PENR ITH PANTHERS VS ST GEORGE I LLAWARRA DRAGONS
KICKOFF: SATURDAY 5.30PM @ KOGARAH OVAL | REFEREES: ADAM DEVCICH & CHRIS JAMES | VIDEO REFEREES: PAUL MELLOR & REECE WILLIAMS | TV: FOX 5.30PM | RADIO: 2GB 5.30PM
THERE IS LITTLE DOUBT that the two clubs suff ering most from injury problems at the moment are the
Panthers and the Wests Tigers. However, how both sides are handling the
problem couldn’t be more diff erent.Over at Campbelltown – or Leichhardt, or
Allianz Stadium, or wherever the Tigers may be based this week – injuries are being used as an excuse, or at least it seems that way.
The violins are out, and we’re all expected to fell sorry for a Tigers side that is without
some of their biggest names, leaving them languishing at the bottom of the ladder.
In Penrith, the injury toll is about the same, if not worse, but the response is very diff erent. It is one of belief in each other.
Captain Kevin Kingston summed it up best this week when he said the team had no superstars. Future superstars perhaps, but no players who were necessarily guiding the side on their own.
Instead, Penrith’s crucial wins over the
last month over Parramatta, Melbourne and the Warriors have come thanks to players nobody but the Panthers’ most dedicated fans had even heard of when the season kicked off .
Players like Isaac John, who has emerged as the feel-good story of the year.
Players like Matt Moylan, who has an amazing skillset that will one day rival the best fullbacks in the competition.
Veterans, too, have played their part.Much-maligned at times, there can be
no denying the positive impact Nigel Plum, Luke Walsh and David Simmons are currently having on the team.
In addition, Dean Whare and Lewis Brown are proving superb makeshift centres despite neither starting the season there.
It’s amazing, really, how injury pressure has forced Ivan Cleary into making decisions that have ultimately proved to be winners.
As players return from injury throughout the season, he now faces a spoil of riches he
didn’t even know he had three months ago.Actually, I take that back.Perhaps Cleary knew all along.Either way, that should be the story he
tells if this team continues to perform the way it has over the past month.
Even in the hiccup against the Roosters, Penrith hung in there, and had Sonny Bill Williams not been awarded a controversial try in the fi rst half, the result could have been much closer.
There’s no reason the great run can’t
continue for the Panthers this week. After all, they’ve already come up against the best players in the world, and beaten them.
They’ve proved they can score points, putting more than 60 on the Warriors last week and more than 40 on the Eels a fortnight ago.
Defensively, the side has conceded just 16 points in their past two matches and scored 74. Incredible, really.
The Dragons pose an almighty threat this
weekend but it cannot be denied that in their current form, no challenge is too great for the Panthers.
A loss would not be the end of the world, but a win would more than likely put Penrith into the top eight and with a bye coming up next weekend, it’s the perfect time to clock up a third consecutive win to ensure the confi dence remains high heading into a week off .
After the bye, Penrith face the Wests Tigers back at Penrith Stadium, a game, based on
the respective attitudes of both teams at the moment, that they should win.
Player match-ups this weekend don’t matter. They didn’t matter against the Eels, the Storm or the Warriors. Belief is what matters, and whilst the Dragons have plenty of it as well particularly after a big win last weekend, Penrith seem to be on top of the ladder in the belief stakes at the moment.
This team of no-names is on the verge of proving the critics, me included, very wrong.
A team playing with beliefPREVIEW BYTROY DODDS
Penrith’s record against St George-Illawarra is not great. The Panthers win an average of one in every three matches against the Dragons, having won just eight of 24 encounters

FEATURE STORY
THERE’S NO DOUBT IVAN Cleary and Lewis Brown go a long way back.
Whilst at the New Zealand Warriors, Cleary was the man responsible for debuting Brown in the NRL in 2009. They also enjoyed success together a few years later when the Warriors made it to the Grand Final in 2011.
So, after everything they’ve been through, it was just a matter of time before 26-year-old Brown wanted to be reunited with his
former coach again.Speaking with Extra Time, the second-
rower turned centre said the coach he knew at the Warriors is slightly diff erent to the one he knows at the Panthers.
“Ivan runs a similar ship to what he did at the Warriors but if there’s one slight change he’s probably a little bit more relaxed,” Brown revealed.
“It’s good to have him a bit more relaxed.
He’s a bit of a character and I’m enjoying being back around him.”
While Cleary may be somewhat more relaxed these days he is still as stern as ever in getting his team into line and playing how he wants them to play.
“As a coach you’ve got to get across what you want,” Brown said.
“Ivan’s very professional and he’s no bull***t. He doesn’t like to muck around. As a player I believe that brings the best out in you and I think it’s starting to do that to a lot of the players in the side.”
Recently, Cleary asked Brown to move from his more comfortable position in
the second-row to fi ll in at centre due to Penrith’s rapidly growing injury crisis.
Brown said he would prefer to be playing with the ‘11’ on his back but is happy to help in any position if necessary.
“The transition to centre has been relatively easy, hopefully it’s just a short term thing though,” he said.
“We’ve had a few injuries at the club and I’ve had a some experience in the centres. As long as I’m playing out there with the boys each week, I’m happy to do it.”
Brown said his goal for the remainder of the season is to continue to gain respect from his fellow teammates.
THE VERSATILE LEWIS BROWN MAY BE NEW TO PENRITH, BUT HIS HISTORY WITH IVAN CLEARY MEANS HE’S SETTLED INTO HIS NEWSURROUNDINGS WITH EASE...

PR IDDO ’S PO INT W ITH LUKE PR IDD IS
2003 Clive Churchill Medal winner Luke Priddis played more than 300 National Rugby League matches, including 162 for the Penrith Panthers
I ENJOYED NOTHING MORE than seeing Penrith fl og the Warriors last week not just because of who the opposition coach was
but because Penrith changed direction this year and used the Women in League round to directly support a local charity initiative in the Nepean Family Room supported by Ronald McDonald House.
Once again it was also great to see Panthers schedule three games with the Windsor Wolves also putting on a great display earlier in the afternoon to defeat Canberra’s feeder team the Mounties.
The only disappointment of the night was afterwards when I heard that skipper Kevin Kingston (pictured) has been told he should look elsewhere for next year.
So who will be the next skipper? Or more importantly is anyone willing to
put their hand up for the gig given the recent history of departing captains?
To win the Origin series this year I think NSW needs an X-factor.
While some people have issues with the fact he is playing in the NRL again this year, based on his return last week, Josh Dugan could certainly give some spark to NSW.
Another classy display against Penrith surely would have the selectors giving serious thoughts to selecting him.
Also of interest will be the performance of Jamie Soward against what will be his team mates next year.
I would also like to thank all the players and those businesses that sponsored the Luke Priddis Foundation Golf day last Friday supporting kids and their families living with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
The weather and golf was great and so too the stories from former internationals Tim Brasher and big MG during lunch.
Luke is happy to answer your questions about his career, or rugby league in general. Send your questions to [email protected] and we will pass them on to Luke for a future column. You can also Tweet us @wwpenrith using the tag #askpriddo. Find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/westernweekender.

NOT SINCE THE DEBUT of Lachlan Coote in 2008 has a Panthers fullback burst onto the scene with so much
raw talent and natural ability. When 21-year-old Matt Moylan pulled on
the Penrith jumper for the fi rst time in round seven, many were questioning why the fresh-faced rookie – who has spent the past season and a half battling away in reserve grade – hadn’t cracked fi rst grade yet.
But it’s clear hard work and perseverance does count for a lot because after four games in the Panthers’ number one jersey, Moylan has proved to the rugby league world he’s more than ready to fulfi l a long and fruitful NRL career.
Moylan said he’s handling the pressure of the NRL well and believes time spent in the NSW Cup has prepared him for big time footy.
“I wouldn’t say I’ve slotted into the role with ease but I feel pretty comfortable,” he told Extra Time this week.
“It defi nitely helped playing in the NSW Cup against bigger players but you can tell fi rst grade is defi nitely faster and more physical.”
Moylan described his long-awaited call up by Panthers coach Ivan Cleary as the “best thing” he’d ever heard and couldn’t believe his chance had fi nally come.
“I just knew I had to play good footy if I was to ever get a run, so I just had to focus on that,” he said.
Since that very moment the humble St
Clair Comets junior has been fl ooded with messages of support on his social media accounts.
“The feedback from fans and the community has been good, I didn’t know that many people knew who I was, but it has been good,” Moylan said.
With his contract with Penrith expiring at the end of the season, Moylan has become hot property in the NRL market, but he hopes his future lies with the Panthers.
“My management has started talks with Penrith for next season,” Moylan revealed.
“Being from the local area it will be good to be able to stay here.”

LEAGUE NEWS
PENRITH CAPTAIN KEVIN KINGSTON has confi rmed he’s most likely in his last year with the Panthers after being
told by the club to look elsewhere for the 2014 season.
While the Panthers say they haven’t completely shut the door on Kingston, the 30-year-old told Extra Time this week that he was on the hunt for a contract elsewhere, and would not rule out a move to the UK Super League.
“I got told a week ago I wont be re-signed with Panthers, so I’ve got to start looking (for another club),” Kingston said.
“I’ve got given a job as captain and I’ll continue to do that, exactly the same as if I was staying here.”
Kingston was appointed captain mid-way through last season when the role was controversially taken away from Luke Lewis, who would ultimately quit the club to join the embattled Sharks.
Professional and dedicated, Kingston is
not letting his uncertain future become an issue, and in fact has been in solid form over the past month – coinciding with Penrith’s sensational rise up the ladder to be just outside the top eight.
“Over the last month things have been building for a game like that, so it’s been good,” Kingston said of Penrith’s 62-6 demolition of the Warriors last Saturday.
“I think the defence is the main thing. Obviously we’ve been working hard and results happen. Our backbone is our defence and if we get that right every week we’ll be in the game.
“I can’t put my form down to one thing but we’re, as a team, playing for each other. We don’t have any superstars, we’ve got some future superstars I think, so we’re just playing well as a team.”
Tim Grant is the early favourite to be Penrith’s skipper next season, but the club may also look at the option of a ‘leadership group’.

THE GAME OF MONOPOLY has had a footy-inspired facelift with an NRL version of the game hitting toy
stores last week. All 16 NRL clubs, as well as the NRL All Stars and Indigenous All Stars teams have been included with the Premiership Trophy appropriately in the board’s most exclusive and coveted ‘Mayfair’ site. Moving around the board, players fi rst encounter rugby league All Stars teams, followed by all 16 NRL clubs. The premier properties take the shape of a team’s run to lifting the trophy, following the steps from Minor Premiers, Finals and Grand Finalists all the way to NRL Premiers. The NRL’s highest honours are showcased in place of the traditional railroads with the Preston Campbell Medal, Ken Stephen Medal, Clive Churchill Medal and Dally M Medal all represented. The game also features rugby league themed playing tokens including a unique NRL Premiership Trophy replica playing piece. Chance and Community Chest cards have been given a rugby league makeover becoming HOME and AWAY cards. Draw a card to fi nd out if you are the leading try scorer, collect $100 or see if the video referee rules ‘no try’ and forces you to move back three spaces!
The Panthers are reportedly chasing local junior Peter Wallace for next season, with the Broncos halfback set to seek a release from up north and head home. The chase for Wallace comes after the Panthers missed out on securing Todd Carney and Johnathan Thurston.
Meanwhile, the future of halfback Luke Walsh remains up in the air. The 26-year-old is still being linked with St Helens in the UK, and last week, Saints coach Nathan Brown confi rmed on BBC Radio that he was keen to sign him. “He’s got a skill set that would probably benefi t most Super League teams,” Brown said. “He kicks the ball very well, he’s got an ability to make other people look good and he’s a very good organiser.”
Penrith’s win over the Warriors was sensational last weekend. And here’s a fun stat – the Panthers scored more points than GWS did in the AFL!
Two players who are off -contract at season’s end and deserve to be re-signed are David Simmons and Nigel Plum. Both are having great seasons and appear to have plenty to off er.

LOWER GRADES FEATURE STORY
RISING PANTHERS STAR BRYCE Cartwright is one step closer to making his NRL debut after being named
on the bench for the Windsor Wolves this weekend.
Cartwright, the nephew of Gold Coast Titans coach and Panther legend John Cartwright, has been setting the Holden Cup competition alight this year and according to Wolves coach, Garth Brennan, more than deserves his place.
“Bryce will push up to reserve grade this weekend and will get some game time off the bench from me,” he said
“It’s exciting times for Bryce because there’s some high hopes for him here at Panthers. The name Cartwright and Panthers go hand-in-hand and this is just another step in Bryce’s development.”
Cartwright joins fellow Holden Cup stars George Jennings, Kieran Moss and Daniel Foster to make the early season transition from the Under 20’s to the NSW Cup.
Last Saturday afternoon the Wolves put in their best performance of the season defeating Mounties 48-6.
“It was the most pleasing performance of the year for us, there’s no doubt about that,” Brennan said.
“It’s important that we start to have that ruthless attitude with our defence and I think we showed that.”
Coach Brennan said he was particularly impressed with his side’s defensive eff ort and that the threat of Mounties half Sam Williams was nonexistent.
“There is certainly some ability in our football side like Cameron Ciraldo, Brad Tighe, Wes Naiqama and Nathan Smith – players who have played plenty of football between them,” he said.
This Saturday afternoon the fourth-placed Wolves head to Kogarah to take on the eighth-placed Illawarra Cutters for their second meeting of the season. Kick off is 1.10pm.

■ Sore heels or feet, after or during a game can stop them competing at their best!
■ Heel pain, foot pain even growing pains?
■ Many times parents are told there is nothing they can do to help and that their child has to “grow out of it” other times they are given simple stretches that make little difference.
■ Often children suffer from a condition called Severs disease – associated with growing kids, an active life style and poor foot function. This condition may last many months even years before it resolves. Rather than stand by watching your child in pain. We can provide solutions aimed at getting them out of pain and back to competing at their best.
Does your child sufferpain at sport?

THE FOOTY SHOW INS IDER
THE ‘BEAU KNOWS’ SEGMENT returned in a big way this week as Beau Ryan took on Channel
Nine’s ratings hit – ‘The Voice’. The Footy Show Insider was there as
Beau took to the streets of Bankstown to tell you everything he knows about the television phenomenon.
“I love heading out to western Sydney, the people here always give us a great response and really love the show,” Beau said.
Always a sucker for a dress-up Beau did his best at impersonating a couple of The Voice’s superstar coaches.
“I get told I look a lot like Ricky Martin so it was great to be him for a day,” Beau said.
“I also got to dress up like Joel Madden, it was cool having some tatts and acting like a rock star.
Whether he was living a lifestyle
of the rich and the famous or living la vidaloca Beau was turning for the people of Bankstown.
“A lady named Melody, yes that was actually her name, was fantastic,” he said.
“She was a little upset about her performance but I reassured her that she was great and I’d love her to be on my team.”
Would he swap a Sharks jersey and a panel spot on ‘The Footy Show’ for a seat in the big red chair?
“I’d love to give coaching a crack, but I can’t sing,” he said.
“I know nothing about singing or coaching so I really don’t think I’d be any good, but hey pick me anyway!”
Keep your eyes and ears open as Beau Ryan is coming to a suburb near you.
“I’ll try and do as many ‘Beau Knows’
as I can. Follow me on intstagram @beauryanandkara and I’ll give you a sneak peek every week.”
20 years young and still singing aloud! ‘The Footy Show’ is on LIVE at 8.30pm on Channel Nine every Thursday evening.

HOW DOES JAMES SEGEYARO stay so fi t and energetic?
Plenty of gym work, it seems. Our photographer, Melinda Jane, caught up with Segeyaro mid-workout on Monday over at
the Penrith Stadium gym. As you can see, it’s nothing but hard work for the former Cowboys hooker, who has made a big name for himself since joining the club in the off -season.
