For about 24 hours after Penrith’s loss to the Bulldogs in heart-breaking fashion last Thursday night, I questioned why I even follow the game of rugby league.

I legitimately felt sick to the stomach. I was frustrated, angry and disappointed.

All of this and I didn’t even lace a boot on. Imagine how the players must have felt?

By the time Saturday rolled around, my love for the footy was back again and I started my routine of counting down the sleeps to the next Panthers game.

After all, a loss like that on the bell... that’s footy, isn’t it? It’s sport in general.

And how good does it feel when you’re on the other end of it, as Penrith have been in many memorable clashes with the Bulldogs over the years.

In reality Penrith should never have

been in the position they were in that final minute last Thursday – all of the statistics suggest the home side should have been much further ahead than four points going into that final minute.

But the Panthers seem to be lacking creativity close to the line at the moment, and are struggling to construct tries even with a strong completion rate and a decent share of possession.

That problem may be fixed when Matt Moylan eventually returns from injury – the Panthers have sorely missed his involvement in backline plays – but it’s a concern that the points aren’t rolling in when they should be.

Two weeks in a row the Panthers have been in a match-winning position yet have squandered the lead, unable to capitalise on the strong positions they’ve found themselves in.

So I ask you this, who would you prefer to play this weekend? Would you rather come up against a team like Newcastle, where a win was very likely, or would you

prefer to match yourself against the best opposition in the competition?

Some would choose the former option, but it’d really only give you a false positive.

Scary as it may be, facing the competition favourites Brisbane this Saturday night is a good thing for Penrith.

If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. If you want to play with the big kids in September, you have to prove yourself against them.

Based on their first two matches, Bris-bane deserve their premiership favourit-ism and have displayed a grit in defence that can frustrate opposition teams into making simple errors.

The Broncos have conceded just two tries in their opening two games.

In attack, they are slick and can finish off try-scoring opportunities better than any team in the competition, though they will miss winger Corey Oates who is out injured and replaced this week by the little known Greg Eden.

Beating Brisbane is as much a mental

game as it is a physical one and nobody knows that better than Anthony Griffin, who faces his old club for the first time. There is an aura that surrounds the Bron-cos – the way they present themselves, the way they play and the way they ensure ongoing and consistent success.

I’m tipping Brisbane purely on a head versus heart scenario (the head won). But Penrith will give this a real shake.

Tip: Broncos by 6.

INJURYCURSE HITS

with The Masked Panther

» Two games, two serious injuries. It seems Penrith can’t shake the injury curse that has struck the club for the last few seasons. After losing James Segeyaro to a broken arm in Round 1, the Panthers this week confirmed that Dean Whare (pictured) will be out for the next month at least after suffering a calf injury against the Bulldogs last weekend. It is a new in-jury for Whare, not a repeat of the injury that kept him out of week one.

» Penrith’s new Rugby League Academy is due for completion within the next few weeks and all of the team’s day-to-day operations will move over to the new facility. That includes training, with the team to only train at Pepper Stadium once in the lead-up to a match. The rest of the training, including work in the gym, will take place at the Academy. I also understand that any post-game recovery will take place there too.

» Panthers boss Phil Gould has broken his social media holiday to briefly return to Twitter and deny that the club is chasing Wests Tigers playmaker Mitchell Moses. It’s not the first time that Moses has been linked to the Panthers, but Gould has em-phatically denied reports that the young-ster took a tour of the club’s facilities. As part of the denial, Gus declared, “we will develop our own halves”. That may be true, but let’s not forget that less than 12 months ago the Panthers signed Te Maire Martin from the Tigers – he’s likely to be a long-term solution for Penrith in the halves.

» Panthers stand-in skipper Peter Wallace recognises that there’s a bit of emotion in this weekend’s clash for Anthony Griffin, who coached the Broncos before

being told to make way for Wayne Ben-nett. “You always want to prove people wrong... I’m sure he’s got a point to prove, as do all of us,” Wallace said earlier this week. It would appear that Wallace and Griffin have well and truly buried the hatchet over their previous issues.

» James Segeyaro is yet to talk to the Panthers about a deal beyond this season. The 2014 Hooker of the Year is off con-tract at season’s end and there’s a fair bit of speculation about his future doing the rounds. His recent broken arm has robbed him of the chance of showing some good early season form.

» Panthers coach Anthony Griffin is win-ning fans with a new concept after the Captain’s Run (the final training session) each week. He’s turned into a BBQ whiz, putting on a lunch for the players, staff and even the media.

» Technology changes plenty of things in rugby league, including training tech-niques. The Panthers have a drone as part of their training set-up, and the man in charge of flying the equipment is none other than Alex Melville.

» The salary cap scandal starting to engulf Parramatta is a clear indication that the NRL needs to review its entire third party sponsorship process. While it’s good in theory to separate third party sponsors from the club’s sponsors, it’s really impossible to split the two. I’m not suggesting any wrongdoing by any other club, but I will say that I’d find it hard to believe that every other team in the NRL keeps their third party deals totally sepa-rate. It is very murky water and a tough one for the new NRL boss to work out.

» Not surprisingly, the A-League is starting to struggle when it comes to TV ratings now that the NRL is back. Just 35,000 watched the Sunday afternoon clash between the Wanderers and Jets on Fox Sports. Incredibly, 225,000 watched the Sharks v Dragons on Fox even though it was also on Channel Nine. The A-League figure is appalling when you consider the Wanderers were playing for top spot at a crucial part of the season. The numbers weren’t all that much better across the weekend and it’s becoming clear that the A-League will struggle to

do any sort of impressive free-to-air deal. When more people are watching the 1964 Western flick ‘A Fistful of Dollars’ than the sole A-League match on a relaxing Sunday afternoon, you know you have a problem.

It was certainly a heartbreaking moment for Penrith fans last Thurs-day night watching Canterbury steal victory with just 20 seconds remain-ing. But spare a thought for the players who went to bed that night repeating in their heads – over and over again – “one more tackle”.

That’s all the Panthers needed, one more tackle, to get on the board in 2016 and avoid staring down the barrel of three straight defeats.

“We were ahead the whole game until that moment,” centre Peta Hiku said.

“One more tackle, that’s all we needed to win. I suppose we’ll learn from it but we just have to move on and go that extra minute better this weekend.”

This week’s assignment gets no easier for Penrith who will go face to face with last year’s grand finalists and this year’s premiership favourites Brisbane.

The Broncos will trot into town equal first on the competition ladder and will look to ride home with a still perfect record.

While even Penrith’s most rusted on supporters aren’t too confident their side will cause an upset on Saturday, it seems the high flying Broncos even have the Panthers players a little bit spooked.

“I think we may not get the win this weekend against the Broncos, we’ll certainly be aiming for it, but we can’t let them walk all over us,” Hiku said.

“I suppose we need to go out there and play on their level.

“They’re hungry for another shot at the premiership; I don’t see them losing any form any time soon, so I suppose we just need to go out there and do what they do.”

And if that’s ‘win’, Penrith will certainly need to – they have to – otherwise another season full of hope and promise could go down the drain in the blink of an eye.

“We all just need to go out there, do our jobs and work hard for each other,” Hiku said.

“Hopefully we can get the two points this week.”

When new Penrith Panthers prop Suaia Matagi finished a hot, gruelling training session on Monday afternoon, he was certainly feeling it.

With protein shake in hand – roasted coffee

beans flavour – the 27-year-old was relieved it was over.

“It wasn’t in the contract it was going to be this hot – no one warned me,” he joked.

“The first week I arrived here I couldn’t walk because of the heat.”

But despite the uncomfortably warm temperatures, the down-to-earth Kiwi couldn’t be more grateful to have found a home in Sydney’s west after short but

sweet stints at the New Zealand Warriors and Sydney Roosters.

“I’m definitely enjoying it here, I’ve loved it ever since day one,” he said.

“Everyone’s been very welcoming and it’s such a good club with a lot of history.

“I was really fortunate to play in last week’s 50th anniversary game. I just love Penrith and the community.”

Despite the Panthers still being winless after two rounds, Matagi has certainly impressed during in his first two outings off the bench.

The former Samoan and New Zealand international said he was very appre-ciative to be playing regular first grade in a brand new side.

“I’m definitely thankful for Penrith and the coaching staff for letting me play these first two games,” Matagi said.

“But I can’t relax, I have to keep on work-ing hard and do my best for the team.”

When coming off the bench, coach Anthony Griffin instructs Matagi to lift the energy and don’t leave anything behind.

“Coach keeps telling me to put it all out there and be selfless,” he said.

“We need to come together, go out there as brothers and put in the hard work.”

Penrith will need to come together and be at their very best this weekend when

they tackle a red-hot Brisbane Broncos outfit at Pepper Stadium. The Broncos remain undefeated so far this season.

Matagi knows his side were rather unlucky in the opening two games, but believes a win is just around the corner.

“We’ll learn from those first two games and it’ll just make us more hungrier,” he said.

Having worked for the NRL for a couple of years I totally understand and re-spect the decisions that are made by the powers that be on a daily basis around upholding the integrity, standards and the image of our sport, but I am finding it hard to make sense of how the game can charge a player with a possible two week suspension after the referee walked into him and made contact during last Thursday night’s game between Penrith and Canterbury.

I sit next to former NRL referee Phil Haines at my current workplace and I interrogate him over decisions made by officials every week, but surely common sense must be used in situations like this.

Now please don’t get me wrong, I totally agree that match officials should never be approached and touched by a player, but a fine and a slap on the wrist should

be sufficient punishment when it comes to situations like the one involving David Klemmer.

Let’s talk about the right time to kick for goal.

I think Penrith were desperately un-lucky not to win on Thursday night but I really must question their decision in the second half of the game to kick for goal to extend their lead from eight to 10 points, especially after applying so much pressure to Canterbury’s defence having had four consecutive sets of six attacking their goal line before making the decision to kick for goal.

I am not blaming the Panthers’ loss on this decision alone but I know that if Penrith were able to convert all that pressure into more than just two points, it certainly would have been enough to secure a win on the night.

I know how hard the players and coach-ing staff must be taking this heartbreak-ing loss, but there are plenty of positives to take away from this game. I thought the pack were much more dominant than the previous week and Jamie Soward’s kicking game, especially in the first half, was exceptional getting Penrith repeat sets and giving them great field position.

I also thought Peter Wallace did a great

job for his team playing out of position at hooker.

So now there is no time to dwell on the narrow defeat because this week’s game will be a real test of their character when they take on the Brisbane Broncos. If Penrith can emulate their first half per-formance against the Dogs and maintain it for 80 minutes on Saturday night, I am sure they will notch up their first victory.

Rugby league can be a cruel game. Last week we experienced the devasta-tion of letting what would have been a memorable win slip through our fingers, despite being the superior team for the vast majority of the contest.

The players gave it absolutely eve-rything and I think, once you set the disappointment aside, you’ll see there were plenty of positives for the Pan-thers.

Our defence was stoic and resilient and our young forwards came out on top against the much-celebrated Bull-dogs pack. That level of effort, passion and commitment will win us way more games than we lose once this young team gets the taste of victory.

Regardless of the result it was a special occasion for the club and the mem-bers to welcome members of the 1967 Panthers side back to Pepper Stadium. It was a night our inaugural Panthers will forever cherish, and we have to thank

you for playing your part in celebrating their contribution to our great club. We know it will be just one of many memo-rable moments in our historic 50th season – so make sure you get involved.

It doesn’t get any easier this week as we prepare to welcome Wayne Bennett and his Broncos.

With last season’s grand final defeat behind them, they’ve come out the other side a battle-hardened team of wily veterans and young talent. To be the best, you have to beat the best. It’s going to be a fierce clash at Pepper Stadium on Saturday.

All three grades will be in action so make sure you get down to the ground early as there is some serious talent run-ning around in our NSW Cup and NYC sides this season. Both these squads boast players who will develop into Pan-thers stars in the coming seasons – and some might even get their chance even sooner than that.

» Intrust Super Premiership NSW: Despite winning their first game of the season last weekend, Penrith Panthers reserve grade coach Steve Georgallis has made a number of changes to his side to take on Wentworthville this Saturday at Pepper Stadium.Zac Mackay will make his club return when he lines up at fullback while versatile forward Tupou Sopaga is a surprise inclusion in the centres. Corey Harawira-Naera shifts to the back-row while PNG sensation Wellington Albert is named on an extended bench. Last Saturday afternoon the Panthers got their 2016 campaign going with an impressive 42-10 thrashing of the North Sydney Bears.Penrith lead 24-0 at half-time before the Bears managed to cross for two tries midway through the second half.Prop Andy Saunders and halfback Sam Clune scored doubles in the 32-point rout as the Panthers ran rampant over their lesser opposition.

» Holden Cup: Penrith NYC coach Cameron Ciraldo will welcome back experienced skipper Oliver Clark this Saturday when the Panthers take on the Brisbane Broncos at Pepper Stadium. Hooker Reed Izzard will also return to the side while newcomer Jack Hether-ington earns a spot in the back-row. Last Thursday night Penrith earned their first win of the new season with a 46-6 pounding of Canterbury.Penrith lead 28-0 at half-time proving, despite losing in Round 1, they are still

the team to beat in season 2016. Young fullback Dylan Edwards was a beast for the Panthers scoring three tries in an outstanding display.

» Ron Massey Cup: Round 2 of the Ron Massey Cup took place last Saturday with St Marys hammering the Kings-grove Colts 52-12 at Jubilee Oval.A reshuffle to the St Marys line-up due to the late withdrawals of captain Nathan Smith and Tom Eisenhuth saw the inclusion of Jared Cannon and John Tuliatu to the starting line-up. Doubles to fullback Ray Lesoa and cen-tre Geoff Daniella capped off a remark-able 40 point win for St Marys.Young half Jake Butfield had a great day out, crossing for a try and converting eight goals from nine attempts. St Marys will look to go back to back when they battle Guildford at 6pm this Saturday at St Marys Stadium.

» SG Ball: Round 5 of the SG Ball com-petition took place last weekend with Penrith 22-10 winners over the West Coast Pirates. The Panthers have now climbed to fourth position and will take on the 16th placed North Sydney Bears this Sunday.

» Harold Matthews: Round 5 of the Harold Matthews competition took place last weekend with Penrith ham-mering South Western Sydney Acad-emy of Sport 48-4. The Panthers have climbed to seventh and will battle the North Sydney Bears this Sunday.
