, relaxes the mind, purifies and opens the heart—even toward difficult people. In this season of high and holy days when we spend so much time with other people, Metta can help us heal wounds, transcend difficul-ties, and love everyone more. Cost: $20.00

Spiritual DirectionSpiritual Direction can best be summed up as the art of contemplative listening, which is listening with the whole of one’s being. Traditionally, Spiritual Direction has been described in terms of a one-to-one relationship. Another approach that is relatively new is that of group Spiritual Direction. One’s situation in Spiritual Direction offers a safe, non-judgmental place of welcome for the directee where his/her experiences are taken seriously. Contemplation and personal reflection on one’s life and prayer bring this communication to awareness. Articulating and clarifying these experiences with a spiritual director assists the person to notice even more about his/her conscious relationship with God.

Ongoing Weekly Contemplative Prayer Groups • Lectio Divina. Wednesdays 12:00 - 12:30 PM. Looking for a way to deepen your prayer life? Join us on Wednesdays for a blend of slow, prayerful reading of scripture and silence. • Centering Prayer: Tuesdays 5:30 - 6:30 PM. Come to learn and be renewed in the practice of this wordless, silent prayer. Centering prayer is a method of deep prayer described in the Cloud of Unknowing in the 14th century. It has been put into contemporary form by the Trappist monk Fr. Thomas Keating, OCSO and has become a popular source of spiritual renewal.

BenincasaBenincasa House of Discernment, a ministry of the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids, provides a place and opportunity for single Catholic women (beyond high school age) to experience and share in the Dominican Life of prayer, study, common life and ministry. This live-in experience occurs within the context of a life-giving community of Dominican Sisters who offer their support as the woman discerns God’s call and her future life direction. Weekend or weeklong experiences are offered for women who would like to “try on” Dominican Life in a time frame that fits their school or work schedule. A longer stay is welcomed and encouraged. We treasure liturgical prayer. Rooted in Dominican Spirituality and in the spirit of Vatican II, our liturgical prayer grounds us in Holy Mystery and strengthens us to be authentic in today’s world. In 1985, with the renovation of the Dominican Chapel Marywood, the Sisters invited lay people to join them in worship and song. The Sunday Assembly continues to be a growing community of Sisters, Associates and lay people who have developed a strong spiritual bond with each other.
