story and somehow walks away victorious.Penrith’s 12-10 victory over Melbourne

on Sunday night was groundbreaking – the Panthers last beat them in 2005 – but it also sets up the possibility of reviving the 2013 season.

The Panthers face the Warriors this weekend followed by the Dragons and the Tigers, with a bye thrown in. It is not

overstating the situation to suggest that Penrith is a realistic chance of coming away with the maximum competition points from the next month of football.

TAKING ADVANTAGEPenrith’s win last Sunday is one we’ll talk

about for years to come, but its worth will be watered down slightly if the side doesn’t take full advantage this weekend and come out

fi red up against the Warriors.The Warriors, under the guidance of

former Penrith mentor Matthew Elliott, are a dangerous outfi t at their best, but seem to disappear into a dark, black hole in the fi nal 20 minutes of matches; as was the case against the Bulldogs last Saturday, where they blew a 16-0 lead to ultimately go down 24-16 in Wellington.

With the exception of a couple of matches, the Panthers haven’t been able to score a truckload of points this season and hence,

will want to be either in front or only a few points behind come that 60 minute mark on Saturday evening.

What matters most is that the Panthers come into the clash with the same passion, the same heart and the same commitment in defence that they did against the Storm.

The side tackled its heart out in an inspiring display that left everyone on the park battered and bruised.

NOT HALF BADPenrith have struggled to fi nd the right

halves combination this season, primarily because of injury, but whilst it might not be the answer in the long-term, the Luke Walsh / Isaac John combination seems to be a winner if last weekend is anything to go by.

Walsh played a tactical game on Sunday against Melbourne, creating a stop-start aff air that never really let the Storm get into their groove. John meanwhile was energetic and had a buzz about him that really added

some spark to the contest. The Warriors have some great raw talent across the park, and can certainly get on a roll at times, but if Penrith can contain them in the same way they did Melbourne, they’ll struggle to score points and will get extremely frustrated.

GRANT’S BACKTim Grant had a slow start to the season

but he has been much improved in recent

weeks, and on Sunday night had his best game of the season – incredibly, running over 200 metres. In fact, six players ran over 100 metres against the Storm, which showed the great go-forward the side had overall. It is not Grant, however, that Penrith have relied upon most in the forwards this year. The emergence of Adam Docker has been a revelation in 2013, while Nigel Plum has gone from a fringe fi rst grader to one of the hardest hitters at the club. He’s become our new Mr Reliable in the forward pack.

THE FINAL WORDWe know that Penrith has an enormous

injury toll and the side could well use that as an excuse should they lose this, or any other match in the coming weeks.

But if you can come up against players like Billy Slater, Cooper Cronk and Cameron Smith and get the better of them, then your team has something that just clicks. Penrith must prove last weekend wasn’t a fl uke.

IT WAS BACK IN February this year when new Panthers half Isaac John was preparing for another season with English Super

League club Wakefi eld Trinity.With the sudden departure of known

troublemaker Arana Taumata late in the pre-season, Penrith were desperate for a half to cover his spot in the NSW Cup.

“Things weren’t working out well in England and Ivan and David Fairleigh got in contact with me and asked me to come over,” John told Extra Time.

“No promises were made, they just said see how you go. I jumped at the opportunity and three days later I was on the plane back here.”

John recalls the contrast between his very last training session with the Wildcats to his very fi rst with the Panthers.

“It all happened so quick, I remember my last training in Wakefi eld it was snowing and when I had my fi rst training here it was 35 degrees, it was a bit of a shock to the system,” he said.

This isn’t the fi rst time the 24-year-old Kiwi has played under coach Cleary, having worked under him during his three year stint at the New Zealand Warriors.

John said that he “gets” Cleary and has played his best football under him.

“Ivan’s coached me since I was 17 and I know what he wants,” he said.

“I played my best football underneath Ivan, so I guess he is the coach I really like. He’s really smart and a thinker and that’s what I like about him.”

After playing the fi rst eight rounds of the season for Penrith’s feeder side, Windsor, John made his Panthers debut during last Sunday’s

thrilling win over the Melbourne Storm.While the level of the Super League is

nowhere near that of the NRL, John said there were some key diff erences between the two competitions.

“Over in Australia it’s more defence orientated while in the Super League they’re all about attack,” he said.

“They play a lot more games over there and it’s a diff erent style of footy altogether I reckon.”

John’s pairing with Luke Walsh in the halves is Penrith’s fourth halves combination this season.

John believes his combination with Walsh will continue to fl ourish as the season progresses.

“I played with Walshy at Windsor earlier in the year and could tell then he was very smart and had a high league IQ,” he said.

“I’m going to do my best to try play off the back of him.

“In terms of my strengths I feel I’m a good organiser and talker. I would like to play more direct but nothing too fl ash.”

John said he also hoped to continue to run the ball more – an aspect the Panthers had been lacking for most of the year in the halves.

“I think when you’ve got a player like Walshy who can organise very well, it gives an opportunity for the ‘six’ to run a bit more, so that’s what I’m going to try to do,” he said.

The debutant was instrumental in Penrith’s confi dence-boosting win over the Storm and has been named in this week’s side to face his former club, New Zealand, this Saturday night.

FOR ME THERE WAS a critical moment last Sunday night that really summed up Penrith’s win over Melbourne.

One play that emphasised the Storm’s performance was when David Simmons (pictured) took an intercept and raced away to score a try early in the game.

Billy Slater gave up after only 10 metres which forced Cooper Cronk to chase and prevent him from going around under the posts. It was a great try, but it showed the attitude of both Simmons and Slater.

Winning is an attitude that the whole team must buy into, and it was obvious by this play that the Storm weren’t all on the same page. It summed up their night.

While I wouldn’t say it was the best quality

game credit has to go to the defensive eff ort in the second half as it was this that won the game, not the attack, which is still lacking.

I thought young Adam Docker played great which obviously has Nathan Smith in the Wolves side as he too played strongly in their game in the fi rst half before being told to shower and warm up as 18th man for Penrith.

It wasn’t the only upset of the weekend, with the Eels also surprising Brisbane 19-18 at Parramatta Stadium.

A lot has been said that Jarryd Hayne’s fi rst half fi eld goal was a master stroke play and only the great ones come up with such plays, but not to take away from the eff ort, in all honesty haven’t we seen many a player

in the same situation, no time on the clock before half time, try the same thing?

For the Blues sake let’s hope he continues to build on his form.

What about the Tigers? While they are struggling with injuries

and needing to blood some young players I sat there completely disappointed with the eff ort of Benji Marshall.

It has been some time since we have seen quality footy from him on a consistent basis and it is times such as now he needs to be showing the way forward for these young guys coming into the side.

PANTHERS ENFORCER NIGEL PLUM has been voted in a number of player polls as the ‘Hardest Hitter in the Game’.

We all know what the 30-year-old prop is like on the fi eld – think that ripsnorter of a tackle on Roosters centre Shaun Kenny-Dowall a few weeks back. But what is the man aff ectionately known as “Plummy” like off the fi eld?

“I’m a pretty quiet kind of guy in general, I wouldn’t see myself as a tough guy off the fi eld at all,” Plum told Extra Time.

The Wagga Kangaroos junior, who joined the Panthers in 2010, considers himself a family man and proud dad to his almost one-year-old son Levi and three-year-old daughter Miller – his biggest fans.

The 103kg tackling machine said he surprisingly loves playing dress-ups with his daughter but isn’t a fan of the middle of the night wake up calls with Levi.

“Miller likes dressing me up in fairy wings, it keeps her happy and that’s what it’s all about,” Plum said.

“When we had Miller she was born in November and I was getting up helping to feed her but after a week, due to training, I just said to my wife ‘I can’t do it’ and she was pretty good and said don’t worry about it.”

A country boy through and through, Plum grew up in the southern NSW town of Wagga Wagga. He believes good old country values have made him the kind-hearted gentle giant he is today.

“I grew up on a farm and always valued others,” Plum said.

“I presume it’s to do with my upbringing and the good family I have back home.”

With his side not quite setting the world

on fi re just yet, Plum admits he’s having one of his best seasons to date, remaining injury-free for the fi rst time in years.

“I was able to have my fi rst full off -season in quite a few years, so getting that under my belt has made a diff erence,” he said.

“It’s been a pretty tough start with the team but I’m still enjoying my footy which is good.”

Plum credits his amazing resurgence to being one of the top forwards in the game to legendary Panthers trainer Ron Palmer as well as the fact he’s moved to his more preferred position of prop.

“I think playing in the front-row has been the diff erence,” he said.

“Getting a bit more ball has helped and also getting the ball when I want it too.”

In Penrith’s remarkable and surprising win against the Storm last Sunday, Plum recorded a massive 120 metres, second only to Tim Grant in the forwards and third overall in the side.

He also tackled his backside off with 31 tackles, third behind captain Kevin Kingston and Grant.

Plum is off -contract at season’s end but with brilliant stats week in week out it’s more than evident he wants to stay in Penrith for the long haul and usher in this new era of prop forwards fi ltering through.

The former Rooster and Raider says he loves Penrith fans and enjoys making them happy.

“Without the fans we don’t have a game,” Plum said.

“If getting out there amongst them saying ‘g’day’ puts a smile on their faces, it puts a smile on my face knowing they’re happy.”

A LOT HAS BEEN talked about over the past year in relation to Panthers’ lock Adam Docker’s recovery from a coma

after being bashed by a gang of youths late one night on the streets of Cronulla.

Since that traumatic and unforgiving experience that took place in March last year, Docker’s road to recovery and rise in the game has been nothing short of inspirational.

The 22-year-old made his fi rst grade debut against the Warriors in round 24 last year, and has so far played every game this season apart from round one when he was named 18th man.

“When I did break my jaw and that incident happened I thought that was it, I wasn’t going to be able to recover from it,” said Docker, who had a stunning game against Melbourne last Sunday.

“Lately I’ve been getting a few messages on Facebook from kids saying I’m inspirational and stuff like that, so that makes me happy.”

Docker, a former Shellharbour local, made his way to the foot of the Mountains via the St George-Illawarra Dragons where he played in their Under 20’s side.

He wasn’t off ered a contract with the Dragons post his 20’s career and was set to become a plumber back in his hometown until the Panthers came knocking.

“When I fi nished at the Dragons I had no contract for the year after then, later on in the year, Windsor decided to pick me up,

brought me up here and pretty much guided me to fi rst grade,” Docker said.

Now well entrenched in the ‘Panthers 17’ on a weekly basis, Docker is fast becoming one of the game’s best tacklers and admits getting advice from teammates Nigel Plum and Clint Newton.

“I look up to Plummy because of the way he tackles and he hits hard,” Docker said.

“Older players like Newto are also really good because he’s done everything right and is a great person to listen to. There’s a lot of goals I want to be able to make my mark in like taking up the ball better and running through holes but I just love tackling.”

THE PENRITH PANTHERS’ HOLDEN Cup season is back on track after a terrifi c 10-6 grind out win against the

Melbourne Storm last Sunday afternoon.The top of the table Panthers simply

refused to lose back-to-back games and handled the attacking pressure by the Storm with control and ease.

Panthers coach David Tangata-Toa said he was very pleased with his young side’s defence under the intense raid of the experienced Melbourne Storm.

“We haven’t had too many of those tight games this year and they’re pretty rare in the 20’s competition,” he told Extra Time.

“We concentrated on our defence during the week because against the Roosters we weren’t great. To the boys’ credit they bounced back really well.”

Tangata-Toa said while he was impressed with their strong defence, he still believes there’s plenty of work to be done in attack - especially now that many of their key strike weapons are playing in the NSW Cup.

“We’ve lost some quality players that are playing for Windsor and obviously we’re trying to work on some new combinations,” he said.

“I think early on in the season the team relied on players like George Jennings and Kieren Moss too much, where they’d usually score a couple of tries each. As a group we need to work harder for our tries.”

Tangata-Toa believed his forwards ran the show against the Storm with captain Reagan Campbell-Gillard leading the charge.

“Reagan had his best game of the year last Sunday,” he said.

“I thought Iszah Yeo was really good, as was Iain Riccardi who moved from being an edge backrower to the middle last weekend. He did really well for us.”

This Saturday evening the Panthers will fi eld a similar line-up to the one that defeated the Storm when they take on the always physical New Zealand Warriors at Penrith Stadium.

The Warriors have been one of the consistently better sides in the NYC competition over the last few years and will no doubt bring their A-game across the Tasman.

“The Warriors, over the last few years, have been the team to beat,” Tangata-Toa said.

“They normally are a naturally big side and they’ve got a fair bit of football in them in terms of offl oads and unpredictability.

“Defensively we need to be really good again and we need to watch our turnovers because they’ll make us pay for sure.”

Meanwhile, the Windsor Wolves have slipped further down the NSW Cup ladder after an agonising loss to the undefeated Cronulla Sharks.

Hot Panthers prospect James Roberts returned to rugby league after nearly four months off with a serious knee injury, scoring a try in his Wolves debut. Standouts for the Wolves included Kieren Moss, Ethan Cook and Ryan Simpkins. This Saturday Windsor return to Penrith Stadium to take on Canberra’s feeder side Mounties at 3.15pm.

IT WAS A GREAT win by the Panthers on Sunday night but the crowd was disappointing. A tough timeslot, yes, but

really the Panthers did very little when it came to promoting the game as a Mother’s Day spectacle. Surely an “end your Mother’s Day at the footy” promotion, perhaps with free entry for mums, would have been appropriate. That said, wins like that should bring crowds back to Penrith Stadium and hopefully the immediacy of having a home game this Saturday night sees locals fl ocking in to the stadium.

It’s the Women in League round this weekend and plenty of pink will be on show, including in the footwear arena. ASICS have produced one-off pairs of Pink Lethal Tigreor boots (pictured), which a list of NRL players will wear this weekend. Among them will be Panthers forward, Tim Grant. Grant put his hand up to help the Women in League cause last year, and it’s good to see him backing it up again this season. The boots will be auctioned off by the Panthers in an eff ort to raise important funds for charity.

A few weeks ago I reported that fi ve players had been told they wouldn’t be re-signed for next season. I can reveal now that

one of those players was Kevin Kingston. Whilst Kingston still has a few years left of NRL standard football, he is the victim of Ivan Cleary’s spoil of riches when it comes to the number nine jumper. James Segeyaro is clearly itching to play 80 minutes and make the jumper his own, while a number of young hookers are looking the goods in the lower grades.

Do not under-estimate how close the Panthers were to signing Todd Carney. I’m even told that on last Wednesday afternoon, every indication was that Carney was coming to Penrith. The next day, however, Phil Gould received a phone call with the news that he was staying at the Sharks. It shows a lot that Penrith has been taken so seriously by players like Carney and Johnathan Thurston in recent months. Without Gould, Penrith would never have been in the race for players of that quality, and that is a fact.

Word is that betting agencies cheered the Panthers home loud and proud last weekend. Most of the money was for Melbourne – and plenty would have put them as an “anchor” in their multis over the weekend.

MONDAY NIGHT’S VICTORY BY the Roosters over Manly demonstrated that the Sea Eagles are all at sea

without Brett Stewart.He’s one of the leading players in the

game but he’s also Manly’s most important attacking weapon. If you break down their tries, you’d discover that Brett Stewart either scores most of them, or has played a leading role in setting them up.

Manly’s traditional backline sweep play, where Stewart runs behind the backline and links up with Kieran Foran, is one of the best set manoeuvres in the game today. Stewart’s speed makes it impossible to stop at times.

Geoff Toovey’s men managed just the one try on Monday night, and that was from a Cherry-Evans chip kick to Matai. They tried to vary their attack but it was evident that without the man they call ‘Snake’ for the next four to six weeks, Manly’s attack is going to struggle

It was also noteworthy that Glenn Stewart’s eff ectiveness has been down since his return from a knee injury.

While Glenn will continue to improve as the season wares on, I couldn’t help but notice he looks tentative and lacks confi dence in his troublesome leg.

Manly needed the dynamic forward at his best to spark some points against the Chooks, but he’s not close to it yet.

With a Monday night trip to Melbourne followed by a home fi xture against the rampant Canberra, it could be a long wait for the round 12 bye for the Sea Eagles.

On the fl ip side, the Roosters are a serious, serious football team.

There’s no doubt with the new big name signings, they’ve become a side that can attack from anywhere on the fi eld, but it is the Roosters’ defence that has me convinced they are a premiership heavyweight.

They’ve conceded just 16 tries in nine

games this season, and have played large periods where they’ve been able to keep opposition sides scoreless. This demonstrates how good their attitude and determination is under new coach Trent Robinson.

Manly might be better at the back end of the season but the Roosters have them covered right now.

AND ANOTHER THING...I want to single one young Panther for

special attention. I regard young forward Adam Docker as the best defender to emerge from the NRL in many, many years. His defence against the Storm forwards last weekend was simply outstanding and he regularly rattles much bigger opponents with his fl awless tackling technique.

Docker has some work to do on his attack, but his work rate and brilliant defence make the talented forward one for the future.

PANTHERS legend Greg Alexander helped the club to its fi rst ever premiership in 1991. He now works for 2UE, Fox Sports and Betfair.

THIS WEEK, THE NRL celebrates Women in League Round, in appreciation of all things women

do in the game of rugby league. ‘The Footy Show’ Insider caught up with our very own lady of league Erin Molan to chat about females making an impact in rugby league.

In her second year as a full-time member of the panel, Erin is feeling far more relaxed talking footy with the boys.

“I think the show is fl owing so well this year, there’s a great balance and we’re talking more footy which is what the punters are enjoying,” she said.

In regards to the new 8.30pm timeslot, Erin couldn’t be happier.

“It’s amazing! Being a sports reporter I have a very long day, so I love the 8.30pm start. Also my Dad is fi nally able to watch some of my stuff before he

goes to bed which is great”. A Nine News sports reporter, the

transition from newsroom to ‘The Footy Show’ panel is a proud one for the talented league analyst.

“‘The Footy Show’ is a very diff erent style of television, it’s nice to be able to show my personality and have a laugh,” she said.

Erin Molan has covered numerous feature stories, showcasing another side of the NRL’s elite

“I really enjoy the fascinating behind the scenes, human interest stories,” she said.

“Seeing these intimidating players with their families shows the other side of the NRL.”

Erin admits she has seen and heard some quirks whilst covering these stories.

“Josh Reynolds’ Nan selling him off

as a husband and Tim Grant getting tackled by his girlfriend defi nitely stand out,” she laughed.

When asked about the importance of women in rugby league, Erin insisted the game needs women to grow and prosper.

“The more women the better. Having more mums, sisters, wives, girlfriends and female fans involved will attract more women to rugby league,” she said.

“Women working in the media, in administration and as physios and the like will increase female fan numbers and improve the game for the better”.

Erin fi nishes with a message to all women who want to get involved in rugby league: “Do your homework, study the game, work hard, persevere and most importantly back yourself!”
