WHAT IS A STROKE?A Stroke is a disruption to the blood supply in the brain. The most common cause of Stroke is a blood clot or some fatty material blocking a blood vessel in the brain and starving it of blood and oxygen. This is called an ischaemic Stroke. Less common is a haemorrhagic Stroke, these are caused by a weak artery bursting and allowing blood to seep out into the brain tissue. A stroke in the left hand side of the brain will cause problems in the right hand side of the body and vice versa.

How does a Stroke affect people?

A Stroke can affect people in many ways depending on where in the brain it occurs and how severe it is. Some of the typical problems are:• Arm and leg weakness• Communication difficulties • Weakness in the muscles of the face• Cognitive problems such as reduced memory, attention, concentrationAbout half of Stroke survivors are left with significant disability which can affect balance, mobility, swallowing, talking, understanding speech, cognition and ability to do everyday tasks. Having specialist rehabilitation really does improve outcome after Stroke and minimise disability. Can people recover from Stroke?

The potential for recovery is dependent on many factors such as:

• The area of the brain affected by the Stroke and the extent of the damage• Whether there are problems with communication or processing of information• Health and fitness levels before the strokeFollowing an initial rapid phase of recovery there is potential to continue to recover for many years. People are often told that there is a limited recovery window after a Stroke, this is not entirely true. Recent developments in neuroscience have shown that the brain is more ‘plastic’ than previously thought – it has much more capacity to change and previously unused circuits can be used so that new connections are formed. This means that with specifically targeted treatment some of the movement can be recovered. Specialist physiotherapy can help the brain to reorganise itself.Sometimes people get stiffer or less mobile over time, treatment or exercise to maintain abilities and movement can be helpful if this happens.

How can a neurological physiotherapist help after Stroke?

• Re-educate normal movement and walking patterns• Improve balance and prevent falls• Improve arm function, including co-ordination and dexterity• Reduce spasticity (stiff, high toned muscles)• Problem solve difficulties with day-to-day tasks • Exercise programmes for fitness and strengthening• Teach carers about the best way to move and handle you

• Advice and support• Referral to other professionals

Neurological physiotherapists have specialised training and experience in treating people with neurological problems such as stroke. Their treatment is specifically targeted to stimulate the nervous system to reorganise itself in a way that restores movement and function or minimises the impact of a stroke on the body.

Emma Thomas has had many years of experience in stroke and it is her main area of expertise. She can successfully treat people in the early stages after a stroke right up to the late stages of recovery and into maintenance. Emma understands the impact that a stroke can have on a person and those around them. She works with her clients to restore as much independence as possible whether their goal is to roll in bed on their own or to walk outdoors in the countryside. She can also teach carers the best way to help people following Stroke to promote independence and normal movement patterns. BLOXHAM SCHOOL ANNOUNCES NEW HEADMASTER FOR SEPTEMBER 2013 The Council of Governors of Bloxham School is delighted to announce that it has appointed Paul Sanderson to be the School’s new Headmaster commencing on 1 September 2013. Mr Sanderson will succeed Mark Allbrook who will retire in the Summer after 11 years of outstanding service to the school.

Mr Sanderson (40) is currently a Deputy Headteacher with responsibility for the curriculum in and out of the classrooms at Gordonstoun School in Scotland. He is married to Helen and they have three young children. He was educated at Banbridge Academy in Northern Ireland followed by a BSc (Hons) degree in Biological Science at the University of St Andrews. As a post graduate student he got his PGCE at Keble College, Oxford followed by a MEd in Educational Research at Jesus College, Cambridge.Speaking with obvious delight at his appointment Paul commented:‘I am both thrilled and delighted to have been appointed the 13th Headmaster of Bloxham School. My wife, Helen and I, are very excited to be coming to a school that has students at the heart of its thinking. I admire that its roots are borne out of a Christian commit-ment to the community and that it has pupil well-being as its central focus. By affording young people the opportunities to develop, intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, physically and socially, it strives to educate the whole person in preparation for an ever changing and uncertain world. Mark Allbrook will leave me with a fine school, which is highly regarded and I will endeavour to build upon his industry to nurture and strengthen Bloxham’s position as a leading independent school.’Commenting on the announcement of his successor, Mark Allbrook said:‘I am confident that we are announcing the appointment of someone capable of both maintaining Bloxham’s strong traditions and also moving it forward. With success on the road, Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome and Mark Cavendish dominated the toughest sporting event of the year, the Tour De France taking overall victory and numerous stage wins. Moving onto the success of the London Olympics, winning countless medals the GB men and ladies showed the rest of the world how it’s done!

As a result of this success cycling is gaining a very respectable status giving a clean, inspirable image to the younger generation. The number of families and younger cyclists has risen massively whether it be purely for leisure, fitness or competition. With the youth and junior scene gaining great popularity, we should continue to see more success in the years to come.

There are many cycling and triathlon clubs in the Banbury area that hold regular rides, training sessions and

competitions. Team Cherwell triathlon club are Banbury based and cater for all ages with a specific junior team. Banbury Star cycling club hold weekly training rides all year round and competitions throughout the warmer months of the year. If you are closer to Oxford you have the Oxford City Road Club which again holds regular rides, training sessions and a weekly race calendar with the events mainly being held in the central and western areas of the county.

So, as the warmer months are getting that bit closer its time to dust the bike off and get out riding…

LoveBallet Dance Company are offering new dance classes in Banbury starting Wednesday 17th April onwards at the North Oxfordshire Academy, Drayton Road. There will be a Ballet class for little ones from 3- 6yrs, followed by a Funky Dance class (3-7yrs) which is a really fun dance class where they learn dance routines to songs and other movements. If your child would like to learn how to do all kinds of Acro Gymnastics, we have the perfect class for you (all ages) where they learn handstands, headstands, forward & backward rolls, head to toe and bridges, chest rolls, cartwheels (one handed, joint handed, elbow cartwheels as they progress) and more! For the older ones (7yrs+) we have an hours class which takes in different genres such as Ballet, Tap, Street, Gym and Modern which is a fantastic opportunity for them.
