THE CATECHETICAL MINUTE FIFTY YEARS OF FIDELITY AND RENEWAL

October 11, 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council. In acknowledge-ment of this important date Pope Benedict will proclaim the opening of The Year of Faith. When Pope John Paul II introduced the Catechism in 1992, he noted the link be-tween them, when he said “the principal task entrusted to the Council… was to better present the precious de-posit of Christian doctrine.” This task of Vatican II is re-flected in the theme of the synod that will meet for The Year of Faith. Next month: “The New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith” In calling for the synod Pope Benedict continues to implement and de-velop the vital work that the Council began 50 years ago. On October 11th, 1962 Blessed Pope John XXIII, opened the Second Vatican Council, the 21st ecumenical council of the Catholic Church. Vatican II was only the second council convened since the Protestant Reformation. In his opening homily Blessed Pope John XXIII encouraged the 2,540 bishops and the 1000 superiors of religious orders present, to “to work out ways and means of ex-plaining the Church’s truths, in a manner more consistent with a new pastoral view from the Church’s teaching of-fice.” The Second Vatican Council met at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome for over four years. Pope John PauI II on April 30, 1995, observed “the Second Vatican Council, a true ‘grace of God and gift of the Holy Spirit. This gave the Church of our time a renewed awareness of her mystery, and her mission prophetically, spurring the entire com-munity to renewal in obedience to the word of God, in order to best serve men and to bring them the Gospel more effectively”. It is no accident that Karl Wojtyla took the name John Paul. In doing so he showed his commitment with the name John to the legacy of Blessed John XXIII, who con-vened the Council; but even more importantly he took the name Paul from Pope Paul VI who continued the council, guided it through much hard work and brought it to conclusion in 1965. Pope Benedict, who served at the Council as a theological advisor has used his pontificate to further the vision and work of the Council. The work of the Second Vatican Council can be printed in two paperback volumes – 16 conciliar documents. In-cluded in these are four Dogmatic Constitutions which carry great authority in the life of the church. It is these works and other works which make up the legacy of Vati-can II. Our next Catechetical Minute will review the Teaching of Vatican II.

SOCIAL CONCERNS ANNUAL THANKSGIVING FOOD BASKET DRIVE

It’s time once again to turn our thoughts and hearts to those in our community who need our help to give their children a Thanksgiving Dinner worth remember-ing. Sadly, some of these are military families who are already shouldering an incomprehensively heavy bur-den. Missing a festive family day because of a lack of food should not be added to their load. As always we will screen our applicants to assure only those truly in need get added to our list. We are asking for a donation of $40.00 per family for a basket contain-ing everything that is necessary for a beautiful Thanks-giving dinner. Since we recognize that almost every one has been negatively impacted by the current economic situation we are not setting a specific goal this year. We will do the best we can with what we receive from you. We gladly accept any donations of turkeys, hams, canned goods and other holiday goodies especially home baked cakes, pies and cookies. We would appreci-ate it if you would please check your cans and eliminate all out-dated, rusted, dented or obviously old cans. We can’t give those out and this will save us a lot of time. Checks may be marked “food basket” and placed in the Sunday collection. If you cannot afford to sponsor an entire family, please give what you can. Food dona-tions may be brought to the Social Concerns Depart-ment in the Loretto House across from the McKeon Cen-ter during normal parish business hours. Thank you for your loving support of those who are in need and, as always, may God smile gently on you. Call me at 760.547.0708 if you have any questions.

ELEMENTARY, JR. HIGH AND HIGH SCHOOL NEEDS CATECHISTS/TEACHERS

Our Parish is so fortunate to have such a dedicated and well-trained staff, working so diligently through the summer to plan and coordinate the calendar for the up-coming religious education school year. Bill, Larry and Elena have gathered and trained a wonderful group of caring and creative catechists to share their Christian faith and love of Catholic traditions with our young peo-ple. What does it take to be a part of this group? Someone who lives and practices our faith, participates in Mass and has a desire to share their faith with our children and teens. We are in need of catechists/teachers for Elementary and Jr. High/High School; classes are on Sun-days and Tuesdays respectively with some on Saturday for the High School program. Training, resources, etc., are provided. Last year, our programs combined had a total of 800 students. In the high school program, many of our teachers have moved on for this year and are unable to volunteer; we need 8 men and/or women who are will-ing to share and teach the faith, engage in discussion and faith experiences with our young people, to serve as teachers and aides. If you are able to help, come and speak with Bill, Larry or Elena and they will provide you with the tools and training necessary to enrich your involvement with the children and the youth of our Parish. As Jesus called St. Francis, we are all called “to build His church,” and the best way to strengthen your faith and increase the love in your heart is to share it with the younger church, as they are the future of our faith. If you are interested in helping with First Grade thru Eight Grade please stop by the Religious Ed. Office, call 760-547-0712 or email [email protected]; for High School, see or contact Bill Bischoff at 760-547-0702 /[email protected] Thank you and God Bless, MSLRP Religious Education Department.

ASSIST WITH A BIBLE At the Easter Vigil our parish community witnessed forty five people receiving the sacraments necessary to complete their full entrance into the Church. One of the key elements of their catechesis is the coming to know the Scriptures, the Word of God, on a weekly basis. In class during the week and again when they gather on Sunday, they come to build a rela-tionship with Jesus Christ that they will carry with them for all their lives. For this to take place the RCIA catechumens & candidates are given a Bible at the Rite of Acceptance ceremony marking the beginning of their journey of faith. Our parish faith forma-tion budget is stretched this year trying to cover many, many, needs. Your help to provide Bibles to our RICA groups (both English & Spanish) will be greatly appreciated. A donation of $20.00, or of any amount, would help us in purchasing a Bible for each RCIA catechumen or candidate entering the Church next Easter. If you wish to give, you may make a donation at the Parish Office, in Bill Bischoff’s office, or drop it into the collection in an envelope marked “BIBLES”. Many of the people coming into the Church have many questions about the place of the Blessed Mother in the life of the Church. In their time spent in RCIA many times a strong devotion to Mary comes about for the new Catholic. There-fore a need for an “adult” rosary to be given to them is also a part in the RCIA process. A donation of $10.00 would help in acquiring rosaries for these individuals. The same manner for giving is as written above. Any questions please call Bill Bisch-off at 760-547-0702.

RCIA—INQUIRY Have you ever had questions about the Catholic Church? How do you become a member of the Catholic Church? For those not baptized, baptized in another Christian church, or baptized Catholic but inactive in the church, please call 760-547-0702.
