PENR ITH PANTHERS VS MELBOURNE STORM

KICKOFF: SUNDAY 6.30PM | REFEREES: GAVIN BADGER & ALAN SHORTALL | VIDEO REFEREES: STEVE CHIDDY & MATT RODWELL | TV: FOX SPORTS 6.30PM | RADIO: TRIPLE M 6.30PM

THE WORST THING ANY professional sporting team can do is live in the past, but of course, the fact that former

Panther Michael Jennings scored two tries for the Roosters against his old club on Sunday makes for good headlines and newspaper copy, so such coverage was expected.

Jennings’ feats combined with the fact that Luke Lewis produced a man-of-the-match performance for Cronulla against Newcastle added to plenty of talk on Twitter,

Facebook and the media in general about the Panthers’ decisions of the past and where the club is headed.

But the bottom line is this: what’s done is done.

For some time now, the focus of Phil Gould, Phil Moss and Ivan Cleary has been on the future. The senior management know, however, that long-term vision must be matched with at least some short and

medium-term success, hence the signings of players like Jamie Soward and Brent Kite, who will help take the club through the next two or three years while the rejuvenated junior development system starts to show its fruits.

As for 2013, things are looking a little rough. Last weekend’s loss to the Roosters was nowhere near as embarrassing as the scoreline may suggest, but there’s little doubt that the side didn’t have the cattle to compete when the going got tough.

THE LITTLE THINGSPenrith face an enormous task this

weekend against a Melbourne side that rarely loses two games in a row. If the Panthers are to put up a competitive showing, they must get the little things right. It was in this area where the side really let itself down last Sunday. David Simmons not being back for a 40/20 attempt, Clint Newton and Sika Manu dropping the ball at crucial

moments, and a lack of commitment in defence once or twice really hurt the Panthers against the Roosters. Whilst it’s true that the Roosters were by far the better side, it was Penrith’s errors that really allowed them to score the points they did.

THE BIG THREELooking at the match day program this

week and seeing the names Billy Slater, Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk would make any Panthers player want to call in sick

on Sunday. Nobody can deny it’s a tough task, particularly with the number of injuries Penrith have, including the long-term losses of Lachlan Coote and Sam McKendry. Any side, however, is beatable on their day, and as Canberra showed last weekend, the Storm do have some weaknesses – particularly when it comes to their left side defence. Whilst Melbourne do boast impressive players all over the park, there is little doubt

that the key to stopping them is putting the brakes on Slater, Smith and Cronk. Luke Walsh must do that with a smart kicking game that ensures a stop-start approach to the match. Hopefully the enthusiasm of Isaac John, on debut, will ensure he has a big game against the Storm’s feared halves combination.

THE FINAL WORDMelbourne are deserved short-priced

favourites for this game and will probably

win. If a Mother’s Day upset is to be caused, it’ll require an almost perfect game from the Panthers. Right now, that just doesn’t seem likely. But if the side displays as much courage and passion as they did in chunks last weekend against the Roosters, then they’ll certainly ensure Melbourne have to fi ght hard for the two competition points – and that’s all any Panther fan can ask for at this time.

Fierce Storm approachingPREVIEW BYTROY DODDS

Penrith’s win record against Melbourne is worse than against any other club. The Panthers have beaten the Storm just six times from 19 matches since 1998.

FEATURE STORY

NEW PANTHERS PROP MOSE Masoe’s game plan is quite simple: “I just run hard, tackle hard and try and do it as

long as I can”.The 194cm, 120kg monster debuted for his

new club in Penrith’s big round seven clash against the Eels, and came up against his former teammates at the Sydney Roosters last Sunday.

After playing 46 games with the Bondi-

based club, the 23-year-old said playing in Penrith colours for the fi rst time was “weird”.

“It was good, a bit weird at fi rst but it felt good to be out there with the boys,” Masoe told Extra Time.

“It felt like I was debuting in the NRL again. I just felt like a kid in a candy store, getting to play NRL with all these other blokes who have been playing for a while.”

Masoe was released from his contract

with the Roosters to join the Panthers during the off -season. He said he has no “bad blood” with his former club but believed the opportunities at Penrith were much greater.

“The Roosters had quite a lot of front-rowers there and I just wanted to be at a place where I’d get a run at fi rst grade,” Masoe said.

“I wasn’t getting a run at fi rst grade at the end of last season and Gus just told me to come to Penrith, work hard and you’ll get your shot.”

Masoe is regarded as one of the biggest hitters and toughest human beings in the game.

He grew up admiring the likes of Willie Mason, Petero Civoniceva and Gorden Tallis.

“When I fi rst started playing at the Roosters, when I was coming through, they had just signed Willie Mason, and it was a good experience to be around someone I looked up to. To be playing and training with him was pretty cool,” he said.

But it seems while the New Zealand-born star is a tough guy on the fi eld, he has to show his softer side off it thanks to his newly born baby. “The baby’s been good, keeping me at home. Luckily it hasn’t been keeping me awake but I feel sorry for my missus, she’s the one awake and I’m still asleep.”

IT’S A LONG WAY FROM BONDI TO PENRITH, BUT MOSE MASOE’S SWITCH TO THE PANTHERS COMES WITH NEW OPPORTUNITIES AND THE CHANCE TO MAKE HIS MARK IN TOP FLIGHT RUGBY LEAGUE...

THE FIRST GOLDEN POINT of the year and the same fi eld goal shootout.

Not once did Newcastle or the Sharks look to play wider than between the posts over the last 10 minutes of the game.

Wouldn’t it be great to see a side shape up for a fi eld goal but have their half or fi ve-eighth communicate with those wider players to be able to shift the ball as the opposition all push forwards towards the ruck to stop the fi eld goal, usually leaving massive holes in the defensive line further out.

This can be completed on the 4th tackle. Players can then string a few passes together to come back towards the middle on the 5th for the shot if needed.

They could even look for a repeat set, which they aim to do all game until golden point turns everything into “fi eld goal fever”.

It’s time for a change because golden point has become way too predictable.

While NSW breathed a sigh of relief that Paul Gallen should be right for Origin, we await the news surrounding Brett Morris and Brett Stewart. The question for coach Laurie Daley is whether NSW picks players that have had injury layoff s or some other names now come into the mix?

I am sure that Michael Jennings (pictured) enjoyed the Roosters victory a little more than his fellow team mates having played

a starring role in dismantling his former Panthers side on Sunday. Not only did he score a double but defensively handled a lot of traffi c and it is plain to see that his new attitude is culminating in him being the quality player that Penrith so wanted to see over the past few years.

On the Panthers front it doesn’t get any easier this week taking on the Storm who will be out to make amends for their fi rst loss of 2013, which most punters would not have tipped would occur in Melbourne against the Raiders. What is great is fans get a three game Mother’s Day treat, with the newly structured feeder side the Windsor Wolves joining in the action on game day.

2003 Clive Churchill Medal winner Luke Priddis played more than 300 National Rugby League matches, including 162 for the Penrith Panthers

LEAGUE NEWS

THE FUTURE OF PENRITH halfback Luke Walsh is in huge doubt with speculation that the club could be

just days away from granting him an early release from his deal.

Walsh's contract does not expire until the end of the 2015 season but the rugby league rumour mill is in overdrive, suggesting the 25-year-old is about to ink a deal with English club St Helens.

The Newcastle junior, who turns 26 on Sunday, has been with Penrith since 2009 and his kicking game was a key component of Penrith's success in the 2010 season, but since then he has been criticised by fans for his lack of creativity in the halves.

Two key incidents this season have put Walsh's future at the club in severe doubt.

First, he was dropped to reserve grade in an eff ort to build his confi dence after a shaky start to the season.

Then, the Panthers announced the signing of Jamie Soward – a move that threatens

Walsh's number seven jersey and almost certainly relegates him from being the team's main play maker.

Whilst Penrith is believed to still be in the market for another half for next season, the most likely scenario emerging is that Soward will play halfback with Lachlan Coote at fi ve-eighth.

The club is believed to have made a massive off er to Sharks playmaker Todd Carney, but the former league bad boy is tipped to stay in the Shire.

As for Walsh, his deal with St Helens is believed to be all but done.

Premiership-winning fi ve-eighth and Triple M commentator, Matthew Johns, said Walsh's inconsistent form has led to the England move.

"When he played well last week , I said he won't play well this week," he said on Triple M.

St Helens did not respond to enquiries by Extra Time about Walsh.

THE FOOTY SHOW INS IDER

THE FOOTY SHOW’S RESIDENT stats man David Middleton is the best in the business. The

rugby league guru painstakingly analyses every single NRL game and his predictions speak for themselves. This week, the Insider caught up with Middo to ask him about his time on the show,

“I love it, it’s a chance to talk some serious footy and the boys are always a lot of fun,” he said.

In the show’s 20th season, Middo fi nds himself bringing his unique knowledge of the game to the panel each week.

However, Middo has been a friend of the show for over a decade, featuring in past segments; David vs Goliath and Guru and The Geek.

Asked if he’d ever been tested by punters, Middo stands tall.

“Not so much. It’s all been a bit of fun.

There were a couple of contestants who may have got the better of me… I do remember one Panthers fan who knew everything there was to know about Penrith,” he said.

The Insider took the chance to ask Middo about Penrith’s chances against Premiers Melbourne this weekend.

“You don’t really want to be playing Melbourne after a loss,” he said.

“However, the Storm may not necessarily bounce back, last year they were down on confi dence and lost a few games in a row, and they may again be in a trough.

“Penrith have shown that they never give up this season.”

It will be a record-breaking victory for the Penrith outfi t if they manage to cause an upset.

“The Panthers haven’t beaten Melbourne since 2005,” Middo said.

So according to the best stats man in the business, it’ll be an uphill battle for Penrith this weekend.

Unfortunately, Middo seems to think the same about the Blues chances this Origin series.

“One of these days NSW will break the drought… QLD are getting older, one of these days it’ll happen,” he said.

Just remember, every time you see a statistic pop up, it’s highly likely that it has come from the mind, or records, of the great David Middleton.

LOWER GRADES FEATURE STORY

THE WINDSOR WOLVES WILL be hoping to bounce back into the winner’s circle this week, but will have

to do it the hard way, against the top of the table Cronulla Sharks.

Last weekend the Wolves had an untimely bye, their second of the season, after going down the previous week to the Manly Sea Eagles in the dying minutes.

Windsor coach Garth Brennan said the last round bye wasn’t ideal so early in the season but would help rest up some players.

“I think there was some guys that had played a lot of footy that needed a break, it’s always handy to give them a spell,” he said.

“It’s hard because we already had a bye round one, I would’ve preferred to have the second bye later on in the year but unfortunately the draw didn’t pan out that way.”

The third-placed Wolves will play a Cronulla side bursting at the seems with talent, headed by halfback Brett Finch. The

Sharks are the feeder side for both Cronulla and the Melbourne Storm.

Brennan said he wasn’t worried about the talent in the Sharks roster or their incredible early season form.

“I’m more worried about us than Cronulla,” he said.

“We’re a work in progress. I didn’t expect to walk into the role and it to be perfect. I’m hoping come September we are hitting our straps and are where we’re meant to be.”

The Wolves will fi eld yet another updated line-up to that of their last game in round seven. The much-talked about James Roberts has been named to return from injury to take up a spot in the centres; regular fi rst-grader Brad Tighe also returns from injury to play in the unlikely position of fi ve-eighth; and promising Holden Cup forward Reagan Campbell-Gillard will make his NSW Cup debut.

The Wolves take on the Sharks at Centrebet Stadium on Sunday at 2.20pm.

LUKE PRIDDIS

GOOD NEWS FOR PANTHERS forward Sam McKendry, who will avoid surgery after suff ering a fractured

vertebrae against the Eels last month. Unfortunately, McKendry will still be out of the game for some time as he recovers from the injury. Initial reports suggest about six to eight weeks on the sidelines.

After Fox Sports presenter Warren Smith gave the Panthers a roasting on social media for not having their player profi les up to date on the club’s offi cial website, someone acted very quickly. All of a sudden the photos of players like Etonia Nabuli, Isaac John and Anthony Cherrington were uploaded to the website just days after Smith’s rant. The commentator’s point was that if the club couldn’t bother to promote their own players properly, why should they expect other media to do it?

Surely big MG is being paid well enough to buy some pants to wear to work? (See pictured). Don’t be too concerned – it was all part of the fun on Triple M last Friday, where the former Panther took the concept of “Wear Speedos To Work Day” very seriously.

Talking of MG and his great work on the Triple M Grill Team each morning, what about the number of former Panthers who have gone on to have great jobs in the media? Greg Alexander has made a great mark at both 2UE and Fox Sports, Ryan Girdler is doing a top job on the sideline on Triple M, Darryl Brohman is the biggest star in the rugby league media – literally – via 2GB and Channel Nine, and of course Brad Fittler on Nine as well. Who’s the next big media star? Josh Mansour has installed himself as an early favourite.

Ivan Cleary wasn’t too keen to answer questions about Michael Jennings in the wake of his two try eff ort against the Panthers last Sunday. Cleary was asked two questions about Jennings in the post-match press conference, and didn’t appear comfortable answering either. Cleary certainly believes he was right in allowing Jennings to leave the club, but it must have been frustrating to see him cross twice last Sunday, particularly given the media build-up prior to the game.

Jennings himself didn’t bite when baited on Cleary and the Panthers after the game. In fact, he spoke highly of his former club and clearly wasn’t keen to throw any dirt their way. “My heart’s still there – I’ll always be a Penrith boy,” he told the Telegraph. “I’ve still got the same mindset, but looking back... I can see what was wrong and what was right.”

JUN IOR RUGBY LEAGUE W ITH YVONNE PURTELL

ONE OF THE GAME’S true champions has been honoured with the launch of the inaugural Mark Geyer Cup in Penrith this week.

The Mark Geyer Cup is an eight-week competition which kicked off on Tuesday afternoon, and provides students in the Penrith region who haven’t played rugby league an avenue to experience the game and get involved on a local level.

“I was incredibly humbled when I was told by the NRL Development team about the Mark Geyer Cup and the new competition,” the former Panther said.

“It is crucial that we all work together to keep growing the game in the region.

“Western Sydney is the heartland of rugby league, I grew up in Penrith and my children are growing up here and I just love seeing the kids out there playing footy and having fun.”

The new competition is a collaborative eff ort between NRL Game Development and the Panthers with local Game Development offi cer Mark Bohan taking the lead on establishing the competition.

Schools already registered in the local competition

include Xavier College, Glenmore Park HS, Riverstone HS, Jamison HS, Hawkesbury HS, St Clair HS, Penrith Christian School, Australian Islamic College, Mt Druitt, Chifl ey College – Dunheved Campus, Winmalee HS, Plumpton HS, Blaxland HS, Nepean HS, Erskine Park HS and Richmond HS.

The Mark Geyer Cup will stand alongside a number of competitions named in honour of some of the game’s best including Royce Simmons, Greg Alexander, Mal Meninga, Andrew Ryan, Laurie Daley and the Mortimer Brothers.

“It is unbelievably important to have our stars from the past like Mark, work to grow rugby league and secure the future of the game,” said Panthers General Manager, Phil Gould.

“We are proud of our region, our clubs and our game and being able to create new avenues for kids to get involved will make sure we have a strong and healthy future here in western Sydney.”

WHEN THE CROWD’S UP, the team’s up.

Supporting any sporting team has its ups and downs, but the roller coaster ride of emotion is part of the fun.

The people of Penrith have always been loud and proud of the Panthers, and our photographer Melinda Jane has captured plenty of the excitement in the crowd at Penrith Stadium this season.

This week’s Team Line-upsD

AYNE WESTON HAS PLAYED his last game for the Panthers after being granted an early release to join the

Melbourne Storm.The 26-year-old forward’s contract was

up at the end of the season but Panthers General Manager of Rugby League, Phil Moss, said the club had agreed to release him early.

“Dayne played many strong games for the Panthers after joining us in 2011, and has been a well-liked member of our club,” Mr Moss said.

“We wish him and his family all the best for their future in Melbourne.”

Melbourne Storm General Manager, Frank Ponissi, said the signing of Weston was vital for the Storm’s NRL squad.

“At the end of 2012 we lost two very experienced props, we signed Junior Moors, so we were always looking for another front rower to get through the long season,”

Ponissi said.“We have a number of promising young

props yet to make their debuts, therefore we needed a front rower with NRL experience and Dayne fi ts the bill perfectly.

“Dayne’s strong desire to play at Melbourne Storm has impressed us and we look forward to him joining the club”.

Weston heads south
